[music]

Sandra, tell us about all these monuments.

OK, so these pictures of the Eiffel Tower,

the Parthenon, Mount Kilimanjaro,

the pyramids, all represent... can anyone guess?

It appears you're preparing to travel the world.

Or either die in an old tomb.

-Really, Mr. Brown? -No, no.

OK, Mr. Reginald, you got it.

I'm also thinking about studying abroad.

Travel is one of the best gifts any person

could ever give themselves.

Yep, yep, you should make that happen for yourself, Sandra.

Princess, what are all these images of individuals?

-They look sad. -Well, they are.

See, on this side, there are people in strife,

and then this photo in the middle, that's me.

Oh, really? We couldn't tell. With the phone selfies, like...

-Mr. Brown? -OK, go ahead, do your thing.

And then on the other side are people that are happier.

And what are these images communicating, Sandra?

Well, by doing this, I realized that I love helping people.

And I always hear stories

of people that are lonely or a battered wife or suicidal,

and I always wish I could help.

And then I realized that by being a psychologist,

I get to help all kinds of people

dealing with all kinds of things.

Oh, bravo.

[applause] That was lovely.

Your teacher is going to love your vision board.

-I hope so. -How could she not?

You're all but assured of getting an excellent grade.

Yes, at least a "C".

I mean "A", you just got to add

more pictures and stuff on there.

OK, well, let's see your board, Mr. Brown.

See-

That's right. That's what I thought.

OK, thank you everybody, except Mr. Brown.

Now, Mr. Efe, your turn.

-Good job, Princess. -Thank you.

-[sighs] -OK.

This has been the most difficult thing I have ever done.

You're so dramatic.

Why you just gotta take these long breath

like you about to preach?

Mr. Brown. Mr. Brown. Mr. Brown. Please.

Yes, OK, shh.

This has been one of the most difficult things

I have ever done. But I'm happy I did it.

I was depressed about my age.

I can see why. I'm looking at you.

OK, thank you, Mr. Brown.

-You depress me with your age. -Thank you for your comments.

Thank you. Thank you.

-[Mr. Brown] You're welcome. -OK. Thank you.

Anyway, my age started becoming

my reason why I stopped dreaming.

Then all of you encouraged me to do this vision board.

And then I remembered a saying from my country.

"Not to know is bad. Not to wish is worse."

Now, I did not know what I was going to do

this year or next year.

But what was worse is I stopped dreaming of what to do.

Well, tell us about your vision.

OK.

I see you still got the apple in the middle there.

Well, that represents eating healthy, right?

Yes, I thought so.

But I missed the subliminal message

when I first included this image.

Tell us.

The apple is on a desk. What kind of desk?

A teacher's desk.

It is?

Mm. I wish to dedicate my time to teaching young minds.

You would consider teaching, Mr. Efe?

I would.

Well, I can help you with this goal.

-You can? -Sure can.

Oh, but wait. Wouldn't the school board

push back on an old man like me teaching?

What? Are you kidding me?

There's a terrible teacher shortage.

You would be welcome with open arms.

Oh, my God.

Yes. You just got to work on your English.

They don't understand what you're saying.

[impersonating Mr. Efe] "Welcome to my class."

Hey, anybody got their cell phone?

[Yeah, I've got mine with me. Why?

Well, you're sweating. You look like you've been running.

-What's wrong? -Yeah, you OK, Dad?

-I just got carjacked. -[Efe] Oh, my God.

What?

[music]

? No matter what you do, I love you ?

? No matter where you go, I'm behind you for sure ?

? Always remember, blood ain't never water ?

? We'll make it if we stay together ?

-Up the street at the stoplight. -Are you OK, Jeremy?

-I'm fine. -Did they have guns?

-Two big ones. -Oh, my God.

Did you call the police?

Nah, I left my phone in the car, man. I just ran over here.

-I'll go get Mom. -I'll call 911 right now.

