Ashfordly's longest -serving cop is

goodbye to the 1960s.

It'll be very strange without Bellamy.

I'm in mourning, that's for sure.

So raise a glass and let's bid a fond
farewell to PC Phil Bellamy. Cheers.

Here we are in the studios.

One police set.

16 years I sat behind that desk.

Go on, I'll show you inside.

Look what's just blown in.

On Friday the 10th of April 1992,
Heartbeat hit our screens and we met

Bellamy, the youngest policeman at
Ashfordly Nick, played since the series

launched by actor Mark Jordan.

Phil Bellamy. His lovable ways made him
popular from day one.

But let's face it, he was never the
brightest Bobby on the beat.

Flipping Nora.

Bungling Bellamy.

Bungling Bellamy.

Bungling Bellamy.

That's what they all call him.

It's supposed to be your job to get into
the church on time.

I know, I know.

He was a bit of a clown.

He was just youth.

He personified youth, really.

I'm the best man and I've lost the
flipping groom.

Whatever he tries to do, whatever he
tries to achieve, He's done with a good

heart.

But realistically, more often than not,
he's not quite on the market.

Bellamy! Bellamy!

Bellamy!

His bungling ways often landed him in
hot water with his bosses.

Get out there!

Pronto!

If someone had to get told off, it'd
have to be Bellamy, which we obviously

enjoyed. Come to me, Bellamy. I cannot
believe your behaviour.

It was a running gag that Bellamy was
always getting into trouble, but it was

never really deep trouble.

And as for you, Bellamy... ..words fail
me.

I gave them all a hard time. Bellamy
being the youngest used to come in for

more than maybe the other two.

Any bright ideas, Bellamy?

Er... I didn't think so.

I think there's a great bond between
Bellamy and Blaketon. We're going in

clothes, Sarge.

But what do you think, Bellamy? We're
trying to catch him, not warn him off.

Even though, realistically, Blaketon has
shouted at Bellamy more than anybody

else. While Blaketon was getting cross
with him, the rest of the world could

enjoy seeing him sort of slither,
wiggle, dance his way out of whatever

he got into.

All right, Bellamy, just tell me this.

Where's that lurid tie you were wearing
in the pub?

Forget being in trouble at work. They
should have thrown the book at Bellamy

crimes against fashion. I'm always
fascinated because people say all the

the 70s were a great period for clothes
and for fashion.

Well, not if Bellamy's got anything to
go by, surely.

Oh,

God, I used to hate half of my cosies.

Some of them cardigans.

Velveteen cardigans.

Sorry, it's daft.

and a bright orange tangerine shirt that
looked like a bintango.

Ginger Heard mentioned never wear
orange. That's, I think, the rule, isn't

Orange, pink or red, and I think he's
broken that rule on several occasions.

Then, whoever, cos, you know, Bellamy
essentially is somebody's sidekick, and

you turn round and they've got all funky
gear on and nice fitting outfits.

Yeah, I like the tie.

Very tasteful. And then I'd be there in
this bright orange shirt and a naked

lady on a kipper tie.

Is this it?

There's no wonder so many ladies left
him.

While Bellamy's dress sense may have put
off some ladies, he never stopped

trying to find that someone special.

This wannabe womaniser was always first
on the scene when it was time to take

down a girl's particulars.

A girl loves a man in a uniform, and I
deeply suspect that's the reason that he

joined the force, because he was
convinced that it would get him the

Nothing.

Just I've never seen anybody use all
their fingers before.

I think he's very attractive to women.

I think he seems very naive and I think
a lot of women want to mother him.

Do you really live here with your gran?

It's just a temporary arrangement.

I suppose you can say he's been lucky in
the respect that there always seems to

be a woman after him.

I owe you one.

I'll hold you to that.

I think that he managed to have so many.

So many dates and to be seen with so
many ladies on his arm, I think, was

a lucky thing for him. Pine, please,
Gina.

Whatever else he's having.

He's had his fair share of women, I
suppose, in the show. I only had two

in the show, and one blew up, so...

The first girl who tried to tame
Bachelor Bellamy

and get a ring on her finger was
Jennifer Galvin back in 1993.

Told you about Newton, have you?

Yeah. Congratulations.

Thank you. He's had lots of encounters
that have not been best for his life.

Bill! He got engaged because he believed
that the young lady in question was

pregnant. It finds out that she's not
got the baby and, in fact, is back with

her ex.

And he flips his lid and goes and ducks
him up.

We got really into the fighting scene.

We'd rehearsed it and rehearsed it, and
he just didn't seem to get his hand up

inside.

So his chin hit the wall and he
concussed himself. We had to send him to

hospital, so it was quite real, that
fight.

Bellamy's heart took many more
batterings along the way, but it looked

luck had changed when a sultry brunette
walked into his life.

Black.

Debbie Black.

24 -minute drive.

They met when her television was stolen.

They kicked the back door in.

It's locals, I know it.

