It became apparent, slowly but surely, there, like, there's a medical emergency,

it's in our end, uh, it's really, really serious.

It's gonna make or break our season.

This almost feel like a must-win

if we want automatic promotions,

and I think any Wrexham fan knows that playoffs are not our...

there's no question, it's massive. It is a classic six-pointer.

The three points that we gain, we take away from them.

Uh, and we are locked in this very tight battle for second with them,

with a few pesky other teams sort of peering over our shoulders

to be completely out of the race for-for automatic promotion,

and there's the opportunity for us to keep ourselves,

And he sent me a picture of the car.

I didn't believe it.

Literally, my heart just started racing.

And then I rang him straightaway and he answered.

I was like, "Are you hurt?"

And he was like, "I'm actually okay."

And I was like, "I don't... What? How are you okay? Like, how?"

So, I just jumped in the car and just went straight to Wrexham.

We were unsure if there was going to be

any delayed onset of any symptoms.

Had a full medical checkup of James.

A couple of small cuts and bruises and bumps,

but from an internal organ point of view, everything was structurally okay.

He literally came in and was like,

"I'm going training," and I was like,

"What? Whoa, hold on. Wait a minute."

Like, I was like, "Are you okay? Like, are you sure?"

And he was like, "I'm fine, I'm actually fine."

Defender misses it, Smith holds it up well.

McClean, left side of the area, onto his right foot, floats it back in.

because historically Wrexham has not had a good time in the playoffs.

We've got a three-point lead on Wycombe,

but with their game in hand, we know that they can get right back

in front of us at any time with their goal difference advantage.

I thought the mentality and the character

to-to play it in the spirit we did,

you know, exemplified what the group of lads are all about.

and-and particularly the supporter who'd been taken to hospital,

A match that put into perspective football as a sport.

I first started going to Wrexham games with my dad.

My earliest memory is that Dad would buy us a bag of sweets.

We would be told we weren't to tell Mum we had the sweets.

And we weren't to tell her the swear words we heard at the game.

The 15th of March was th-the hardest day of my life.

Massive, massive away day. It's a beautiful sunny day.

I live in New York, and, um, kickoff was at 11:00.

My husband was away, so I was by myself.

Before kickoff, I texted my dad, and he sent me a photograph.

First half went by, watching to see if I could see him.

So, then the second half kicked off.

It was about the 75th minute...

...and it was clear that there was something happening.

I think when they called the players off to the side,

the commentator said there's been a medical incident.

Looks like it's in the away end.

Something's not quite right.

So, that, sort of, in my head,

meant there's probably a thousand people in that section I can't see.

One in a thousand, it's not him.

And after ten minutes, I called him...

...and he didn't pick up.

I called him again and again. He didn't pick up.

Then I started to get really worried, and then it became

certain that it was... the person who'd had this incident

that had stopped the game for 40 minutes was him.

I rang him at his mobile and it got picked up,

and it was a doctor and he said, "You have to come to the hospital."

I got the call from Mum saying he's in Wexham Park Hospital.

When Mum got to the hospital, she didn't see him for two hours.

We have learned that his heart got out of rhythm

and it stopped beating for eight minutes

and that he received three defibrillator shocks.

He was very unwell for many hours.

When I walked into the room, it was just shock.

He was in an induced coma.

He was attached to all these machines.

So that was a bit hard, then.

I would never wish that on anybody to walk in

and see any member of their family

completely reliant on machines and medication to live.

The doctor said,

"We're not gonna know until we start to try and wake him up.

The difference is in seconds,

if the brain isn't getting enough oxygen."

And so you're just waiting and there's no scan that can tell you

what his brain will be like when he wakes up.

And there was nothing we could do.

Coming into the season, we wanted to achieve a top-four finish.

Obviously, the start of the season was a... a very sluggish and slow start.

We're currently sat in fifth place.

Midway through the season, the league splits.

Top four teams will play for the title

and bottom four teams play to avoid relegation.

We have one last chance

to get that top-four place that we so desperately want.

We're due to take on Swansea City women.

Obviously a team that we have a lot of history with

and not a great record against.

We've got a real challenge against Swansea.

We've never actually beaten them.

That can get into your head.

That's what hurts so much, is that every time we play Swansea,

it seems so close and then it almost gets stolen last minute.

Swansea win or draw, and they're in top four.

We don't have that luxury.

We have to win.

It's Swansea women against Wrexham.

Everything is on the line.

It was relentless.

You know, they attack, we attack.

Jay Rodriguez is obviously a very familiar figure to anyone

who's been a fan of English domestic football,

uh, over the last 10, 15 years as... as I have.

He has probably the greatest disparity between surname and accent

of anybody in the British Isles.

He has the name of a sexy Spa-Spanish man and the accent of a Burnley tanner.

Last name Rodriguez is, um, obviously Spanish.

It comes from my dad's side.

Got family in north of Spain, Coruña.

No. And it's my dad's fault as well.

Um, he never taught me.

Yeah.

My dad said I weren't that interested in football until about nine years old.

He took me to training. They were a team called Brunlea.

They were a year older. A few of my friends played there.

And then just playing and did all right,

and then I played for Barrowford Celtic,

and it just came from there, really, that I really enjoyed the game.

When he first found out he had a scholarship, it was his dream,

and he wanted to make sure he did everything perfect.

He's in the second year of his scholarship.

if he has a professional deal with Wrexham,

or if he'll be released by Wrexham.

Hopefully all the hard work he's doing now

will lead him on to a football career, hopefully.

Me and Harry, or Ashie, as we all call him,

we're the only local lads at the club, pretty much.

Ashie, he's done the pathway from a young age at Wrexham

for the scholarship to the first team, getting his contract.

And it's been great to see him do it as a friend but also as a teammate.

It gives me hope that I can do the same, hopefully.

These boys have invested up to eight years of their time in a training program.

That commitment's being made

because they're chasing the dream of being a professional footballer.

What's it like with the first team every day?

It's great. They're like mates.

I'm Maurice Jones.

I've been supporting Wrexham since I can remember, basically.

Grew up on a farm.

My parents had no idea about anything to do with sport.

But football was for me, and then it was Wrexham was for me.

I nagged and nagged and nagged my father to take me to a game,

which he eventually did in 1965.

And I know we lost 5-1 at home to Tranmere Rovers.

I remember finding my seat. I sat there.

Nothing after that until the following Wednesday when I was woken from a coma.

The first day they woke him up, the nurse asked my sister,

"Well, who are Wrexham playing next?"

And my sister said Exeter, and my dad shook his head

with the ventilator in his mouth, he shook his head.

And she went, "Oh, that's right, Stockport." And he nodded his head.

He was starting to write on a whiteboard, and he said,

"Another team will say we're bad after we beat them 1-nil."

And we knew that that was Dad.

So what do I do... What do I do with it? Do I, uh, frame it?

Maybe.

It's completely improbable.

We're told by multiple doctors that this is not the outcome

that you see for a 71-year-old

who had an, uh... a cardiac arrest outside of hospital,

but that the immediate CPR kept the oxygen going to his brain.

If it had happened half an hour later,

I'd have been walking back to the station

and wouldn't be talking to you today, probably.

We have been bowled over by Wycombe

and their response and the professionalism of the team.

The atmosphere was just of complete respect,

and the energy was that people were just willing it to be okay.

We owe a debt of gratitude to them.

- Nice day. - Nice. It's a lovely day.

and they have exactly what happened to Maurice,

and you're the only person that can help them.