I'll look out for the police.

-What happened? -Jeremy just got carjacked.

-Did they have guns? -Yeah.

-How many was it? -Two of them.

-That is terrifying. -Oh my goodness.

Hey, did you see what they look like?

Man, they had on masks, but I know they were young.

Young?

Yeah, yeah, like probably like 18, 19. They were young.

-Oh, my goodness. -That's terrible.

-I'm fine, baby. -What happened, baby?

Man, I'm at the light,

this kid comes up to me trying to get my attention.

I roll down my window like a dumbass.

Next thing I know, it's a TEC-9 in my jaw.

-A what? -[Vinny] Oh my goodness.

Yeah, I'm fine. I'm fine, baby. All right?

You know, they wanted the car, I gave it to them, that was it.

A smart man. A car can be replaced.

-Exactly. -This is crazy.

Yeah, I know. I know, baby.

I'm fine, OK? Crazy things happen sometimes.

OK, the police are on their way. Now, Jeremy,

I want you to write down everything that you remember

while it's still fresh in your mind.

Yeah, OK. Here's a pad.

You can just write it down right here. Here.

You should sit down, Jeremy. You don't look good.

Yeah, you look... You look traumasized.

Here, baby. Come on, sit down. Sit down.

I'll get you some water.

He don't want no water. You want some bourbon, son?

I'm fine, Grandpa.

Well, I got a fat blunt in my pocket. You want to hit that?

Vinny, the police are on their way here, jackass.

Ain't gonna be too many more jackasses, OK?

I cannot believe this.

Hey baby. Sit down, OK? Come on now.

I don't want you getting all worked up over this.

That's not good for the baby, all right?

I'm sorry that happened to you, Jeremy.

-Yeah, you love that sports car. -Hopefully they'll find it.

They're not gonna find that car. They'll strip that car so fast,

you won't even recognize it in the morning.

Grandpa's right.

Uh, Sandra, I need you to go to my room, baby,

and look in the file cabinet,

and get the insurance papers for me. They're in the top drawer.

OK.

This is crazy.

Terrible. I can't stand a thief.

Mom, Dad, the police are outside.

-Yeah, we called them. -What's going on?

Your dad got carjacked, man.

-Dad, you good? -I'm OK, Philip. I'm good, man.

Well, if you think of anything else, call me.

-Here's my card. -All right. Thanks, Detective.

Thank you, sir.

And I can't emphasize to you how smart it was

to get out of the car so quickly, Mr. Washington.

I have to tell you, man, I thought about it for a second.

I'm like, man, this young punk

wanna come and make me get out of my car?

I wanted to put my hands around his neck.

Well, the fact that they were young

is why I'm happy you did get out of the car.

Why do you say that, Detective?

The young ones are crazy. They'll shoot.

-Oh my God. -Oh my goodness. Wow.

So we've alerted all neighboring counties.

Hopefully if they're driving around, we'll get them.

All right. Well, thanks again, Detective.

-Dad, thank God you're OK. -Yeah, you're right. Thank God.

Were you scared?

Man, I was more so just in shock that it was happening to me.

I'm in shock. I mean, you hear about this stuff happening,

but you never think about it happening to you.

Hey, hey, hey, what's going on there?

[TV News Anchor]And a rash of break-ins down in Breshington

is causing great concern for local residents.

Oh no, that's right in our area.

Oh my goodness, Reginald, that's right down the street.

[Anchor]And to make a scary situation scarier,

The masked bandits strike at night while people are at home.

Because the thieves are so brazen,

-police are especially worried. -Oh Reginald, that's horrifying.

What? What's horrifying? What happened?

There's been a rash of home break-ins in the area.

-In this area? -Mm-hmm.

[Anchor]Authorities say the dubious criminals

particularly target the elderly.

Oh, I'm scared.

Oh, well, just let me just talk to Jeremy. It'll be all right.

Talk to me about what?

