Hey, I'm Michael Carbonaro, and welcome
to our second edition of Cause & Effect.

This is the one where we're going to
show you all new material, and we're

to show you some secret behind -the
-scenes clips so you guys will get a

of just how we make this crazy little
show.

One of the things I try to do as much as
I can is push the envelope, see how far

I can actually get people to believe in
things.

And honestly, sometimes I even surprise
myself at just what I can get away with.

First up, we have Josh here. I couldn't
figure out how to pull this trick off

until the very end of the day. Everyone
told me to give it up. I couldn't pull

it off. I said, please, just give me one
more shot.

And here's Josh in the park.

Could you take a picture of me and the
dog? Yeah, man. All right. I just want

get this building in the background.

That's the building where he was made.

And I played with him here for the first
time. Let me just get his collar off

there. Oh, yeah.

Hold him up. What about you?

I don't think it's the same battery. Let

Nine volt. That's not the same as... I
didn't realize it wasn't a real dog

you just took that apart.

this building.

They're awesome. You don't have to clean
up for them or anything.

That's crazy. Yeah. It looks cool,

walk him on a leash and everything.

Yeah, I like to take my dog for a drag
at least twice a day. Otherwise, you

know, you come home and there's

Now, usually I come up with my own
little scientific mumbo jumbo that I

give to somebody. Well, Jackie here
beats me to the punch.

You know how you can make a clock with a
potato? Yeah, you can make batteries

out of them.

Yeah. Well, how does that work?

Well, it has the acid, which is the
electrolyte. Right. And you have copper,

you have lead. Right. And it moves
through, and that is electrolyte.

Here, come here. Let me ask you this.
You're like an expert.

Tell me if this makes sense.

Because if it's like a battery, I
understand that.

You poke a hole in the front, and I know
how the clock works, where it's like,

you know, the nail is zinc.

Right. So that's the one that shoots the
electrons out.

And then burrow a hole in the back here.

So would this be, like, comparable to a
battery?

No. Okay, because I leave that part out.
Yeah.

And then a little cotton that they said
not to get your oils from your fingers

on.

And then, you know, the kids pick a
color.

Sure. And you put that in there.

And then they said the quarter is like
the copper wire of a potato clock.

Yeah. But the copper is in the middle.

And I guess that's what someone just
discovered, that it intensifies that

reaction. So now when you poke into one
of the eyes, that's what makes a

laser light.

That's pretty slick.

How does that make a... No idea. It's
not necessarily a laser per se, but

Lasers use superconductors. Right.

That is obviously not a superconductor,
but it's an electrolyte. Right.

Electrolytic material.

So it's... Because it has, like, it
feels like from... Do you feel that?

Yeah, it's got a little bit of heat
coming out of it.

Because they said not to, like, aim it
at paper stuff. Like, if I were, like,

aiming... See, that's what I'm talking
about.

I mean, it's pretty strong. Do you see
it on the back wall? I can almost get it

on that sales sign.

Do you need to focus it?

Yeah, it does need focusing, right?

Now let me introduce you to Loretta.

Every once in a blue moon, I meet a
person who is so willing to believe with

that I start believing in these things
myself.

My peaches and apples did well this
year. Sure. You were using the eco pods

the peaches?

No. We're selling those like crazy.

What are eco pods?

These are eco pods.

You haven't seen these?

No. Oh, here. Put that in there. Come on

Take a look in the light there. That's a
little eco pod.

You see what that does?

they fall here. I'll take one. They fall
from trees. You know, they have their

own little center of gravity.

Right. Inside.

Oh. And thousands of microbes inside
that live like its own little solar

See, once it's the right time of season,
do you see how it kind of moves?

Yeah. Wow.

Yeah, it kind of moves. Well, I've never
known. But I've seen them before. Yeah.

Yeah.

See? If it's just right, this one feels
a little warm.

Yeah. Are you serious? It has its own
center of gravity on it so that... It

takes in a lot of oxygen and produces a
lot of carbon dioxide for the plants so

they can grow really easily.

You see that?

And they know when they feel the heat,
they'll just work like that.

Will something come out?

No, no, they're all inside there.
They're just living inside there. And

these like this? Yeah, they'll all do
that.

They don't land to plant themselves
until they find the right soil.

So why is it moving?

Well, you know, he has to be very, very
still.

They're like a turtle. You know, they'll
hide inside their shell, and they try

and act like just a seed. You've seen
these before, right?

