[both laughing]
[woman] This jungle will mess with you psychologically out here.
[laughing]
โช Everything that moves needs to be food โช
โช Hey, little jungle โช
โช Some food would be good โช
โช I'm pretty hungry โช
โช Pretty hungry. Pretty hungry โช
โช Some food would be good โช
[retching]
โช Some food โช
[laughing echoes]
This is crazy. [laughing]
There are definitely crocs watching us right now.
But this will be the test of all testaments as far as I'm concerned.
There are all kinds of creepy crawlers on the ground,
including venomous snakes.
We have the fer-de-lance,
the coral snake, the rattlesnake.
At any point, I get smacked by one of these guys,
it could be day 20, I'm probably going home.
I'm in someone's backyard who doesn't want me there.
There are all kinds of threats and concerns in this jungle.
There are jaguars, giant spiders.
I feel like I'm at the top of a cliff and I've already started to jump.
[narrator] The Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico
is an ancient jungle steeped in the dark history of the Mayan empire,
an area where for hundreds of years,
human sacrifice and blood rituals
were offered as gifts to the Mayan gods.
Here, high temperatures and humidity make for sweltering conditions
with dense populations of mosquitoes
that carry malaria and dengue fever.
The jungle is also home to deadly predators like the morelet crocodile,
which ambushes its prey with speeds of up to 32 miles per hour.
As well as Jaguars,
the largest and most aggressive cat in the Americas.
[Shawn] Uh-oh, I know what that means.
It's time to get naked.
I'm about to meet my partner, and I've got butterflies in my stomach.
I don't know what it's gonna be like.
All right, let's go.
Time to dance.
I'll see you in 21 days.
Hi. [laughing] Yeah.
-Nice to meet you. -I'm Shawn.
-I'm Noa. Yeah. -[Shawn] Hi, Noa. Nice to meet you.
-You sound Canadian or Western? -[Shawn] Yes.
Yes, I'm five hours north of Toronto.
-Oh, awesome. -[Shawn] I know.
-Where you from? -Awesome. I'm in North Carolina in Asheville.
-Yes. -Okay, that's fantastic.
-It's good to see you. -It's good to see you.
-I'm so excited to know you. -[both laughing]
Hey, we're gonna do all right.
Yeah, we're gonna do awesome.
Hey, I'm Stephanie.
-Julian. Nice to meet you. -[Stephanie] Nice to meet you.
-Where are you from? -Miami.
-Miami. I'm from Jacksonville area. Yeah. -No way.
-Florida gang. -[Stephanie] Yeah.
I'm good at hunting, trapping, um, fishing,
foraging, so...
-Oh. It sounds like I got the right partner. -Yeah. I think we'll eat.
-We'll eat. [laughs] For sure. -Good. That sounds all right.
-Shall we check out our stuff? -[Stephanie] Yeah, let's go.
-So I brought a knife. -[Stephanie] Perfect.
-This is paracord. -Oh. Cool.
Fishing line and hooks.
Beautiful.
-I've got my machete. Yeah. -Oh, good.
[narrator] In addition to their personal items,
both teams are given a pot.
That is great.
-[narrator] A fire starter. -Cool.
[narrator] And because of the high risk of dengue virus and malaria...
-[gasps] -...a bug net.
-Yes, dude. [laughing] -[Stephanie] I'm about to cry.
-This is a complete game changer. -Good for our mental health.
I can't believe that.
-[Noa] Yes, let's go. -[laughs]
-Dude, I'm gonna cry. -[both laughing]
-And, uh, we have the map. -Yeah.
-I guess it looks like we're at this tree over here. -Yeah.
[Julian] Okay. I guess this might be our point here.
So I think that our best bet
-is to find the first source of water. -[Julian] Yeah.
And it looks like there's two other people in here.
Oh, boy, you see what I've seen?
-Yeah, there's definitely four there. -[Noa] Uh-huh.
It looks like there are other people involved in this challenge
that are not just me and Shawn.
Finding out that there are more people involved, I am just so surprised.
At some point, we're gonna meet up with another group
and have to survive together.
Yeah, more variables in the pot.
-[Shawn] So we're walking west. -[Noa] Okay.
-Yeah. Northwest. -We're walking northwest.
-Let's do it. -All right. Lead the way.
[Shawn] You just want me to lead or yourself?
-[Noa] I can go. -[Shawn] Right on.
[narrator] As they begin the tribes challenge,
the two teams will trek to separate ponds
and survive for ten days before heading north on day 11
to merge at one of the area's many large cenotes,
giant sinkholes filled with groundwater
that Mayans believe were mystical portals between Earth and the underworld.
[Stephanie] Very, very thick out here.
[Julian] You gotta be real careful where you put your feet.
[Stephanie] Ow. [bleep]
Damn!
[Julian] You all right?
[Stephanie] Damn, this trail is brutal.
Just be careful 'cause there's a lot of scorpions
and tarantulas and fertile ants out here.
Sure. [Stephanie] This jungle is relentless.
There are mosquitoes everywhere,
thorns sticking in your foot every second.
But I'm here to kick ass and show how tough I can really be.
-Now, bugs will drive you crazy. -Yeah.
So if you can't get a bug net, you can make a stacked debris hut.
Then that would... that would help tremendously.
I became a survivalist because my dad was really big into survival.
[dad] This isn't a dead pole.
[Stephanie] Growing up, my father was my best friend.
We went hunting together, scuba diving together,
and he's taught me a lot.
Now that would be good enough for a rattler squirrel.
[Stephanie] There's so many different skills
that when I told him I was coming here,
he told me that I was too soft.
You said I was too soft.
[Stephanie] It really didn't sit right with me,
so that's going to be a big driving factor
to make it all 21 days so I can prove him wrong.
[narrator] Stephanie begins the challenge
with a Primitive Survival Rating of 6.2 out of 10.
-Kind of wish you went first to pick up all the thorns. -[Stephanie laughs]
[both laughing]
My biggest fear out here is realizing that I'm a pussy.
I don't know if I consider myself a survivalist,
but I know how to survive.
I can find water. I can make fire. I can hunt.
Since I was 12 years old, the only thing I ever wanted to be
was a Green Beret in the Army.
And I spent my life training up for that job,
dedicating myself to mental toughness,
physical hardening, 'cause that's all I cared about.
Unfortunately, when I went to enlist,
the doctors found an irregular heartbeat,
which is a disqualifiable condition.
So just like that, all my dreams went out the window
and they told me, "You're out."
Maybe I'll never get to wear a Green Beret,
but I can walk out of this jungle in 21 days victorious,
and I need to prove that to myself.
[narrator] Julian starts his tribe's challenge
with a PSR of 6.4.
The mosquitoes are thick out here.
[Noa] What's leading you to want to do this?
[Shawn] I really wanted to challenge myself
because, um, my brother, Chad,
-has taken on Naked and Afraid challenges twice now. -[Noa] Really?
Yeah.
Oh, boy, any last advice before I go?
-Yeah, don't die. -[laughing]
You know, my brother Chad gave it his best. He gave it his all.
Yes. Yes.
Oh, my. How much better could one day be?
Whoo. All right.
Hell, yeah, brother.
He never did finish.
[Chad] I'm falling short for a second time.
I... I just cannot... [sniffles]
Cannot do it.
[Shawn] But I believe with the training I have,
I'm very confident in the skills that I have to offer.
Being in the military,
working as a search and rescue technician,
I've been through a lot of survival situations
in some pretty harsh environments.
I consider myself an expert when it comes to trapping, fishing and hunting.
It takes years to build this thick skin.
So I don't plan on leaving this challenge anything less than 21 days.
[narrator] Shawn's starting Primitive Survival Rating is set at 6.9.
[Shawn] How about you?
[Noa] Yeah, it feels like a really spiritual experience for me.
Like wanting to connect with the natural world.
[Shawn] You know, you're definitely gonna get that out here
'cause the spirits out in this jungle.
There's a lot of things that go on in this jungle.
I think so, yeah.
[Shawn] You may get a little bit more than what you asked for.
[Noa] Nature feels like my church.
It's the place I go to be in connection
with something higher than myself.
It's everything.
