My name is Carl Panzram...

number 31614, United States Penitentiary
at Leavenworth, Kansas.

I was born June 28, 1891,
on a small farm in Minnesota.

My parents were German immigrants,
hardworking...

ignorant and poor.

I had five brothers and a sister,
all decent, all God-fearing...

all except me.

By the age of nine,
I was a drunkard.

By ten, I was a thief.

They sent me to the Red Wing,
Minnesota State Training School...

where I was taught how to be
a clean, upright citizen...

During those years, I met

in the Oregon State Penitentiary.

Some are cold and wet,

In every joint I was in, there was
always some kind of torture...

One of the boys got hold of a gun
and nailed the warden.

My only sorrow:
I didn't get to do it first.

A new warden was named.
Ex-army captain named Charles Casey.

Big old, thick mick he was,
but pretty good scout as it turned out.

No one had ever seen
anything like what he was doing.

There was no religion about him,
no brutality, no punishment of any kind.

Actually, the worst you could get
was peelin' potatoes.

we all called him 'Spud.'

At first I thought he was crazy...

and that was wrong.
