tale, a tale of a fateful trip that

started from this topic board aboard
this tiny ship.

Now you see, Teddy, for the ideal
martini, you take seven parts of...

go. And now for the vermouth.

Oh, hello there, and welcome to season
two of Gilligan's Island, Goofs, Heirs,

and Oddities.

I am author David Calderola, and I
invite you to view the three -part

presentation of my latest book, Winter
Solstice.

In Season 2, we are going to not only
examine more goofs and gaffs, but I will

also throw in a bit of trivia along the
way.

Since most of what needs to be said was
said in the intro to Season 1, let's

jump right into Season 2.

We start with a new opening scene for
the new season, and we still have a

of seven passengers and crew.

but we still have that mysterious ace
man on board.

We still have the little boat in the
storm that does not have the loft that

first boat does.

After the boat is beat, you'll notice
that it does not have the three

windows the first boat had.

So now we have three different boats
just in the opening scene.

Well, we have a new island, and at least
this one has a raised midsection that

might accommodate the hill and mountain
shots.

When I was young, I used to refer to
this as Battleship Island because of its

contour. See for yourself.

A family of natives land on the island
to find a husband for their rotunda

daughter. The native mother on the left
is Henny Backus, Jim Backus' wife.

Russ Greve plays the father figure and
Mary Foran plays the rotunda daughter.

But believe it or not, Mary Foran is
four years older than Russ.

She's 46 and he's 42.

As the camera moves in and pulls out in
this scene, you can see the boom mic's

shadow on the wall move also.

Gilligan has been challenged by Haruki
for the girl, so he needs to practice

spear throwing at a target that looks a
lot like it has been spray painted by an

expert. It must have been. You can see
the spray painting equipment to the

right.

As Gilligan rushes to throw, you can see
actor Eddie Littlesky standing with his

left shoulder at Gilligan, but the next
scene shows him standing directly square

to Gilligan.

Now, I said in the first season's video
that I would return to the issue of the

skipper's military career, but only as a
bit of trivia here.

Eddie Littlesky, a full -blooded Oglala
Sioux Indian, was a World War II veteran

and served in the Navy.

Alan Hale was also a World War II
veteran, but he served in the Coast

That's right, Eddie, the native, is the
real World War II sailor. Gilligan has

the deciding vote in an upcoming beauty
contest.

As Gilligan falls to the ground in this
scene, you can see a cigarette butt in

the sand.

It may have been Bob Denver's.

You can't see it too well in this screen
capture, but his fingers are nicotine

-stained. You'll see a little more proof
later that apparently Bob Denver was a

heavy smoker.

The gang needs glue for the lens of a
Martian probe that landed on the island.

The skipper asks Gilligan what does he
know about tapping trees.

Gilligan says he can do it because he
saw it in a movie once, but he already

it in season one.

Two strange -looking men are supposed to
be scientists, trying to re -establish

contact with the Martian probe.

It looks like the one on the left has
the letter L starting his name, and the

one on the right has the letter S.

But Mr.

L calls Mr.

S George, and Mr. S calls Mr.

L John.

This is something that will occur
numerous times over the second and third

season, a segue that starts with a few
seconds of an exterior hut shot,

by the action supposedly within it.

But the show constantly gets their huts
confused.

This is an exterior night shot of the
Skipper and Gilligan's hut, but the

takes place in the Howell's hut.

Mr. Howell is dreaming he is a
prospector that has struck it rich.

Here we can see the cameraman getting
his fingers in the way.

Mr. and Mrs. Howell have lost their
money, so the others tried to teach them

some basic skills.

Lovey says she knows nothing of sewing,
but she sure seemed capable the numerous

times when she had to whip up a blazer
or jacket for someone.

This is probably the most recognized
goof on the Internet.

Gilligan has marked the vodka bottle he
filled with water with an X.

The Russians drank vodka while the men
drank water.

But when Ivan passes out, he's holding
the bottle marked with the X.

Gilligan had become a radio when he was
accidentally belted in the mouth by the

skipper. As he falls over the table, he
smashes the real radio.

This radio is an all -transistor radio,
but the part the professor holds clearly

shows the sockets for vacuum tubes.

The skipper is preparing Gilligan to
take command if anything should happen

him. but when he is trying to
demonstrate his skill at calling out

member and assigning them a weapon to
fetch, he tells Mr. Howe to get Item 2,

which is actually the shield.

Jim Backus was supposed to be assigned
Weapon 5, the club, so he fetches it

anyway.

As Gilligan tries to march the group
back to camp, marching backwards

of course, he falls over the cliff
wearing the skipper's cap, but he is

shown hanging from a limb with his white
sailor's cap on.

The mosquitoes have landed on the island
by helicopter with all of their bags

and instruments, but the helicopter is a
small two -seater that couldn't

possibly accommodate them.

Here we go again.

Exterior girl's hut, interior skipper
and Gilligan's hut.

Gilligan hauls a World War II mine
ashore, that is, if you can believe it.

The skipper remarks later in the episode
that the mine had 600 pounds of

explosives in it.

Can you believe scrawny Gilligan hauled
it ashore?

