In my opinion, the war on terror touched everybody around the world.

Especially the 9/11 families,

and the military and intelligence professionals.

First responders.

I have to say, I'm humbled and honored to tell their story.

Okay, that's good .

After H urt Locker, I began working on a story about the hunt for Usama bin Laden.

December 6, 2001. They had Usama bin Laden in a two square mile grid.

And then he escaped out the back door to Pakistan.

And in the middle of working on that story, May 1, 2011 happened.

History inserted itself into our project.

And we had to start a new story.

Three. . . Two. . . One. . . Action!

The story was challenging because everybody knows the ending,

but nobody knows how we got there.

And the events themselves were extremely dramatic.

So it added a kind of inherent tension to the piece.

Here we go. Action.

Can I be honest with you? I'm bad news.

I'm not your friend .

This being arguably one of the seminal events

of the early century.

It's important subject matter. You want to make it right.

Now, I'm gonna have him keep moving forward .

Whoever's on him ...

What I love about Kathryn Bigelow

is the juxtaposition of this very charming , supportive, feminine woman ,

and these testerone-fuelled movies that she makes.

I don't think any other director could've made this film .

Except for Kathryn .

She was really creative and really supportive in letting me try my own impulses

and ideas that I had.

But she also was a great captain and guide to where the story needed to be.

At the end of the day,

this story is what matters. Characters are what matter.

-Let's try that again . -Okay.

I know it's a lot of stuff, but hopefully with the sleeper guys...

-No sweat. -It might work better.

And I think what was extremely surprising to me

was to learn that there were women that played pivotal parts in this hunt,

who were exclusively working on the hunt for Usama bin Laden.

She's only been here maybe a week.

He got the phone call . Get your ass to Islamabad .

Kathryn is a really well-prepared , organized director.

Now, when you say "map of the earth ," what you're saying is it's terrain mapping .

Yeah , we're gonna go...

Doing the whole raid was quite a tough experience.

We were kind ofjumping around the house, shooting this piece and that piece.

You know, it's a lot to keep in your head .

This is great. Great, great, great.

What I try to do with action sequences is put the audience on the ground,

in the middle of the event.

She's asking if he can fall with his gun slightly higher so it looks like

she's a little bit closer to it.

-Of course. -She's terrific.

And she can bring things to life in a way, with a kind of immediacy

and intensity that's world-class.

Yeah , you're in that one. I'm not sure who goes on this one.

To have Kathryn make the film was very exciting. It was like doing

Hamlet for the first time.

Wake up. No falling asleep here, man .

As an actor, we all want to have that opportunity

to play a pertinent piece of work,

something that's just really about this world that we've all been through .

Detainees could withhold his location for any number of reasons.

There's a certain amount of, "Damn , I was part of that."

Boom !

I would say working with this cast is one of the great experiences of my life.

Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Ehle, Jason Clarke, Ėdgar Ramirez,

Mark Strong, Stephen Dillane, Kyle Chandler, James Gandolfini.

Just a phenomenal experience.

I think coming in from here.

And the movie is really a portrait of determination.

It's specific to the characters who are portraying intelligence professionals.

We all wanted to pay tribute to their professionalism,

their dedication, their courage, their sacrifice and their commitment.

N ice. Very nice.

My hope is that Zero Dark Thirty will be seen as shining a light

on a very long and dark decade.
