picking Laura.

[narrator] And Matt sent Jermaine back to Cheeny and Patrick,

further fueling their camp's internal conflict.

I would say, if we put them three together,

one of them's tapping out because they don't want to be here.

[Jermaine] Again, I'm gonna be on a team with Patrick.

I don't deal with bull [bleep],

and there's a lot of bull [bleep] in this camp.

This is a stressful situation.

Oh, my God, Jermaine's on his way here.

I didn't expect this.

I guess the other teams

Kind of dreading the same old headaches in camp.

So where's the other people?

- Trish and... - Trish is with Matt.

- [Cheeny] Okay. - And...

And Laura's with Max.

[Cheeny] Our camp has been together since day one.

Nobody else here can say that.

And, you know, I'm sorry that some people

are probably not too happy you're not getting along,

but this is hard.

Suck it up, buttercup,

because to be the last one standing,

your camp needs to be strong.

And we were thinking we were gonna get Trish.

We figured you would get picked first,

then Laura.

Yeah, it kind of was a drop-off.

It was like, "You're there." We just kept walking.

Wait. They didn't choose?

We were just like, "Laura, you're here.

It's your people."

- And then... Trish is with Matt. - Trish is with Matt.

- Okay. - Yeah.

[Patrick] Jermaine told us that nobody chose anybody...

uh, after the competition,

that they were just put in camps.

We know he's lying to us.

Jermaine's ego has already been hit.

He's lost the shelter building competition,

and now he's the last kid at dodgeball to get picked.

I can see the doubt in his eyes.

So I'm gonna slowly fill his mind with doubt,

and these mind games are gonna chip away at him

and he's gonna take himself out of this competition.

[Cheeny] I think this is our fate.

This is the universe trying to tell us something.

Yeah.

[Matt] You were surprised we picked you?

[Trish] Yeah, I was.

[laughs] I absolutely was. But, uh--

We figured you'd be a lot easier to get along with.

[Trish] I know Jermaine did not want

to go back with Tricky and Cheeny,

his original camp.

That also crossed our mind.

- [Darrin] Yup. - Yeah.

[Trish] Patrick, he's here to play the game.

He's a trickster. That's why I named him Tricky.

But it makes you a target,

and, uh...

I think it's totally turned around on Patrick.

- You guys are devious. - [Matt] And we figured--

- Yeah. - [laughing]

You chess-playing mother [bleep].

If there's a rift, we might as well

let that rift keep jacking-- you know, keep going.

Patrick's karma kind of came around,

and Jermaine is left to drive Patrick wild.

[Trish] That's a little powder keg over there, simmering.

And now it just got re-simmered.

[Matt] They were super-excited to get a refresh,

and, uh, we're putting them in deja vu.

Darrin, did we just play the game a little bit?

Dude, you guys just mental-chessed the [bleep] out of Last One Standing.

[laughs] And I'm so glad I'm here for it.

[all laughing]

- [Patrick] We're gonna be hungry. - [Cheeny] Yup.

We got a bow, but we have no fishing asset.

So our food options are pretty limited.

- Yeah. - [Patrick] It does suck

'cause we had the best assets in the game.

We had fishing, hunting, and hides.

Just gonna have to steal a hook.

[Cheeny] Meh. Stealing's your game, Tricky.

- I know. - That sounds like fun.

[Patrick] Yeah.

[Jermaine] But the thing is, we know there's animals here.

[Cheeny] Yeah. Wish we had a fishing kit.

But we have a boat.

And I would really love an opportunity for the next hunt.

Well...

Yeah, that'd be sweet.

[Jermaine speaking]

[Patrick] I'm just trying to give you some advice.

[Jermaine] Well, if I see pigs, I'm shooting.

[Cheeny] Patrick and Jermaine,

sometimes the guys will kind of bicker back and forth,

and I have to step in and be Mom and break 'em up.

I've been taking all of the negative stuff in stride,

but, mentally, it is a drain.

[Patrick] Dude, seriously, get some shots in,

just to practice.

[Cheeny groans]

[Matt] Every day we're out here surviving,

we lose weight, we lose calories,

we're losing muscle.

Let's do a little bit of target practice.

To get a pig out here is absolutely incredibly huge.

You could eat 100 fish,

and it will never be the same

as sitting there, gorge-feeding yourself

on a nice fresh pig kill.

It has salt. It has protein.

It's going to be those calories we need

to replenish what we've lost.

The vitals of a pig, about that big.

Out here, practice is crucial.

Practice is essential.

It's not an option.

It's mandatory.

You know, sometime around maybe day 8,

I had missed a pig.

[pig squeals]

[Matt whispering]

It's in here.

I know it's in here somewhere.

[sighs]

It was disheartening.

But, as my dad would say,

you got to shake it off and walk it out.

You have to practice every single day

to really hone those skills in properly.

Dead pig.

To respect the animal's life,

you must become super proficient with your weapon.

And you always got to prepare for those unexpected shots. It's hard to do.

It takes a little core strength.

But doable.

Every day, I'm strategizing what's going to make it

for the next 27 days.

I'm gonna have to be the fastest.

I'm gonna have to be the most precise.

So when the hunt comes,

I'll be ready.

That's a dead pig all day right there.

[Jermaine] We have not eaten a big protein score.

So every hunt we go on,

the stakes are incredibly high.

We've got to eat. We need protein ASAP.

[animal sounds in distance]

[Cheeny whispers] Right here.

Jermaine and I decided to check out a new area

to go out on this hunt.

I am new to bow hunting.

Even though I do shoot a lot back home

and I've been practicing out here,

Patrick's been hunting a bunch,

but Jermaine has the most experience.

I don't care about the glory.

I care about eating.

So I tell Jermaine, "You are shooting first.

I will shoot second."

[Jermaine whispering]

[Cheeny whispering]

[exhales slowly]

[Jermaine whispering] It was a good shot.

It was an inch below.

It was so close, man.

