My name's Omar.

I'm from Salt Lake City, Utah.

And I'm a plumber.

The ecosystem here is pretty close

to my last challenge in Colombia.

I hope I have an awesome partner.

I'm gonna try real hard to get along this time.

Twenty one days. This doesn't look like it's gonna be very easy.

I'm John. I'm a banker from Haleyville, Alabama.

I finished my 14-day challenge in Cabo Corrientes, Mexico.

My biggest takeaway was that it's not as easy as it looks on TV.

We were always out scouting for food...

-I got him. Yeah. -[Mylaena] No, shut up.

[John] ...but very limited resources.

And we were hungry just about every day.

Nothing again over here.

So, I want to prove to myself

that anything is achievable if you set your mind to it.

[Omar] All right, it's time to do it.

It's about that time, and I'm that guy.

Getting naked in the jungle.

Going into this jungle this the time of year,

where there's a lot of snakes...

Let's do it.

...one bite from that virulent snake can be lethal.

It's one thing to get medically tapped,

and another thing to just not make it at all.

[narrator] Based on Omar's 14-day fan challenge,

he begins his 21-day challenge

with a Primitive Survival Rating of 6.5 out of 10.

[John] Here I am. It's time to go feed the mosquitoes.

It is rather warm here.

I don't know if it's gonna get cold enough

that we're gonna have to share body heat or not,

but I have a strict no-cuddling mandate from my girlfriend.

Maybe back-to-back will be okay,

but no spooning.

[narrator] John enters the challenge with an initial PSR of 7.4.

-Well, hey, there. -It's not who I expected.

-[John] Yeah, man. -Not at all. How are you, dude?

-I'm doing great. I'm John. -I remember...

-You look familiar. -[Omar] Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Holy crap, man.

You were the one that was in a car wreck.

You had a car wreck, bad wreck and survival... Good for you.

[John] In 2006, I was in a terrible car accident.

I broke my neck.

I cracked my skull.

Since I came so close to death,

that experience helped me...

Under pressure situations that are tough,

I just know how to deal with them.

And mental toughness is the most important skill out here.

-It's just another challenge to survive this one, too. -Right.

Let's do it, dude I'm excited.

-We did 14, so I mean... -Yes.

Well... I brought my mosquito net.

[Omar] I did notice there's no fire starter...

Yeah, there's nothing in here.

...so we're gonna have to rely on our primitive skills.

I think between the two of us, we can get it done, though.

I hope so.

Little bit worried about the fire situation.

We're in a jungle. It's raining all the time.

We're gonna have to resort to friction fire.

It's not gonna be easy, though.

But right in here, looks like a really good spot.

[John] Right. It looks like nice and clear.

-We need to, I guess... -[Omar] Yep.

-...find a big tree, it looks like. -[Omar] Yep.

Looks like we should just head downstream and follow the river.

-It should take us right to where we need to go. -[John] Yeah.

to see him here, you know.

I thought I was gonna have a female partner, but no, it's Omar,

The jungle in Belize is no joke.

But I'm ready for it. You know why?

Because I'm brave and bougie,

and I wanna make it out alive!

which is probably my least favorite part.

I know this 21 day is going to be a beep.

I'm scared of the bugs.

I'm scared of the rain.

I'm scared of the wind.

I'm scared of the snakes.

And guess what? It's all right here,

And I'm about to go out there to face it.

About a quarter mile.

-We're going down the river. -All right.

As of right now, I have no concerns about my partners.

It's the honeymoon phase, though.

We all know that we get hungry, we get hangry.

But I'm gonna take it.

I'm gonna take it all the way to 21, baby.

Ooh! Lord, my feet!

[narrator] To reach a suitable camp area,

Malu, John and Omar

must head four miles north

up the Roaring River of Central Belize...

so named for its devastating flashfloods.

The river snakes through impenetrable jungle

crawling with venomous pit vipers...

and home to the area's largest apex predator, the jaguar.

[growling]

[narrator] With the recent arrival of wet season,

torrential rainstorms relentlessly pound the jungle,

unleashing massive swarms of mosquitoes

which carry dengue fever

and the Zika virus.

[John] Ow!

[Omar] My feet are beat up already.

[Malu] Is this hard, or is it just me?

[Omar] No, it is hard.

Oh!

I'm sinking a little bit.