For the majority of my 20s
I have been finding ways to work outside,
whether that's for the Forest Service or in wilderness therapy.
I learned plants very quickly and what could be used for medicines
and what could be used for food.
I know I have these skills, but there's also, like, self-doubt.
This is hard. [chuckles]
Oh.
[narrator] Noa enters the challenge with a PSR of 5.6.
Yeah, it seems like we'll know we're there when we find that small pool.
We can't be far now from how it looked on the map there.
We gotta be getting close.
[Stephanie] You burp a lot.
[Julian] I feel like throwing up, dude.
-[Stephanie] Do you feel like you're gonna throw up? -[Julian] Yeah.
[Stephanie] Oh.
I'm not feeling that good right now.
I'm sweating a lot, and I feel like throwing up.
So right now I'm...
...just trying to cool myself off,
reel myself back in and remind myself
that there's still a lot of challenge left to go, so...
But, uh...
[Stephanie] You're not tapping, right?
-[Julian] Not anytime soon. -[Stephanie] Okay.
[Shawn] Is that a water source we're coming up to?
-[Noa] Yeah, that's water. -[Shawn] I think we have water.
Jeez, Louise.
[Noa] How about we take a look around
and see where it makes the most sense to put camp?
This is as flat as it gets.
-And you know what? The water is... -[Noa] Yeah, you think?
-...in visual there right from where you're standing. -[Noa] Yeah.
We have a spot here you can almost make a lean to right out of here.
[Noa] Yeah, I was thinking too,
if we were able to elevate the platform.
-Yes, 100%. -And so...
Do you want to do shelter?
-And then I'll do fire and get some water boiling. -Okay.
-Yeah. I love your idea. Love it. -[Noa] Yeah.
[Stephanie] That looks like a good spot to get water from.
[Julian] This looks like a decent campsite.
[Stephanie] Right next to water.
Yeah, let's walk around a bit.
See if we can't find a spot. to set up camp.
[Stephanie] Oh, my gosh.
We need to get a shelter and a fire going
because these mosquitoes are horrible.
This might be pretty good, actually, right here in this area.
We're far away from the water where mosquitoes aren't tearing us up.
So, um...
So let's start... Let's start sweeping it out
and start gathering some firewood.
-[Stephanie] Okay. -Building shelter.
-Yeah. -[Stephanie] Sounds good.
We've got a lot of vegetation, a lot of bush and trees to work with
as far as making fire, building shelter.
[Noa] Good job.
I think we've got an idea going on here.
That's awesome.
Your blade's doing wonders.
[Noa] Oh, great.
[Shawn] Burn, baby, burn.
-Fire's looking really good. -Thank you.
I don't know about you, but I'm ready to drink some water.
I might hack one more tree and then sit down for a little bit.
-[Noa] Sure. -I knew it was gonna be hot.
But I didn't think the humidity was going to be 80 to 100%.
I mean, it's literally a punch to the face.
It's unbelievable.
[Stephanie] You feeling okay?
[Julian burps]
My stomach hurts and I feel like throwing up.
[Stephanie] Oh, it's very hot.
The most uncomfortable part of anything that we're going to face
would be hitting mosquitoes unprotected.
We don't have a lot of time to build a shelter before it gets nighttime, so...
[Julian speaking]
-We can hang a mosquito net up here from up top. -[Stephanie] Yeah.
So right now our priority is to get a fire going
and hunker down for the night.
Uh, as time progresses...
...night draws nearer.
Getting the fire going before that is very crucial.
[Shawn] I'm just cutting shorter pieces
that I'm laying crossword here as a bed mattress.
-Well, that's looking like a bed, hey? -[Noa] Yeah, it is.
[Shawn] And then we're gonna run that bug net just over us.
We're not gonna let bugs get in and out.
Oh, we're gonna be so cozy tonight.
[Noa] That's awesome.
It's not a bad life.
No, it's not bad. Could be so much worse.
-It really could. -It could be so much better.
-But-- -[laughing]
[laughing echo continues]
[Stephanie] Hopefully, this fire keep the bugs away tonight.
[Julian burps]
-Sorry. -[Stephanie] It's okay.
Why don't you, um,
-Why don't you go in the water? -[burps]
-No? -[retches]
[Stephanie speaking]
[retches]
[retching continues]
[Julian groans]
[retching]
[groans]
-Okay. Feel better. -[Stephanie] Take your time.
Sorry for not holding it and spewing chunks right here.
It's fine.
[Julian] Truthfully, I could not tell you the last time I threw up.
Yeah, that's crazy.
[Shawn] Thank God for this bug tent.
It's really secure.
-It keeps the bugs out, right? -[Noa] Yeah, yeah.
We're doing just fine.
-We're doing just fine. -Yep.
We're doing better than fine.
[Shawn speaking]
[Julian speaking]
[Stephanie speaking]
[Julian speaking]
[Stephanie] Oh, [bleep], man.
[groans]
[Julian] Holy [bleep].
That was a big boy.
[Stephanie] Oh, Goddamn.
[groans]
[Julian speaking]
[Stephanie groans]
[groans]
I'm not gonna lie. Last night was rough.
I was like, I was just getting annihilated by mosquitoes.
These are the guys that worked their way underneath the edge of the net
last night and slept with us.
[Stephanie] Tore us up.
Our bodies already have hundreds of mosquito bites.
It's miserable.
Definitely almost took me out.
Coming out here on this challenge was really important to me to show my dad
that, you know, I am strong. I want to make him proud.
And I want him to look at me and say...
[sniffles]
..."She's tough."
[Shawn] We had such an amazing sleep last night, hey?
-[Noa] Yeah, we did. -That was insane.
There were no bugs. Thank God for the bug net.
Feeling good.
Looking good.
-We got this. -[Noa] Yeah, we do.
I think the priority for me is, like, I'd like to get coverage.
-[Shawn] Coverage. -Mmm-hmm.
[Shawn] Perfect.
[Noa] Made it through night one.
But I don't think that we're super well set up
for lots of rain at the moment.
We need to get some palms to reinforce our shelter.
-[Shawn] Yeah. -[Noa] Cool.
Noa and I are really beginning to learn how to communicate and work together.
She has great ideas, great suggestions.
Honestly, I couldn't ask for a better partner.
Here, piggy, piggy.
Hopefully, this thick, nasty mud will help.
I have never put mud all over my body like this before.
[Julian] The entire crux of this challenge
will be our ability to deal with and accept the reality
that we are going to have thousands of mosquito neighbors
-for the next three weeks. -[Stephanie] Every day.
Mosquitoes can break big dogs real quick.
Much better.
[Stephanie] Not too short.
-[Julian] That one's too short. -Yeah.
-A lot of them are. -[Shawn] Okay. So we'll make them longer.
Is this the right length?
That one looks good. I'll try it.
[Shawn] Stephanie has a lot of wherewithal when it comes to the outdoors,
and she does have experience knowing how to build shelter more efficiently than I can.
Oh, that's a good Y branch.
Just chop those two off. Leave about... Yeah.
Perfect. Yeah.
I just want to have a good night.
I don't want to feel what I felt last night.
It was so rough.
We need more. Lots more of these.
-[Noa] Okay. -[Shawn] Please and thank you.
I think the partnership with Shawn is going pretty well so far.
And I also feel really connected to the land.
It's so beautiful, though.
And lots of mosquitoes to hang out with, too.
But I'm definitely feeling the hunger starting to set in in my body.
Yeah.
Oh!
There's a tarantula.
Okay. Just...
I'm sorry, buddy.
[squeals]
Okay.
Okay.
I know it's a crazy thing that I'm about... we're gonna eat you.
Never had tarantula before, and get a little protein maybe.
I'm sorry, buddy.
Shawn, I got us a snack.
-[Shawn] You did not. -[Noa] Look at him.
-Oh, wow. -[Noa] Isn't that cool?
I've never had tarantula before.
Neither have I. That is fantastic.
-Nice job. -Yeah.
-Yeah. -Jeez.
-Rotisserie. -I think... yeah.
-You do know what those red furs? -Yeah.
They all have to be burned off
-'cause that's the poison, right? -[Noa] Okay.
Good job finding that. That's impressive.
And we're only gonna be getting in the bigger bigger game when we're ready.