Yes. Have you ever picked one up? No.

Oh, well, once it becomes comfortable,
they'll start going back to work. They

start doing all their little jobs inside
there. You know, you have worker

microbes, and you have the queen
microbes, and they're just running

circles.

They couple up. A lot of them have
families.

And they just live in there just like we
do. It's like a little planet.

Are you serious?

Oh, yeah.

And when they hover, they hover like
this?

They'll hover just a few inches above
the ground.

Sometimes they'll circle around.

And if they are really, really
comfortable, I heard they can sing, you

like they can make a very high pitch. So
how do you feed them?

You don't.

The wind feeds them. You feel the holes
inside there?

So I can have it on the inside of my
house, can't I?

Well, don't, what do you mean?

Can they stay outside during the winter?

Oh, yeah.

They'll hover up above the snow so they
don't freeze.

How about you put them in a dish in the
winter? In a dish like this on the back

porch? Yeah, you could keep it on the
back porch. That's a good idea during

winter.

Maybe put a little candle next to it.

And don't be afraid to... Oh, careful.

Oh, be very careful.

Yeah. You don't want to frighten them.

They'll never float.

So how do I handle that? Just very
delicately. Just like this? Yeah, the

would handle a little baby.

recognized when you're trying to do a
trick? And the answer is no, actually

they just have this little thing that
they're just hiding. Oh, that's cool.

It's a magic show. He does like this. He
goes into a straight environment,

a dry cleaner or a pet store. Right. And
he does just exactly what you did. He

grabs something from out of the...

cabinet and does something absolutely un
-freaking -believable. This lady goes

to kennel her dog, and he just pulls out
this disc of smashed fur and then makes

it into a dog, and she's like, what did
you do to my animal?

And people believe in that? Yeah.

I don't think so.

It's very crazy.

And you look, I'm not going to say you
look like him, but you do look like him.

I've never heard of him.

I'm surprised that nobody has brought
this up before. No, I've never.

Well, you need to get a little thing and
just do some magic.

so if you need it to be longer than that

if you need it to be 12 feet instead of
having to plug the two in together you

line these guys up like this here hold
on to that okay And if they're lined up,

then instead of plugging the two
together, you just loop like

that and give it a little pull.

Uh -huh. And then you'll have a 112
-foot one. Oh, wow.

It's a Carbonara effect.

you're shooting?

Things do go wrong. We're working with
real people. The one thing that

frustrates me more than anything is when
a trick goes right. Everything works,

but the person just doesn't care.

Like the time that I tried to sell fat
-free brownies to this woman and her

husband. They cook them regular, and
then I take the fat out.

It's kind of like coffee, you know,
coffee beans.

That's right, this regular caffeine.

I'll get you one right here. So this is
just how we cook them normal.

And then you've got to find the right
spot on there.

I've got a little tool right here. And
just drill a little hole right in the

right spot there.

See that?

And then it's sort of like a little
sponge. You can squeeze it.

Squeeze out all the fat like that.

And then it's just a regular brownie
again. Oh, okay.

Yeah. So the fat's all removed.

Okay. And you can eat it fat -free.

And you know there is two of us.

There's two of us. She wants one for her
husband. I am removing the fat using

powers not known to modern man, and all
she hears is free brownies.

Yeah, that's not enough for two people.
I don't think so. Do you want the other

one without fat also?

He doesn't care. He doesn't care? All
right, well, just give him one with the

fat then, you know? And see if you could
taste the difference.

Okay. You know? I mean, you tell me what
a difference this makes. Okay. Having

the fat out.

Okay. Okay.

A little lipo brownie to call.

All right.

Sometimes they don't notice. But perhaps
worse than that, maybe my biggest

nightmare, something we all have, cell
phones.

Great for checking your email and
Twitter, but not so great when I'm

perform a trick.

Now, here's a cute little idea.

A kitten adoption, where I gave kittens
a chance for a home by floating them up

into the air.

Maybe that would have been a shocker to
this woman if she didn't have to answer

this very important phone call.

You know, when you have rescues, it's
just about hoping.

Now, to do this trick, I required a one
-of -a -kind custom -made prop, very

expensive.

Maybe I shouldn't have let them hold it.

That's the first time I've ever actually
run into counterfeit. Okay, yeah, it's

a bizarre kind of... Here, I'll do the
whole thing.

Here, don't rip it, don't rip it. Oh,
wow.

If it's fake, you gotta rip it. Throw it
away.
