I was beginning to wonder

get off on the ship's bow.

- Giddy up.

- Now I reckon it's about time
you gave me an explanation.

- His name is King.

Captain Ezra King of the
clipper ship Gallant Lady.

We were in the China Seas
heading for Hong Kong,

and we hit squally weather.

It was very low visibility,

all the crew had gone down with gut rot.

- With what?

- Oh the cook had served
up some sort of stew

with salt pork,

And I was the only one
who hadn't touched it,

and I was the only one who
wasn't too sick to man the wheel.

There was no danger,

the only reefs in the area
were 10 degrees to port.

All I had to do was to
keep the ship on course,

but I put her onto the reef,

hard,

and I ripped the bottom right
out of her and she went down.

With all the hands,
with all the passengers.

I killed them Matt, 120
men, women and children.

- So this is what you're dreams
are about, your nightmares.

- But it gets worse

because if King is real
maybe they all are,

maybe I just dreamt the whole thing.

That can't be because,

I saw it, I was there,

(tense music)

from the shipwreck.

really the way it works.

You see the owners of the ship
collect the insurance money,

or the owner's of the
cargo, not the captain.

- Well then how did King become so rich?

- Well no one really knows,

but it has been confirmed
that the Gallant Lady

did founder in the South China Sea.

- That much of Duncan's
nightmare is true then.

- I'm afraid so.

- From what you've said
Dad it would seem that,

Duncan's scars could be
more mental than physical.

- He's not loony if that's
what you're implying Colin.

If he was behind the wheel
when that ship went aground

then that's a heavy burden to carry.

another with a rifle and one on horseback.

and bring back some troopers.

You let the troopers handle King.

(suspenseful music)

will be needing ammunition?

- Yeah a box of 100 please.

- Marching off to war Duncan?

- Just going hunting.

- Well Dad could've lent you a rifle,

so could I for that matter.

- I thought it was

to take to hell with you.

(action music)

- One thing I'll never forget

I know it's not exactly a burial at sea,

but under the circumstances
it's the best we can do.

(thudding)

The real gold was loaded on board
a ship bound for Melbourne

where Captain King and his
men were waiting to collect.

who caused the wreck.

I was the one who put that ship
onto the reef single handed.

an essential part of the plan.

Now the chest full of
lead had to disappear

before it reached Hong Kong,

otherwise the rouse
would've been discovered.

King had to be sure

that the Gallant Lady never reached port.

- Well I achieved that
for him no question.

- [Matt] Yeah but it wasn't your fault.

- I should have missed the reef by miles.

- Not with the compass
out by a full 10 degrees.

You see what he did was
he attached a magnet

to the compass binnacle

so when you thought you were steering

10 degrees clear of the reef,

you were actually heading straight for it.

- None of it was your fault Duncan.

(dramatic music)

- Would you like to join the others?

- I'm sorry I'm not feeling very sociable.

- You can't keep avoiding people.

They'll think something's wrong.

- I know.

- I'll grant you anything
