Dream number 43.

Type: dream-memory.

I haven’t had a dream in the past
couple of months, but last night I had one.

It was one of those recurring dreams.

I was aware I was dreaming,

and I took the opportunity to walk along
those streets I haven’t seen in so long.

It was around the year 2040,
when I moved back to Recife.

THE CULT

2040 was an important
year to me for two reasons.

First, as I said, it was the year when
I decided to leave the Space Colonies

and move back to Recife.

The money from the Colonies was
worth thrice the money in Recife.

I soon managed to redecorate
our old house just as it was before.

Well, not exactly as it was.

I also didn’t have a hard time
finding a place to have fun.

Back then, I never slept.

Like everyone else, I had
taken the mandatory vaccine

that freed our bodies
from the need to sleep.

I also didn’t dream, since I
never got enough rest for that.

Sleep belonged in
museums and history books

as an exotic custom
from past civilizations.

One of the most interesting things
about coming back was realizing

that Recife dwellers, although
vaccinated, were still able to sleep.

Maybe on account of too
much idleness and free time,

the vaccine didn’t take well in that city.

Oh, while away from my parents,

I also enjoyed spending the whole
day reading a genre they despised:

science fiction.

Hey, who’s that red-haired
one with those papers, huh?

He’s this super boring
guy who’s there all the time.

You’d think he’s there cruising,

but he actually just wants you to
read some poetry books he wrote.

So, if he ever approaches you, get out.

You remind me a lot of a boy
I knew here when I was a kid.

When I saw you the first
time, I was sure you were him.

I’ve never lived nearby though.

Yeah, no, no, now I know it wasn’t you.

But when I got here in Recife everyone
I looked at I thought was him, you know?

I think it was my hoping to meet him.

But, I dunno, it’s kind of impossible.

But who was this guy? What
was so special about him?

He was my neighbor.

A year younger than me, I reckon.

And he was the first guy I
ever really fell in love with.

And the only one.

Wow...

His family moved out of the
neighborhood when I was ten or so,

and I never saw him again.

No, wait. I misspoke.

A few months after he moved
away, he came by with his mom.

When he came to greet me,
I faced away and ignored him.

I’m appalled when I remember it.

It’s like, where did I get that
from? Such drama at that age.

You must’ve really been
in love with him, right?

That’s fucked up. There are some
things we sorta... just know, you know?

Kinda crazy, right?

I was totally obsessed with him.

Truth is I never got over him.

Sometimes, at the end of
the day, I find myself thinking...

“Hey, I didn’t even think about him today.”

A thousand ways I’ve tried to find him.

I know for sure he
didn’t go to the Colonies,

so his family must have
stayed here in Recife.

But it’s as if he had
vanished without a trace.

Was he cute?

He was my idea of perfection.

In fact, not being able to
find him has a bright side

’Cause if he turned ugly...

...I don’t think I’d have
the strength to recover.

I was amazed at how quickly
you fell asleep last night.

I think it’s so cute that
you guys still sleep here.

There isn’t much to do anyways...

Fuck, I forgot Bruno’s party.

That guy I told you about? He’ll be there.

Shit.

Are you out of your mind to go
out at this time of night here in Recife?

You do realize some people here go

I quite like walking.

It’s something I missed in the Colonies,
no one there ever walks anywhere.

And here there’s even
this sense of adventure.

Everyone must’ve gotten there
by the end of the afternoon.

only leaving after sunrise ok?

As time went by, I ended up
acquiring some of the local habits

and I got used to sleeping again.

- How are things up there in the Colonies?
- Boring.

I wanna go there. I’ve
been so sick of Recife lately.

Honey, you have just gone
way down in my estimation.

Not everyone shares your
love for old stuff, my darling.

- Did you live with your parents there?
- Uh-huh.

Are they okay with you
coming back to this backwater?

They must have been relieved actually...

for not having to go through
any more embarrassing moments...

since I was the only one

Within reason.

Besides, my sister has already
met all the family requirements.

So they were allowed to leave me be.

I’m appalled by those people
who act like they’re programmed.