[Malu] Ooh! I forgot what

-jungle water felt like in my lady parts. -[chuckles]

-[thunder rumbling] -[John] You guys hear that thunder?

[Omar] I do. And I don't like it.

-[Malu] Oh, it's gonna rain. -[John] Ugh! There's the rain.

[thunder rumbling]

[John straining] Ow.

-[Omar] Do you wanna get out? -[Malu] I kind of think so.

[Omar] I kind of do, too.

[bleep]

-[Malu] Jesus. -[Omar] Okay.

The rain just started.

It started a little earlier than I wanted it to today.

But it's been a long... journey so far.

And we're not quite to where we need to be yet.

This is insane, y'all.

And just so you know, Malu, I'm checking for snakes!

Oh, my gosh.

[John] At least, the rain stopped.

Ow!

-[Malu] You okay? -[John] Yeah.

Yeah, I just stepped on, like, a huge thorn.

-We gotta be almost there. -[sighs wearily]

[Malu] I hate these rocks.

My feet are done for.

This looks like a beachy... place.

That's, kind of, like on the map.

Yeah, this might be it.

-[John] I think so. -[Omar] I think so, too.

I say we just keep following this dry riverbed,

and see if we can find us some high ground and set up camp.

You guys good with that?

Yeah, we got to look for the big tree.

We gotta head into the jungle.

[Malu] Head into the jungle?

[John] Yep.

Being in the rainy season means that

there's a great chance for flash floods.

Water can rise several feet in just a matter of seconds.

We've got to build a shelter that's high enough

that we're not gonna get flooded if the flood comes.

-[Malu] Oh, that hurt! -[John] Ow!

-[Omar] It's gotta be-- -[John] Ow!

[Omar] Son of a bitch.

[John] All right, we got a thorn.

[Omar] Oh, yeah. Careful.

[Malu] I'm just gonna voice my concerns about

-how far this is from the water source. -[Omar grunts]

It's an easy walk.

[strained sighs]

[John] Guys, I think we might have found it.

[Omar] That is definitely the tree.

Wow. Where do y'all want to build the shelter?

[John] I say we build it right here.

There's plenty of palms.

We'll be able to use those for part of the shelter.

-There are some mosquitoes, unfortunately. -Yeah.

What kind of shelter you want to build?

Enclosed jungalow...

-deep roof. -I only asked because I wanted

to hear you say it. [chuckles]

[Malu] My number one strategy is to have a good shelter,

just like last time.

Shelter is key.

So, we are finally building my new jungalow!

-It is going to rain hard. -[Kyle] It's essential.

But no, seriously,

-that's what y'all want, too, though, right? -[John] Yeah.

-I just want the bugs off me. -Yeah. Okay.

Well, we need it enclosed, so...

We still have a lot of work to do, but just gotta take it easy.

Don't go too fast.

-Just keep gathering firewood? -[Omar] Yeah.

See if you can find anything dry.

I've ever had in my life.

I mean, this is just all wet and dry-rotted.

Finding something dry in Belize

during the rainy season... impossible.

I really wish we were off the ground.

I don't know how we're gonna do that with such little time.

We're not raised off the ground.

[John] It's our motel.

Bates Motel. I mean, I didn't want to stay in the Bates Motel.

We gotta figure this out.

If I was at home eating tacos,

the number one thing I would say would be,

"Oh, my God, y'all's shelter is not on point."

What I'm concerned about is when it pours,

y'all need an enclosed shelter.

But that's not a shelter.

And y'all are gonna suffer tonight.

-God, I hate this. -Day one, Malu.

We're in it for the long haul.

I'm not happy with this shelter.

But I don't wanna be overly bossy right off the bat.

We have a lot of days for me to get on their nerves.

[John] The biggest priority is fire and getting the water boiling.

[Omar] I could start the fire with that tape.

Ooh, there's a good fiber.

[narrator] Duct tape is constructed of cloth fibers

and an adhesive chemical compound

that is highly flammable.

There's wood burning, it's not just tape. Let's go!

Hey, we just made fire in a very, very wet environment, y'all.

I ain't gonna lie.

-[John] Well, we had a big hike. -[exhales]

I thought when I did my fan challenge,

I was ready to do 21 days,

but it's gonna be a struggle.

This is gonna be hard.

And I'm nervous. I know it's a very vulnerable state to be in at night,

but it's just part of the game.