[Noa] How long do you think we should cook it for?
[Shawn] Oh, I'd say at least 15 minutes.
[Noa] It's boiling.
Wanna check it out.
[Shawn] Oh, wow.
-Yeah, we're done. -[Noa] Yeah.
It's charcoal. Good job.
-[Noa] Yeah. Yeah. -You want to grab one?
Yeah.
Oh, that's excellent.
-You really need to go find a bunch more of those. -A bunch more of these.
-[laughing] -Okay.
[Shawn] Kind of tastes like chestnut.
-Wanna share the head? -Mmm-hmm.
The head's excellent.
Mmm.
Wow. It's actually quite lovely.
-[Shawn] Yeah. Nice white meat. -Yeah.
-Who knew? -Well, that's it, hey?
I feel better already.
Noa, finding food is amazing.
-I think you did great. -[Noa] Mmm.
You got it.
[Stephanie] Tonight is our first bug-free night.
We finally have our skeeta net secured over our shelter.
And it's helping a lot.
There's not any mosquitoes that are getting in,
so super awesome win for us
that we are able to have a good area that we can sleep
and, uh, yeah.
Very grateful for that.
Okay. Night two in the books. We're here on day three.
Actually got some excellent sleep.
The shelter held up wonderfully.
Mosquito net did its job.
The goal for this morning is to see if we can put some food in today.
[Stephanie] And some protein.
Definitely feeling the effects of being hungry, for sure.
That's definitely driving us to go a little bit outside of the shelter area.
This water...
...is a little scary.
Gotta keep your eyes out for snakes,
or anything that might be in here.
I mean, there could be a caiman crocodile.
Something slipping here, so...
It's really important to check your surroundings.
Crazy out here.
-Do you see any frogs or anything? -[Julian] No.
[Stephanie speaking]
-[Julian] We can toss them on the roof. -[Stephanie] Yes.
I think there's a frog in here.
[vocalizes]
Did I get him?
There was a frog right here.
You know, I have no idea where it went.
Must have jumped as soon as I hit.
Dang it. I think he got away.
[Julian exhaling]
-Whoo. -What was that?
Go!
-[bleep] What? What? What? What? -[bleep]
[Julian] Go! [bleep]
-[Stephanie] What? What? What? What? -[bleep]
-What happened? -Wasp.
-[Stephanie] Are you okay? -[Julian] Yeah.
-[Stephanie] Where'd it get you? -In the face, on the wrist.
I think there were a few. It was like a nest.
Just got in some kind of wasp nest.
I got whacked a couple of times.
I took one here to the temple.
I got one here on my wrist.
And I chucked my knife.
What a stupid ass. Who throws their knife?
-[Stephanie] Oh. -What a frantic move.
Goddamn! Oh, there she is.
Found the knife.
The stings don't hurt anymore.
We'll be more cognizant of them in the future.
[Stephanie]I love Mexico.
[Noa] I'm feeling pretty drained.
I started bleeding this morning.
[sighs]
It's really uncomfortable.
Is there anything I can do for you?
-No. You're doing exactly it. -Oh.
-Thank you so much. -You're welcome.
I'm here if you need anything.
[sniffles]
[Shawn] I think my partner's experiencing that time of the month.
I'm just trying to give her a little bit of space.
I've raised three girls.
I still haven't got them figured out.
[Noa] Pretty vulnerable.
Just struggling like this.
[crying] This is really hard.
[crying] Today is really hard.
[Shawn speaking]
I'll go three quarters of an inch.
Make our diamonds small.
You know, my partner's struggling and,
my brother Chad crosses my mind.
I can imagine how my brother felt.
You're feeling all these emotions.
You're feeling torn down.
You're feeling beat up.
We're struggling with the lack of nutrition in a place like this.
I mean, it's literally like the devil's den.
It's like your soul is being sucked right out of your body.
[Noa] I'm still feeling pretty exhausted, but it feels more important
to focus my energy on finding ways that I can contribute as well.
So I'm making this fish trap and hoping that'll be helpful
for us to get some food going.
It's so simple.
We both just need food.
[Stephanie] I feel so weak today. It's crazy.
Very, uh...
...brain foggy,
I can't wait to eat.
We haven't had protein in a long time and my body feels it.
But I'm hoping we can get some protein soon.
I'm ready for anything. I don't even care.
Oh, my God.
[Julian laughing]
-[bleep] -[Stephanie] Biting me.
-[Julian] Mind the head. Good job, dude. -Whoo.
-Oh. -[Julian] Dude.
This is food. This is a game changer. This is a win.
-Yes. -Thank you, buddy.
Sorry. Goodbye.
[Stephanie] It feels really good to have gotten a lizard.
I am so stoked that I am able to provide some protein
for me and Julian. Yay!
I've been really hungry.
So this is just a major win for us.
Toes and all.
[Julian] I'm plating it the way you would see
a lobster plated at a nice restaurant.
Gordon Ramsay would be proud.
I would say all the meat on this lizard calorically
is about the same as a strip or two of bacon.
Enjoy your dinner.
I know everything tastes like chicken, but it tastes like chicken.
-[Julian] That's good, dude. -Lizard tail.
That's really good.
I think I'm gonna go nuts here and eat the brain, too.
And the eyes.
The initial plan was going to be to eat the tongue
and some of the connective tissue around the neck and the base.
But it's probably just easier if we did this.
[Stephanie] Oh, my God. That's crazy as hell.
It's calories, man.
[Stephanie speaking]
[Shawn] If we can get that trap in the water tonight,
I think that could change everything.
-You did a really good job with that. -[Noa] Aw, thank you.
[Shawn] I can't stop looking at it.
It looks great.
-We're gonna park it right here... -[Noa] Cool.
...'cause it's close to the overhang.
-And it's also parked out here in the open. -Okay.
[Shawn] I'll just drop it in.
-[Noa] Okay. -[Shawn] Perfect.
We're gonna be eating like kings and queens.
-Everything that moves dies. -[Shawn] Yep.
Today we need this to happen, Noa.
-Yeah. -[Shawn] There's no making friends today.
Everything dies.
[Noa] All I think about is food.
All I think about is food.
-Okay. I'm gonna go check the fish trap. -[Shawn] Okay.
โช Everything that moves needs to be food โช
โช Hey, little jungle โช
โช Some food would be good โช
Fish trap.
Nope.
Just want the jungle to know that it would be really helpful...
...if you all had some food to offer.
I'm looking for animals like lizards, or...
...frogs hopping along,
and looking around to see if there's anything we can eat.
Oh, [bleep].
-Hey, Shawn? -[Shawn] I'm coming!
-There's a snake. -[Shawn] I'm coming!
I'm on my way.
-What is it? -[Noa] It looks like a coral snake.
[Shawn] I don't believe it.
I should have grabbed the knife.
-[Noa] Okay, I can run back and get it. -[Shawn] Is it on the ground?
[Noa] It's right there behind these trees.
See... you can see the stripes around the tree.
-[Shawn] Okay, I see it. -[Noa] Mmm-hmm.
-[Shawn] Got it. -[Noa] You got it.
-Okay. -Yeah, go get the knife.
Okay, I'm gonna get the knife.
[Shawn] Hurry up.
[Noa] I'm hurrying, man.
Running.
[Shawn groans] Hurry up!
Hurry up! I need another weapon.
All right. You got it?
-Give me your weapon. -[Noa] Okay.
[Shawn] Oh, okay.
Okay. That was a kill shot.
[grunts]
No. No.
No. No. I stabbed you.
[groans]
I penetrated you. Stand back.
[bleep]
[Shawn grunts] Man. No. No.
No!
I penetrated you. Stand back.
[bleep]
[sighs]
Oh, [bleep] off, already.
Goddamn it!
We had it.
[Noa] I know. It sucks.
[sighs] [bleep]
[grunts] [bleep]
I could have easily just cut the tail off,
but the tail wouldn't have killed it.
-[Noa] Yeah. -The rest of it was embedded in the ground.
[Noa] Yeah.
If this didn't break...
...we'd be having snake right now.
So yeah, I'm... I'm pretty pissed off.
God, these things are just crazy.
-Oh, my God. -Yeah, that really sucks.
Oh, it's so hard.
