I was born in Aberdeen,
Washington in 1981.

Growing up in Aberdeen,
I had a pretty normal
upbringing.

My dad's a log scaler,

and what that means
is he measures
and quantifies logs.

It's just a very humble town

with a lot of very
hardworking, humble people.

BRIE: Growing up

Bryan appreciated
when the sun came out

and what was growing
in the garden.

And I think because
he lived so simple,

it's just made him that.
That's all he knows.

I had so many interests.

I loved pretty much
all sports.

I loved reading
and being in nature.

And I loved wrestling.

I got into that when
I was in first grade.

One of my buddies brought
over a wrestling magazine,

and I was just, like...
I was hooked.

MICHAEL: And the Daniel Bryan
"Yes!" Movement

is winning over
the entire world.

It is so surreal
to see how the
"Yes!" Movement

has literally
taken over the world.

Everyone is connected
with it because

you feel the passion
from Daniel Bryan

every time he says, "Yes!"

You've seen this underdog
go through every barricade,

every obstacle, anyone
in the world could relate.

And that's what's
the greatest thing
about the "Yes!" Movement.

The whole concept
behind the "Yes!"
Movement is very true.

The audience has a voice,
the WWE Universe has a voice.

And he hasn't
had that final chance

to be a solidified champion

with a legitimate reign.

And I think the audience
truly wants that for him.

JERRY: Every single person
in here is chanting, "Yes!"

He has a good heart,
he is a good human being.

And I think
people attach
themselves to that.

If you're a good human being
with passionate intentions,

man, you want to see
that guy do well.

You know what I'm saying?

What's going on?

He has the biggest heart

I've ever met out of
any human in my life.

And, um, you just
can't change that.

That's pretty good.

SETH: He's very humble,

very down to Earth,
because for him,

it was never about
being famous.

It was never about
making millions and
millions of dollars,

or being in movies
or anything like that.

It was just about wrestling.

From day one,
he just loved pro wrestling.

But if you look at the
history of top guys,

Daniel Bryan
does not fit that mold.

BRIE: The typical
WWE character has always been

a guy who is 6'5",

huge, really built,
very clean cut.

And, uh, that's exactly
what Daniel Bryan isn't.

And I think that automatically
made him an underdog.

Because I'm not the biggest,

I'm not the strongest,

I'm not the prettiest,

but despite me not
being any of those things,

you people have believed in me

and supported me.

(CROWD CHEERING)

And you have no idea

how much that means to me.

Everyone has always
told him,

"You're too small,
you're pale,

"you don't have
the right look,

"you can't cut a promo.

"Yeah,
you're a good little hand,
you're a B+ player."

Everyone has told him
that his entire life.

Your reality is

you're a B+ player.

(CROWD BOOING)

I don't look at other
people's expectations.

Like, you have
your own expectations.

If you see something that
you want to do, you go do it.

Just trying it means
you've been successful.

Here's my Mania gear
that nobody has seen yet.

I'm keeping it hidden.

I think people
are gonna freak out
when they see it.

and you're 13 or 14 years old,

and you're not any sort of
special athlete.

And most people
are like, "Okay, that's...

dream you've got there."

So, there was a time
around 1996

when Dean Malenko
and Rey Mysterio

and all those guys
were really

hitting it big in WCW.

And people always told me
I couldn't do it because
of my size.

And then, so, seeing that,

just made me think, like,

"Hey, why not give it a try?"

What's up, guys?

Learning and going
to train with Shawn Michaels

was very intimidating.

I hadn't really been much
out of Washington State.

And to drive down
to San Antonio, Texas,

the night
I graduated high school...

I actually got to San Antonio,

and I don't know anything
about San Antonio

and there's no GPS.

I just have the
printed-out directions

and I'm lost and confused.

And it's just...
It's just a big city.

Man, San Antonio is big

and especially
when you haven't
been in many big cities.

We showed up and went
to training the first day.

And you think,

"Oh, my gosh,
there's Shawn Michaels."

And you just look
at him as somebody

who's just larger than life,
and there he is.

But if there's a person

who could teach me
the right way

to be a pro wrestler,
it's Shawn Michaels.

SHAWN: I think he knew
from the very beginning

that he was gonna
have to work harder
than everybody else

to even be noticed,
and he did that willingly.

And I had mentioned
at the beginning,

"In the world
you're going into,
and certainly in the WWE,

"you're gonna be fighting
an uphill battle

"simply due to your size."

It didn't take
very long to see

that he was
a special young man

when it came
to his in-ring talent.

He's 19 years old
and not even old enough
to have a beer yet.

The fans are here to get to
see this young man grow

and become perhaps
one of the greatest
wrestlers of all time.

WILLIAM: He was really
well trained when I met him,

when he was
with Shawn Michaels.