[Cheeny] To miss always sucks,

but our goal is a pig.

Jeez, they're just tastier.

We need something with fat on it.

[Max] I think it's gonna be a hot one today.

[Kaiela] Mmm-hmm.

[Max] Maybe have a little roof

and some shade over the top of us.

I think I'm gonna do a little cabana style...

- [Laura] Yeah, do it! - ...situation.

[Max] I'm gonna use all of the paper bark

from the last challenge.

Maybe try to, like, build a little lean-to,

instead of the Aboriginal dome.

[Laura] This is looking bangin'.

That's awesome.

[Max] It's a lot of energy to put out in these challenges,

and it's been so hot out here.

Laura, her neck got injured.

She's not the same Laura,

and I got to make sure that she's strong

because she's an asset, not a liability.

Making it a home.

Making it homey.

[Max] Now it's time to start thinking about hunting.

- We need to have bacon. - [Kaiela] I know.

[Max] I've taken several animals with bows,

so I feel pretty comfortable

when it comes down to getting the shot.

Yeah.

[Max] Fish are constant.

That should be your staple.

But the pigs are extraordinary.

Hopefully, I can get out and get on a hunt tomorrow.

[Jermaine] So I hand the bow to Cheeny.

It's her turn to lead.

We missed, by a hair, a deer and a hog.

To go after an animal, walking for miles,

you know, that sucks.

To score an animal would ensure

that we had enough protein to have energy

for any challenge that's coming up.

But we're walking away with nothing,

and all that weighs on somebody like me.

It put me in a weird mind space.

[Patrick] Mmm. Looks like they got nothing.

[Cheeny] Hey, Patrick.

She almost got one.

[Cheeny] Almost.

Found some scapulas.

- [Patrick] Nice. - So...

[Jermaine] We shot at the fawn...

- Shot at a pig. - Shot at a pig.

- Chased some piglets. - Chased some piglets.

[Cheeny] The bow's been in plenty of hands,

and nobody's come up with anything yet.

So it just goes to show how difficult it is out here.

Well, you took a shot at a small--

- [Jermaine] At a fawn. - At a fawn.

[Cheeny] Just under him.

- [Jermaine] Yeah. Just. Like that. - Yeah.

[Patrick] That's why I was trying to get you to practice.

I know, from last year...

- It's cursed. - ...Link and Jeff were saying

that to get, like, the shot,

you have to like practice a lot.

I was like literally...

it tickled the belly.

I'm getting really frustrated with Jermaine right now

because he's not listening to a word I say.

Jermaine won't even target practice with the bow,

but insists that he's the best archer here.

It's weird. It's like they lose their energy.

- [Patrick] That's what I was trying... - 'Cause it's so--

...to warn you guys about. Yeah.

[Jermaine speaking]

That's his strategy to take people out of the game, is...

annoy them, frustrate them.

Uh, because it's really...

the strategy is not based in actually skill.

Uh, he knows that the other competitors

are more skilled than him.

I need a nap 'cause I'm blown-out.

[Trish] Oh, God.

I think everybody now knows

that Tricky is here to play as shady as possible.

[Patrick] If you guys want, we can like leave a, uh...

- [Matt] Nope. Nada. - ...fishin' line there.

- [Trish] No. You want us to? Okay. - You know, and then I'll...

I'll give you guys a fish every time I catch two.

[Trish] Oh, that's great.

[Trish] How'd Jermaine do on his hunt?

He missed like three shots

[Matt] Jermaine should have been practicing with the bow a little bit.

'Cause he's like, "I missed the deer by that much."

If you miss by that much,

you would have missed the kill zone

- by... and it would have hit the deer... - By that much.

...somewhere in its body.

And then they chased piglets around everywhere, and...

[Patrick] They lost those, too.

[Trish] What the heck?

[Darrin] That's why we picked Trish.

[Matt] Picking Trish over Jermaine was a tactical decision.

And that strategy is working.

Some people's clock's ticking.

[Trish] Which direction is the clock?

The clock is sending a mother [bleep] home.

[Matt laughs] Yeah.

[Max] Kaiela's already got a little bit of skin and bones on her.

And Laura, her neck is messed up.

But you want to make sure you take care of your assets,

so today I'm going hunting.

I've proven myself to be a hunter.

[whispering] Warthog.

Got him.

So, hopefully, we can get a pig...

If you can get a pig on the spit,

you're winning.

[Matt whispering]

It's getting complicated.

This is a small area,

and we have three people with a bow.

And when you compete for hunting grounds,

it often messes up everybody.

Having people walking through the hunting ground,

spooking stuff, getting in the way.

If we, all three, are trying to hunt this very small area,

most likely, nobody will get a shot.

Competing to feast on pig.

[Max whispering]

This is a real-deal hunting and survival situation.

And I know Matt is a sharpshooter,

but I'm not too bad myself.

I want to prove that I can still hunt,

and I can still do all those things that I did in Africa.

I just nailed an impala.

Oh, my God.

It's a battle and it's a challenge

to see who can be the first one to get a pig.

[Max] If he takes the shot,

will they split the pig with us?

Will we split the pig with him if I take the shot?

I didn't come all the way to Australia to lose.

Here, you can't share $100,000.

If Max gets a pig,

I don't know that he would share it with everybody.

I came here to win.

I came here to be the last one standing.

[squealing]

And I should have known at the bottom of that tree

is just the smallest little root.

The [bleep] bow then hits the root,

threw my shot low and left.

And no bacon on the end of that arrow.

No one to blame on that shot but myself.

I had a clean shot, too,

but I let Matt take the shot.

He missed, unfortunately, and I'm thinking in my head,

"Oh, I should have done that. I should've done that."

That's kind of how it goes.

Looks like I'm starving tonight.

So that kind of puts me in a tough spot.

I'm gonna start in the middle,

just stand on this delta and...

Maybe I'll walk this way, actually.

It looks like easier walking to go further.

Kaiela and I decided we're gonna go fishing.