I just want food.
Oh, man, come here, partner.
-Yeah. -Oh, my God,
Please, God, please don't let it rain.
[thunder rumbling]
[Noa] Oh.
It's really cloudy. It's really dark.
I'm thinking we're in for some nasty weather.
[Julian] We got ourselves a rainstorm.
Oh, man, it's coming for real now,
[Stephanie speaking]
Oh, [bleep].
We're gonna get wet tonight.
Here we are.
[Stephanie speaking]
[Julian] Wet an cold is not a fun combination.
[Stephanie speaking]
[Julian speaking]
[Stephanie speaking]
[Julian] Oh, God.
This is crazy.
There's no end to it, hey.
It just keeps going, just keeps going.
[Julian speaking]
[Shawn] Well...
...that was a rough night.
[Noa] Yeah.
Cold and wet.
To be cold and be rained on,
without any clothing.
And to not be eating,
especially with the merge coming up.
It's a lot of stress on the body.
I'm so hungry.
I've never been this hungry in my life.
[Shawn] We have to start getting some protein into us.
-I mean, we can't go like this the whole time. -Mmm-hmm, yeah.
-It's not sustainable. -Yeah.
-Totally. -Right?
I'm gonna scavenge, look around.
If I see something, bigger, I'll kill it.
If I see something smaller, I'll kill it, too.
Hopefully, there's more movement
of little animals and reptiles after that rainfall.
I'm trying to look for snakes, scorpions...
...something to eat.
Oh, [bleep].
[frog croaking]
We got frog.
We just found a meal.
I'm gonna go surprise Noa.
As soon as I get this frog, my heart racing.
All I can think about is Noa is gonna be so excited.
Hey, Noah?
Did you want to get that fire going again sooner than later?
[Noa] I can.
-Do you know why? -Whoo! [laughs]
Aw.
-That's a big one. -[Shawn] Yes, it is.
-Oh. -Oh.
We got something.
[Shawn speaking]
For me and my partner to feel some protein, to finally cook some meat.
I think this is an absolute game changer for her and I.
We're going to cherish this moment.
We haven't had much nutrients,
so finally, providing for Noa and I, I'm on cloud nine.
And I've got this permanent smile on my face here.
[Noa] Aw.
That's really cute.
I think I'm gonna cry.
It's gonna taste amazing, hey?
Cheers.
I'm gonna take my time.
Mmm-hmm.
Oh, wow.
-[laughs] -Mmm.
These are the best moments.
Oh, my God.
Mmm.
It's so good.
[laughs]
It's like the best barbecue.
-Right? -[Noa] Mmm-hmm.
-[Shawn] Try its back straps. -Back straps.
[Shawn] The fact that we're merging tomorrow
and we have some food to eat tonight...
...it changes everything.
That was delicious.
Yeah, it was.
[Stephanie] We did not get any sleep last night.
Um, the rain was so bad, we got soaking wet.
And then it was cold all night.
So all night we laid here and shivered.
It was just miserable.
I don't want to have to go through that again.
All right. Just get this fire lit.
-I'll start chopping wood. -Okay.
[Julian speaking]
[Stephanie] Tomorrow is going to be merge day.
I'm hoping we can move to a better location.
This location is bare.
We haven't eaten and we're starving.
I didn't ever imagine that it would be this bad.
I'm just trying to deal with it as best as I can.
[Julian] [bleep]
Goddamn it.
Uh, oh, that's not good. That's not good.
That's not good. That's not good.
[Shawn] Goddamn it.
Guys, I want the medic down here now, please.
Guys, I need the medic down here ASAP, please.
-What's going on, man? -Yeah, I was working a piece of wood,
and it just peeled my left thumb off.
-Hand down. -Okay.
-Okay. Okay. -Whoa. Whoa. Whoa.
Hey, put it back. Put it back. Put it back. You're gonna ruin it.
Keep it on there, brother.
It just fileted my entire fingerprint off.
I could potentially be taken out of this challenge right now.
[groans]
Damn, dude. [bleep]
[Brenda speaking]
I've taken the fingertip off of my thumb.
-[Brenda speaking] -Mmm-hmm.
I've never cut myself that bad.
[Stephanie] I see the blood dripping out of Julian's finger.
It looks terrible.
I would be devastated if Julian got a medical tap
and had to leave the challenge.
[Brenda speaking]
-[Julian] I know. -[Brenda] Okay.
-Okay. -[Brenda] Really, really thin.
[Julian] Damn!
[narrator] Due to the nature of the cut and its location on the tip of the thumb,
stitches are not an option.
[Julian] The second it happened, I knew it was a serious cut.
What an idiot.
[narrator] Instead, the medic will apply a tight compression bandage.
[Brenda] The risk to get an infection is real
because we are in a place where it's not clean.
[Noa] It's Day 11, and it's the day of the merge.
So excited to get out of here.
Yeah, so it looks like we're going to be going north.
It almost looks like a marshy little area, but just above it.
We have a big water hole.
-[Noa] Totally. -[Shawn] We're gonna hopefully find a place
where we can manage to find more food and better water.
[Julian] So it's moving day.
How's your thumb feeling?
[Julian] It doesn't hurt. I'm just being delicate with it.
I can assure you it'll be a non-factor
in any of the workload or anything we have to do
-moving forward, so... -Yeah.
We have a long trek
with basically no calories,
um, and I haven't eaten in days.
It's going to be really tough for me.
I'm trying to do my best. I'm trying to keep a good attitude.
I just don't feel good.
Time to tear camp down and time to get the hell out of here.
Start pulling off the palm leaves. You can toss them over here.
It's gonna be quite the hike.
It's gonna be quite the load.
It's gonna be quite the adventure.
We're gonna go nice and slow. If you need to sit down,
you need to chill, you need to hydrate, we'll do that, no problem.
You set the pace.
-Don't blow yourself out. -Okay.
-Straight north, yep. -Straight north from here.
See you later, [bleep] hole.
Goodbye, home.
Eleven days at this spot.
Ten days to go.
[narrator] To reach their merge location,
both teams must head north and navigate
over three miles through the dense jungle
covered with thorns and jagged limestone terrain,
before reaching a body of water called the "cenote."
"Cenotes" are sinkholes,
caused by collapsed limestone bedrock.
The term is native to the Yucatan Peninsula,
where the Mayans believed they were portals to the underworld,
and relied on them for fresh water
as well as human sacrifice.
There, the four survivalists will come together
for the remainder of the challenge.
[exhales]
Boy, that sun is hot.
It's got to be 90-plus degrees out here today.
My brother, Chad, never made it to the merge.
He was a day short.
It overwhelms me that I'm gonna be moving forward.
I'm going to be able to meet, uh, my new partners.
Eleven days in and...
not a lot of food.
That makes this hike next to unbearable.
[Julian] Remember to watch where you're stepping.
[Stephanie] Yeah.
There could be some nasty stuff you don't wanna step on,
snakes, spiders, tarantulas.
Careful. There's thorns over here.
[Stephanie] I'm feeling tired.
My heart's racing.
[Julian] Hmm.
[Stephanie] I don't know.
[Julian] I don't know where the [bleep] I am. I'm twisted up.
Which way are we going up here?
[Stephanie] Um...
[Julian speaking]
I think the left.
I wanna keep pushing that way.
-[Shawn] Ready? -[Noa] Hold on.
[breathing heavily]
[Shawn] We're already weak, we're vulnerable,
hungry, thirsty.
You have to watch the terrain.
You've got the jungle just waiting...
for you to hit the ground.
And they're gonna make a meal out of you, I promise you.
This is insanely tough.
This journey is enough to [bleep] anybody up,
even some of the best.
[Stephanie] I'm just not feeling well.
[Julian] Sip some water? Here.
One step at a time.
Stephanie is struggling out here,
so I'm doing my best to try to motivate her,
to keep her spirits up,
keep her in the game,
to get her over the hump.
You're good.
[Stephanie] Jesus Christ.
[bleeping]
Is anyone home?
[Stephanie] Hello?
It looks like the other campsite.
I think they might have migrated too.
Goddamn it!
We should have taken the other route.
[narrator] Julian and Stephanie have unknowingly veered
a half mile off their intended course,
and remain three miles from the merge point
of the large cenote.
