[woman] Classical criminology,

born in the period of Enlightenment,

is responsible for the entire concept of preventing crime

by enforcing rational forms of punishment.

By administering discipline in a uniform fashion,

the courts found that the punishment itself

could actually be used as an effective deterrent.

Italian politician Cesare Beccaria,

the leader of this movement,

wrote a book in 1767 called On Crimes and Punishment.

This text used a set of guidelines

that are actually still in use today.

Does anyone know what any of these are?

The importance of civil liberties,

um, that criminal law should be separate from moral law,

that punishment should be quick,

and only as strong enough to deter crime and...

And that a suspect should be innocent until they are proven guilty.