And he was fascinated with
all the technical wrestling.

I can't imagine just
to coming straight to WWE

because there's an intense
amount of pressure.

But to say,

"Okay, I needed
the independents to get
to where I'm at now,"

that's not the case.
The independents were fun.

I am what I am.
And what I am is the best.

You see him,
and he's not...

He's not the most
imposing guy, you know,

he's not six feet,
he's barely 200 pounds.

But it's what he does
inside the ropes,

you know what I mean?
On the canvas, like,
he's Picasso in there.

I went out there
and I performed

and I got to wrestle
all these awesome wrestlers

that most people who watch
WWE have never heard of.

And to me, like,
that was the dream.

SETH: The first time
I ever saw Daniel Bryan

was actually on DVD,

first-ever
Ring of Honor event.

BRYAN: My time
in Ring of Honor

is longer than
my time in WWE.

It was,
I would like to say,
a breeding ground.

You have to go out there
and try to prove that
you're the best.

And that was kind of the idea
with Ring of Honor.

COMMENTATOR:
These great fans in Detroit

showing their appreciation
for the skills

Yeah, that's what
it's all about,

you know, is your
performance in the ring.

And guys like Daniel Bryan
put that company on the map

and really made it
a destination for young,

independent wrestlers
like myself.

BRYAN: I got to wrestle
a lot of people
in Ring of Honor

who ended up being
big stars here in WWE,

or who will be
big stars in WWE.

ANTONIO: All the indie guys
have kind of a pride.

And there's a few guys
like Daniel Bryan,

like Seth Rollins,
like myself,

that have traveled
all over the world

just to get better
at what we do.

When you say
that word, indie,

it defines a certain
look of character.

I hate that term.

"Well, he's an indie guy."

No, he's either good
or he's not.

And Daniel is very good.

He was different, man.
He just had something
about him.

And he was just
violent and fast.

And you could just tell
he was putting his heart

into every single thing
he was doing in the ring.

I mean, let's face it,
he was one of my idols.

So what do you got
going on this week, anyway?

Uh, nothing
and everything.

Like, you know,
just trying to get ready

for the two biggest
matches in my career,

and also getting married
the following week,

and Brie and I also

put an offer on a house
that got accepted.

And also, I've got
a million media appearances.

So, yeah,
I'm just, you know,

hanging out,
doing my thing.

Just chilling?
The thing is, you'd never
know the difference.

Yeah. Yeah.
You're the same
all the time.

All the time.

There has not been
one ounce of the fame
or anything affect him.

And it blows me away.

I'm just like, "Just brag.

"Just do it, just give
me one sentence of bragging,
please?"

I just truly believe
that I am not a Superstar.

And, like, we'll be
at, like, breakfast,

and every time we're
at breakfast, we hear "Yes,"

someone will walk
and go, "Yes!"

And I'm always, like,
somewhat bragging,
I'm like, "Yeah."

And Bryan's always like...

Like, just, like, gets,
like, nervous almost.

I'm like, "You could
acknowledge it, it's okay."

But he's humble.

You'll never, ever
beat that out of him.

I've been wrestling
all over the world

for the last 10 years,
and finally,

finally, I have
an opportunity

here in the WWE.

WILLIAM: You only get good
at this when you fall

on your backside
a thousand times.

And that's what
made Bryan special.

When he got here,

it doesn't matter
what he was given,

he was ready for it.

BRYAN: By the time
I got to WWE,

I was pretty confident
in what I did.

And it's just a matter
of doing stuff

that the boss likes, really.

I didn't know
who Daniel Bryan was,

so I looked up
on the Internet,

and found out that
he is an Internet darling.

I am the Unified Tag Team

and United States
Champion, The Miz.

And I am one
of eight NXT pros,

and my NXT rookie

is Daniel Bryan.

We were kind of told,
"Okay, you guys would
each have a pro."

All that sort of thing.

And so they were
gonna be your mentor.

And I got The Miz.

So, uh, yeah.

It all went kind of
downhill from there.

(CHATTERING)

What are you doing?

MIZ: Looking good.

To be a star,
you have to look like a star,

act like a star,
dress like a star,

and then there's you.

You don't
look that good.

Do you want
to be a star or not?

I want to be a star.

But I can get a...
I can be a star on my own.

The NXT experience
was very frustrating

because they had us
doing a lot of things

that to me were
just goofy things.

Like the... To make
entertaining TV without

worrying about the guys
who are actually on NXT.

My emphasis is on wrestling.

MIZ: I wasn't quite
sure how far he would
come in the WWE,

and I think a lot of
people were like that.

BRYAN: I think the match
with Chris really helped me

was my first time

in front of the large
WWE Universe,

and gave me an opportunity
to show them

a little bit of what I can do.