[sighs in relief]
[Julian] You just need to sit for a sec?
I'm just hot and...
I'm just not feeling good.
There's a lot to go.
[sniffles]
And I feel like I'm not going to be able to do it.
[sniffles]
And I hate saying that.
That's one of the things my dad said, is I was too soft.
But I feel like I'm suffering,
and I'd rather not
put myself through... [exhales] that.
[sobbing]
This is... this is just hell.
[Stephanie] I'm just not feeling good.
[narrator] On their way to the merge location,
Julian and Stephanie have unknowingly veered a half mile off course.
[Julian] Sip some water.
We'll take five.
[sighs softly] Yeah.
Thank you.
[Julian] Stephanie has been expressing that she feels like tapping.
I need to reel her back in from... from the edge.
Find excuses to win, baby. Find excuses to win.
[Shawn] Oh, my Lord.
I'm tired of walking.
It's a long, hot, wet...
bug-terrained area.
[groans]
Oh, my God. I see it, Noa.
-[Noa] Do you see it? -[Shawn] I see it.
-[Noa chuckles] -[Shawn sighing] Oh!
-[chuckling] -[Noa] Oh, my God!
It's beautiful!
I haven't even seen it all yet.
[Shawn] It's beyond beautiful.
-[Noa] Wow! -[Shawn] You're not gonna believe this, Noa.
-Beautiful. -This is so much different from our other spot.
-Oh! [laughs] -And you can feel a breeze.
Can you feel that wind?
Oh!
-[Shawn] We made it. -Wow.
Oh, wow! There's crocodiles in this water.
[narrator] Mexican crocodiles can be found
in freshwater habitats
along the Gulf of Mexico,
and are capable of overpowering
and killing a human.
The Mayans believed that a great crocodile
was slain by the Gods
in order to create the surface of the Earth,
and that its spirit still lurks in the dark waters
waiting for revenge.
-[Shawn] There's a lot to consider here. -[Noa] Yeah.
We're supposed to be... meeting up with the others.
I don't see anyone.
Where are they?
Hello!
Is there anybody out there?
[Noa] We knew that we were supposed to merge with two other folks.
We don't know if they're on their way
or if they tapped out...
-so... -I guess time will tell.
...time will tell.
[Julian] How're you doing?
[Stephanie] I'm starving,
I'm just trying to focus on getting there.
We may have walked for a long time.
It feels like I pulled myself out of the pits of hell.
However, if it's gonna continue to be an issue getting food,
then I'm just not staying.
Burning energy right now.
[Julian] One step at a time.
I'm very hungry,
and so is Stephanie.
Energy is low.
The look of these palms, dude...
These would be some nice roof shingles...
-[Stephanie] Ugh. -[Julian]...and some good bedding.
[Stephanie] Palm trees grow near a cenote.
[Noa] I think maybe we might wanna shelter here.
You wanna set up this fish trap,
so we don't have to carry it anymore?
I think that's a great idea. And it's even baited.
[in sing-song voice] Me and Shawn made it to the lagoon.
[chuckles]
-We made it to a much better water resource. -Finally.
And the water looks clear.
I could see right near the bottom.
-[Noa] Yee! -[Shawn] Lots of minnows.
There's got to be fish in here.
[Noa] Yeah, me, too.
[Shawn] Hopefully, we can catch some food,
maybe some fish, maybe some meat.
[Noa] Cool.
-All right, you ready? -[Noa] Let's do it.
I feel...
energized, oddly,
even though I don't feel like I've had much...
to eat recently.
-But... it feels like... -[water splashing underfoot]
...there's new hope in the world.
[Shawn] Is that the right way?
[Noa] Yeah, I believe so.
Oh, yeah, and then we're back on land over here.
[Julian] I can hear a woman's voice.
[Noa] It seems like this is the drier area.
Yeah, it is.
You think we can, like, camp here?
[Noa] Who's here?
Hello?
[Julian and Stephanie] Hello?
-Yo! -[Shawn laughs]
You guys the neighbors?
-[Noa] Oh, my God! -[Stephanie screams]
-[Shawn] What is this? -Dude.
-Are you serious? -[Noa yelling] What?
-We were like, "They're not coming." -[Shawn] Yeah.
-[Noa] What? -[Shawn] It's something else.
-There's other people out here. -[Stephanie] Hey, guys.
-Who would've thought, huh? -Oh, my God!
-I know. We thought the same thing. -Hey, you guys.
-What's up, bro? -Shawn.
-[Noa gasps] -Nice to meet you, Shawn. Julian.
-Julian? Nice to meet you. -Noa.
-Hi, Noa. Julian. -[Julian and Stephanie] Nice to meet you.
-You are? -I'm Stephanie.
-Nice to meet you. -Stephanie. Shawn. Nice to meet you.
-Hi. Nice to meet you. -I'm Noa. Nice to meet you.
-Wow. This is awesome. -[Stephanie] I know.
This is absolutely a miracle.
[Julian] And we're glad to see you guys are still in there, huh?
-Yeah. -Oh, yeah. We were thinking
-that you guys might have backed out. -[Julian] Dude...
we've been hanging in there.
-Here's a question. Have you guys been eating? -[Noa] Frogs.
-Yeah? -[Shawn] Yeah, a little bit.
Uh, what else have we been eating?
-[Noa] Tarantulas. -Tarantulas.
We've been, uh... we've been kind of doing The Hunger Games, an.
The net... uh, the trap she made, Noa made
-a nice fishing track. -[Noa] Yeah, a fishing trap in the water.
It's already in there.
We've got some line and some hooks,
-and we've got, uh, a nice knife as well. -We've got fishing hooks...
-[Noa] Okay. Cool. -...and it's a fishing line.
I'm happy there are some new survivors
to chit chat with, um...
and hopefully, some good fishing spots.
So I'm feeling hopeful.
We were gonna set a small base camp here,
but now that you guys are here,
there's four of us,
we can now grab vines.
You guys have a mosquito net?
-Yeah, you got some right there. -Yeah, we've got one.
[Julian] We got one as well.
Is that right, eh?
-Are you Canadian? -[Shawn] Yeah.
-[laughs] -[Noa] I'm from Ashville.
-[Stephanie] Ashville? -Sudbury, Canada, Ontario, not far from Toronto.
[Julian] I love that our team has a Canadian.
Thank God.
Goal for today,
work on the shelter.
[Shawn] So here's what I was thinking,
if now that you guys are here, you see this?
We can use our tie point for our lean-to on that tree
all the way to this tree.
And if we had that, then we could just send poles
directly out that way.
Okay, let's hold it. All three of you
wanna maybe have your hands up there
-just until I get it tied off. -Yeah, sounds good.
[Shawn sighs]
Hold it right there.
[Julian] It's so nice having a dude partner.
And this is nothing against Steph. She's a beautiful person.
But Shawn seems like...
an absolute wealth of knowledge.
He seems like a very pleasant person.
I think, once we get the system going,
we're gonna thrive out here.
[Shawn] Drop her down.
-Okay? -Beautiful.
[sighs] Nice work, guys.
-Nice work, buddy. -Good job.
Julian, he reminds me, uh...
of my younger brother.
He's full of spunk.
He's just a young guy in his 20s,
but, uh, built, so I'm gonna use his...
his muscle to our advantage.
-[Stephanie speaking] -I know. I know.
-[Stephanie chuckling] I'm like... -[Noa] I am, too.
[Stephanie] Oh, my God!
I am so happy that there is another female out here.
It definitely gave me a boost.
And I'm trying to pull from some inner strength somewhere
to keep on grinning and bearing it.
[Noa] All right, so palms...
I feel like we're gonna be able to accomplish a lot with all four of us.
If it was just me and Steph,
our shelter would probably be simpler,
and so I'm thankful for the men that are out here
that have the energy to do some of the heavier lifting.
[Julian] Collecting trees, which are going to act
as the support poles...
for the roof on our lean-to.
[Shawn] Well, here we are. We are in our gazebos.
-We have a nice floor mat. -[Noa] Mmm-hmm.
-[Julian] A bunch of palms. -[Shawn] Yeah, a bunch of palms.
It looks good.