They had some luck with this fishing hole yesterday,

so I'm going to hopefully catch

and pay back some of the fish they gave me last night

when I showed up to camp.

Oh, God, I could just sit up on that big tree.

I have to let my neck heal right now.

I'm really disappointed that I can't go 100%.

I don't care how many days surviving out here,

nobody's safe.

Even legends can go home at any time.

[Kaiela] Do you have any luck down there?

[Laura] I just think it's like kind of shallow

for them to be biting this time of day.

[Kaiela] Yeah.

I mean, we were fishing about this time of day yesterday,

but I also think it might be a little bit hotter.

And then, also,

they just seem to, like, not bite two days in a row.

Yeah.

Come on, big fellas.

[Kaiela] That shelter building challenge was extremely brutal,

and, uh, I would love to have a couple of days to recover,

but, you know, it's not just losing a challenge

that can take you out out here.

It's the fatigue.

It's the not taking in enough calories.

I have a really fast metabolism.

I have to eat a lot

to maintain the weight that I am.

And it's gonna get harder and harder

as things move along.

Yeah, I mean, there's tons of little fish milling about.

[Kaiela] I'm getting bites,

but they're all just a little bit too small.

[Matt] This morning,

I actually saw the pigs go to bed.

And what that means is,

I saw them leave the meadow first light

and go into a certain parts of the trees.

So I feel like I tucked them in.

I let them sit in there and feel comfortable.

And I'm hoping those pigs come out

and they walk right back out

where I saw them go in this morning.

All right, so what I'm gonna do is

I'm gonna grab a branch off of this fig tree.

These figs are not ripe,

but these pigs are gonna stop and see if they're ripe.

If I can get them to stop, I'll get a shot.

I'm setting up a small blind right below this big rock.

All right. So, right now...

right now I'm sitting in this little blind,

and I've been here for about an hour, hour and a half.

It is a, uh...

Eerie quiet.

Being patient.

Can't move. Can't really do anything...

but wait.

[pig grunting]

[Matt] [bleep] yeah! Got him! [bleep] yeah!

Hoo! Pig down, baby. Pig down.

That was the perfect shot.

I think it went clear through. It looked like a hard shot.

I know, right now, this pig is somewhere.

An injured boar can not only kill you,

it could kill multiple people.

I need to make sure I get him before he gets me.

I have taken more big game than anyone,

but, I'll tell you, this one means some of the most to me.

Yeah, so, I'm out here to be the last one standing.

And I wasn't about to be the last one standing

without doing what I do,

and that's savagery.

That wasn't a sound of fear.

That was the sound of joy.

Tomorrow's a possible day of competition.

It obviously would be easier to starve 'em out.

But at the same time, if I'm gonna feed 'em,

that also frightens them.

They know "If Matt's feeding us,

you know, how much stronger does he think he is?"

Each strategy has their own advantage,

so I do have to make some tactical decisions.

[Darrin] Oh, Mr. Matt Wright, what did you get us?

[Darrin laughing heartily]

[Matt] This is for all of us, guys.

[Cheeny] Oh, man!

I mean, I haven't eaten in three days.

At this point, I'm feeling pretty tired,

and in my mind, I'm like,

"Why would you feed your competition?"

I think Matt must be feeling really confident, there.

And, you know,

it just goes to show how good of a guy Matt is.

Competition or not, he's a provider.

Matt has proved once again he's the best hunter.

[Matt] You need to intimidate your enemy a bit.

Make them feel like you're unstoppable,

and they might start to believe it.

Today, naked people will not be hungry.

[Patrick] If people are going to feed me,

I'll let them feed me.

And I can use this to my advantage.

So I'm gonna be having

a Patrick-sized portion of this pig.

[Trish exclaiming] Whoo-hoo-hoo!

[squealing]

Even though Matt's the one who brought home the bacon,

I'm proud to be part of this group,

and I think that it's showing

a lot of integrity between the three of us.

Once it's dark, I'm going to have a hell of a time

trying to process it.

So I need these other camps to help.

We got work to do.

[Darrin] There's no division right now.

We all know task at hand.

There's meat coming off this pig

as fast as possible.

This is a pig for everybody,

and everybody's willing to put in the work

to get it done.

[Trish] Sure did.

[Darrin] Good butchery knives would make this

so much easier.

[Matt] I know.

[Cheeny] We're carving up the pig right now.

We got the bonfire ripping.

We're eating tonight.

[Matt] Here we go. We got the first bite

of my outback pig.

We're all going to take a bite of the heart.

- Ah. - [people cheering]

[Cheeny] All of us have just been living

on miniscule amounts of fish.

I'm gonna have fat

for the first time in two weeks

just dripping down my chin.

Shoot, I'd even eat his testicles right now.

That's how hungry I am.

[Darrin speaking]

[Darrin] We're having some Australian mountain oysters.

because of Matt.

I don't know if it's the best strategy.

I'm dumbfounded,

because that puts me in a strong position to contend

moving forward.

I wonder what's going to happen today.

[Trish] Being in a camp with Matt,

I'm definitely going to have an advantage.

Because even though Matt was gracious enough

to take his huge pig kill

and to share it with everybody,

we still have so much meat.

And now we're on top.

It's that extra little push for the next competition.

We have a lot to do.

We had to process that pig in the middle of the night.

Right now, Darrin's cutting off the hooves.

We're flipping those...

flipping those hind legs into roasts.

[Darrin] Should we strip that rib cage,

get it in the pot?

- [Matt] Yeah, let's strip that as fast as we can. - [Trish] Yeah.

And as that dry crust happens, now no flies can lay eggs.

[Matt] You know, it really is a special feeling

when you don't have to worry about your next meal.

Meat-rich is a real thing,

'cause you feel right now

- as if we literally hit the jackpot. - Yep.

[Darrin] Uh-oh. Here we go.

We had a feeling something was going to happen today.