I think it was love at first sight for
Bellamy.

His relationship with Debbie kind of
came from nowhere, really.

This is Debbie.

Hello. Hello.

Debbie sort of came into his life.

In like a whirlwind, I suppose you might
say, because all of a sudden she was

there, and then moments later they were
married.

That's from today.

She'll be no longer known as Debbie
Black, but Mrs Bellamy, my wife.

It was so obvious that she was the wrong
person for him, and it was

heartbreaking, actually, what happened
to him.

What widow Debbie Black conveniently
forgot to mention was that her dead

was really alive and kicking and was
back in Aidensfield to steal her away.

What's going on, Debbie?

She never wanted to treat him badly.

She was enormously grateful to him. She
genuinely loved him.

Your dead husband is standing outside.

I find out in a beggar that, you know,
you've got to stay and, you know, we'll

sort it out.

So it was quite sad.

To be honest, as an actor, to have those
final scenes, there's nothing I can do

to make this day.

Poor Bellamy.

Just got this enormous slap in the face.

I do love you.

Just go.

Go to hell.

So Debbie said farewell to Phil and left
with her husband Barry, taking

Bellamy's heart with her.

If I've had any hate mail for treating
him badly, someone's kept it from me.

In Alth Ventress, Bellamy found a
kindred spirit.

Alth? This odd couple put a smile on
everyone's face.

Phil! You'll laugh when you hear this.

Well, of course, Bellamy and Ventress
have been together since the very

beginning. I remember Ventress and
Bellamy as being, for me, the real

the piece.

Bill basically did nothing and Mark
danced around him.

I think a lot of these moments makes him
as oblivious to because they always did

it behind his back.

Have you got a clean nappy?

And I think a lot of the fun came when I
did actually find out what they were up

to.

You would never put them together, this
old wise man.

And then this fellow who was trying to
be Jack the Lad, but was clearly not.

You wouldn't imagine that there'd be a
relationship there, a friendship.

Nevertheless, over the years they became
firm friends, so when Bellamy needed a

best man, there was only one choice.

Or so Ventress thought.

What am I going to do about a best man,
then?

Oh, don't be so on.

A mate who's stuck with you through
thick and thin?

You'll find him.

Well, I'm glad you think so.

I like those moments, you know, when you
get that... What?

I've been stupid, haven't I?

It's almost like Ventress is thinking
and Bellamy knows that he's got

up his sleeve.

You're staring me right in the face.

Who is?

The obvious choice for best man.

Me?

The man who knows me better than anyone.

Oh, you give me great pleasure.

The third member of this cracked police
squad has changed a

few times over the years, from dashing
PC Rowan to daredevil PC Bradley.

The folk of Aidensfield have been
protected by many a two -wheeled

And when PC Walker arrived on the scene,
it wasn't just the bike that was

flashed. The authentic wool uniforms
worn by all of Aidensfield's finest may

have looked the same, but his was rather
different.

What is wrong with you? You've been
scratching ever since we got here.

On day one I said to him, please, would
you mind if I had the trousers lined,

you know.

They put some silky sort of lining in
there. And I kept it a secret, I didn't

tell anybody, cos obviously that's a bit
of a wussy actor.

Silk line for it, wouldn't it?

Schmuckhead here, 16 flipping years in
this show, scratching away and tutting.

Mr Flipping Genius from down south comes
waltzing up, doesn't he?

Silk lines it.

Even though he didn't have his lines, he
got round it by wearing women's tights.

Every now and again in Heartbeat,
bungling Bellamy became Phil the

stepped up to save the day.

Shoot me and I'll take you with me.

At times I just think, what's going on?
Bellamy's going in kicking down the door

and I'm outside on the radio or
whatever. I mean, this just wasn't on.

What's nice about Bellamy is that he's
always willing to do the best that he

and if that means that he'll stand in
front of a moving car.

That means that he'll, you know, put his
life on the line, and he will.

When Fifi Crane's life was hanging in
the balance, Bellamy didn't hesitate to

jump to the rescue.

I think that was Bellamy's most heroic
moment, where he risks

his own life trying to save the life of
a fellow officer.

We can do this! We can do it! Come on!

It was brilliant fun to do, because,
like, boys and toys, you know, we've got

pretend to be something.

For five days, I was hanging off this
bridge.

Afterwards, I sort of needed a
chiropractor for about three months.

But this time, Bellamy's brave efforts
were in vain.

And come to think of it, Bellamy's had a
few near misses himself.

Put your hands up.

Hands up!

I think he's been near to death a few
times, hasn't he?

In fact, he's been shot twice before.

Phil had been shot so many times, you'd
be forgiven for thinking he was

bulletproof.

Go on!

Shoot me!

Lunacy. Lunacy. He would do that.

Mental.

Not me, I can tell you.

He's lucky to have been alive for as
long as he has.

After a busy day crime -fighting, Phil
loved nothing better than going for a

drink at the Aidensfield Arms.