MICHAEL: Daniel Bryan
is rolling here,

against the World Champion.

It's funny because Chris
told me a story about him

going back through
the curtain, and he's like,

"That guy is gonna be a star,
you know, he's a star."

All that kind of stuff.
And then Vince just looks
at him and goes, "Him?

"He doesn't even eat meat."

I mean,
he gave me a match

that I never expected
to be that good.

And this is when I really felt
that he was somebody.

MICHAEL: A performance
like this by Daniel Bryan

has got to be resonating
in the minds

of these NXT rookies
watching in the back.

And after that,
I didn't see him
for a long time

because he got fired.

So, essentially what happened

with the whole Nexus beat down

and me getting fired was

I don't know what's PG
was and what's not PG.

CENA: There was
an incident where

a group of guys
were told, and I quote,

"Go out and raise hell."

MICHAEL:
There's chaos at ringside.

These are the rookies from
the season of NXT out here.

JERRY: What are these guys
doing here? What is this?

And I thought they did.

And I thought
it was wonderful.

BRYAN: We ripped
Justin's jacket off.

Boom, he was still...
He had his tie there.

I just wrapped
it around like this,

and boom, and I
started choking him.

But apparently,
people got upset about it.
and boom, and I
started choking him.

Daniel Bryan
was using, I believe,

Justin Roberts,
the ring announcer's, tie.

He was actually choking him,
and that's a big no-no.

And when that happened,

you know, the company
had to crack down.

They made an example
of Daniel.

I just think
there should have been

some sort of other reprimand.

You know, success
has a weird way
of working itself out.

But I believe Daniel
would have been
a standout in that group.

And I believe
we made a mistake.

I just knew he had
something and I was...

I was ashamed
that we let him go.

PATTERSON: So I don't
remember how much time,

maybe three months later,

I was telling Vince,
you know,

"Why don't we rehire him?"

He goes, "No. No. No.

"He did something bad."

And, you know,
"Everybody makes a mistake.

"So I think we should
give him a chance."

John Cena agreed with me,

and that was just it.

The 7th member
of team WWE is Daniel Bryan.

JERRY: Daniel Bryan?

MICHAEL:
You got to be kidding me.

Here we go,
the American Dragon

has arrived at SummerSlam.

When I came back,
it was interesting

because I hadn't
been on RAW a lot.

So it's not like a huge
part of the WWE audience
knew who I was.

But I got a good reaction
when I came back.

And then throughout the match,
they were going crazy.

And so that really makes
the people within WWE see,

"Wait a second.
Maybe we counted
this guy out too soon."

(CHATTERING)

BRYAN: Anytime
people react to me

as being something special,
it makes me uncomfortable.

That stuff makes me
more nervous

than wrestling
in front of 70,000 people.

I have fun wrestling,
I am comfortable wrestling.

You put me in some
spandex underwear

and put me in a ring,

in front of
a group of people,

I'm 100% fine.

If you put me
in a suit in a room

with 50 press people,

and I get really,
really nervous.

So I feel like I did it.

This is my second time
doing it.
So I feel like I did it.

I did it at SummerSlam.

And I felt like
SummerSlam was a fail.

This, I feel
like I did very well.

So, um...
So, yeah. So it's always
good when you can

do something that puts
you out of your comfort zone.

I was a little kid, man,

all I thought about
and wished for

when I laid in bed at night
was to be a wrestler,
you know.

And not

but to be the best.

but to headline WrestleMania.

Today I'm fighting Sheamus
in my first-ever WrestleMania.

I'm just really excited.

And so to be here in
a company that's always been

known for their big guys,

for the Hulk Hogan
and Andre the Giants,

for The Rock and
Steve Austin, you know,

I just didn't think
I'd be here,

but now I am
and it's pretty awesome.

He was so excited.

He had been waiting
for that moment for 12 years.

SHEAMUS: We were ready
to go out there
and prove a point

and, you know, kind of
smash that glass ceiling

even a little bit
and prove that, you know,

we could hang
with the big boys.

We were in a talent
relations meeting

for WrestleMania XXVII,

and what they said is,

"Okay, guys just want
to let everybody know

"that the opening match
for WrestleMania XXVII,
"Okay, guys just want

"that the opening match
for WrestleMania XXVII,

"the dark match, it's gonna
be a Lumberjack Match.

"So all of you guys
will be out there for

"Sheamus and Daniel Bryan's
U.S. Title Match."

And I could see Sheamus,

I could just see him.

And he was like this,

and all of a sudden
he realized what that meant,

is that we weren't gonna be
on the pay-per-view,
and all of a sudden
he realized what that meant,

is that we weren't gonna be
on the pay-per-view,

and he just goes like this.
(SIGHS)

SHEAMUS:
We got that bombshell of being
pushed onto the pre-show.

