if the girls get fed up,

front wheels braking

just beginning to lock,

to stop before the rear
wheels do that

rear wheel is locked,

well then, of course, as soon
as you get into the corner

you immediately start
sliding around.

Whereas, when the
front brakes do that,

at least you can see the
puffs of smoke coming off them.

He's really got the new car
sorted out now

and is absolutely incredible,
to think he never sat in it

until yesterday when it
rained all day.

Having equalled the lap record
in this morning's practice,

Jackie Stewart is in
pole position so far

with one more session to
come tomorrow afternoon.

And pole position is
very important here.

It's not easy to pass around
Monte Carlo through the streets

and if you can get

I'll probably between times,

I'll do three things
in that section.

I will rest my neck
against the head rest

because the neck muscles get
terribly sore in Monte Carlo

because, in Monte Carlo,

you're starting
and stopping all the time.

You know, you're... you know,
you're going back and forward

and the corners are so abrupt

that your 'G' load on your neck.

Your neck muscles get
terribly sore because,

you see,
the way you lie in a car,

you know, to get down like this
and drive like that.

So, look at the strain up there.
You're driving like that.

- You touch the...

You're not touching
the headrest until,

you know, you need to rest,

and then,
you just rest your head back

and maybe give it a little flex.

Do that and deep breathe
at the same time.

You know, you really give
yourself a chance

to breathe properly.

Between the waterfront
and the tunnel,

I'll probably look
at the oil pressure,

the water temperature.

And when you're not doing that,
you don't do that every lap.

When you're not doing that,
you must try to remember...

I'll look at the profiles of
the tires in the mirrors,

have a look at the mirrors

because if you strain your
head a little bit to the side,

you can see how
flat the tire is.

Now, if you got a
puncture or anything,

the tire begins to go
into slight concave,

so therefore
you look in the mirror...

You know, if you feel the car
not responding properly,

the first thing I do
is look at each tire,

all four tires, to see if
there's any sign of a concave

on the tire

because these tires only,

they're only pressured
to 16 pounds.

A racing car is like a very,
very finely balanced sort of,

you know, knife edge.

You've got to keep it
up right all the time.

If it gets over this way,

you know,
you got to be able to recognize

that it's moving
in any direction at all.

I remember one year
in Monte Carlo,

I had a rubber goggle band
on my helmet,

you know, I was wearing
goggles in these days,

and it kept getting stuck
a little bit, just a little bit

so that my head couldn't
freely go like that.

You know,
when I went around corners

and occasionally,
this thing would stick.

You know, and the
whole car changed,

the whole characteristic
of the car changed.

It was like, uh,
a different car.

I thought the thing had become,
you know, a bastard.

You know, it just... you know,
I was going around the corner,

and all of a sudden,
my head would stick like that

and the car would go around.

I wasn't being able
to move with the car.

Look, Monte Carlo should be
driven smoothly and quietly.

In the Formula 3 race,
you'll see a group of young guys

who have never driven in
a close confines of a city,

you know, not a city, a town.

Around road courses.
You know

they have been used to airfields
and wide-open spaces

where if you go over
the white line

that marks the edge
of the track,

it means sweet Fanny Adam.

Here, you do it
and you hit a 6-inch curb,

you know,
and you break your wheel

or you'd bend your suspension.

You know, they feel a
claustrophobic effect

in their driving and they
don't drive very well.

You know... and then, you see the
young guy who's going to make it

and he comes in and he's
clean and he's not rushed.

When I watch you practicing,
you look the slowest, you know?

- I'm happy.
- Yeah.

- I'm happy.
- That's exactly...

I'm happy it looks like that.

Let's say this is
the corner, right?

Now, which way do
you want me to go?

Go this way, Roman.

All right.

From this moment, you start...

- Coming in.
- Coming in, right?

- Using the shortest
possible line.
- That's right.

You clip on apex

and right here,
you start accelerating, right?

Instead of coming in here
and getting the power on here,

you get the power on here.

You start to take
the load off the car.

Instead of braking harshly here,
you brake a little quietly,

nice and gentle,
just touch them,

you know, make them feel.