Was it something you wanted?

Yeah. I'll have a pint.

But it wasn't always pints being pulled.

Do you want a drink?

I thought you'd never ask.

We all knew barmaid Gina Ward was the
true love of Bellamy's life.

I think from the moment that she stepped
out of that bubble car and he saw the

miniskirt and the long boots, I think he
absolutely fell in love with her.

Gina and Bellamy have been on and off
for years and, you know, the public have

always wanted them to get together. We
get letters saying, when are Gina and

Bellamy going to marry?

I think he's pursued her and chased her
and tried to woo her. What more could a

girl ask for?

A lot of things actually, Phil.

And I think she thought he was a prat.

What's that smell?

Me, I think.

Oh, it's horrible.

Some of the jewellery that he used to
get, I mean, me and Trish used to laugh

our head off.

Phil.

It's gorgeous.

But you'd just think, you know, you'd
run a thousand miles, if somebody gave

this as a present, you would want to be
near them.

Oh, boy.

Thought you'd like it.

Ten series in, and Phil finally plucked
up the courage to pop the question.

But his plans for a romantic proposal
were scuppered when Gina went to the

place. She thought she'd been stood up,
and he was left high and dry.

Well, so -to.

You're back early.

She was furious, stood in the pub.

He came storming into the pub.

And so he proposed to her there and then
in the middle of the pub, which was

quite sweet.

Georgina Ward, will you marry me?

Oh, Phil.

Sadly for Phil, the answer was no.

Because I don't love you.

And Gina caught time on their
relationship.

But this love affair would keep
Aidensfield and the public guessing for

years to come.

Will they? Won't they? Will they? Won't
they? It's been on and then off and then

on again and then off again and then on
again.

They always meant to be together, but
it's just... It's kind of like Ross and

Rachel from Friends, you know?

It wasn't long before these two were
back on again.

Once more, Phil had the woman of his
dreams, and when Gina surprised him with

some unexpected news, it looked like
their life together would be complete.

I'm pregnant.

Fantastic!

Hey!

Hey, everyone!

I'm going to be a dad!

With a newborn baby and wedding booked,
Everything looked just dreamy. Gina.

Phil.

I've got a little boy.

A little boy?

That's right.

He's gorgeous.

But Bellamy's dreams of a happy family
life were shattered when they discovered

all was not well with baby Daniel.

I'd just had Jake, my own baby, and I
had to go back to work to film that

episode.

And it was so sad.

There was hushed silence on every day of
us filming, especially in the scenes

around the incubator.

I kept breaking down into tears.

The director didn't want that. He wanted
Gina to play it a different way and to

be quite strong and just to break down
towards the end of the episode. But

during the rehearsals and everything, I
was just a gibbering wreck. I was in

such a state.

I'm sorry.

This is hard to say, but I'm afraid he
won't recover.

I sit and watch that and it's me and I
still cry.

Oh, God, I was in bits.

Absolute bits.

After all they'd been through, Phil and
Gina deserved some happiness.

So after three proposals, two
engagements and more knockbacks than

remember, Phil finally got Gina down the
aisle.

I now pronounce you man and wife.

In front of the whole of Aidensfield,
and to the relief of millions of

fans, they finally tied the knot.

If anybody was going to talk about the
show, the first question I would be, you

know, when are you going to get with
Gina? It means I can do my shopping a

more at least now that we got married,
because that's one of the questions

nobody has to ask anymore, so I'm dead
chuffed about that, to be honest.

Do you know what?

I'm the luckiest man alive.

I know you are.

When I arrived, they said, just be
careful if you get married, because as

as someone gets married, they leave the
show.

Really? Well, that's great news.

And now, as soon as Bellamy gets
married, it was only a matter of time.

But Phil's happiness and hopes for a
family would soon be destroyed when an

incident came up that was especially
close to his heart.

In suit, please.

One Bellamy lost Daniel.

If there's ever an episode where there's
children involved, Bellamy takes it

really personally. He doesn't want any
harm to kids.

So it seemed only right that Bellamy
died saving a child.

Dad! If you're the best the British
police force can offer these days, then

we're doomed.

And that's how we'll remember him. A
gentle and much -loved hero.

I'm kind of mixed emotions at the
moment. I'm very happy and giddy, but at

same time, I don't think I started
thinking until you mentioned it about

fact I'm going to go, so who knows?

I've got to be honest, the first couple
of days you do it and it's all...

absolute genuine tears and emotions and
then after a while you're thinking I'm

dry as a bone here, I don't know how I'm
going to pull this off but thankfully I

think I managed to pull it off

I think it is apt that when he goes,
it's in doing something very valiant,

that's how it should be.

He's always the first to throw himself
into an affray. He dies a hero's death.

So many people loved Bellamy.

Yeah, he went out with a bang.

No!

I'm really looking forward to saying
goodbye to the 1960s.

Really looking forward to it.

Really, really looking forward to it.