[Patrick] I think I'm going to get some shots in

with my bow right now,

just to practice.

Guys, we got a scroll

Patrick and Jermaine,

they're not getting along,

and my biggest fear moving forward is

an elimination challenge.

You know, we're a three-legged chair,

basically.

We need all three legs to be strong.

Otherwise, it's gonna fall over.

And if we go to an elimination challenge,

there might not be a future for me.

this was an elimination competition.

because my team isn't strong.

each camp may craft a maximum of six primitive axes

using any natural resources available to them

in the Australian outback.

Constructing bushcraft tools

using natural resources

is a key survival skill.

Added a barb and a spear point.

[Darrin] Two-day challenge.

- Let's make it happen. - Let's get this done.

[Laura] Primitive tools is

actually one of the very first things I ever did.

[Max] No way.

Using primitive tools, it's...

It's a pretty amazing thing.

It's only been a few days,

but we haven't had

success in this camp.

So this could be actually a real benefit for us.

I know this is something that I've done,

and I feel like

I can do a really good job at.

I'm super stoked about this, actually.

- Hell, yeah. - Yeah.

- This is going to be so much fun. - Yeah.

- Kicking axe and taking names. - [Laura] Whoa!

- Let's go! - Let's go.

- [Max grunts] - Come on, team.

[Laura] We have no idea

whether this is an elimination challenge,

but I am treating every challenge out here

as if it's an elimination challenge.

[Max] We got some work to do today.

[Patrick] They gave us rope this time.

[Cheeny] Mm-hmm.

- We can bind whatever it is to... - [Patrick] Mm-hmm.

If we can find some of that really dense wood

for the handle.

- So I tried that last year... - [Jermaine] Yeah.

...and it wasn't as good.

In this challenge last year,

my team came in third

and almost went to elimination.

Ah, goddamn.

I learned

the handle and being able to secure this axe-head

is probably the most important part

of building one of these axes.

I learned a lot by seeing Darrin's axes.

Plus, Darrin was in my camp afterwards,

so I learned even more from him.

Now, I kind of feel like an expert,

similar to Darrin.

Just having done this challenge,

I know exactly what I'm going to do.

Let's get working.

[Jermaine] Patrick has done this event,

but we're in a different country.

It's a different tree that we're chopping down,

and it's a different rock that we're using.

I appreciate the fact that he did it last year,

but I'm sure there's more than one way to skin a cat.

We don't want to all go in there with six axes

that all look the same.

If there was a fail point on one,

it could be a fail point on all of them.

I think this is a blue gum.

It's really the closest thing I found here to oak.

I think it'll be a good handle.

I do bushcraft stuff,

but I don't craft axes.

[grunts]

However, axes work

on a fulcrum, right?

So it starts from a handle.

Handle needs to be strong.

The blade needs to be sharp.

We're going to try scapulas.

So we were hunting,

and we found this bovine scapula.

Like, two of them.

I could chop that tree down by hand.

It looks really good,

and it will cut.

As long as it's lashed well,

that might actually work.

[Laura] I think rock selection is

pretty important.

So in a rock, I'm basically looking

for something that is going to have...

a platform.

None of these are obviously the size

and the shape of an axe.

But maybe we can make something

the size and shape of an axe.

[Max] All right, let's see what we have here.

We can always come back.

Let's see what we can knap, get out of the sun.

[Laura] I'm so scared

- of my neck right now. - [Max] Really?

[Laura] I'm, like, just trying to move

without swinging my bag

so that I don't yank it.

So this challenge is a primitive axe build,

which I have absolutely no experience with.

And Laura's neck is still hurt.

So Max and I are going to have to pick up the slack

on the endurance part of this.

But Laura is going to guide us through how to make this.

[Laura speaking]

[Max] I think we're just going to have to make do

with what we got.

[Laura] So that is a higher than 90 degree edge

you're trying to hit.

- [Max] Do I not want that? - Nope.

So in order to...

- Let me see. - Here.

[Laura] So you want to look for something

that's less than 90,

like this one.

Being able to manipulate a stone

really depends on the angles of the stone

- and how it's going to want to break. - [Max] Yeah.

So you want an area that's less than 90 degrees

so that you can hit it with another rock

and break a chunk of it off.

I'll show you. I'm not going to actually break it,

but you're taking it,

and you want to do, like, a few practice hits

to make sure you're going to hit the right spot.

And then you want nice, clean hit.

You're not hitting the rock and stopping.

You want to think, hit through the rock,

and you want to carry it through

- as soon as it hits. - Okay.

- [Max] It's already cracking nicely. - [Laura] Oh, [bleep].

- [Max] That's good, though? - No, it's not good.

- [Max] Really? - It's full of inclusions.

It's going to [bleep] you.

Yeah, that's not really super strong.

[Max] Really?

Some rocks have these inclusions

where it's naturally occurring breaks in this rock

where if you hit it too many times the wrong way,

it's going to want to split there.

This one does not have

- great angles on it right now. - [Kaiela] Yeah.

[Laura] So you have to look for these inclusions

and avoid them

so that you don't make something

that is just setting yourself up for failure.

- [Kaiela] I'm not super thrilled with these. - [Max] Oh.

[Kaiela] I honestly think that the only option I have

is to go and find more.

[Trish] Darrin and I both did this

on the previous season.

[Matt] What did you find from your knowledge last time?

- What would you say... - [Trish] Um...

...worked and didn't work?

- What worked for me personally? - Yeah.

'Cause our camp came in first.

For me, it was a small axe that I could hold.

All the other big axes broke.

[man]...three. [gasps]

Oh, rock fell off. [bleep]

[Trish] And my small one kept us going,

so we actually were able to come in first

because of it.

Yep, that's why I made hand axes.

- [Trish] Yeah, you made awesome axes. - You know? Hatchets.

It's about short, precise swings.

More like when a dog chews a table leg,

and not one of them broke.

- [Trish] You would have kicked our ass... - Yep.

[Trish]...if you guys went faster.