You know, don't... jab the brakes
because if you jab the brakes,

the suspension goes down,

the whole car
changes its character.

Be nice to it.
Touch the brakes,

allow the car
to stay as level as possible.

Mm.

And when you take
your foot off the brake,

don't do that.

Feed the brakes out

because that way,
the car comes up gently

to its proper ride height.

You know, to... to the way
it best is suited

for its road holding.

And when that happens,

then, you allow then
to go into the corner

with power on way back here.

And again, the power
doesn't go on like that.

The power goes on smoothly.

And this is where you see the
guys going round with

opposite lock on,
with their wheels spinning

and the whole scene
looking like, uh,

a disaster in the making.

- You know, every
corner is an adventure.
- Yeah.

Now, from Monte Carlo or
even any other racetrack,

that's not the answer.

So, when you get
the power on here,

feed it in nicely.

As you go around the corner
be more progressive,

bring in the power
stronger and stronger,

but again,
don't go way out here.

Don't get here

because again,
you've got the gutter

and then you've got the curb.

And you only need
to clip the curb

and you'd broken the wheel
or you punctured the tire.

There isn't a corner in
Monte Carlo that is taken

any different than that.

And if you do
these sorts of things,

you're doing it with gentleness,

you're being kind
to your motor car.

It's being kind to you.

You're great friends.
You're married.

You're having a
fantastic affair.

You know, everything is united.

You're not arguing with anyone.

You know, when you
change gear, the gear...

There's no rush to change gear.

You're usually a little gear
higher than anybody else.

So, therefore,
the car is more docile.

It's not as highly strung

because if you have the
car in second gear

instead of third gear,

you only have maybe a
thousand revs to work with

because before you
must change gear.

If you have it way
down the rev range,

you've got plenty of time
and you let it run up

and then you change gear.

That's the opposite of
what they were doing...

It's the... It's
the... I'm not sure.

I am not sure if the
very best drivers

all the way through
the life of racing

have not basically done
the same thing.

I don't think too many of them
have explained it

the way they want to explain it.

But I'm sure if you
spoke to Fangio,

he would tell you that the
smoothest and the quietest way,

the slowest way, around
Monte Carlo is the fastest way.

On a wet track I can't see much
chance of him being able to

improve substantially.

It's very slippery indeed.

I think this very attractive
and fast

and effective new surface

along the back of the fence,
along the harbor wall

is probably very dicey
on these sort of conditions,

well the Formula 3's
were all over the place.

So, we'll see what happens

but it's going to be
very difficult

for anybody to get up
into the middle 20's

which is where you've got to be

if you want to be
sure of a place

after the conditions

Grand Prix of Monaco.

A unique race
through the streets

of the town of Monte Carlo.

This afternoon's over-cast skies

may well be causing anxiety
to a number of people,

in particular the
world champion...

I think at Monte Carlo this year

I wanted to win more than I've
ever wanted to win a race

because of so many things
going on around me.

I really desperately
wanted to win it.

It was... I want it to be my race
because I put so much into it,

so much preparation into it.

I suppose I was more and more
and more intense in than I...

I would normally be.

There's a whole lot of people
watching me at Monte Carlo

hoping like hell I'd break down

because their guy,
they're willing him on.

And they think, hell,
I hope Stewart has trouble.

Maybe they don't
want to see me crash.

And if they do want to
see me having an incident,

I don't really think they want
to see anyone die because of it.

I think they want to
see... they want to see danger.

They want to see
violence in the way

that every time a
race car goes off the road

it's a tremendously
destructive thing.

I mean, it has such
volume of violence

that it would be difficult to
interpret in any other way.

Of course, the big problem today

for drivers and team managers

is what to do about tires.

It's a gamble as to what's
going to happen today.

It's overcast and cloudy.

Now, we're obviously having
a bad year in Monte Carlo

this year for weather

and anybody who makes the
wrong decision about tires

is going to be in trouble.

If they go for the slick,
quick, dry-weather tires

and it rains during the race,
they'll have to stop.

Anybody who opts perhaps if not
for the very wet weather tires

for the intermediates
might get by...

But I was more concerned
about the weather in Monte Carlo

than I suppose
I've been all year.

