believing it to be where the Aztecs hid their treasure,

but the property is riddled with unexplained phenomenon.

are determined to find the cache of gold.

Chad is exploring their most-promising lead yet,

an underwater cavern that he believes is a pathway

leading into the Keyhole Chamber.

is get inside.

It's been 30 minutes since Chad and Wendell have been

down inside this underwater cavern.

It's nerve racking.

If something happens, there's nothing we can do about it.

I scuba dive. But cave diving, I draw the line.

It's... that ain't for me.

It's one of the most dangerous things that you can possibly do.

You get turned around, you could die ten foot from the entrance.

That's how much Chad wants to find this gold.

He's willing to risk his life to do it.

and then it opened up into this, like, big cavern.

It goes way back in there.

That's frigging amazing.

We believed, for years, that underneath the ranch is a tunnel system

that leads to a cache of treasure.

And to finally see evidence with my own eyes

that people were living in this these... these underground tunnels,

I mean, this is [bleep] huge.

I mean, it kind of takes your breath away.

This opening, it's, like, wild.

It's amazing, man.

I mean, this is so powerful.

We are so close to finding that Aztec gold now.

This could be it. I really think this is it.

[narrator] A few days after diving into the cavern,

Chad is back on the ranch

updating the team on his findings.

Chad, what did you find down in there?

So, I dove into this small entrance, and then it...

kind of opened up into a bigger cavern.

Wow.

[Chad] I got a video of it right here. Look at this.

[Charlie] How are you fitting through that?

Some of them are so tight that I could just barely fit my body through.

It's like a series of caverns one after another.

It'd get really tight for a while, and then it opened up.

So you follow it all the way up...

and then you see this surface water.

We reached...

And it was, like, this big old cavern, like... like, Goonies style.

-Yeah, it's huge. -Yeah.

You could drive a semi-truck through them.

[narrator] The chamber Chad uncovered stretches 20-feet wide

with a vaulted ceiling over 15-feet tall,

proving that this part of the cavern system

was large enough for people to live inside of.

It also proves that similar large chambers

could exist throughout the sprawling cavern system

leading to the Keyhole Chamber.

[Chad chuckling] That's [bleep] wild.

And then into the back of the cavern,

I started seeing these little shards.

[Wendell] Oh, look at that.

[Chad] Wow.

See, it has the lines on it.

[James] That's all pottery shards, Chad.

That's interesting by the distribution of those pottery shards

that you can see on your camera right there.

There's no way that all these different shards

-would have washed right into that location. -[Chad] Right.

It would have been spread over a much greater distance,

you know, something like you see on the shore

or beaches, you know?

I think those shards were dropped there.

Really?

And that's not the only stuff I found.

Take a look at this.

Wow, that's an amazing projectile point.

The good thing is, we have the neck so we can even date it.

Based on the corner notches and the size of this,

my guess is this is anywhere

between 500 and...

maybe 1,000 years old.

And look at this. So, it was incorrectly cut.

It was broken.

What happens? Can't use it. What do you do?

So this is telling me what?

It's telling me that it was worked down there.

So, you know what that means.

That means, at one point in time, that...

that... that cavern was dry.

and the cavern system was once dry,

it is evidence that humans were living

and traversing throughout the underground.

This matches what we'd expect to find,

if this was the ancient Aztec homeland.

The cave would have provided shelter,

and at some point, the people left

and the cave was inundated with water.

-Maybe to hide their treasure. -Wow.

So these artifacts are proof

that there was a civilization

living down in this cavern.

That's absolutely amazing.

I think we may very well have found the entrance to the Keyhole Chamber

-that we've been looking for. -Hell, yeah.

Was all that pottery right down below you?

Yeah, it was in with, like, a three-foot radius, all in that area.

[narrator] After diving the underwater cave,

Chad and the team have uncovered evidence

suggesting people were inhabiting

an underground tunnel system

below the ranch.

So these artifacts are proof

that there was a civilization living here.

[narrator] They now have proof of human activity

in two crucial locations,

at the entrance to the flooded cavern,

and at the Bead Site,

which sits on the other end

of the two-mile long cavern system

at the tail end of the Keyhole Chamber.

So we have found artifacts at the Bead Site,

and that's where this underwater cavern system starts.

And now, we found them at the other end as well.

So human beings could have been living

throughout this entire cave system.

There is 100-percent chance that humans used this

as a path down into the Keyhole Chamber.

[James] This is exciting.

It matches what we would find in the ancient Aztec homeland.

I agree.

I think we found one of the entrances to Chicomoztoc.

Damn right it is.

This tunnel could also be the Aztec homeland,

Chicomoztoc, that James has been telling us about.

[narrator] According to legend,

Chicomoztoc is the ancient homeland of the Aztec civilization,

comprised of a network of seven caves.

The Aztec illustrations of Chicomoztoc

bear a striking similarity to the Keyhole Cavern.

This may very well be it. I think you may have found it.

Wow.

[narrator] The implications of the discoveries are enormous.