[Noa] Hello?
To gazebos.
-[Julian] Rest on your back. -We did it. We're here.
How about that?
[bleep], we're so glad today is over with.
What's tomorrow? Day 12?
Four people in, four people coming out...
You got it.
[Julian]...barring any unforeseen, horrible injuries
or acts of God.
[thunder rumbling]
-[Stephanie] Rain! -[Noa] Whoo!
[all laughing]
[Shawn laughing]
[all screaming]
[Shawn yelling]
It is...
-pouring! -[Stephanie chuckles]
-And it's cold. -[Julian] It is.
-[Stephanie groans] -It's... it's a bit nipply, isn't it?
[Shawn] Son of a bitch!
[thunder rumbling]
[Shawn] Last night, we just got rained on all night.
But, uh, here's our route...
and up to our lake...
hoping to catch a whole bunch of fish,
and bring home brekky.
I know we're not supposed to be out here alone
because of the crocs that are in this water.
Ugh, there's nothing in there.
I'm going to carry on.
We got our fishing nets.
Fast little bastards,
I'll give 'em that.
Patience is gonna be big here.
[Julian] It rained all night.
My fingers are so pruney.
It sucked. [chuckles]
[Julian] It was really cold.
-[Stephanie] That was the worst part-- -I run pretty hot, too,
and it was... it was cool.
All night long, it was just pissing, freezing rain,
and we didn't have a roof put up yet, so...
It was pretty rough just laying there, taking it.
I'm exhausted.
[Noa] So... today,
build up a raised platform for all of us to sleep on.
Get a roof on this baby,
so we don't have what happened last night again.
[Stephanie] Yeah.
-And then, we got fishing to do. -Yep.
My biggest hope in merging
is we can find food.
There's more sources for food,
bigger bodies of water that we can actively fish,
bring in some protein, um, because I feel like
that's really what is gonna give this challenge
a big step up, mentally and physically.
Shawn's still out there right now, um, going at it.
[Stephanie] Yeah. I hope he comes back with something.
-[Julian] That'd be nice. -That would be really nice.
-[Julian] That'd be nice. -[Stephanie] We haven't eaten in, like, seven days.
What has everybody been doing?
[Stephanie] Hey, Shawn.
-[Shawn] Well, hey. -[Noa] How'd it go?
I, uh, learned a few things.
[Stephanie] That's great.
[Shawn] We'll check the fish basket.
It still needs to be better baited,
maybe in a better area,
but for now...
good news is...
I did end up managing to catch four little ones.
-[screams] -[Stephanie] Oh, my God!
[Noa chuckling]
If you guys all... we can fry these up,
and have a little bit of protein.
We'll share it amongst ourselves there.
[Stephanie] All right. I'm so thankful.
Out here, it seems like the highs are really high.
I had the biggest adrenaline rush.
When you're out here starving,
and you get something like that,
it is just such a phenomenal feeling.
[Julian] We'll start working on a fire,
get them cooked up.
You want a victory.
At this point in the challenge, I haven't eaten much at all,
so I'm proud of Shawn getting back there and crushing it.
[Stephanie] Beautiful.
[Shawn] That fish, I had a sense that
it would boost the morale a little bit.
Everybody's hit a bit of a wall,
not resting enough, not eating enough.
[sighs in relief]
-Mmm. -[Stephanie] Mmm-mmm.
[chuckles]
It's, like, so good, too.
[Shawn] Yeah, it really is, isn't it?
[Stephanie] I am just absolutely delighted.
We got teary-eyed
because it was the first time I had actually
eaten something substantial in a very long time.
-That's the start of the beginning. -Yeah. Yeah.
It's knowing that we have food out there.
It may have been small,
but there were portions enough
just to have our mouths full.
-Promising. -Yeah.
-Promising. -That was good stuff, man.
Yeah, really.
[Stephanie] I am trying to cut vines,
so that we can put some leaves down, some palms...
and not get rained on.
[Shawn] We all want rest,
but we're not gonna get a good night rest
if we don't have a proper camp.
And if we can get four people, at the same time,
focused on the same mission...
to complete these tasks,
we could all be laying down right now,
drinking water, singing Kumbaya.
We'll be taking palm leaves...
-[Noa] Mmm-hmm. -[Shawn]...jamming 'em in between our...
-our strings. -[Noa] Cool. Cool, cool, cool.
[Shawn] One layer across the bottom, absolutely,
-and you work your way up. -Yes.
[Stephanie] I can tell that he is very much a go-getter.
I think that he likes to take charge,
and has the knowledge and skills to survive out here.
[groans] I just want this bed done.
[breathing heavily]
[Julian] We're chopping trees for our support beams for our elevated bed.
You dare put me in a situation
where there's manual labor to be done,
I'm ready to rock and roll.
[Shawn] Look at that beast. Holy [bleep].
Julian, I honestly don't know what I'd do without him.
That guy is not only a workhorse,
he'll also take it to the next level.
[Julian] All right!
I tell you what? I make this jungle [bleep] look good, baby.
Well, here we are, finally.
Finally...
we've got our shelter done here.
Great work with Julian cutting all that wood.
-[Noa] Whoo! -[Shawn] You're a damn machine.
Yeah, we finally got what we wanted, eh?
Our dream home.
-[Noa] Okay. -Dude, this is a badass shelter, man.
I'm feeling [bleep] good.
Yeah, it's good.
We're gonna sleep well tonight.
[Shawn] Where the [bleep] did that mosquito just come from? [bleep]
[Stephanie] And somehow there's mosquitoes in here.
Yeah. This is ridiculous.
We've got a hundred mosquitoes in here.
[Shawn] Well, where are they coming in from?
-[Julian] I don't know! -[Shawn] Dude, they're coming in from--
[Stephanie] Look... What's that?
[Shawn] Probably the ground here.
[Noa] There it is.
There is our hole.
Our holes are over here.
[Julian] I'm gonna put the open knife over here.
-Be careful. -[Noa] Okay.
-[Julian] I'll put the sheath... here. -[Noa] Okay.
Time to kill some mosquitoes.
[Julian] Yeah, let's go.
[Noa] Mosquito jail.
-[mosquito buzzing] -[Stephanie speaking]
[Shawn] Last night was hell.
We had mosquitoes coming up through the floor.
Again, everybody is now exhausted.
We did not sleep at all.
[Julian speaking]
Girl...
-[Noa] Hmm? -[Stephanie speaking]
[Julian] During the night, I started developing a real bad headache,
real bad back pain...
and neck pain.
[Shawn] So, Julian...
-you know, I'm also an ex-paramedic, right? -[Julian] Yep.
-Mind if I just look at you, bud? -[Julian] Please.
[Shawn] One thing I've learned from the military
working as a search and rescue technician is,
Mother Nature is quite dangerous.
Julian, and the way he worked yesterday in extreme heat,
and wasn't thinking,
"hydrate, hydrate, hydrate."
He doesn't look well right now.
Can I just check your temperature, bud?
Grab a seat. Grab a seat.
No need to get up.
I'm gonna do it out here.
Dude...
Oh, buddy, buddy, buddy, you need to be dipping.
-You gotta cool that down. -[Julian] Yep, yep.
Your pulse is well over a hundred, bud.
Yeah.
Yeah, you're doing two a second right now, okay?
[Julian] I'm not leaving this jungle until day 21.
And I don't want someone to say,
"He's sick. He has to go."
[Shawn] You have to bring that temperature down.
We don't have the nutrition out here,
that's going to help bring you back up with the electrolytes.
[narrator] Concerned with Julian's condition,
the field medic is sent in to assess the situation.
[Julian] Hello.
-Headache, body aches, fever. -[Maria] Since when?
Since last night.
It started in the middle of the night.
My lower back is very tight and just feel, feel sore.
-[Maria speaking] -[Julian] Please do.
[Stephanie] Julian is just generally unwell.
I did start this challenge with him.
It's hard to see him struggling.
[Maria speaking]
[Noa] I'm feeling really tense and really stressed out.
It would really suck to lose Julian.
It's 134/94.
-One hundred eleven on pulse. -Okay.
[Shawn] One hundred eleven, yeah, figured you were over 100.