You got to patent that [bleep].

[Darrin] I killed it last year,

and now I have more of a problem

of everyone trying to replicate me.

But I've got years and years of knowledge doing this,

and they don't know how many tricks

I have up my sleeve.

I already know right where we're headed.

Yeah, all right.

[Matt] Darrin, I think I'll take a little walk up

just to see if there's anything special.

- Okay. All right, good luck. - Yep.

[Darrin] I've been scouting for knapping rock

- the whole time we've been here... - I know you have.

[Darrin]...and I've noticed

two fine-grained basalts

- that I think will work. - Perfect.

And I think I'm the only person here

that's noticed that.

See this stuff?

[Trish] Oh, yeah.

You got all the rocks catalogued.

I love it.

[Darrin] They're not all peaches and cream.

See the little micro divots?

But no one else recognizes this type of stone.

[Trish] No, definitely not.

See if I can get a spall off of this guy.

I might be able to just drive a huge flake

off of a giant chunk, Trish.

[Trish] I want to watch what you're doing.

[Darrin] No, I don't like that stuff.

So we've got a natural fracture

going in right here.

It's stopping all the force from going deeper

- into that stone. - Oh, I see.

[narrator] When flint-knapping,

gaps and imperfections in the stone

will deflect the force of the hammer,

causing it to break unevenly.

[Darrin] The best flint is the most homogenous stone.

[Trish] Ooh.

That looks nice.

[cracking]

Yeah, see, that's what I'm looking for, Trish.

[Trish] Nice.

- [Darrin] Stuff like that. - Okay.

Getting to finally be working with Darrin in a camp

is amazing,

but I'm hoping that I can

pull my own weight and contribute.

You're doing awesome picking these.

[Darrin] Yeah.

[Patrick] Darrin's great at flint-knapping.

I'm great at roaming,

my energy.

And I can walk and explore more than Darrin.

I remembered from my travels

that there is nice, jagged volcanic rock.

A lot of these people out here don't have the same energy.

They're probably going to be combing mostly the beach

for rocks,

not thinking to come out here in the hot sun.

As all of our feet know,

this lava rock is super sharp.

It cuts up our feet.

These little Swiss cheese jagged parts of this

are going to rip into the tree.

This is forged by nature in a volcano.

And that is going to make all the difference

in this competition.

Now it's time to dominate.

[leaves rustling]

[animal screeching]

[Cheeny] Kind of dividing and conquering right now.

Patrick went out to find some basalt rocks.

I can try to figure out a handle.

Never made a bushcraft axe before.

But luckily, Patrick has done this before.

He knows what works.

He knows what doesn't work.

So I trust him.

I think we're going to do

like what Darrin did on the previous Last One Standing,

how he steamed the branch

and wrapped it around the head.

[Darrin] By just quickly heating

a green branch over a fire,

you can cause the moisture in the bark

to turn to steam

and it softens the wood and makes it flexible.

Took like 10 minutes.

[Ky] That's gorgeous.

[Cheeny] I'm going to try to get some vines

'cause the vines bend real easy.

We just have to watch out for the sap that's in them.

That's paper bark.

Wrap it around so I'm not touching the vines.

Even though I haven't done flint-knapping

that much before,

I am quite athletic.

I also really just enjoy chopping wood.

It's one of my favorite activities.

I mean, we can pretty much

just bludgeon this tree to death

and splinter it and get it to fall.

[Patrick] I got some bomber axe heads.

[Cheeny] Oh, awesome, dude.

Oh, yeah.

[Patrick] Let's sort through what I got,

see which ones I want to use,

and then you guys can

mess around with them after that.

[Jermaine] I finished a prototype already.

Checked it on the tree. It chops it down.

[Patrick] Nice.

Did it get into it?

Come look at it, dude. It's into it.

[Cheeny] I mean, they're brittle,

but bone's as hard as concrete.

Like, once it's lashed properly,

dude.

I'm making handles for everybody.

[Patrick] I'm going to make my own handle.

- [Jermaine] Okay, that's fair. - Yeah.

What are you going to make the handle out of?

Rubber vine and rope.

Rubber vine.

You... I want to know how that works.

[Jermaine] I know Pat's seen this before.

He's obviously done it before.

There's something about that rubber tree thing

I don't like.

I think the handle needs to be very strong.

I'm going to make a proper axe and see what happens.

[Patrick] I know that this is, like, really tried and true.

'Cause I know when Jeff and I did this,

a lot of people's axes broke

that used kind of styles like that.

An issue we had was keeping our axe heads together.

The axe head comes dislodged.

Been lashing for a long time.

[Patrick] Like, I don't think that that's a good handle.

[Jermaine chuckling] I think they look pretty damn good.

I think they're going to handle all right.

[Patrick] I know from experience

there's a way for that axe to slip out.

[Jermaine] She's definitely chopping.

[Patrick] I'm not trying to argue with you, dude. I'm just saying.

- [Jermaine] No, I'm not arguing with you. - I'm just trying to give you,

like, advice 'cause I did the challenge.

[Jermaine] You're not listening to what I'm saying, brother.

My problem is

I definitely want different looks.

If one of them fails,

pick up the next one.

Everybody wants to be told they're doing well.

I think in Patrick's case,

he needs to be told he's doing well.

And I don't want to do that.

This is a competition.

We really have to get our craft right

um, and come in

with the best thing that we possibly can.

You get what I'm saying?

We've got to have a different look.

[Patrick] He won't take, like, any advice at all.

It's frustrating.

It could be an elimination challenge.

And I know what it takes

to not go home in this competition.

We're only allowed six axes.

And if they break,

then you lose.

I think they're going to handle all right.

'cause I did the challenge.

[Jermaine] There is a difference

between cocky and confident,

and it comes with maturity.

Cocky becomes confident.

Patrick has not matured to that level yet.

I understand you guys have the best of intentions

when you speak to each other,

- it's just your delivery. - [Patrick] Mmm.