The team has now identified one of the likely paths

the Aztecs used to enter Chicomoztoc

and access the treasure chamber.

I think this is prove that Chicomoztoc theory is true.

You know, for years people thought

I was flat ass crazy on this whole deal,

and that there's no Aztec treasure chamber,

no gold on Blind Frog Ranch.

But this discovery is confirming everything

we believed all along.

People say there's nothing like that

Chad, you think there's another way in down there?

I didn't see one.

And I was trying to keep on going towards the current,

but it looked like there was some kind of collapse.

Like, all these big rocks...

So you could feel the flow.

Yeah. It had a current pushing against you

when you were trying to go in there.

It got so narrow, I couldn't go any further.

[narrator] With the cavern flooded and the way blocked by rubble,

accessing the entrance any further isn't viable.

So Chad will need to find another entrance

somewhere along the path of the cavern.

I think we need to regroup and come up with a new plan to get in there.

We just have to find another way to drop into that tunnel system.

I mean, this could be the biggest discovery we've ever had.

We know there's a way in.

That tunnel is right below our feet.

Now, we just need a plan.

Eric, what have you got?

So I went to a place in southern Ohio

called the Serpent Mound Disturbance.

It's a verified meteor impact site.

[narrator] For six months, the team has been pursuing

a two-pronged plan

to access the Keyhole Cavern.

The first, is trying to enter

the tail of the Keyhole Cavern

through the Bead Site,

which led to the discovery of the flooded tunnel.

The second prong has been focused

on accessing the Keyhole from above,

drilling into the area known as the Energy Zone.

However, last year,

they struck an impenetrable object

200 feet below the surface.

[man] It's stuck!

There is something huge going on on your property.

Congratulations, boys.

Looks like y'all got a meteor at Blind Frog Range.

I met with a colleague of mine who is an expert

in meteor impact sites.

[narrator] Searching for a way past the meteorite

sitting on top of the Keyhole Chamber,

Eric traveled to another meteorite site

in the Ohio Valley...

-Mark Baranoski. -Eric, good to meet you.

[narrator] ...called the Serpent Mount Disturbance.

It's very large... approximately five miles in diameter.

It's huge.

[narrator] In addition to the meteorite,

Eric encountered another striking feature in Ohio.

Over 2,000 years ago,

the prehistoric Adena culture

constructed a large ceremonial effigy

in the shape of a snake

directly on top of the meteorite.

So the Adena people built a sacred site and burial mounds,

specifically because of the meteor impact.

I mean, I'm wondering if ancient people did the same thing

at Blind Frog Ranch.

Is it related to the impact site?

Did they carve out the circular Keyhole Chamber

because the meteorite was there?

I mean, it could be the same thing here. I don't know.

The reason I went there was to see how they determined

the size and location of this meteorite.

So, at the Serpent Mound, scientists used a special drill rig

with a core bit on it

to be able to pull up continuous core,

to map out the size and position of that meteorite underground.

So my plan is to use the same technique

to obtain multiple core samples,

and I'll compare that data

and see if we're still in that impact site.

Once we find the edge of that meteorite,

we're gonna drill down past it

into the Keyhole Chamber.

[narrator] If Eric can find the edge of the Blind Frog meteorite,

he believes he can drill around it,

creating a borehole wide enough

to drop straight down into the Keyhole Chamber

where the team believes the Aztec gold is cached.

All right, fellas, that's a good idea.

You know, when you're hunting for a treasure like this, um,

time is never really your friend.

I'm not getting any younger,

and I'd like to see that treasure before it's all over.

So we need to attack this from every angle,

above and below.

So now, Chad's gonna find a way into those underwater tunnels,

and Eric is gonna drill down past that meteorite

into that Keyhole Chamber.

Eric will drill pilot holes in 20-foot increments,

checking the iron content of each core sample.

The less iron in the sample indicates they are reaching

the fragmented edge of the meteorite,

where the drill can easily pass.

"X" marks the spot.

So, Duane hired me five years ago

to help him get in and find that gold.

Now is my chance to show him

that his investment is worth it.

But it's not like this kind of project has been done many times before.

That's pretty good.

So, while I think this plan is gonna work...

I'm a little nervous about this, too.

Put that thing on high idle.

You know, in total, it's gonna cost about 70 grand

to drill past this meteorite.

That's the price we gotta pay to make history.

it'll be well worth the blood, sweat and pain.

[narrator] While Eric is attempting to drill into the keyhole chamber,

Chad and Josh have come up with a new plan

to gain entrance into the underground cavern

by tracking its path from above.

Just be looking for anything that's unusual.

That just looks out of place.

[narrator] Last season, the team tracked the path

of the flooded tunnel using an acoustic beacon.

All right, it's in the hole.

[narrator] Now they'll use the data to trace

the flooded pathway from the surface,

looking for any openings to the underground cavern system.

-[Chad] Let's check that beacon path real quick. -[Josh] Yeah, good idea.