What's more, it's supposed to be
magnetic, but it does not attract

belt buckle, his fishing reel, or his
genuine solid steel four -leaf lucky

around his neck.

As the men flee the mine because it has
been activated, we see Mr. Howell in his

yellow striped sweater and a dark blue
shirt.

Less than a minute later, he has not
only fetched a civil defense hat, but he

has managed to change his sweater and
shirt, too.

The men return to the mine which is near
the raft they were building.

Notice a hole in one of the phony logs.

The professor has removed the seaweed
and is examining the mine.

The color streaks on the mine run from
right to left.

But when Gilligan and Mr. Howell are
being pulled to the magnetic mine, the

streaks run from front to back.

Somehow the mine has been rotated 90
degrees.

Of course, the metal reel is still
unattractive.

When Gilligan and Mr. Howell get pinned
to the mine, the streaks are running

right to left again.

Only this is the side that was opposite
to the original side we first saw.

Notice the ring above Mr. Howell's left
arm that we hadn't seen before.

Everyone has demagnetized, and the
skipper is about to give the non

brass wrench to Gilligan.

But Mr. Howell is still wearing his belt
with metal buckle.

As the mind is slipping forward, you can
see that the skipper still has his ring

on.

As the mind settles, we can see Mr.

Howell's metal necklace.

Well, at least they remember to remove
the chain that the skipper wears around

his neck, at least until he straightens
up.

The skipper has a hole in his left
sleeve, visible from both the front and

shots, but when he fetches the cards and
returns, no hole.

The professor tells Gilligan that there
is a metal rudder on the raft. It will

attract the mine like a magnet.

But it doesn't need to, as the mine is
tied to the raft.

and the skipper is yelling to Gilligan
to cut the rope.

The hatch on the mine is on the raft's
right side.

Moments later it is on the left side,
and later it is back on the right side

again.

All of a sudden, as if by magic, the
rope is gone and the mine no longer

the rudder.

Between the use of both the magnetism to
the rudder, the rope, and the

unexplained way the mind detaches
itself, it really seems like they

decide what to do with this scene or how
to resolve it.

Ah, an exterior shot of the girls' hut.
See the flower box?

Want to bet the next scene won't happen
inside the girls' hut?

Ta -da!

The Skipper and Gilligan's hut.

The studio must have insisted that most
everyday commercial items have their

labels covered so as not to give them
free advertising.

You'll see that later.

As for now, they blacked out the company
name of the radio as it appears on the

small label on the radio's lower right
side.

But the PB in the upper left corner of
the radio suggests it is made by Packard

Bell. In this shot, The light glances
off the blacked -out label at just the

right angle where it is almost legible.

One can almost see the name Packard
Bell.

As a storm whips the trees about, one
can see a pole with telephone wires.

For some reason, Mrs. Howell's hair is
only dyed blonde in front.

The hair on the back of her head is
black.

Say, look at that.

Exterior shot of the skipper in
Gilligan's hut.

Interior shot of the Howell's Hut. Well,
what do you know? I can't say I saw

that coming.

I don't know if Natalie Schaefer has her
original teeth or if she's wearing

dentures, but it's a shame they're all
yellowed. It really is too bad. For a

woman of 63, she still has a lovely
smile.

Maybe that's why the hair in front was
dyed blonde, to match her teeth. Oh,

okay, sorry, sorry.

Look closely the next time you see this
scene, and you can see that there is

someone in the washing machine that
periodically sloshes a wet rag over the

window in a circular motion.

As the robot dumps Gilligan into the
water, Gilligan, of course, starts

some bizarre -sounding cries and yelps.

This causes nearby Skipper and Mr.
Howell to ponder what is making that

Mr. Howell suggests that it might be the
mating cry of the red -crested

hickenlooper.

Now this is truly a bizarre coincidence,
and leave it to me to find it, but Bob

Denver didn't borrow his last name as
John Denver did.

Bob Denver is, in real life, the great
-great -grandson of James William

who was the territorial governor of
Kansas.

The city of Denver was named after him.

As I record this video, the current
governor of Colorado is John

Here we see a drawing of the lagoon,
which from the lagoon itself bends to

right if one wishes to exit it, but here
it empties into the ocean towards the

left.

Ginger is holding the three of clubs.

Is it just me, or is the three upside
down?

The professor begins his introduction of
the fabulous Mademoiselle Ginger who

can read the future.

Of course, he has planned this deception
with Ginger, but wouldn't you think

that the other castaways would wonder
why the professor is acting like he

actually believes in fortune -telling?

The seance table is covered with a green
blanket, and only the front part facing

us has no one sitting by it.

Yet, as the professor raises the table,
there is no green blanket draped over

the edge, and no one's legs under the
table or near him.

Remember the professor seeming to be
excited about Ginger's supernatural

and how I pointed out that the other
castaways should have found it odd that

professor is okay with Ginger's act?

In this scene, the skipper asks, Where's
the professor?

Gilligan answers, He thinks this stuff
is silly.

This constitutes a violation of a
character's personality that the

writer should have been aware of.

Mr. Howell needs to return to
civilization to stop an imposter who is

his money.