You know, I have done
my practice in the dry

and had got pole position.

In the rain,
we weren't competitive,

the car just wouldn't perform,

whereas in the dry
we had an advantage.

In Monte Carlo,
this year was different somehow,

I had, I don't know,
I was very tired,

I was very uptight
and I couldn't unwind.

I was much more alive to what
was going on around me

than I would be normally.

Normally, I'd just
forget everybody else,

I wouldn't want to talk to them.

I wouldn't want to
discuss anything with them.

Hi.

If it rains we have a big
problem, you know,

Even a little bit of rain.

Huh?

If it doesn't rain...

He says, if it rains,
it rains for all.

I know.

I know.

That's the trouble.

I'd like it to rain
for the others.

- Jackie.
- Sorry, I didn't get onto
the boat, but...

Look, after the race...

- Jackie.
- Yeah, If I can.

Hello. Thank you.

Jackie, after the race the
bunnies are all coming aboard,

- If you like it...
- OK. If I can I will.

OK, thank you.

I try to eliminate the
feeling of occasion normally

but in Monte Carlo,
I couldn't do it

- then I forgot a simple thing
- Where's my helmet bag?

Like putting on a second
layer of thermal underwear.

Now, because of the walk down,
I didn't want to dress fully,

so therefore I kept one
of my undershirts off

because I wear double layers.

You know, I forgot to put it on
and that's like...

It's like a man forgetting his
gun if he's going to shot.

You just don't do it and
it's something that I did.

Now, I was halfway along
to my race car

when I remember that I had
only one set of underwear on,

you know, vest on.

And I had to go back and do it
and that annoyed me.

That upset me.

That upset my balance,
my preparation

because I'm sort of plugged
into a countdown.

Personal countdown
prior to the race,

an emotional countdown
and that irritated me

and there was a photographer.

I gotta get the Goodyear
logo though.

Yeah I know,
well for Christ sake,

what do you want me to do,
give you a studio?

Literally, he wanted me
to pose, you know,

it's not my scene.

That's not what I'm there to
do and that irritates me.

That wouldn't
normally irritate me.

The drivers are all
being presented to the

Serene Highnesses Princess Grace
and Prince Rainier of Monaco,

being presented by the top of
the course Louis Chiron

on the starting grid.

Louis Chiron, of course at
the ripe old age of 72,

very excited to be starting
the race again this year.

He had given up doing it,

but this is the 40th year
anniversary

of his victory in this race
in 1931.

So it's being celebrated by
allowing Louis Chiron

to start the race once again
as clerk of the course.

So with Jackie Stewart
in pole position

and leading the world
championship by 15 points

to Mario Andretti's 9.

Mario Andretti not
having qualified

at all to start the race,

Stewart is in fact in
a very strong position

at the beginning of this event.

When I climb
into the racing car.

It's like a guy being
given an injection.

You know, all the pain
and everything disappears.

You've been given an anesthetic

and you lose all relation
to grief, to pain,

to emotion outside of
what you want to do

or what you want to get
out of that racing car.

And ever so often the anesthetic
wears off and there you see

the cold, hard, horrible world
that you're involved in.

You know, you see things
that you don't want to see,

so you really quickly want
to have another shot

to get back into the comfort and
the warmth of your own escape.

Beautiful start by Stewart,

making sure of a lead in the
early stages is what he wanted

because it's not easy to
pass on this circuit.

Up in the town
with Steward still leading.

And here they come out of the
tunnel into the chicane,

through the chicane and into the
back of it for the first time,

coming into our sight,
towards the end of the first lap

and it's Stewart.

Stewart leading with Siffert
second and Ickx for Ferrari.

Here's the end of the first lap,

up into..again
Stewart pulling away.

And a great fight going on for
fourth place between Rodriguez,

Peterson and Hulme.

And here they come out of the
Chicane for the second time

coming into the back
of Stewart still in front

being chased...

And there's something
gone wrong.

Hill has gone off.

Hill seems to have hit
the wall on the inside

and then bounced across
to the other side.

There's a lot of smoke
and jumping up and down,

but there's no fire,
he's not on fire.