People are robbing homes in this neighborhood.

And they're targeting the elderly.

-And that's us. -Speak for yourself.

That's not good.

See, baby?

I told you and Mr. Brown to get that alarm fixed.

Wait, wait, we don't have an alarm?

Relax, Mr. Reginald, we have an alarm.

We just need to update it and I want to repair all the cameras.

-So there is an alarm? -[Jeremy] Yeah.

It's just an out-of-date one.

Oh, it's OK, Judge Junie. It's OK.

Well, I'm sorry, Cora, but this can't be taken lightly.

OK, well, we have to take precautions, Jeremy, please.

Yeah, I know. I'm not going to let anything happen

to any of us, all right? We're good.

-Hey, everybody. -Hello.

Hey, is everybody OK?

No, we're not. We're concerned for our safety.

OK, everybody calm down!

Listen, we have consulted with a number of consultants

about the security that we have securitified here

at the Pleasant Day facilities. And make sure that we gratify-

Brown, Brown, Brown, will you shut up, please?

Vinny, sit down and shut up. You late for the meeting.

You can't make me sit down!

Oh, you two. Will you please just stop it, all right?

Just have a seat, please, Mr. Vinny.

All right, I'll sit down for you.

Yes, please. I want to hear how they're going to protect us.

Yeah, people are breaking in.

OK, well, look, Mr. Reginald,

the reports are actually in Breshington.

-Yeah, that's one town over. -Well, close enough.

I wish somebody would break up in here,

I got something for they ass. I do.

Mr. Vinny, please, language.

I promise everyone, we are doing everything we can

to prevent anyone from coming in here.

Yeah, I mean, it could happen to anybody.

You know? That's why your mother and I are always so worried

about y'all being out all times of the night.

Mm-hmm. Yeah, you always remind all of us,

[Everyone] Keep your head on a swivel.

-He learned that from me. -Yeah, I tell all y'all that,

but I need to start taking my own advice.

I feel nervous.

It's OK. Don't feel nervous, baby.

Everything gonna be all right, all right? We're good.

Look, y'all need to worry about something else,

because Grandpa Vinny got this place covered.

I got a few of my friends tucked all over this place.

What you talking about, Grandpa?

I got my friend Smith, I got my friend Wesson,

and I got my friend Glock. I wish a mother-

Hey, man. Hey, relax.

Look, y'all need to worry about something else,

because Grandpa Vinny got this place covered.

You can believe that.

[music]

She know she could've called me. You just ignored my phone call.

Well, I don't know what,

you probably stopped and got a hamburger or something.

Ignorant.

Mr. Brown, I'm here.

-Cora! -[Cora] What?

Why you ain't answering your phone?

Mr. Brown, you know I had a church community meeting.

Well Cora, you didn't see me calling you all that time?

Mr. Brown, look, I seen your messages and everything,

but what happened? Is Jeremy OK?

Cora, no, Jeremy not OK. It was terrible, Cora.

-He was traumasized. -He was traumatized.

Yes, Cora, you should've seen it.

Like what?

Cora, I gotta show you. I can't just tell you.

OK, well show me.

OK, Cora, I'm gonna show you. Now, I was standing right here.

-You standing right here? -No, no, over here.

Come back right this way. I was standing right there!

I'm gonna show you. Stay right there.

-Cora! -Yes?

He came in the door, and he was sweating.

-And he was tired. -[Cora] Uh-huh.

-And he looked disheveled. -OK.

And he's tired, like this, and he said,

[impersonating Jeremy] "I got carjacked."

And I said to myself, "I already knew."

Yeah.

Because I said to myself this morning,

I said, "Self?" Uh-huh. My self said, "Huh?" I said "Huh," back.

And I said, "Something is gonna happen."

Really?

And he tell me he got carjacked by some carjackers

with a gun at gunpoint, Cora.

-He did? -I heard it in my spirit, Cora.

-That was terrible! -Oh, I'm hydroventilating.

