We have no reason to believe
he's changed security tactics.

We invaded Afghanistan , that's a reason .

I remember reading the script.

One of the best parts I have ever read.

To me, it reminded me of the character
Jodie Foster plays in Silence of the Lambs.

Immediately, I knew I wanted to play the role.

I kind of understood
the character's focus and obsession.

Like how you could be
so consumed with something .

I really connected to that.

I need a picket line along the GT highway

and men spaced at intervals
along the road and at every exit.

Maya, I know.

So you agree with me now, this is important.

No, I've just learned from my predecessor

that life is better
when I don't disagree with you .

By saying you agree with me now,
sounds like we've had a long relationship.

At least, how I read the lines,

he's not agreeing that the substance of
your request is important,

but if you've requested it, it's important
and he has to dignify it.

We shot in Amman, Jordan,
and we shot in Chandigarh, India,

which is, I think Chandigarh is about
150 miles from the border of Pakistan.

So, you really are on the other side
of the world

and cut-off from what I'm used to.

We had a very conscious effort
to keep a low profile.

I didn 't want to do anything
that would garner a lot of attention.

I would cover my head

and I just wanted to
disappear into the shadows.

This is actually what. . .
I've been wearing this for 30 hours.

And I definitely drew on that experience

when playing Maya,
working in that part of the world .

She got you there, dude.

When playing this character
and approaching the role,

I was really moved and excited
by the arc that the character has.

We get to see her, in essence,
grow up throughout the film.

The film takes place
over this 1 0-year time period .

And so we really watch
Jessica and her character

grow from where she starts in the beginning

as a young targeter who's trying
to get her feet wet in Pakistan,

to somebody who really builds the case

that eventually launches
the entire nation on this mission .

You just want me to nail some
low-level Mullah-crack-a-dulla,

so you can check that box
on your résumé that says

while you were in Pakistan ,
you got a real terrorist!

But the truth is,
you don't understand Pakistan !

And you don't know al-Qaeda !

As she becomes consumed
with finding Usama bin Laden ,

we see her start to lose the self
that she arrived with

and become something else.

And at the end of the movie,

it's almost like she doesn 't know
who she is anymore.

And that, as an actor,
to play that arc and that story of a character

is why I do this.

For me to say,
"I don't care if they get sleep or not,"

is such a great line.

My guys don't get any sleep
tracking the threats within Pakistan .

Right, I understand .

But, you know, I don't really care
if your guys get sleep or not!

I could say it nicer,
but I think we lose then , the like...

"Yeah , but I don't really care."

I think to have a woman of
Jessica 's caliber was crucial

and the fact that her and I
are very comfortable together

because we had
some very uncomfortable scenes.

And watch your back
when you get back to Pakistan .

Everyone knows you there now.

Jessica has such a nimble
and flexible intelligence.

And her ability to give that character a kind
of ferocious intensity,

yet a humanity at the same time,

was a phenomenal experience.

Jessica was playing somebody
who was very intense

and that takes an awful lot out ofyou,
emotionally and physically.

And she was tireless in her professionalism .

She's a real actor.

She went to Juilliard. She was amazing
in everything I've seen her do.

The responsibility that we had

in trying to make sure
we were telling the right story

and to keep it very accurate,

it was just all-consuming for me.