Hill is out,
Graham Hill out safely.

Everybody getting really excited

but I'm afraid the car is
really badly damaged,

Graham Hill has won this
race five times before,

that's the end of this race
for Graham Hill

with a badly bent Brabham.

But the driver is alright.

Stewart still pulling away,

pulling away from the battle
for second place

between Cevert and Ickx.

Five laps gone and Stewart
is now three seconds ahead.

Jackie Stewart
who won this race in 1966

and the world championship
in 1969.

Now nicely in the lead in 1971,

in the race and the
championship.

And Cevert in the pits
already only after six laps.

It looks like a damage wheel;

he must have hit a
curb somewhere

which is always a hazard
here at Monaco.

Stewart getting further
and further ahead.

Stewart getting more
and more in front.

Thirteen laps and Ronnie
Peterson is in fourth place.

Peterson is past Rodriguez.
Rodriguez having...

Twenty laps gone and in the lead
number 11, Jackie Stewart.

Eight seconds ahead
of 14, Jo Siffert.

Third number 4, Jacky Ickx.

Number 5, Regazzoni in trouble
again with the Ferrari

and it looks like the
old Monaco bogey

of touching another
car or a barrier.

Two tires gone this time
on the one side.

Twenty-nine laps,
Stewart still in the lead

and Ronnie Peterson
in second place.

He must have passed Siffert
and Ickx both on the same lap.

Thirty laps gone

Stewart now 17 seconds
ahead of Peterson

and then Siffert,
Ickx and Hulme.

Now, as the race goes on
it must be getting

more and more tense
in the Tyrrell pit.

They don't want any pressure
during the closing laps.

Last year, Brabham found out

that it can go all wrong
right at the end.

Jochen Rindt passed him,
in fact,

on the last corner of
the last lap of the race

and Tyrrell doesn't want
anything like that happen

to Jackie Stewart.

Seventy-three laps,
7 left to go.

And it's clouding over
more and more

and if it rains now
everybody will be in bother.

This could give Peterson a
chance, you never know

and he has in fact gained
a couple of seconds.

Five laps to go and
it's beginning to drizzle.

The weather has
gone wrong at last

and this is very tricky for
everybody on worn, dry tires.

Stewart hanging on
and easing up a little bit,

trying to make sure of his
second win here in five years.

Even now this rain could
change the whole race.

Peterson is still gaining...

And the tension in
the Tyrrell pit

at this stage must be frantic

for Ken Tyrrell, Helen Stewart
and everybody else.

With so much hanging
on this race

and Jackie having
led for so long,

this rain must be
really frightening.

Here he comes,
the checkered flag ready

and Jackie wins the Monaco
Grand Prix for Ken Tyrrell.

This puts him well ahead
in the world championship;

Ronnie Peterson has driven
a magnificent race

into second place with
Jacky Ickx third,

Dennis Hulme fourth.

Jesus champagne, oh it nips.

It's cold?

No, I've got a blister.

Let me see it.
Let me see.

So, that's your blister.

Bravo! Bravo!

I never worked out why you
wanted to do this movie

in the first place, I mean...

Well, in those times I was
a great enthusiast

of motor racing.

I love motor racing.

You took me to see your testing,
whatever you were testing,

I don't remember,
tires, new engine.

And I wanted to do a
movie about a friend.

How do look at yourself
when you see this film?

- Well...
- I see myself silly, you know.

Me, I look at myself
and I think,

oh God, he needs a haircut.

And the sideburns...

Ah, the sideburns,
everybody was wearing sideburns.

Yeah, but the long... it seemed
that the longer the sideburn,

the faster you went

because Emerson Fittipaldi
used to say,

"If Jackie has got the
longer sideburns

I'm going to have
longer sideburns."

They seemed so silly and funny,
but everybody was wearing them

and they looked really good

and they were the symbol of
the period, those sideburns.

I mean, like,
when you look at that film

only some old cockers
like us now, don't wear them.

Yeah, I guess so.

Maybe we can't.

But it was a trendy time.

- It was a trendy time.
- Very trendy time.