[John] I wanna put the mosquito net in the shelter.

[Malu speaking]

Here we are on our first night. We're all beat.

Our feet hurts.

We've got the fire

finally starting to really burn.

We've kept out the mosquitoes so far.

The nets really helped out.

[Omar] Yeah, but...

The mosquitoes bit the [bleep] out of us all day long.

-[Malu] I told you. -[Omar] Holy [bleep].

Like, I think the one's in Colombia

pack the harder punch,

bite, bite, bite.

These ones, you don't even realize they're biting you,

until you're swelled up,

and then you just sit, and it's awful.

Yeah, they put us in hell,

and we're just gonna have to figure out how to live in hell.

-What's the plan? -I thought we should go down to the river.

We're gonna need water pretty soon.

[Omar] I need to go rinse in the river.

One of these plants up here...

does not like my skin.

[Malu] All righty. Y'all ready?

-[John] I'm ready. -[Omar] Yeah, I'm ready.

[Malu] Last night was hard. It was only day one.

This location sucks.

And am I happy right now? No.

I don't think you're ever supposed to be happy

on aked and Afraid.

[Omar] Oh, my back.

[Omar] When I got up, my back went out.

-Oh. -[Omar] Ow. Yeah, I think it was just the way I was laying.

[John] Maybe you just need to get moving around again.

That scared me for a sec.

I might have laid too long on my back,

'cause when I went to get up, my back went out,

and it's really sore right now.

of these goddamn bugs.

Oh, I can't wait to get in that river!

But I'm gonna start piling a couple of rocks

-and making a wall right there. -[John] Yeah, dude.

You know what I mean? While we're here, we might as well

throw a couple of rocks in there.

-[John] Yeah, trap the fish? -[Omar] Yeah, buddy.

I've been successful in the past.

Instead of building a fish basket,

we just turned a whole section of the river into a fish trap.

No way.

This way we have a huge part of the river

that doesn't look unfamiliar to the fish.

And we should be able to just grab them out of the river

with our hands when we're done, if we do it right.

[Malu] Look at all the little fishies.

This is where we're gonna build our fish trap?

-[both men] Yep. -[John] But we're catching bigger than that.

We're... This is gonna be good. This is a perfect spot.

We're gonna make a solid wall

to the middle... the middle of this channel,

the deepest point.

And if this works out like it did last time, it's gonna be awesome.

[narrator] Using the same principle as a fish basket,

blocking off a section of the river

allows fish to enter the narrow channel

where they can't find their way back out.

[Omar] Damn, that looks good.

I like it.

Guys, look how dark those clouds are getting behind us.

I know. That's coming, huh?

That sucks, though, because I wanted to stay down here for a little bit.

-[John] Yeah, I know. -[Omar grunts]

I'm going back, y'all I wanna go fortify the roof.

His back is hurt.

because this is a really tough challenge.

All it does is just make me think about

how I'm not there with my dad.

It's a lot.

and take on your loved one being in the hospital.

but it's messing with my head.

[Omar] I feel so weak, though.

I feel like I should be able to go a little harder than this.

This is not a water-tight shelter.

[Omar] It feels like we've been here for ten days.

[Omar] My body feels like we've been here for ten days.

[Malu] How do you feel? Tired?

I am-- Yeah, I'm tired.

-[Omar] Definitely beat up. -That rain last night, it sucked.

How's your back doing today?

My back is sore.

-[John] Yeah. -And I think I pinched a nerve

because I have no feeling in my left foot.

Oh, [bleep].

But I'm still here. I'll be all right.

[John] Well, how are you feeling, Malu?

[Malu] So, listen, I need to talk to y'all about something.

The day before insertion,

you know, my mom told me that--

You know, that they put my dad on life support,

and, um, they put him in an induced coma.

[Omar] Scary.

The day before insertion, my dad had emergency surgery

that caused a little bit of sepsis,

and he was put into a medically-induced coma.

And I had to make a hard decision.

Do I do Naked and Afraid, or do I go back home?

So I went ahead and came because I thought it was only gonna be one person,

and I didn't want to let my one partner down.

My mom kept saying, "You can't let somebody down.

You know, we don't want to let anybody down."

-But there's two of you. -Yeah.

So I'm gonna go ahead and leave

because I just don't think I would be able to live with myself if--

If my dad died while I was out here.