Huge disappointment for me
and for Daniel Bryan.

(GRUNTS)

It was so
incredibly disheartening.

SHEAMUS: Something I've
tried hard to forget about,
to be honest with you.

It's honestly, to me,
the lowest point of my career.

After the show,
we went straight
to our hotel room.

And I was just thinking
like, "Oh, man."

who worked so hard.

There's just an overwhelming
sense of frustration,

determined to use that as fuel

I was trying
to be obnoxious,

is how it all started.

I was really excited
about being the champion,

and I would come to the ring
and just be really excited.

And, "Yes! Yes! Yes!"

Yes!

Yes!

I would start noticing
it in pockets

at the live events
and stuff like that.

And then it all exploded
at WrestleMania XXVIII.

MICHAEL:
And look at all the yeses

in the WWE Universe here.

BRIE: He wanted
to show that crowd.

I mean, you heard them
on his entrance.

They were so excited
for the start of that match.

I thought,
"Oh man, here's an opportunity

"for us to go out there
and steal the show."

And he did it.

When they saw it was
over in 18 seconds,

it was just like,
"No, they're kidding, right?"

BRYAN: You can understand
why they're upset.

You can understand
why they're angry.

"Here's the guy
that we like that we're
not supposed to like.

"He just gets
out there and gets
kicked and then leaves.

"And, like, that was something
we were really excited about."

MICHAEL: That may be one
of the fastest title changes

in the history
of WrestleMania.

I had gotten some special
gear made for WrestleMania.

I was like,
"Oh, I'm going to be in

"a World Heavyweight
Championship Match
at WrestleMania."

And so I got this
awesome gear made,

and then when I got it,

there were rhinestones
on my kick pads.
and then when I got it,

there were rhinestones

And I was like, "Oh, I can't
kick anybody with this.

"It's gonna scratch them
to death. It's going to be..."

And then it turns out
I didn't need to do
any of that.

So, I guess
there's a bright side.

But in a very
bittersweet way,

it made him.

It was like
that sacrifice of that match
it made him.

It was like

made Daniel Bryan
the biggest underdog
in WWE history.

CENA: That match did more
for him than anything.

It aligned his future
in just a few seconds.

I'll never forget
the day after.

I don't even think
he was on RAW,

and literally the entire
crowd is just chanting,

Sometimes you can't fight

the coolest things

was we did the dark match
after the show,

You know how WWE fans are.

When they feel like
somebody's getting

they rally behind them,
and they started
doing that then.

But somehow
it seems inadequate.

Last night was
the worst night

of my wrestling career.

That's when it did start.

That's when we started
to hear the rumblings,

and fans started
wanting more of Daniel Bryan,

We finally realize
what this kid had and
the potential he had,

not only as
an in-ring performer,
but as an entertainer.

For us, it's very busy

and all that kind of stuff.

of the awesome things
I've been able to do,

I wouldn't be able to do
if I weren't a WWE Superstar.

BRYAN: There's this
whole cult of celebrity

that I just
don't understand.

We're all just dudes.

Like, if I'm at
Whole Foods and,

you know, I'm just
trying to pick out

some good organic
blueberries or something,

and somebody comes up
to me and goes,

"You're Daniel Bryan,
can I... Can I get a picture?"

Can I get
your autograph?
BRYAN: Yeah, absolutely.

And it just...
It makes me
very uncomfortable

because, like, I just happen
to wrestle for a living,

and I happen to be good at it,

and but that doesn't
make me any more special

than anybody else.

And people have specific
memories of something.

That, to me,
is really awesome.

Like, for me,

my specific memory was
when I was in third grade,

we went to a show
in the Tacoma Dome,

and Ravishing Rick Rude
was wrestling
the Ultimate Warrior.

The Ultimate Warrior
sunset flipped

Ravishing Rick Rude,
and he started
pulling his pants down.

And we were
on the side that exposed

My sister... That is probably
the first male butt

she ever saw in her life.

And my dad, to this day,
talks about it,

about how her eyes

Like this big, like, "Whoa."

little things like that.

I still remember it.

That's one of my
earliest memories.

So whenever
anybody can go,

"like, and that was awesome,"

like, I understand that

because I have those
moments in my life

that relate to wrestling
that are significant,

not just for...

with my arm
just hanging by my side.

So, uh, I've had problems

when I'm doing
upper body stuff

for me to really
take care of my shoulders.

I train for function,

so what I'm doing
is I'm working on my mobility.

I'm working on my
explosiveness.

I'm working on my stamina.

You know, I'm expecting to be
out there for a while.

You know, if I beat Triple H,
I'll be doing two matches.

So just keeping
my body fluid,

keeping my body liquid,
getting ready for Sunday.