But you know, I always remember
you as safety champion

and a lot of those
things happened

and were installed
thanks to you,

you were always
fighting for the red light

on the back of the car,
in the rain.

In the rain, yeah.

- You were fighting
for the barriers.
- Yeah.

I can't remember the
number of things

that you were really
fighting for.

Well, when we were racing
in that period,

if I had raced for
a five-year window,

let's say from '68 to '73,

there was only a one
out of three

that I was going survive,

two out of three
I was going to be killed.

A terrible batting average and
yet nothing was being done

by the governing body,
by the track owners,

by the officials.

It took an enormous
amount of pressure

with the drivers
coming behind me.

But the fatality rate,
Helen and I one night at home

counted 57 people,

enough that there
were friends or I raced with,

many of them acquaintances,

but some of our
very best friends

at least five of our best
friends were killed.

Yeah, I know.
I remember those times, yeah.

That changed, you know since
that happened Roman,

it's been 17 or 18 years

since a driver
was killed in Formula 1.

I mean, what a risk
management victory

into comparison to where it was.

I mean, when we become flippant,

we say that in the
'60s and the '70s,

motor racing is dangerous
and sex was safe.

- Yeah, that's right.
- Because the AIDS
hadn't arrived.

Each accident was usually
ending up with a bonfire,

you hardly see a
fire now anytime.

Lorenzo Bandini
died here in Monaco,

not far from downstairs
out of this window.

And they never got the fire out.

They tried to put
the extinguishers on,

Lorenzo never got
out of the car.

The fire just enveloped
everybody

and there was not
enough equipment,

not the right fluid in
the fire extinguishers

and not enough people
and the driver died.

Today, we don't get fires,

but it's because we've got
different fuel tanks,

we've got fuel tanks
that take combustion

and don't explode,

don't allow the vapor
to get out to ignite.

And now if there is a fire,
we've got the best

fire extinguishers in the
world to look after it.

And the best medical
people to give resuscitation.

Quite a few drivers over these
years have died in the car,

but been jumpstarted
with anaesthetist

by somebody who specializes

in bringing the heart
back to life

and these people are here today,

whereas in the past years
they were lost forever.

And the accidents are just
as spectacular,

even more spectacular than
they were in those times.

Sometimes you see things
that just blow your mind.

You think this is a
cinema special effect

and the guy gets out of it and
walks away from the car.

I mean, that's a
great victory too.

And someone like me watching it,

knowing the dynamics
of an accident.

When Kubica had his
accident in Canada,

I was watching...
I was there in Canada.

I was watching it and
I was watching it on the screen

as well as on the track
and I thought he's dead.

Nobody can survive
impacts like that.

The accident seemed
to go on for minutes.

He was carried out in a
stretcher but he was conscious

and he walked out of the
hospital next morning

from such debris
surrounding him.

And not too long ago,
I mean, just 12, 18 months ago,

Mark Weber
had an accident in Valencia.

He hit the back of another car

and he just went
right up into the air.

Certainly, certainly five, eight
meters in the air

and then came down upside
down with him in the car, bang.

And walk out of the...

And the car then righted itself
in short that maybe,

maybe a 130 miles an hour,

I thought,
"My God, he's got to be dead."

And moved out,
took of his seat belts,

got out of the car
and walked away.

I know.

Changed times.

They're great,
great, great change.

You were talking about
all those people that died

in those times.

I mean, the death of Francois
who was then racing with you,

shook me tremendously,

in fact, I'd lost completely
interest in the sport

because I knew him personally.

We are not friends like us,

- but I would often
ski with him,
- Yeah, yeah.

- Although he was forbidden to.
- Supposedly.

But we did it secretly.

And he was such a young,
promising, charming driver.

He was so glamorous.
He was so colorful.

He was so exciting.

He was so good-looking,

very... I mean, he was very
dangerous with the young ladies.

I mean, there was a lot
of damage done

and yet he such a basic man
and my role with him was like,

a student and a professor

because I was passing on
everything I knew to him

because I saw he had
enormous potential.

He had great natural skills.

He was a racing driver
that would, in my opinion,

unquestionably have gone on
to win the world championship.