[Chad] I mean, it looks like it goes underneath those rocks.

[Josh] Yeah, and it's limestone.

Now there's... that's where caves are found, is in limestone.

We absolutely could have an entrance to a cave here.

Let's see where that leads us.

People were living down in this cave system,

so we know they had to have other entrances to the surface.

This is just physics. When you're down in the cave system,

you can only go as deep as the ventilation will allow you to.

Once you get to a certain depth, you have to dig an air shaft

or you have to have natural ventilation

from a cave entrance to pipe air down.

There has to be a way to allow that cave to breathe.

It's always uphill, isn't it, Chad?

[Chad] When I was down in that underwater cavern system,

I was so close to the gold, I could feel it.

Knowing what's underneath us here is motivating me to keep searching

until we find another way into that cavern.

I feel like we are closer than ever to finding this gold.

[Josh] We need to scour this rock.

Just look at everything.

Let's see if there's any fissures or caves or anything like that.

Any hole, any crack, a cave, any opening at all

that we see on top of this limestone hill

could be a way down into that cavern system.

Man, I don't see any openings at all, let alone a cave entrance.

and have come across what appears to be a cairn,

a collection of stacked rocks used by indigenous cultures to mark significant landmarks

such as water sources, trails or burial mounds.

-It does look like this has been knocked off here... -[Chad] Yeah.

...to make it a sharper edge.

[Chad] Pointed right over there.

All right. We got any binoculars?

[Josh] Uh, you know... Here. I've got... I got some stuff in my bag here.

See what you can see with that.

It looks like it's pointing east.

So you see those bunch of trees right there?

Right below that there's a round object.

We're out here and we're finding these markers

all over the path of this underwater cavern,

and these have been untouched for hundreds of years.

Somebody worked these. They had purpose.

Now we've got to figure out what these people are trying to tell us.

It's almost like you get a feeling when you know you're on the right track.

I mean, it's kind of hard to describe,

but it's no coincidence that these markers

are right above the underwater cavern.

We are onto something big here.

searching for the edge of the meteorite

blocking their access to the keyhole chamber below.

A cavern they believe is housing the Aztec gold.

Eric is drilling the first pilot hole 25 feet from the center of the energy zone.

In the oil fields, we always finished every project we were on.

I have built a reputation on getting jobs done no matter what.

But this job, finding that gold is not done.

And that bothers the hell out of me.

So we'll do whatever it takes to get into that chamber and find that gold.

Run a metal detector over this. See if there's any fragments in there.

Eric is searching for small pieces of meteoric iron in each core sample.

[Eric] So most meteorites are composed of iron and nickel.

A lot of iron in that core sample

means we're close to the main body of the meteorite.

So we'll step out and drill a new hole

until we're not hitting any more iron.

And that's consistent with what a meteorite fragment would be.

So let's move over and see if we can get outside of it.

So everything we're pulling up out of the ground is giving us a more clear picture.

Each clue gets us closer to the gold and help us solve the puzzle.

and so, this is good information.

But what we need to do now is step out maybe 20, 25 feet,

do another core and then compare that to the original bore.

The idea is, the less fragments we find, the closer we are to the edge.

and have come across a cairn which is pointing directly to another large rock formation.

Turtles were important to the Aztec,

and they could've been used as symbols to hide some sort of treasure.

All this imagery out here, these rock cairns, that turtle,

they line up with the underwater cavern,

so we'll see how they connect to one another,

and if they actually lead us somewhere.

And we've got to get over that turtle right now.

So what did the turtles mean to the Aztecs?

So for the Aztec, the turtles were a symbol of resilience and survival.

And, I mean, survival would have definitely been on the Aztecs' mind.

They lost their entire empire.

Chad's got me on a treasure hunt, and I love treasure hunts.

The thing about it is, though, is treasure hunting is not about following a map.

It's about following the people who left the treasure,

who they were and what their motives were.

So, that's really what I'm trying to learn.

[narrator] Indigenous cultures such as the Aztecs,

have used stone turtle markers for centuries.

Records claim that the head of the turtle marker points the way to treasure,

with etched markings on the shell indicating the distance to its location.

However, when the treasure is gone, the turtle's head is removed.

The fact that this turtle marker still has its head

is a positive indication that the treasure is still on Blind Frog Ranch.

So we're actually at about 75 degrees east.

Yeah, right about there.

And Chad, that bearing is lining up with the beacon path

right here in front of us.

so that he can drill around it and penetrate directly into the keyhole chamber below,

where they believe the Aztecs' lost treasure of gold bars

has been hidden for more than 500 years.

So our first hole revealed a lot of iron fragments.

The second sample had almost none,

implying that we're closer to the edge.

So now we're drilling a third hole

another 20 feet away from the center of the Energy Zone,

to see if our soil sample reveals the edge of that meteorite.

It's taken a long time to get to where we are and,

but we're doing it right, though. We're being very careful.

I can be patient, but, uh, I can't wait forever.

I want to look back and say, "This was the day we found that gold."