I support you 100%.

Yeah, just from, you know, my own experience

being in the hospital like that, I was in a coma.

I wasn't expected to survive.

And I truly believe that having people there,

you know, people who love me,

is what helped me survive.

-[Omar] 100%. -[Malu] Yeah.

I've been in a situation where,

you know, my life was just barely hanging on.

Um, my family was told I wasn't going to make it.

But just the fact that,

you know, you have people surrounding you, people that care about you.

You know, for her to be there with him might make it easier for him.

I'm gonna miss y'all, but I ain't gonna miss this place.

[Omar laughing]

It's tough losing her, you know.

Strength in numbers on about everything you do, so it's tough.

But I feel like she's making a good choice.

Family is everything.

His back's been hurting him, his foot's going numb.

I want to try to do what I can to make him comfortable.

It does worry me a little bit that I may potentially

have to finish this out by myself.

And, you know, not just,

you know, because he might tap out,

but also because I don't want to see him suffering.

[Omar] On my way to the river to check on my, uh, fish trap.

We could really use some food because we're starving.

Caught something out of our dried up fish trap.

so we gotta figure out what the deal is with that.

Last night was the most miserable night here.

I am really concerned that Omar might tap out,

so I'll do the work of two people.

I'll look for food,

I'll get our water, I'll gather the firewood

because having to complete this challenge on my own,

it's not really something I-- I would enjoy.

My bag is gonna be heavy.

that I'm not even thinking about being hungry.

Like, we've had a little bit to eat,

I just am counting the days until I can get out of here.

I'm trying to reinforce the shelter a little bit.

to hold some of these palm fronds that have fallen over.

for a 14-day fan challenge.

to try to survive for 14 days.

I'm ready for it.

I'd describe myself as pretty adventurous.

If you asked any of my friends,

they'd say I'm the risk taker.

I've been bungee jumping, skydiving, diving with sharks.

I've lived in Belize in the past.

I spent a year here working with crocodilians.

I am a crocodilian biologist by trade.

The most intimidating thing about Belize, to me,

are honestly just the mosquitoes.

They love me, I hate them.

And the constant rain.

But I know how to find food in this jungle.

We can fish, we can hunt.

This jungle has plenty to eat.

Oh, here's my bag.

And I'm willing to find that.

We've got a pot.

And, oh, looks like some fishing gear.

That tree looks like a pretty significant landmark.

So maybe that's where I'll meet my partner.

I'm gonna head that way.

I feel like I can do a 14-day challenge

because it's similar to my past fieldwork,

where we have limited access to food or resources,

days away from medical.

Basically open to the elements.

Definitely harder without shoes.

I never expected to be naked in the jungle,

but I'm a self-certified badass,

and I'm ready to test that.

For the last few days,

with the lack of sleep,

lack of food, the constant rain,

spirits have been a little more down than normal.

has to lay down,

pouring sweat, the water is not refreshing him.

Really been depleted.

So, I've gotten kind of used to being in the thunderstorms.

right before I got him on shore.

Twenty-one days, guys. 14 days.

-We did it! -Oh, we did it!

-Oh! -Yes! Let's go!

-I cannot believe we made it here. -Whoo!

[John] I'm exhausted, but I couldn't be happier.

My hardest obstacle during this challenge

was sleep deprivation and food deprivation.

Both of those things

started to eat at me towards the end.

But if you want something bad enough, you're gonna go for it.

And out of any goal that I've ever tried to reach,

this has gotta be the top.

[narrator] After surviving 21 days,

John lost 16 pounds.

His primitive survival rating

moves up from 7.4 to 7.8.

I just did 14 days! Whoo!

It's been exciting, humbling.

You two have been the best partners anyone could ask for.

I like to believe I'm fearless.

So, I came in here thinking it would be easier

than it was and was humbled.

My field research helped,

but didn't really fully prepare me

for coming out here being nude

in the middle of the Belizean forest.

[narrator] Danni lost ten pounds

during her 14-day Fan Challenge.

And her PSR rises from 6.2...

to 6.7.

My last challenge,

not getting along with my partner was my biggest challenge.

This time,

my biggest lesson I've learned about myself

is that you're not done when you think you're done.

And hopefully, you'll have good people around you to remind you where it's at.

Because I did, and I can't thank them enough.