And he's one of the
drivers who sadly,

violently lost his life.

It would have been my last
Grand Prix of my career,

it would have been my 100th
Grand Prix in Watkins Glen,

the race he had won
the previous year.

And we were able to win it
that weekend

because I had already secured
the world championship,

the car was great,

and then Saturday he just had
the most violent accident.

The debris around
the track Roman,

was just impossible
to drive through

and all of the drivers stopped

and I was one of the
last to arrive.

And we had three cars
in the race that year,

Chris Amon, a New Zealander,
was driving for Tyrrell

and I saw Chris because he was
walking back from Francois,

and I thought,
"Are you, OK?"

- I thought it was him.
- You thought it was him.

And he says, "No."

and then I knew it was Francois.

So, I get out my car and I go,
the barrier's destroyed

and Francois was still
in the car but...

I mean, what I saw that day,
in a way no man should see.

So, it would have been
my last Grand Prix.

We, in respect to Francois,
we withdraw.

I thought it would
have been crass.

- To drive...
- Drive and win another race.

One of my greatest regrets
is that I didn't stay longer.

He still had his helmet on.

In those days,
you had to go to the driver

because there weren't enough
people to look after them.

The medical facilities,
the marshaling was not

anything like it
should have been.

One of the race tracks,
Grand Prix race track,

the chief medical officer
was a gynecologist.

I mean, racing drivers
were amateur gynecologists,

but to have that specialization
as the chief medical officer

that was the bizarreness...

- Of this time.
- Of the time.

Today, a modern
Grand Prix driver

would not know how to deal

with the type of circumstances

that the drivers of my
era had to endure,

and looking after the
wives and the girlfriends,

and Helen would have to go
and pack the suitcase

of the close friend
who's no longer with us.

Even when Jochen died
at Monza in 1970,

25 or 30 minutes later,
I was back in the car

and you know when
the visor goes down

I think the lights go out.

And I did the fastest lap I've
ever done at Monza at that time.

And yet, I was in tears
before I get into the car

and I was in tears when
I got out of the car.

I was so affected
by what I had seen

and yet the racing driver,
the animal,

a very exceptional
person at that time

to accommodate the grief,
erase it...

From the time of the race.

And then come back to it
and see it

and still have to deal with
the family, the children

and the wife and the mother
and the father

and the brothers and the sisters

who were just in despair.

The sport was so violent
in those days.

Nothing compared with today.

Now, I would take the
opportunity to ask you,

how did you start
all that thing.

We never talk about it,
you never told me.

Because I left school
at 15 with no education,

I worked in a garage
and I became a mechanic.

And as a mechanic I was
preparing cars for customers.

And one of them was
a well-off customer,

but his family's trust
would not allow him to race.

So, he had other
people drive his cars,

but I was preparing the car,
I was the mechanic.

And as a little reward,

he gave me a chance to drive
in a very small event

in Scotland which I finished
second in the first race,

he said, you should do
the next one,

let's do the next one
and I won the next one.

- And that's how it all started.
- And it was like a rocket ship,

how life changed completely,

but, you know, your early life,

I think has a lot to do
with how you develop.

My early life
was such an aggravation,

such pain because
of my school problems.

When we did the movie,
I did not know I was dyslexic.

I was a disaster at school.

I was a complete failure.

I left school at 15
with no education.

My greatest loss.

I still can't read
or write correctly.

I can't do the alphabet.
I don't know the alphabet.

I don't know the words
of my national anthem.

I was faking any perceived
wisdom that I had

when we did that movie.

I was still feeling insecure

because I knew I wasn't as
clever as people thought I was.

I knew I could drive
racing cars.

I knew I could
communicate with people,

but I still couldn't read
and I still couldn't spell.

And all these years I thought
I was stupid and only...

You never told me that.

I'd be ashamed.

In those days I would
have been ashamed.

I couldn't have... you know,
Helen didn't know.

I couldn't tell Helen.
She did not know.

I faked it.

But when you were young,
when you started racing,

did you think I'm
going to kill them all?

- No.
- No?

I had no idea it was going to
turn out to be successful

as I turned out to be.

I mean, just in victories or
money or anything you want.