[thermometer beeps]
-Here, 101.5. -[Maria] 101, mmm-hmm.
-That's a little toasty. -[Maria] Yeah.
[Julian] Five years ago,
I was denied my life's dream of joining the army.
I was medically disqualified
because of an irregular heartbeat.
This challenge
is one of the hardest things I could consider
undertaking as a civilian
that would force me to dig deep
in a way that I could be proud of.
If I have to lay in that shelter,
hallucinating in a fever for the next six days,
that's exactly what I'm gonna do.
I'm not leaving this jungle until day 21.
[Maria speaking]
-[bleep] dengue. -[Noa] What is that?
[Julian] It's like malaria's little cousin.
-[Noa] How do you get it? -[Julian] Mosquitoes.
[narrator] Dengue fever is a mosquito borne illness
that causes flu-like symptoms.
In severe cases,
it can lead to internal bleeding,
organ damage, shock and even death.
Yeah, you should drink a lot of water,
you should try to take some rest.
[sighs]
[Maria] I'm gonna be back to check your vital signs.
-Thank you. -[Maria] You're welcome.
[Julian] Dude, I'm gonna go swim.
[Shawn] Just keep that core down.
I'd soak longer than thirty minutes.
Takes roughly an hour or longer
for a core temperature to change up to almost one degree.
Okay?
[Maria] So, it might be, like, a heat shock.
-[Kat] Okay? Okay. -Or it can also be dengue.
Both, uh, pathologies have, uh, dehydration in common.
-We need to keep watching him and see how it evolves. -Sure. Okay.
[narrator] Julian will be closely monitored,
and removed from the challenge if his symptoms worsen.
[Shawn] I'm not gonna be pleased if he goes home.
[Stephanie] He's not going home.
[Shawn] We're so close, guys. So close.
I need something to eat.
[Stephanie] And it's a good time to go out and fish right now.
-It's a very good time. -[Noa] Yeah, looks like it.
[Julian speaking]
[Shawn] Julian, right now, he's still out for the count.
Noa is going to take care of him.
Okay. You ready?
So, Steph and I, we're gonna go try our, our fishing net.
-Let's check that trap. -[Stephanie] Yep.
-Go check it. -[Shawn] I got your back.
-But we'll keep our eye open for crocs. -[Stephanie] Okay.
[Shawn] You definitely don't wanna get bit by one of those.
See anything?
[Stephanie] Nope.
[Shawn] Okay, let's toss her back in.
We don't have a lot of bait.
Try scoring minnows.
We get minnows, we have food.
We get minnows,
we can hopefully score some bigger fish.
As far as, uh, Julian goes,
he's experiencing all these symptoms.
I'm worried about the next couple of days.
The lack of nourishment doesn't really help
calm the body down.
So, I'm, uh, working twice as hard,
just trying to provide for all of us.
-[Stephanie] Have some water. -[Julian] Thank you.
[Stephanie] And drink up some.
Oh, in a couple minutes.
-[Stephanie] Okay. -[Julian] Thank you.
-[Stephanie] Uh... Yeah. -[Julian] Appreciate it.
[Noa] We're all fatigued from not eating very much.
I think we're all pretty equal with the exception of Julian,
who's really struggling.
We just need food.
[Shawn] Make sure you check the ground
for berries that might've landed
so we can look up and...
something that might even be riper.
These last few days fishing, catch nothing at all.
Am I annoyed with that? Absolutely.
Really, really hoping to see what we're looking for.
I'm willing to eat anything.
[Stephanie] Shawn and I decided to walk around,
just trying to forage for any kind of berries,
anything that might be edible
so that we can bring back and share.
[Shawn] What is that?
-[Stephanie] What is it? -[Shawn] It's an egg.
-[Stephanie] What? -[Shawn] It's an egg.
Oh, my God, it's a full egg.
-[Stephanie] Oh, my God. -[Shawn] Where did that come from?
Is there a nest?
[Stephanie] Looks like it's been there a while.
Look at that little swamp juice on it.
[Shawn] We're gonna boil it.
I'm really excited.
This is a... a win.
We finally get to eat.
These small little portions of protein,
that's a good score for everybody.
[Noa] Hey, that's a large egg.
-[Shawn] It's a large egg. -[Noa] Looks like it's very lightweight and floating.
-But I hope it-- I hope it's a win. -[Shawn] Yeah. Yep.
[explodes]
Oh, that egg just blew up.
-[Julian] You all right? -[Shawn] Yeah. How about that?
Let's check that out.
Look at that, it's all green.
Isn't that disgusting?
Yeah, so it doesn't look like we're gonna eat this one.
That's for sure.
[Stephanie] This is hard.
Like, I can't even provide food for myself. crying]
[sniffles]
That's one of the things my dad said, it's
"I don't wanna see you,
I don't wanna see you starving."
-[Shawn] Okay, let's do it. -[Stephanie] Let's do it.
[Shawn groans]
[Julian] Good luck, guys.
[Shawn] Right on, brother.
This is a life and death challenge of 21 days.
And you go without eating,
it makes it very, very difficult.
Very difficult.
Watch the lizards.
So, yeah, I'm worried about extraction
since I have a sense that Steph might be feeling the same way.
Are you up for walking a little bit further there, Steph?
[Stephanie] Yes.
[Shawn] Steph is no tapper. She's here to the finish line.
[Stephanie] There's a bird nest up there.
[Shawn] Holy [bleep].
-[Stephanie] See that? -[Shawn] Look at that.
Well, we hack it down and take a look in there.
[Stephanie] That's a lot of energy. It might be empty.
[Shawn] That bird nest is active at the top of that tree.
There's gonna be eggs in it.
I'm going in, okay?
[Stephanie] All right.
[Shawn] It's gonna come down this way.
Just be careful.
[chopping]
[Shawn] Haven't taken in a lot of protein,
very little, to be honest.
Not a lot of nutrients.
And you go without eating,
you get issues going on with your body function,
uh, your motor skills.
If this tree kicks out the other way, I need you to run.
Okay.
[Shawn] Here we go.
-You ready? -[Stephanie] Ready.
Here it comes.
Check the nest.
[Stephanie] I see it, I see it, I see it.
Anything in there?
[Julian] So, at this location,
there's a lot more ants than there were previously.
I don't like ants. I want ants off of me.
[Shawn] He's over there.
Oh, [bleep], dude.
-[bleep], ooh, [bleep]! -[Shawn] What happened?
[Julian] Ah, I just got nailed by a big one
[in Australian accent] right on the tip of me johnson.
-[Shawn] Was that an ant? -[Julian in normal voice] Yeah.
The big, like, half inch ones.
-Oh, dude! -[Shawn] Only you, buddy.
-Only you. -[Julian] Ugh.
[Stephanie] I like that you have an accent when that happened.
[Julian in Australian accent] Right on the tip of me johnson, eh?
[in normal voice] Yeah.
[inhales] Okay.
[Shawn] You took that like a man.
-Good job. -[Julian] Yeah.
As I pranced and danced and turned English.
-Oh, dude. -[Stephanie] Literally.
[Julian] Oh, why would you do that?
[Shawn] You gonna make it?
[Julian] I look like I have, like, multiple STDs.
I'm gonna be honest with you.
-[tree creaking] -[Shawn] Here it comes.
Check the nest.
[Stephanie] I see it, I see it, I see it.
Anything in there?
Food's been scarce,
so some egg yolk, that would be fantastic.
High in protein, high in calories.
-[Stephanie] No. -[Shawn] No?
[Stephanie] No. No eggs.
It looks like they were just trying to,
to build a nest.
[sighs wearily]
All right.
[Stephanie] It's disappointing to lose a potential food source.
My energy level is low.
I'm scared that maybe I don't have what it takes
to walk out during extraction.
[Shawn sighs]
It's too bad.
That's a kick.
A day away from extraction.
We have an excruciating walk tomorrow.
What I learned from my brother Chad being on this challenge
is, is, uh,
you're gonna definitely experience all enemies of survival.
And it looks like all four of us may experience the depths
of how dark things can get.
Definitely feeling this hunger
and the feeling honestly sucks.
[Stephanie groans]
[Shawn] I know, guys.
[Stephanie] Yes!