As his pontoon boat sinks, Mr.

Howell fires his flare gun.

But where did the flare come from?

After all, in the previous telephone
cable episode, Ginger is trying to get

info for the Ginger Grant story.

She asks the professor, and when the
ship sailed past, was that April or May?

The professor answers, April.

You mean when we tried to attract the
ship's attention and couldn't find our

and only signal flare.

Ginger then establishes that it was not
only missing, but it was indeed used up.

Oh boy, exterior Skipper and Gilligan
hut.

Interior Howell hut.

You know, I am really beginning to
believe they are doing this on purpose.

By the way, in this scene, Lovie tells
the Professor that Mr. Howell, who has

been panicked by the spending of the
imposter, really needs to see a

psychiatrist.

But in more than one episode, Lovie has
acted like a licensed psychiatrist, even

to the point of mixing up a sedative for
Gilligan.

Later, she's at it again when Gilligan
has the stone bowling ball stuck to his

hand in Season 3.

So, why not just give Thurston the
psychiatric help he needs without the

Professor?

Now this has got to prove that the
production people are trying to drive

audience crazy.

Here we have the typical exterior
Skipper and Gilligan hutshot.

Notice that from left to right there is
a chair, a rock, the door, and a big

clamshell.

Gilligan says he saw a ghost the
previous night, so he intends to prove

the Skipper.

When the skipper exits the hut, he falls
over Gilligan, but notice that there is

a chair where the clamshell should be,
and there is a barrel next to the door.

Gilligan can't sleep on a haunted
island, so the skipper gets out of bed

handle the problem.

His blanket bunches up in the middle of
the hammock.

Later, when the other castaways gather
in the hut and Gilligan says they only

have two hammocks, Mr. Howe grabs the
skipper's hammock, which now has the

blanket spread out evenly over it.

Skipper and Gilligan, pretending to be
ghosts, take off their hats and rest.

They see the real ghost and fall over.

In the meantime, the other castaways are
still haunting about.

Three on the left and three on the
right.

That makes six castaways roaming about,
none of which are wearing either the

Skipper or Gilligan's hat.

Add the Skipper and Gilligan and we have
eight castaways.

Maybe that mysterious eighth person on
the minnow actually died when the ship

was beached, and he finally got the
opportunity to participate in an

Skipper's got a stain on his shirt.

Now he doesn't.

In this episode, that stain comes and
goes all day.

Mr. Howell is drinking through a long
straw made of either bamboo shoots or

reeds, and it's finished off with a
striped paper straw.

Now I have to confess that this next
discovery was a little creepy on my

but this should prove once and for all
that I have tremendous powers of

observation and much too much time on my
hands.

Are you ready?

Natalie Schaefer's right eye doesn't
blink as fully as her left eye.

Well, let's get back to normal business.

And what could be more normal than
exterior Howell Hut, interior Skipper

Gilligan Hut?

In the episode about the lack of oranges
and vitamin C, we see another exterior

Howell Hut and an interior Skipper and
Gilligan Hut.

What a strange orange, you know, going
from evenly colored to spotted to evenly

colored again.

The Howells aren't married in this
episode, or at least they think they

and Ginger suggests that the skipper
could marry them.

The professor said it would be illegal
because the captain has no authority on

dry land.

Gilligan suggests building a raft and
pushing it out into the lagoon.

The professor says that as long as it is
at sea, I guess it is legal.

Well, no it's not.

The power that is quote -unquote vested
in a captain comes from the authority of

the ship's owners.

A privately owned vessel, like the
Minnow, or even a larger ship, size has

nothing to do with it, has no authority
to give.

Only captains of ships that are owned
and licensed by state or national

authorities have the authority vested in
them to perform legal marriages.

Well, anyway, Lovey insists on being
called Miss Wentworth until after the

ceremony.

Thurston says, you've been Mrs. Howell
longer than you've been Miss Wentworth.

If that is true, and the Howells have
been married for 20 years, then Lovey is

39 or younger.

But even if we are gallant about it and
accept Mrs.

Howell as being, say, only 50 years old,
then they would have to have been

married at least 26 years for Thurston's
remark to be true.

Mr. Howell has temporarily broken up
with Lovie, so he moves into the Skipper

and Gilligan's hut.

Mrs. Howell moves in with the girls.

Gilligan and Skipper are sleeping
outside.

Who's living in the Howell's hut?

To make it worse, when the Skipper says
he isn't moving from the spot he is on,

and this shot of the Howell's hut
appears, you can hear the Skipper say,

Gilligan, that is our hut, and I'm going
to find a way to get back into it, or

something like that.

The production crew has got to be
screwing up these hut shots

It just isn't possible that they have
all happened by accident.

But before the second season comes to a
close, we have yet another exterior

girls' hut shot followed by interior
professors' hut.

Gilligan is running the lightning rod to
the meteor.

Notice the old method of scratching the
frame's surface with a needle to produce

a jagged bolt.

I did this myself when I was a teenager
on some 8mm film I had shot.

Well, the second season ends with a bang
as the meteor blows up.

Notice that the ground light that
illuminated the meteor from the inside

still on.