Sometimes your tones sound

not so friendly.

And, you know, it's not what you say,

it's how you say it.

[Jermaine] Don't get it twisted.

[Jermaine] That doesn't mean I'm not going to give a different look

and ask questions.

'Cause if one of them fails,

[Jermaine] Got to have a different way to look at it.

[Matt] I am going up

to switch it up a bit.

Darrin is without a doubt a rock hound.

You know, he's a wealth of knowledge,

but I am also wanting to be

able to build my own here as well.

That's a pretty decent piece right as it is.

My skill set, obviously, making knives

and crafting things,

comes in very handy on a challenge like this.

I have made these primitive axes as a kid,

played with them, chopping stuff.

This is right up my wheelhouse.

[rocks clinking]

[Darrin] This ain't the best rock,

but we're going to get edges on it.

Watch, everyone's going to try to replicate

what I made last year.

[Trish] Oh, yeah, you know they are.

Good thing I didn't tell the viewers everything I know.

For a functional quickie axe,

the style I made last year is

the same style I'm making this year.

I'm just doing a different technique

other than flint-knapping.

It's related.

It's just as ancient.

This is just called peck and crumble.

You're basically using a slightly harder rock

to literally peck and crumble away.

And with stones that aren't able to knap,

this is how you shape them.

Now I'm just getting my grooves for my axe handle.

I don't need a lot,

just enough to make sure I have a good solid purchase

so I don't lose this head during the challenge.

Then next I abrade

and try to grind it to a nice, smooth flat edge.

[narrator] When ground between two stones,

wet sand acts like primitive sandpaper,

breaking off tiny particles

from a peck-and-crumble tool

to create a sharp edge.

[Darrin] New stuff this year.

Same end result,

but a different process.

[scraping]

[Darrin] We'll be able to swing this one a lot harder.

[Laura] I haven't been over here yet,

really hoping this opens up.

[Laura speaking]

[Laura] I have made lots of primitive axes,

and I've cut down trees with primitive axes.

And then I became a blacksmith,

because I never wanted to have to do it again.

It's definitely a skill set of its own.

Flintknapping off the biggest rock

you could ever find right now.

I think I already have better rock

than what we've been dealing with.

Like, I'm putting all my force on that right now,

I'm probably going to [bleep] my neck.

And it's not breaking.

And that's like a super flimsy, thin piece of rock.

And I made these two little guys.

Hopefully, these are smaller in your way.

Something that fits my hands

and my, like, strength ability.

I can see that Laura and Max are very confident

in what they're doing,

and I am simply just lacking that today.

We haven't gotten a handle on these axes yet,

- Like, I don't know if fishing is going to happen. - Yeah.

[Max] Just tough going in tomorrow with nothing.

So I noticed that Kaiela's kind of dragging along.

She's kind of, you know, in her feels.

[Laura] I think having the, you know,

having one person do that,

and we get no fish, then...

So I'm thinking,

how can we make sure

Because we still have to make these axes,

but she's helping to provide for the team.

I don't know why I'm emotional,

like I could do really well at this.

But there are elements with this challenge

that can create chaos within your mind.

I just feel overwhelmed.

My teammates have so much more experience.

And at the end of the day,

I'm also competing against them.

And it does not feel good right now.

[Max] You are?

I wonder what's going to happen today,

whatever challenge it may be.

[Kaiela] We are still out here starving.

We are still out here sleep deprived

and trying to survive.

And to add to that,

we are now competing against each other.

And it is overwhelming,

and it is hard.

But I know that I have it within me

to push through that.

That thing is so cool.

- Thunder clap. - Yeah.

[Max] I spent a lot of time

building this freaking battle axe.

I just knew we needed another option

within our mix of axes.

We'll see how it works,

but I think the edge is really nice,

and it's going to continue to get seated in there.

And if it tries to split,

I have the rope around there,

so I'll hold it for a bit longer.

I think this will be The Damager.

This is just one of six that we have, total.

We got some hackers, we got some choppers,

we got some frickin' nice little fine-detail stuff.

[Laura] I think we need to do

a little quick test on all of them

and see if there's a certain order

that we want to chop with them

- and use them and all that kind of thing... - [Max] Totally.

- ...what we feel comfortable with. - [Max] Let's do it.

This is going to be a tough challenge.

We're the only camp with two women and a guy.

And my partners, they both have just been

kind of in a funk.

So I'm really hoping for a win.

But I'm in a tough spot.

So I just want to make sure

that we show that girl power as well as my power.

[Laura] And we got to be careful about the angles, too,

for chipping.

[Kaiela] Oh.

[Laura] Because if you have it at 45,

- that's the angle that you would knap at. - [Kaiela] That's good.

[Laura] It's only been a few days.

I hurt my neck

on the last challenge.

I'm not back to 100%,

but I'm treating every challenge out here

as if it's an elimination challenge

because I came pretty close to potentially having to leave,

and I'm not gonna make that mistake again.

Feeling really good about the volcanic rock.

So we've got a wide variety here.

We have different materials, different shapes, different sizes.

Because if we go in with six axes that are identical

and they just keep breaking one after another,

we brought the same knife to a gunfight, basically.

Just try it so you get an idea for it.

To win any game, you have to be 110% invested.

Right now, heart's just not into this one.

This feeling is not going away.

Bone's pretty tough.

but as we get to the base, it's gonna be a lot thicker so it'll be stronger.

[Patrick] Between the three of us, we have all our bases covered.

We could be walking home in first place this time.

[Darrin] Today, I expect we might just get first

because we are amped the hell up.

Porkapocalypse is about to knock some trees down today.

I think I have a lot of faith in the tools that we made.

But it's hard to not think that our camp is the underdog.

The brute force and these big guys with their big tools?

and by far we have the best axes.

Like some of them are made out of freaking rotten scapulas.

Like, those are gonna fail.

[Max] Here we go.

Today, your camp must fell a tree with a bushcraft axe.

