Lucho Fulci had three movies on the
video nasty list, the most notorious of

which, and the most famous of course, is
Zombie Flesh Eaters. Now this was

originally released as an ex
-certificate version, but then suddenly

version come out, strong, uncut version,
just so you were in no two minds of

what you were going to see here.

Obviously, this is Dawn of the Dead rip
-off. Enzo Castellari was originally

going to direct Zombie Flesh Eaters, or
Zombie 2, it was originally called, to

cash in on the Italian title of Dawn of
the Dead.

Whatever it is, it makes the dead stand
up and war.

But the producer realized that Fulci had
actually come off two quite big

successes, Don't Torture a Duckling and
The Psychic, and so decided to use him

instead. When the earth spit out the
dead, they will come back to suck the

from the living.

They had no money on the film, though,
as Gennetto De Rossi, who did the

makeup effects, told me the reason why
he used red clay for the zombie effect,

because he really didn't have any money
to do anything else.

It's a pretty famous film for many
reasons.

I mean, the splinter in the eye, I
think, is the one scene that most of us

well remember.

I love this film. It's zombie flesh
eaters.

That's one of those movies that is a
video nasty and it's a brilliant film.

music, the whole thing, the whole way
it's put together, the spirit of that

is made by a real horror director who
understands it. And that one scene, if

watch the scene with the eye, which you
think the eye popping out, the eye on

the stick scene is going to be a kind of
garbage scene when you actually

remember it and go back. When you go
back to Zombie Fleshy and watch it

it's brilliant.

That scene is brilliant. It's really
tense. In the uncut version, you have to

watch the uncut version.

And the sequence where you'd be in
school and you'd say, oh, there's a

scene where a shark attacks them and
then the zombie bites the shark. And I

think it still works. It's a real shark.

I did try and speak to Fulci about this
movie.

We never really liked each other.

We had a very famous run -in on City of
the Living Dead. I tried to interview

him, and because he'd been out all night
the night before, gambling and

drinking, he threw up on me.

It actually wasn't the best of
introductions, in fact. Our relationship

ever got beyond that until he actually
ended up working with Dario on.