-But you OK? -Yes.

You're hyperventilating, Mr. Brown.

-Calm down. -Cora, I can't calm down.

-Oh, you're shaking, Mr. Brown. -I'm shaking. I'm shaking.

[Cora] You are shaking.

-I'm nerveless. -Yes, you're nervous.

-You're shaking, too. -Yeah because you're shaking me.

-Cora, you're shaking. -No, you're shaking me.

Mr. Brown, just calm yourself. Calm down.

[doorbell rings] OK, that's the door, Mr. Brown.

I gotta sit down myself. I get so worked up!

Who is it?

Oh, oh, it's the police. Hello, how you doing, sir?

-Is Jeremy Washington here? -Yeah, I'll get him for you.

-No, I'll get him, Cora. -[Cora] OK.

-Jeremy! It's the police! -[Cora] I could've did that.

Well, you didn't do it.

-Hey, how you doing, Detective? -There's Jeremy right here.

-I think we got him. -You did?

Yeah. And you won't believe who it was.

[music]

OK. Who was it?

-They were kids. One 13, one 14. -13 and 14-year-old with guns?

Well I mean, detective, how does a 14-year-old even get a gun?

Well, it's a trend nationwide.

Violent criminals are getting younger and younger.

Man, I knew they were young,

but I didn't know they were thatyoung. That's crazy.

Yeah, being that young,

they should be in the house playing video games,

or outside playing basketball.

-Is everything OK? -They found the guys.

Oh, that is good news.

-Yeah, what about my car? -Got the car too.

They were riding around with a group of their friends.

These young criminals aren't too smart.

Well, where are the parents?

That's the question we always ask.

And usually when we find out, we're not as angry at the kids.

Well, that's the thing I learned

when I was teaching all those years.

I mean, some of these kids, they can be so crazy,

but when you see the home life of them, you understand.

Yes, that is why it takes a village to raise a child.

So true.

Many of these homes, they're dysfunctional.

-Everyone must play their part. -That's so true.

So, Mr. Washington, I know they had on masks,

but we hope you can still come down and take a look,

maybe hear them speak.

Yeah, I'll come down. I remember their complexion, their hair.

-That helps. -[Jeremy] Yeah.

But you caught them in the car, right?

We did, but they haven't owned up to it yet.

All right, well, I'll come down.

Bye, Dad.

You want me to go with your baby?

-No, no, no. -[Leah] No?

I'm good. I'll go by myself.

Y'all just stay here and make sure everything's OK, OK?

OK. All right, see you.

I'm just trying to figure out how he seen their complexion

if they had masks on.

-The eye part, maybe. -Did they have black hands?

-Good morning, beautiful people. -Back at you, Ms. Kimberly.

-Good morning. -Is Leroy here?

We haven't seen him yet this morning.

Oh, I heard him. I usually hear him before I see him.

You're right about that.

Efe, I'm so excited about the discoveries you made

while doing your vision board.

Oh, I wanted to thank all of you.

This exercise has excited me, you know?

I'm excited, Efe. The young men in our schools need you.

Kimberly's right, Efe.

You know those criminals that took Jeremy's car?

They were 13 and 14-year-olds.

-I can believe it. -I couldn't. 13 and 14?

So many of our Black kids are in crisis.

You know, I feel a sense of duty.

Many of the elders imparted much wisdom to me

when I was a younger man.

I believe I'm supposed to pay it forward.

Now, I must warn you,

working with our young people is not easy.

Uh-uh. I would not accept a challenge if it were easy.

Good. You and I should go down to the district office tomorrow.

Tomorrow? Really?

Yes. There's no time to waste, Mr. Efe.

The need is immediate and very urgent.

Ooh.

[Mr. Brown] Cora, listen to your daddy.

That man ain't no good!

[Cora] He just want to take me to lunch.

[Mr. Brown] It's lunch now.

Then he gonna want some milk and cookies.