[narrator] In this challenge, each camp must take turns

using one of their six primitive axes

to chop down one of Australia's abundant native eucalyptus trees.

Each marked tree is roughly equal in size,

ensuring a fair test of skill and endurance.

The first camp to down their tree

will earn a set of blades and nine emu eggs.

- [people exclaiming excitedly] - [Max] Let's go!

Look at those things.

They're green and they're huge.

[Patrick] One of these eggs is maybe, like, a dozen normal chicken eggs.

If we come in first, that is gonna be a huge score for our camp.

[Laura] First place, you also get two knives,

definitely a massive advantage.

These are smaller knives,

which is gonna be huge for all the delicate cutting tasks that we have.

So I really wanna win this challenge.

[Max] The second camp to finish will earn a blade and six emu eggs.

- [people chattering excitedly] - Six is still good.

The last camp to finish will earn nothing.

Wait, no elimination?

No elimination.

- We're just eating today. - [Matt] Let's go.

[Kaiela] I'm just grateful I don't have to do an elimination challenge

when I'm thin, and frail, and weak,

but the zone that I enter into when I'm in these challenges, instinct takes over.

It's like this superhuman, weird thing that comes out of me.

It's this gremlin that wants to compete, and I can't contain it.

Once it's out, it's out.

It's running rampant, and everybody be scared because she's crazy.

Your challenge starts now.

[Darrin] As soon as we break off that line,

it is 100% adrenaline fire fight.

[Kaiela] We're looking for a tree that has a good lean to it,

that's not leaning towards other trees,

that's not gonna get caught up.

Chop it, hit it once in there.

All right. Get after it, buddy.

It takes a lot of brute strength to take down these trees,

but it also takes endurance and finesse to be able to cut the tree

and see what the tree is actually doing

instead of just bashing away and hoping it just goes down.

It's not really the same as like felling a tree with a normal axe

That is gonna intimidate a lot of my competitors.

Plus, I've tested these axes.

So going into this competition, I'm feeling really confident.

It's all about strategy out here.

We wanna work our way around it

kind of like a beaver 'cause we wanna try to get to the center

and give it a good whack and crack it.

[Darrin] The axe is doing awesome in this challenge.

My goal is to remove all the bark from our cut zone before I tire out

so Matt can step in and start removing the wood.

[Trish] Yeah, baby.

[Darrin] Dude, last year, I played it safe.

We swung light with our axes so they wouldn't break.

This year, we gotta swing harder

and test our tools to their limits.

[Kaiela] You're killing it, Max.

You're killing it.

[Laura] Yeah, dude, that was worth it.

Look at your hard work paying off.

We used our best axe head, and I am so glad we did.

Because that thing's a powerhouse with Max behind it.

[Max grunting]

[Jermaine] Okay, switch.

[Patrick] Jermaine is like an animal.

He is hammering away at this tree like a woodpecker.

We need to get this tree down so we can get those eggs and knife.

- Get it. Good work, Jermaine. - [Patrick] Keep going.

[Cheeny] Jermaine, that axe is money, dude.

- Matt, you ready? - [Matt] Yep, ready.

- [Matt] We're going to town on this tree. - [Trish] Come on, Matt.

[Matt] Darrin essentially chipped away the bark,

and I came in to bash the innards out of this tree.

[Trish] Home run.

[Matt] This axe with that Darrin Reay signature vine twist,

it had a monster, about 5-pound rock.

That big rock allowed for some serious fiber crushing power

on that tree.

[Darrin] Just call it when you're ready, Matt.

[Matt] All right. Three, two, go.

[Darrin] This is one of the few challenges that I told myself

I would not come in second or third

just because the axes I build, I know they're the best axes.

I like to show that what I do works hours. Ours don't break.

[Matt] Get it, Trish. Get it.

- [Matt exclaims] - [Trish] Oh, [bleep].

[narrator] The three camps are neck and neck

as they take turns chopping a eucalyptus tree

using their bush crafted primitive axes.

The first to fell their tree and carry it to the starting point

receives two precision hunting knives and a cache of nine emu eggs.

[Cheeny] Hammer it.

You're slipping out. Your head's slipping out.

[Jermaine] Cheeny, Patrick, switch.

Cheeny jumps in with her scapula,

but I'm looking, this scapula is not putting much of a dent

in the hardwood of this tree on the outside, so I'm a little bit worried.

You know, I'm pretty lucky that I got two guys on the team,

but you should never underestimate a woman in these things

'cause we are just as strong and I've been swinging an axe for a long time.

- Switch. Switch with me. - Switch? All right.

This isn't really taking [bleep].

I feel like my greatest contribution

to this challenge was yesterday.

Making our axe heads out of flint, that was a really good move.

They are actually holding it together.

All right, you wanna tap out?

- No. - [Max] Nice, keep going. Yeah, girl.

People think that if you have a woman on your team,

you might be a little bit disadvantaged because they're not as strong.

And that is BS.

Kaiela and Laura for that fact are some of the toughest people out here,

and they could easily be the last ones standing.

Oh, baby, she on a roll.

Darrin, we gotta repair... Some of these need some more cordage.

[Matt] This eucalyptus tree, I realize that I know this wood.

I've chopped this tree down already,

testing some of the wood around here.

This tree has a lot of moisture in it,

and because of that, it can't hold its weight under pressure.

So I know what we have to do is smash those fibers.

So I bring out the bruiser, and this is a baseball bat sized axe.

A tomahawk made with a basalt rock.

It hits that tree, and each fiber just smashes.

I know it's gonna fall.

[Darrin] We're, like, so close to being the first to finish this challenge.

Jermaine, get on this side and hit that end.

- What? Yeah, I know. - [Patrick] Keep going.

[Max] Almost there.

You ready to step in, Kaiela? This might be breaking.

I'm ready.

- [Laura] Go. - [Max] Get in there.

We need one of those knives.

And not only do we need one of those knives,

we need those eggs in our stomach.