-[Shawn] What? -[Stephanie] Yes!
Yes!
-[Shawn] How did you do that? -[sighs in relief]
-Oh, yes. -[Shawn] How did you do that?
Steph!
I'm so goddamn proud of you.
-I got it, I got it. Come here. -My hands.
Oh, my God.
-You are outstanding. -[Stephanie] Oh, my God.
[Shawn] Nice job.
-Do you mind if I clean it up and get it ready? -Yeah. Go ahead.
[Shawn] Okay.
[Stephanie] Ooh! Oh, my God.
My hands are tingling.
That's, like, buck fever right there.
Oh, God.
-[Noa] Good job. -[Shawn gasps] Guys!
Look at this.
-[Julian] Nice! -[Shawn] Look at this.
-[Noa] That's wild. -[Julian] Holy [bleep].
[Shawn] There's more, there's more.
[Stephanie] Can we hard boil 'em this time?
[Shawn] There's more.
Got seven.
One more, we get two each.
-We got eight. -[Stephanie] Ah!
[Shawn] We got-- [laughs]
-[Noa] Awesome. -[Shawn] What a catch there, girl.
-Oh, my God. -[Noa] Good job, Steph.
-[Shawn] We got nine! -[Julian] Good job, baby.
[Shawn] We got nine.
[Noa] Oh.
Happy days.
[Shawn] I'm gonna let you go for it first there, Steph.
You wanna try an egg first
or you wanna get right to the meat?
[Stephanie] I'll get to the meat.
[Shawn] If we break the whole thing off,
we'll make sure there's enough more to go around.
Go ahead, buddy.
[Julian] No, like, get the girls fed first.
[Shawn] Right on. You pick a piece there, girl.
[Julian] What do you want?
[Shawn] I'll try this part.
-Yeah. -[Stephanie] Mmm.
Delicious.
-Oh, my God. -[Stephanie] Mmm.
[Shawn] Are you kidding me?
[Stephanie] Mmm. [chuckles]
[Julian] They're delicious.
[Shawn] We're having ham and eggs that Steph provided
and she caught it by hand.
She's an absolute badass.
It's exactly what we all need.
That was fantastic.
I feel the surge that I can go out and kill
a big goddamn dinosaur right now.
What about you, buddy?
-I'm still enjoying the meal. -Yeah.
[Julian] At the end of its final day of day 20.
One more sleep.
[Shawn] One more sleep for all of us.
Come tomorrow, we are all marching our asses out of here.
[Julian] Yes, sir.
[Stephanie] Yes, sir.
[Julian] And I believe I'll feel better tomorrow than I do today.
Godspeed, baby.
[Shawn] Godspeed.
Day 21.
-[Noa] Yeah, let's get going. -[Shawn] Let's get going.
[Stephanie] All right.
[Shawn] We all wanna cross the finish line,
and we're all gonna do our best.
I could be on my deathbed and I'll promise you this.
I'll be crawling my ass out of here.
Let's just take a look at that map.
-[Stephanie] All right. -[Shawn] It's, it's gonna be a hell of a walk, guys.
[Stephanie] Yep, here we are. Long way, but we can do it.
[narrator] To reach their extraction point,
the tribe must head northwest
through four miles of dense jungle,
watching out for deadly fer-de-lance
and coral snakes along the way
until they find a hidden road marked on their map
to meet their extraction vehicle.
[Shawn] Watch every footing.
Let's not step on anything that might be venomous.
We're not done yet.
[Julian] I've been ill, I'm weak, I'm tired.
I'm not firing at 100%.
This doesn't have to be pretty.
I just have to get there.
I wanna get back to the real world with drugs
with long, difficult-to-pronounce names on them.
Remember, guys, at the end of this walk
is everything we've been wanting.
This is the final bit of suffering we gotta endure.
[Noa] Physically, I feel pretty awful.
This feels similar to being sick.
Like, every footstep is tiring.
But we're so close to the end.
We're so close.
[Julian] All right, get skinny up here, guys.
It's getting thick.
[Shawn] Head on a swivel, guys.
We're so close.
[Julian] How we doing, guys?
[Stephanie] Physically, I am feeling drained.
Every step I take,
I'm just wanting to sit down and cry, honestly.
It is very tough.
I actually feel like I might throw up.
[Julian] Drink this, Steph.
I know you don't want to right now,
but I promised to give everybody a drink.
-Just finish the pot. Finish that. -[Noa] Yeah, dude.
Slam it to the face.
-Yeah. -[Shawn sighs]
It's not gonna do anything bad to you at all.
-Good girl. -[Noa] Dude.
[Stephanie groans]
-[Julian] Deep breaths. -[Stephanie] I know, but holy [bleep].
[Noa] But we're almost there.
-[Stephanie sighs] -[Shawn] I think, together as a team, uh,
we continue to push each other as best we can.
Four of us in, four of us out.
[Julian] I'm starting to lose fine motor function.
Walking straight is difficult.
With everything that I've gone through out here,
starvation, dehydration, heat,
a relentless onslaught of mosquitoes,
it's uncomfortable all around.
But we're on the home stretch.
I see a clearing.
[Noa] There's a [bleep] road.
[Julian] That's a [bleep] road, baby.
-[Stephanie] Is that our road? -[Julian] That's the road.
-[Noa] I think that's our road. -[Julian] It's a road.
[Stephanie] Thank God.
[Noa] Where's our ride, yeah?
-[Shawn] Where's our ride? -[Julian] Our ride...
[Shawn] That's a [bleep] car!
-[Noa] Yeah! -[Julian] Whoo!
[all exclaiming]
[Julian] I don't give a [bleep] if that's not our truck,
we're going on that [bleep] truck, man.
-[Noa] We're going home. -[Shawn] Congrats, bro.
-[Noa] Good job. -[Julian] It's tough, but... So proud of you.
-[Julian] I'm getting in. Let's get in. -[Stephanie] Whoo!
[Julian] What a view. Come on in.
[Noa laughs]
-Whoo! [laughs] -[Shawn] Grab a seat, guys.
[all howling]
[Shawn] We did it, guys.
-[Julian] And on the 21st day, they rested. -[Shawn] Yeah.
-That's it. -[Julian] We did it.
-It's done. -[Stephanie sighs in relief]
-We get to eat. We're gonna be in bed soon. -[Noa] Whoo!
[Julian] I'll never prove that I could've been a Green Beret,
but my discipline was tested,
my mindset was tested.
And ultimately, my mettle is hard.
Humbly, I'm a bad mother[bleep].
[narrator] After 21 days, Julian lost 32 pounds.
His primitive survival rating rises from 6.4 to 6.7.
[Noa] This was definitely one of the hardest things I've ever done.
And what it really taught me
was how to be more compassionate with myself
and others around me.
I feel like I moved through so much
in doubting myself
and have become a more confident
and empowered woman because of that.
[narrator] Noa lost 22 pounds
with a PSR that increased from 5.6 to 5.9.
-[Stephanie] It's over. -[Shawn laughs] It's over.
-[Noa] Whoo! -[Shawn] [bleep], it's over.
My dad said I was too soft for Naked And Afraid,
don't waste your time.
That got to me, of course, it hurts.
There were moments when I would tell myself, "I'm gonna quit."
There was just something inside of me that just kept me going.
I know that I'm a softie.
And that's okay, women can be soft.
But they can also be bad bitches too.
[narrator] Stephanie lost 21 pounds
and her final PSR increased from 6.2 to 6.8.
This feeling is so, so powerful.
And I can tell I'll be carrying this feeling
of finishing, uh, Naked And Afraid
for the rest of my life.
It's a huge accomplishment.
But for my brother Chad, uh,
I really do wish he had held on to the last 10 days,
because as hard as it's been,
it's been the greatest experience of my entire life.
[narrator] Shawn lost 23 pounds.
His PSR rose from 6.9 to 7.6.
Goodbye, Mexico, we are out of here.
[women] Adios.
[Stephanie] Bye!
[Shawn] There he is.
[Chad] You did the 21.
[both laugh]
Never doubted you for a second, man.
Yeah, I'm so glad to see you, bro.
-Look how you good you look, man, lean and mean. -Finally, oh, man.
Proud. Very proud, man. Goddamn.