Yourcookies. And that ain't happening!

[Cora] You ain't the boss of me.

[Mr. Brown] Cora, just hush.

I told you. You will hear him before you see him.

-You called it. -Well, I should be!

Hey Gumdrop, look at you in all this blue!

Hi, Leroy.

Are you still going down to the school with me today?

Yes.

I thought we could ride together.

Geez, I like that.

What are you going to be doing down at the school, Mr. Brown?

Leroy is a guest speaker to my class today.

-Wow, that is great, Mr. Brown. -Yeah, yeah.

You know what, Efe, I just had an idea.

Why don't you join us?

Oh, that's a great idea, Mr. Efe.

-What? Me? -Yeah.

OK, why sure. I mean, I'm not doing anything today.

I would love to.

Well, come. It would be great for you to see and interact

with some of the young people from our district.

[Mr. Brown] Yeah, yeah.

Then you can hear my provocative speech that I'm going to do.

Provocative?

That would be great Ms. Kimberly. Let me get my coat.

OK.

This is going to be so good for Efe.

I hate that happened to Jeremy.

Yeah Cora, I never would have thought

something like that would have happened.

-Hey, Ma. -Hey, baby.

-Heard anything from Dad yet? -No, not yet.

You know what? The good thing is that they found the car,

and they found out who did it.

Yeah, well, I hope they send their stupid butts to jail.

-Yeah, and throw away the key. -[Cora] Wow.

I feel like this neighborhood is getting worse.

Yeah, it's just as bad as the city now.

[Leah] Listen, baby, look.

Bad things can happen almost anywhere.

That's true. That's why we have to stay prayed up, y'all.

That's right, Cora. Amen to that.

-Oh, Jeremy. Hey, baby. -Hey, everybody.

-Hey, Dad. -I heard they caught the guys.

-Yeah, they did. -So what about the car?

Man, it got a dent in it.

They wrecked it that fast? They only had it a couple hours.

Yeah, well, they're 14. They don't know how to drive.

That's how they got caught. They rear-ended some lady.

I hope they didn't hurt anybody.

Yeah, well, they hurt themselves

by committing such a serious crime.

Well, did you get to see them?

Yeah, I saw them, but they didn't see me.

-Oh. -[Vinny] Hey, everybody.

-[Cora] Hey. -I heard you found them, huh?

Yeah, Jeremy just got back.

He helped the police identify them.

Bet you wanted to wring their necks, right?

Normally, that's what I would want to do.

Yeah, we know how you get down.

They lucky the police got to them before you did.

Or before I did, young punks.

Nah, you know, when I went down there and I saw them,

I didn't want to do none of that.

Really?

Nah. I just looked at them. They were sad.

They looked like Philip when he was 14.

They was that ugly?

Obviously, they're not acting like teenagers, OK?

Yeah, and the detective said the court's not going

to treat them like teenagers either.

Well, that's good. Now look, if you're going to do adult crime,

you need to do adult time. That's all I'm saying.

I guess, but I'm just looking at them like,

how do you get into something like this at such a young age?

Like, what's going on with our people?

Obviously, everything starts at home, man. It does.

And if the home is dysfunctional,

howdowe help the kids?

Look, this is a problem in every city across the country.

You know what I mean?

Well, what we going to do about it?

I'm telling you, you figure that out,

and you can run for president.

[music]

Great job, Leroy.

Thank you, thank you, my gumdrop. I had a good time.

Gumdrop?

I swear, the names you come up with for me.

But I'm glad you had a good time.

What about you, Efe? You've been so quiet.

Yeah, yeah, you ain't said a word.

[Efe] No.

Today was amazing.

I was in awe of those young minds.

-They are amazing, aren't they? -[Efe] Yeah.

I'm a happy man.

At my age.

At my age.

I'm still dreaming.

Thanks to both of you.

-Not bad, huh? -No, we like peaches and herbs.
