(skateboard rattling) (suspenseful music)

(can cracking)

- Some friend you turned out to be.

(dramatic music)

I told you 40 years ago you wouldn't listen.

Now look what you're doing.

You didn't give me a chance.

You let the whole thing slide right down the damn toilet.

Now what do you got? Shit, you piece of shit.

You don't even know what's going on, do you?

What do you think I got?

(dramatic music) Not shit.

(beer splashing)

(can clanking) It's all piss anyway.

Crap. (dramatic music)

Back in those days,

I had some strange ways of taking care of the anger.

The name is Axel, Veteran Contra Drug Wars

Hundred and First Air Cavalry,

three years in Central American Jungles left me

without the use of my hips

and a nervous system ripped to shreds.

All I have is my deck and the clothes on my back.

Some people think my behavior is the result of the war

and a bad diet, but so what?

I am a successful mutation,

a product of my environment just like everybody else.

(wheels clattering) (drum rattling)

Surviving the war was one thing.

Surviving the place I lived in was another matter.

Five acres of shipping containers was the city's answer

to low income housing.

It was a brutal scene,

but it was better than sleeping under via docks,

The city called it a housing project.

We just called it the Gray Zone.

(drum rattling)

One thing about survival is that you need friends to do it.

I was fortunate to have some able bodied

that helped me get around.

There was Scratch an androgyne percussion expert

who was one of the toughest health food freaks I ever knew.

Scratch! Scratch!

Stop that Scratch.

If you're not part of the problem, you are the solution.

You jack off.

Cut that shit out. Cut it out.

Cut that shit out Scratch.

- Uh oh, you've been rolling around downtown again Axel,

sucking up nitrates and twitching.

Here. This will make you feel better.

(drums rattling)

- Goddamn vaporwave hell.

Those asses are dinner.

There was also young Razoreus,

an edgy kid full of deviant hormones

and like Scratch an expert shoplifter

and all purpose vandal.

We all lived there.

Zoners in the gray zone. (drums rattling)

(rock music) (stick rattling)

(rock music continues)

(rock music continues)

But one guy we'll never forget is Orpheus.

Everybody liked him in the Zone.

He had a band called The Shredders

and we would go see him at the Thrash Bin Club

every chance we could.

Not having money didn't stop us,

we would always find a way to rock like rabid dogs.

(crowd cheering)

- Okay, one more and we gotta go.

(crowd cheering)

Can we have the projection please?

Okay there's an old saying, nobody loves me.

Everybody hates me.

Guess I'll go eat worms. (crowd cheering)

- Good evening ladies and gentlemen,

and welcome to the world of the sedate,

where the subliminal meet the sublime.

Sit back, relax,

and let the cathode ray fill your soul

as we share together the ministry of somnolence.

- Praise the ray.

- [Hades] Let yourself be comfortable.

Give yourself to the ray.

The ray is so comforting, so soothing.

Lets yourself absorb the ray into every pore of your body.

- The light from the ray is the beautiful mystery of waves

and particles and particles

and waves becoming waves of parts and parts of waves,

blending into little wave-icles of lightning bugs

washing over you and cleansing and healing you.

As you breathe in,

observe the teeny weeny bits of microwave radiation

(door creaking)

- [Intercom] Oh shit.

(door creaking)

(Orpheus gasping) (guard snarling)

(guitar strumming)

- Whoa.

(guard groaning) (music throbbing)

(guard laughing)

(rock music continues)

(dial clicking)

(unsettling music)

(peaceful music)

- There is something seriously lacking here don't you think?

- [Producer] Mhm.

- We're just not getting the performance

we need from this woman. - Mhm.

- I think we have to get that musician back.

- Mhm.

- There's got to be a way.

- [Producer] Hm.

I've got just the thing. (peaceful music continues)

(producer blowing) (unsettling music)

(Orpheus gasping) (rock music)

(objects clattering)

- Man, hey man, Fred, come on,

We're talking to someone with major Marky value.

The guy is cult legend around here.

Truck him in from suburbia, Man, Fred, don't think small.

We're gonna get kiss, kiss, kiss coverage,

print, radio, television.

Let's go for the tri-state area,

All right and, and, and, and Manny,

let's not let a few percentage points get in the way okay?

I mean, Manny, we both got overhead, right?

Hold on a second. What is it?

- It's the production manager from that dance company

on the other line.

Orpheus hasn't shown up for rehearsal yet,

and they've been waiting outside the Showbox

for over an hour.

They're really pissed off and want to talk to you.

- Shit.

Tell 'em I'm right there.

Manny look, I got a little forest fire here.

Let me lemme call you back, okay?

Hello? Yeah.

Yeah.

I, I, I, I know I'm, I'm real sorry about that.

Look, I, I know he's a little moody.

Alright? Alright.

But his stuff is perfect for your show.

Just, just give,

gimme a half an hour to get 'em there okay?

All right. Bye. (phone dinging)

I'm out.

(Linus knocking) Orpheus.

- Screw off. - No way, babe.

(metal clattering)

So you've been doing some redecorating?

- Yeah.

- You're an absolute mess,

When are you gonna stop living in the past, my friend?

You gotta move on.

- Where do you want me to go?

- First to rehearsal, I'm tired of covering your ass,

I treat you like a brother

and all I get in return is bullshit.

It's all bullshit to me, man.

I don't know who I am. - Then get some help.

Look, there's an oracle coming in

on the next tangent shipment tomorrow evening.

Counseling, channeling,

neuro-linguistic programming, video tarot, she's hot.

See her.

- Maybe. - Do it.

Let's go.

(dramatic music)

(container thudding)

(truck beeping)

(Orpheus knocking)

(door clanging)

(electronics whirring)

- Put your hands on the screen.

- [Oracle] The lovers, tower.