I never thought that I could
ever have reached that level

and I never thought that I
could keep it at that level.

And I always thought that other
people were clever or better

or more skilled
than me to do the job.

Yeah, I know.

But you know I just think
that all those things

must be really subjective.

I think that the way you feel,

when you talk about
driving in general.

You say it has to be smooth,
it has to, you know,

break gently,
lift the foot gently,

don't fight with the car.

But when I sit next to you
and you drive around the track,

you know, in the rain
as you drove me,

it all looked...

Where's the smoothness you
talked to me about, you know?

Yeah but that's different.

That's when you're
right over the limit

and you're trying to
bring the car back

from circumstances that
you may have hit aquaplaning,

you know, the water was too deep

and the car doesn't cut through
the water that goes over it.

When it's no longer in
contact with the...

- The surface...
- the surface,

you are out of control,

so you've got to
bring the car back.

The more I raced, the
longer I was in the business,

the more I could
exercise that desire.

You know, if you turn the
steering wheel in too fast

the car is nervous,
you upset the car.

So I learned that I could put
very little steering angle in,

in fact,
to get round in the corner

because you imagine you've
got to do a lot of that,

but in fact you don't.

And when you take the
steering angle off,

you can take it off earlier
than most people do

because the car
has now taken up,

it's set it's position
and in fact,

the steering wheel or the
steering angle is little to do

with that change of direction.

The dynamics of the car
of doing that.

As I developed, found
that I was more complete

in being able to interpret
before the car reacted

what his next movement
was likely to be

and eliminate that sudden
rush of activity

that you have to go
through at high speed

to bring the car back
under control.

So the object was,
at my last year of motor racing,

the car very seldom
ever get out of control

because it didn't need to be.

It could actually, I could
drive slower and go faster.

Yeah, I understand, but this
is a very subjective feeling

because you
several times told me,

you compared it to
the slow motion

when you're driving the car,

but when I sit next to you,

it doesn't feel like
slow motion,

but it's rather like
a silent movie, you know,

16 frames per second.

It's such a joy that we're able
to sit down here now

and look back.

- After all this time.
- Forty years.

But isn't it funny to
be in the same place,

the same suite?

The same suite, the same view.

They've changed the
furniture a little bit.

- Well, this has changed.
- Yeah.

- Look at the number...
- The yachts are bigger.

They're bigger,
there's more of them.

The harbor is bigger.

I mean, they put this out
to take cruise ships now

that come in.

See there, the big one
out there is Atlantis,

which was the Niarchos yacht,
still is the Niarchos yacht,

still there,

and of course the same size,

but then are bigger
ones than it now.

This was the Station
Hairpin in the old days.

Of course, now
this is the Fairmont Hotel

and they've even got a grand
stand right up on the roof.

This is exactly
the same as it was,

but the curbs are not sharp,

they're smooth now
you can go on them,

wherein the old days
they were completely sharp.

You know, very dangerous,
you would break a wheel.

And finally, after you've
come down the hill,

you head for the tunnel.

Much longer
than when I was in it.

My day, the tunnel
was much shorter.

The lights were hardly
any light in here at all.

That's why I had to wear
the orange lens

so we could get light.

You're going fast, you're going
from third gear to fourth gear

to fifth gear, to sixth gear,
to seventh gear through here.

At least 185 miles per hour.

Onto this piece of road
which we didn't use before.

The yachts on the
left-hand side,

they will be pushed back
so that if there is an accident,

a wheel comes off,

there's no risk of it
going onto the yachts.

A lot of people are sitting
and watching

the race from the yachts.

And maybe a few more pretty
girls like this on the day.

- Look at the size
of the grandstand.
- Yeah, look at that.

Wow.

All the way along here.

Full.
Never a seat empty.

This Roman, is where we
used to see the pits.

- Here. On this side, yeah.
- Yeah.

- Under those trees.
- Yeah.

And you and Helen,

was you're talking to her
underneath these trees

and the race track
had no barrier

between you and the race cars.

- Yeah, you could step
down to the race car.
- Yeah.

And all the fuel and everything
if anything had happened,

it would have been a disaster.