That is nature's freaking multivitamin.

- Yeah! Yeah, buddy-- - [Trish screams]

[narrator] Darrin, Matt, and Trish are the first camp to fell their tree.

Now they must haul their tree to the finish line

to claim their prize of nine eggs and two knives.

This year, I swung a little harder.

[Laura] Luckily, these strings we put on there for reinforcement purposes,

they're not actually holding it together.

We used our best axe head.

This incredibly strong basalt rock.

Absolute monster of an axe.

[Kaiela] We're confident that we're gonna get at least get second place.

We're so close to getting our tree on the ground.

[Jermaine] To take down a tree with a rock,

you're exerting a lot of effort.

I'm definitely slowing down my breathing, taking deeper breaths

so that I can continue longer at chopping this tree down.

- [bleep] yeah. - Almost there.

- [Jermaine] Coming at a different side. - [Patrick] Yeah.

- [Kaiela] I'm ready. - I'll help you out.

I don't know what happened. We were running with the tree...

I must have rolled my ankle and I've hurt it for sure.

- [Max] Look at those six eggs. - [Laura] Look at this!

They're so pretty.

We crushed it. We put together some beautiful axes.

I was up all night crafting this bad boy.

I was able to lay into that thing the entire time.

It was seated perfectly.

We came in second.

We ended up scoring a really nice knife and six emu eggs.

So that means we're getting protein

that will push us into the next couple of days, and that's a huge win.

I mean, to actually have a proper blade of some sort, you know...

To get two knives is absolutely huge.

You have to have those smaller knives

to make small traps, small mechanisms,

and also to process big game.

- Yeah, let's go eat. - [Laura] Yeah.

[Jermaine] I don't like to lose.

I don't even imagine it,

I don't know how to put myself in that position of losing.

And it's like... I don't know.

It's just... I'm not having fun.

Guys, we did fantastic.

So pound for pound, Patrick, Cheeny, and Jermaine

are probably one of the biggest powerhouses teams out here.

And, you know, obviously, coming in last today.

I can't help but think that picking Trish over Jermaine

was a tactical decision.

Trish does not like to quit,

and I had to pick that over someone who has brute strength,

and it was worth it.

[grunts]

[Darrin] Whoo! Good job, buddy.

- Today was a day. - There's the axe that did it.

That was the one. That belongs in the Smithsonian.

[Darrin whoops triumphantly]

- Whoo! - [Darrin] What are we gonna do with all this food?

Dude...

This is incredible. Like, we got two freaking pig legs.

We got ribs,

we got a whole pot of freaking pork brewing on the kettle.

And now we've got, like, 4 pounds of eggs.

We've got more protein than I've ever had in a challenge combined.

And egg protein is like the best protein for your body.

[Trish] So, hey, my eggs are right here under this paper bark.

[Darrin] It really is a special feeling

when you don't have to worry about your next meal.

- We gotta eat, and laugh, and [bleep] sleep. - Yep.

[Laura] So this is a massive amount of food.

We're each going to be able to eat two of these things.

It's a huge score.

Max was a powerhouse today. He gnawed through most of that tree.

I was definitely trying to get as much power as I could.

My neck's still a little bit jacked up

so I'm struggling a little bit right now with that.

Tonight, we wanna hard boil at least one of them tonight?

[Laura] I don't think they're gonna keep as long as we want,

- so I'm just gonna bury the rest of them here. - [Max] Oh, cool.

I think the biggest sin out here would be to let any of them go bad.

As soon as we get back, we just make, like, a nest for these eggs

because they need to be as cold and refrigerated as possible

before we can decide what we're gonna do with them.

But they're these beautiful blue-greenish, like, emerald eggs.

I've never seen anything like it.

It's just so special about that.

It feels like a dragon should be hatched out of that thing.

- [Laura] Dinner. - [Max] Nice.

[Kaiela] Hard-boiled emu eggs.

[Laura] You wanna drag that whole pot in?

[Max] Oh, yeah, you could dump the whole thing.

- All right. Keeping it. - [Kaiela] Yeah, exactly.

I'm so excited.

Egg-cited to eat this thing.

It's probably, like, six chicken eggs all into one, and I'm ecstatic.

[Cheeny] I started noticing Jermaine just being a little more quiet.

He looked a little defeated.

You know, losing a challenge never feels good,

and sometimes it just brings you to a bad place.

I've been in Jermaine's shoes before,

and it's so easy to get into a funk.

My heart is not in this at all.

And, you know, survival is 90% mental.

[Calum] So, obviously, this is supposed to be firm, but not tight.

- And you can adjust it however you want. - [Jermaine] Yes, sir.

As much, obviously, as rest as you can give it in the first 24 hours.

And if you can elevate it at all,

like, put it up on something, on the pot or on a log or whatever,

- just to keep that fluid moving down. - [Jermaine] Cool.

[Calum] But, yeah, just rest and keep it up. And we'll see how we go.

- Any concerns? - No.

I don't know if it's terrible.

She is steady, she's highly skilled, and she's quiet.

Growing up, my dad always said, "Watch the quiet ones

Competition's not the problem.

It's putting two of my loves together.

I like to do the regular survival thing.

I think that part of this game, for some people, you delve into mind games.

Patrick's got this little... The mustache twirling antagonist.

Patrick is playing that role.

For me, I like to be in the wilderness

and I don't ever want that to be a negative feeling.

Survivalists follow their instincts.

And in this case, I followed my instincts.

I've never tapped before, so it was weird. A new thing.

But 100% made the right decision.

[narrator] With Jermaine's exit from the competition,

only eight survivalists remain to compete for the title of Last One Standing.

[Matt] Jermaine has left. Not really a surprise.

If you can't get along with your camp, it's tough.

You know what they say is the strong shall stay

and the weak shall fall by the wayside.

And unfortunately, Jermaine fell out and he left.

And now we're down to eight, and I am one step closer to be the Last One Standing.