Who do things precisely
as expected of them.

Who always keep right on track.

Speaking of which, are there
many gay guys in the Colonies?

Tons.

But they’re all acting like reputable
straight couples, you know?

-Please! -So tacky.

Even so, I still feel like going there.

But back to that other topic:

Best TV show from before
the Migrations period.

Oh, I’m not sure: either “Sailor
Moon” or “Power Rangers”.

Who’s that one over there?

My goodness, that woman is everywhere!

Folks here call her "The
Baroness of The Square".

So many tiles! Was this
a school or a hospital?

That’s so Recife.

Oh, I think the science
fair used to be in this room.

The pool was over there.

The swim coach had a bird cage
with thrush near the locker room.

Aww, he’s nostalgic.

Not exactly.

I don’t have the best
memories about this place.

This isn’t nostalgia.

It’s something else.

It’s as if my body still
knows this place, you know?

As soon as I was inside, it’s
like it knew exactly how to react.

“I laughed, I cried”.

But no "The Sims" was better
than the first. It’s unrivalled.

Oh no, I beg to differ.

Although, the Goth family, good times.

No, but the best was Claire the Bear.

Can you imagine a massive bear in your
front yard in the middle of the night...

...scattering rubbish
around the neighborhood?

Amazing game.

No, sweetie, the best character
was Miss Crumplebottom.

The old lady downtown who scolded people
who kissed in public. Now we’re talking!

You should’ve brought booze from the
Colonies. It gets worse by the day here.

When I was a child, I remember
thinking that Recife held some mystery

I would unveil one day.

Hey, we better go. It’s getting dark.

I think I had a dream.

I just can’t remember what it was.

Weird.

Leaving already?

I’m going to that protest.

You don’t even care, do you? The
arrests the police is making here.

Oh please.

There’s no reason in this world strong
enough to get me out of this bed today.

Have you seen the news? They
said the police will carry on terrorizing

And I figured you didn’t waste your time
with these Colonies shenanigans either.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that.

A friend of my mom’s used to
say that I had a disinterest in life

that was almost pathological.

She was perfectly right, of course.

2040 was an important
year to me for two reasons.

First, it was the year when
I moved back to Recife.

Second, in 2040 I found out about The Cult.

I don’t know exactly when
I started noticing the signs.

Look, this is what I was talking about.

Gee, no idea what it is. You
found this glued to a wall?

Yup.

Wait a minute.

Once I was watching TV and
something very strange happened.

The transmission signal started to falter.

The TV went, like, crazy, buzzing
with static. And then it was over.

I thought it was gonna go back to normal,

but then it showed an
image just like this one.

No, it was this one, I’m sure.

-Was there any sound afterwards? -No.

Any more images?

Again, no. This was on the air
for, like, five minutes and then gone.

And the Colonies regular
broadcasts resumed.

When was this?

A couple of months ago, I guess?

And nobody else mentioned this? Like,
a bunch of people must have seen it.

I don’t know. I remember
I had even felt a bit scared.

Because this was around the
time a guy I knew killed himself.

He was running away
from the Colonies Police.

But then I forgot about it.

So many tiles! Was this
a school or a hospital?

That’s so Recife.

The hardest part of recording a dream

is remembering the details that
start to become vague and fade away.

From now onwards, our substance shall
be mixed with all the beverages in Recife.

The dream shall have again
the importance it always had.

The substance brewed by The Cult cancelled
the effects of the mandatory vaccine.

It was being mixed with
wine and other drinks in Recife,

but the goal was an even broader range.

The little we know nowadays about this case

is what was reported at
the time by the Colonies:

the leader was murdered by the police,

members were scattered on
the eve of executing their plan

and all of the substance
was taken into custody.

My family’s money ran out.

Today I live brankrupt and
isolated in a space ivory tower.

I wish I could better unravel the
dreams I’ve been secretly recording here.

I can’t even tell apart what’s
a whim of my imagination

and what’s a memory of
something I actually lived.

But I know this dream will recur.

I hope to uncover more next time.

Before I run out of the last
substance vials I managed to bring here.