Hanged man. - Hm, hm.

All right.

Don't force this one babe. The price is too high.

You've got an itch you wanna scratch,

but this little lady's in the rear view mirror.

Don't turn your back on the rest of your life.

- Life? I don't have a life unless I get her back.

I don't have a choice. - Listen, boo boo,

you're lucky you made it back the first time.

If you wanna join the pantheon

of dead skate rock guitar heroes, that's your choice.

- Look, just tell me whatever it is I need to do.

- Okay you might get what you want,

but it won't be what you expect.

Go to the river, wait for the smoke

and whatever it is you need will be there.

And if you're gonna go, go now.

(thunder cracking) (board roaring)

(rock music)

(rock music continues)

(board rattling)

(rock music continues)

(rock music continues) (pipe clanging)

(board clacking)

- Hey, what's up?

What happened to your place?

- Just doing a little remodeling.

- You are weird,

Hey, this stick looks pretty rad.

Where'd you find it?

- Don't touch it.

I didn't find it. It found me.

- Well, hey, if you're hungry

check out what I scored dumpster diving.

Pepperoni pizza. Olives and mustard.

- I gotta go.

- Oh, come on.

Let's do lunch.

- Okay, let's do lunch.

- Where are you going?

Where are you going?

You're gonna try that garage, aren't you?

- Let's just say I got a new deck and yeah,

I'm gonna try that garage,

- Try it my ass.

How many times have Axel and Scratch said not-

- [Orpheus] I know what they said it.

It's dicey.

- Dicey?

That sounds like a meat grinder to me.

- Look, I've got the deck.

I've got a chance.

I've gotta take it.

- That's totally mental.

- True.

- Well, don't blow it okay?

- Okay.

Why don't you stay around and crash.

I'll be back in a couple hours.

- Mental.

(dramatic music)

(door creaking)

- Right this way, sir.

Going up to go down, sir.

Have a nice trip sir. (somber music)

(board clacking)

(upbeat rock music)

(upbeat rock music continues)

(air whooshing)

(board clacking) (upbeat rock music continues)

(door thudding)

- Five minutes.

- Now what, did they decide they needed an encore?

- No, new routine.

Remember him? (upbeat rock music)

- Orpheus?

(music intensifies)

- What's going on?

- Looks like you and the old flame

are getting back together again.

He just won't burn out.

- You're not gonna stop him?

- We tried. He's too smart.

- Stop him. - Too late.

- Stop him. - Chill out.

You get to be queen for a day.

In four and a half minutes.

(door slamming)

(upbeat rock music)

(dramatic music)

(lighter clicking) (lighter clacking)

- Well Orpheus.

Welcome back.

So you wish a try for Eurydice again?

- That's right Hades.

- All right Orpheus, then let's begin

the Eurydice Door Show.

(Hades laughs)

(dial clicks) (unsettling music)

- [Announcer] We interrupt our regularly scheduled program

to bring you this special EBN report.

We go now live to the Eurydice Door Show

already in progress. (dramatic music)

- Here is the deal.

Persephone is standing in front of two sliding door,

door number one and door number two.

Behind one of these door is Eurydice.

Behind the other one is your death.

All you have to do is choose. (laughs)

You still wish to play?

- Yeah. - No!

(door thudding)

I'm supposed to be behind the door.

- Okay Orpheus, it's time to decide, which will it be?

Door number one or door number two?

Door number one or door number two.

(crowd chattering) (dramatic music)

- One. (groan groaning)

- All right, all right,

we have a decision, door number one.

(suspenseful music)

(door whirring)

(crowd cheering) (dramatic music continues)

(chainsaw revving) (intense music)

(guitar distorting)

(dramatic music) (door thudding)

(crowd cheering) (chainsaw revving)

(intense music)

- No! (glass shattering)

(crowd cheering)

(intense music continues)

(guitar clanging)

- You're on.

(somber music)

- Orpheus, it's time to leave your body now.

(somber music continues)

Orpheus. (somber music continues)

- Well, well what do you know.

Together at last. (somber music continues)

(somber music continues)

(somber music continues) (unsettling rumbling)

(somber music continues)

(wheels rattling)

(suspenseful music)

- Oh no.

(water splashing)

(board rattling softly)

(dramatic music) (door clanging)

(door creaking)

- Going up to go down sir.

- No way.

(guard snarling in foreign language)

(device humming)

Hey, what's going on?

(board whooshing)

(rock music)

- [Axel] After Razoreus tried the Euthanasia Garage,

it was clear that there wasn't really

anything we could do for Orpheus.

I also figured that the network was going to catch up

with all of us sooner or later.

But in the meantime,

I figured we could have a ripping rad time

thrashing the network signal.

(upbeat rock music)

(explosion booming)

(upbeat rock music continues) (metal clanging)

(fire crackling)

Razoreus and Scratch wanted to keep Orpheus's skull

and at first it would bother me

when they would do these little rituals,

but I remember during the war,

I ran across a tribe in the jungle

that kept the skulls of their ancestors around

to protect them

in the belief that they would retain

the wisdom of their forebears.

And what the hell, for these guys, anything that anchors

a little meaning in their life couldn't hurt,

Right now these guys think Orpheus was cool

because he played on a PTR show

and skated the Euthanasia Garage,

but maybe someday they will understand why he did it.

(upbeat rock music)

It reminds me of the time before the war.

She was really beautiful.

(upbeat rock music continues)

Shred it, yeah!

(upbeat rock music continues)

(upbeat rock music continues)

Go on, yeah.

(upbeat rock music continues)

Remember Orpheus.

Yeah!

(upbeat rock music continues)

(upbeat rock music continues)

(upbeat rock music continues)

(upbeat rock music continues)

(upbeat rock music continues)
