And I arrived just in time

to see that horse Duke

strike Webb down.

Then he attacked me.

Duke never attacked anybody before.

anytime he gets a chance.

You can't trust him any longer.

There's only one thing to do
with a horse that's gone bad.

- How is he, doc?

- Is there any improvement, doctor?

- Well, this is the third
day he's been unconscious.

It's impossible to say how long,

but he'll come out of it alright.

- [Townsperson 1] First
time I ever heard 'em

holding court for a horse.

- [Townsperson 2] I never knew
they tried Duke for anything.

(townspeople chattering)

- Granddaddy, you're not

This horse, Duke, who everyone
here knows is an outlaw,

what all this ruckus is about.

every man and woman in
this town is in danger

as long as he remains alive.

- Sure made this horse out to
be a confirmed sinner, Henry.

And I'm afraid you're right.

Well, you've heard the case
for the prosecution, folks.

Anybody here gonna speak
on behalf of the horse?

- Uh, I'd like to say a word, Judge.

I realize that Duke is
a very spirited animal.

Maybe more so than is good for him.

But if you'll give him another chance,

I take the responsibility

of seeing that he don't run wild again.

I'd like to do what you
ask, but the evidence shows

that Duke is a dangerous
and vicious horse.

And I can't allow sentiment

to interfere with the safety

know Duke is no killer.

the finest men in town.

I am about to pass sentence in this case.

As the judgment to this court

that this Duke horse is a
menace to this community.

And whereas, no one has
been able to ride him

without risk to life and limb.

wantedly attacked two men

and shown the disposition of a killer.

The Sheriff is ordered to-

but I didn't figure I

from killing a good horse

just because he's a little spirited.

See, where I come from
we don't shoot horses

when they get honorary. We tame 'em.

Now, if you'll give me a chance-

(gavel banging)

that I'm conducting this trial.

From the Tumbling East, down in Texas.

- Well, Mr. Tumblin' East Drury,

we need men like you here in Catalog.

We'd like to have you attend
a meeting, this afternoon.

- Well if there's gonna be any
excitement, I'll be on hand.

excitement you're looking for,

because a meeting of the vigilantes.

If this Hawk was just a common bandit,

we'd had him rounded up long ago.

But he's quicker than greased lightning.

And crueler than a rattlesnake.

his time is coming next.

You all know we've sent out posses.

And tried in every conceivable
way to catch this fiend.

But in every instance, he's beaten us.

- You were hit pretty hard
yourself, last year, Gaunt,

when the Hawk raided your ranch.

The question is what are we going to do

to rid the country of this killer

and his gang for good and all?

- Our friend from Texas, down there,

seems to be pretty good at taming horses.

Maybe he could tell us
how to catch a Hawk.

- Well, this Hawk sure sounds

like a mighty tough hombre.

What does he look like?

- No one has ever seen him

except the scalps that do his dirty work.

- Why for years we've
tried to smoke him out.

And today he's stronger than he ever was.

- If you've got any ideas,
Drury, speak up. We need'em.

- Well, talking ain't my strong point,

especially where I'm a stranger.

But I'd say that trailing
the Hawk is a one man job.

- That's just what I have been
telling the folks around here

for the last few months.

- Oh, why didn't you do it?

no one to go with me.

(group laughing)

- I'm not belittling your idea, Drury.

But no one's hankering to
go after the Hawk alone.

If any of you here want to tackle the job,

now's the time to speak up.

would like to back up his own idea.

a lucky sort of a cusp

playing a lone hand.

If you folks say so, I'm
willing to take a chance.

- Son, you sure are a wonder
for pickin' tough ones.

But I have an idea if you
do meet up with this Hawk,

you'll know how to take care of yourself.

- Yes and being a stranger in this country

the Hawk won't know you.

That will be an advantage.

- Oh, some hombres have all the luck.

You took the job right out of my hands.

Drury being a stranger here

he'll need someone to lead him

out to the Hawk's stamping ground.

- Well, I-I'd just be
tickled pink, Mr. Gaunt.

Only, I couldn't let the
Sheriff run the town alone.

You see, I-I'm the only deputy he's got.

(group laughing)

- Well, somebody will have
to show Drury the way.

It's the least we can do for him.

- Nobody is more interested
in the capture of the Hawk

than I am.

I'll act as Drury's guide.

- I sure appreciate
your kindness, Mr. Sims.

- I'll meet you at dawn in Eagle's Pass.

If that's agreeable to you.

- I'll be on hand.

- Boys, the odds are heavy
enough against Drury,

any way you figure it.

If he's gonna have a chance to succeed,

we've got to keep quiet about
what's happened here today.

If it gets to the Hawk's ears,

the boy is as good as
dead before he starts.

(chairs rumbling)

We're to meet the sheriff and vigilantes
