Somehow, it makes you feel alive.

I was on a tour of South Africa and had
landed in Johannesburg.

the lightning capital of the world, and
once upon a time considered to be the

most dangerous city on the planet.

Twenty years since the end of apartheid,
things are slowly changing and the

young people of this city are hoping to
redefine its future.

Word of my visit to Johannesburg had
spread quickly, and I was receiving so

messages from the local university that
I decided to pay them a visit.

When I arrived, the reception was
overwhelming, as hundreds of students

gathered to meet me.

How you doing, you all right?

I headed to a Johannesburg local market.

Exploring Aladdin's den filled with
weird and wonderful goods from across

continent.

As well as frogs, the market stalls sell
all

kinds of wooden animals, so I wanted to
try and take things a step further.

I was on a journey across South Africa
and had started my trip in Johannesburg.

The iconic telecommunications tower that
dominates the Joburg skyline sits in

the notorious neighbourhood of Hillbrow,
which has a reputation as one of the

most dangerous places in the city.

Once an affluent neighbourhood, by the
mid -90s it had become a no -go area for

outsiders, lighted by extreme poverty
and violent crime.

Despite being warned not to film here,
I'd heard that things were slowly

changing for Hillbrow and wanted to see
the neighbourhood for myself.

I've got a pen here.

community by where they happen to live,

part of the problem.

As I left Hillbrow, I couldn't stop
thinking about how isolated this

is. I guess change takes a long while,
but in the meantime, there is still a

huge divide between both the rich and
poor communities.

The next afternoon I headed out to
Soweto in the southwest of Johannesburg.

The Orlando Cooling Towers are a popular
destination for visitors to Soweto and

are the home of South Africa's highest
bungee jump and underground paintballing

arena.

Mission objective, retrieve the flag,
make it back to home base without

Cape Town, the oldest city in South
Africa, falls where the great Atlantic

meets the mountains of the Western Cape.

This stunning coastal city feels worlds
away from the concrete tower blocks of

Johannesburg.

From the vertical cliffs of Table
Mountain to the shark -infested waters

False Face, this is a place of awe
-inspiring beauty.

I was on my way for an interview with
the legendary Rolling Stone magazine,

which had recently opened up its offices
in Cape Town.

As a music fan, it was a massive honour
to be interviewed for such an iconic

publication.

I want to know, how did you perform,
like, 12 years ago? What kind of gigs

you get?

Well, I grew up, there wasn't really
theatres, not many kind of opportunities

really put myself on that sort of stage,
unless you were a seasoned

professional. So I had to find my own
environment to work in.

I used to perform at a lot of boxing
matches, so, you know, the people who

to the boxing, they'd spend a lot of
money, plus they'd be, like, tipping me,

like, £50 notes.

I remember I was at my grandma's and I
had this Nescafe tin, but I'd be

collecting 50s and I'd be sticking it in
this tin and hiding it under my bed.

Do you think you can do some magic for
it on that net?

I can do, yeah, yeah.

It's literally a year since you guys
started up Rolling Stone out here in

Africa. That's absolutely right.

How many copies of the magazine have you
put out?

We've done 12. We're just going to print
tomorrow with number 13.

one of the magazines and flick to a page

and find the word or thread on that page
and just memorise it. I'm standing over

here so I can't see what you're doing.

We closed the page up and everything, so
I can't have any clues to what it might

Later that afternoon, I headed over to
the Cranktown Bar in central Cape Town,

where a lot of the young South Africans
hang out.

There is another side to Cape Town.

Far away from the picturesque views of
Table Mountain and the spacious offices

of Rolling Stone magazine lie South
Africa's largest townships. Kailicha.

Over a million people live along its
network of sandy walkways, baked by the

searing African sun.

The children of Kailitsha flood the
streets during the day, many of them

orphaned and living on daily handouts.

For a lucky few, a pen and paper are the
basic essentials needed for

homeschooling.

I just want you to draw something for
me, anything you want.

I have just thrown a sand right through
in the paper.

But when I lift up the paper, it just
blew the wind right in the sand. And my

son appeared.

But I don't know how it happened.

As darkness fell, it was time to leave
Kailitsha.

This had been an amazing experience and
the residents had welcomed me like an

old friend.

So before I left, I stopped by a family
who were cooking dinner on the roadside

to leave them with a parting gift.

Long Street in the Cape Town city bulb,

where hordes of people pack up at local
bars and restaurants.

My journey had almost come to an end,
and I felt like I had only scratched the

surface of this incredible, complex
country.

From the students of the Varsity
University to the dust -ridden streets

Kailitsha, this is clearly a country of
great extremes.

In some ways, South Africa is still
living in the shadow of its past and

has huge issues of poverty and racial
inequality.

But there is a new generation paving the
way for a brighter, more tolerant

future. As the great Nelson Mandela once
said, it always seems impossible until

it's done.

It's really exciting.

It's going to come back, right?

That is very freaky.

As I sat there overlooking Cape Town, I
couldn't help but think how a country

with so much abundance still struggles
to feed much of its population.

I'm not a politician, and maybe things
aren't that simple, but clearly this

isn't the way it's meant to be.

Before I left South Africa, I wanted to
visit Kailicha one last time.

I couldn't think of a better way to end

friends.
