...promising every thing I built.
Who am I?
There's a rat in your pig, Maze.
Help!
Me, Maze!
I made him a promise.
I swore that I would like out for you.
I know everyone just sees this terrifying scene.
I guess I just don't see it like that.
Does she have something over you?
It looks like I'm late to the party.
The crow, ah!
He was sure that you were dead.
Well, at least he hoped it.
But I had a feeling
that if you could survive a methane bomb attack
in the Hudson,
and you can certainly handle an urban park.
We checked Belvedere Castle.
We checked the zoo, we checked the skating rink.
The boathouse was almost an afterthought.
And how funny that all this time,
there was this little collective in our own backyard.
And here we are.
Welcome right this way.
Come, come, come, come.
Watch for ticks.
Watch for ticks.
Watch for ticks.
Take it.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
She fell back, stumbled into the candles, into the clothing rack.
I couldn't have saved her without endangering myself.
Oh, my God, she was delirious, attacking me.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
What happens next?
we go on ready ourselves for new babylon we don't have christos
are we still at brugal i'm burazi i mean what happens with me yes
yes of course
you've lived up to your word you've done more than anyone could have asked
last night we had a signal from across the river your family will be arriving tomorrow
you can all stay or go whatever you choose
is it really that bad if you wanted us dead we'd be dead
i know he's acting all friendly but i saw him with the co-ed
they're all on the same side
you okay just sort from yesterday i'm fine
look seeing as it's just us now i think it's fair to say we're heading home
first chance we get
don't worry they don't bite
i mean they do obviously
sure it's nice to see one of these again
been a while found it at the boathouse loaded one would have been nicer but
oh well another relic for the museum
make yourself comfortable please please
please everybody sit
sorry for the prison-like vibes we had to get you all the way through the park
but from this moment on
no one's gonna keep you here
i mean it if you want to go go but don't leave it on an empty stomach
i gotta say that what new babylon has done on the mainland
it's inspiring i mean i've only heard it second hand but
the scope the organization
i see your id
special occasion right
pretend we're in europe
down the hatch
the colonization business
that's your niche isn't it
but it's got its cons
the exploitation of natural resources
the annihilation of indigenous people's way of life
but on the pro side
it's got the exploitation of natural resources
the annihilation of indigenous people
i'm kidding
half kidding
honestly
i'm all for it
there's literally nothing i would like more
than to be colonized by you
but
there has to be something to exploit
right
what if i could give you
but i'm guessing you're already after
that's right
the methane
i don't have it yet
but i can get it
from the croat and negan
and those pesky little minions
and as a bonus i will throw in
the bloody extermination
of every single one of them
and we're supposed to trust you
because the last time i checked
you were pretty chummy
with the croat and negan
chumminess was necessary at the time
and now affords us the element of surprise
you ever seen the painting
washington crossing the devil
attacking yourself
and why do you even need us
because sooner or later
he'll have to tussle with new babylon
gold star
see
everybody wins
well not everybody
not the ones we're gonna rob and kill
but you understand what i'm saying
we'll think it over
you think all the time you need
you bring that bucket let's go
what happened
we found her outside like this
who did this deal
who
i think it was a
no no no no it's nothing to worry about
it was obviously
a pack of skin sacks
it's a gentrifying neighborhood
what do you expect
whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa hey
it's my fault
i could have helped her
i didn't
and now she's gone
and now you will be leaving too
but i will be here still
why
i mean who says that you have to stay
who says that you have to light the city
guard the island all that bullshit
that was her thing
her fight
you remember how she talked about
fresh starts
well
you actually get to walk that walk
clean slate
you said it before
if they don't know what coming that's all we need
it was different then
exactly we'll have the numbers now
it isn't the plan that can't be trusted
it's him
if he is willing to double cross the croat
why not you
i mean
you want to bring back the old world
guess what
brugal
is the old world
playing games with people
chewing them up and spitting away what's left
like empty shells
maybe you already knew that
because that's what new babylon has been about for a long time
now you're gonna let him kill whoever it takes
like enough people haven't already died to get you your method
what do i do maggie
he's offering me a chance to finish it
to make it all mean something
tell me another way
do it just us
the four of us
can do it
what do you mean
i'd rather it be us than brugal
i already said you can go home
herschel and jenny can distract him
like we did before
and then you and i can go in the first place
let alone with your son
now you want to put yourself in even more danger
we can handle it
unless this isn't about you
or him
or any of us here
no
it's not
you wanted negan dead once
now you want to save his life
i don't get it
look we're all exhausted
let's just sleep on it
let's just sleep on it
see where we are in the morning
if you could do anything
go anywhere
what would you do
you know our surgeon general says that can complicate your pregnancy
luckily i am in my third amyster
i never took you for a smoker
fine
you know you uh
never answered my question
go big
don't roll back
let's move for the fences
as many shitty hands as you've been dealt
i think you've earned the right
i will go home
to croatia
have some baby lamb under peka
maybe my mother's brother
so what's stopping you
i tried
i told you
i crashed my boat
into the island
but perhaps the odds of success
would improve
if i wasn't alone
no i'm serious
come with me
nigger
huh
your family
bring them too
you will love it
i want to see your face
the first time
you will look out
on the plitwitsa lakes
it will silence you all
with wonder
i can't
who says this
who says you could not do anything
go
anywhere
clean slate
clean slate
so
my family
are they coming in
from
you're not up there
on the stairs
when we love
christians
you don't put the left in my head
now
is it between him and me
use me
lie to me
betrayed me
You are my brother!
Get down, that is toxic!
You are the toxic one.
I saved you from her. You should be thanking me. You should be groveling.
Everything that you are, all that you have built, your moat, your sanctuary, your whole god damn persona, is because of me!
Tell me I'm wrong.
Call me a liar!
It's true!
It's true.
Everything.
Everything I am today, is because of you.
You made me what I am.
Go.
Go.
Go.
And don't ever come back.
Leah.
Please.
No.
No.
I want it.
No.
No.
No.
No.
I want it.
No.
No.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Um, whichever way this goes, when it's done, Herschel and I will be heading back to the bricks.
I'm hoping that you'll join us.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Do you know how many times I've thought about killing Negan?
I don't know.
I don't know how many times I've tried.
Maybe I'm just scared of what's on the other side of it.
Like it won't get better.
Or maybe I should have just done it right away and gotten the damn thing over with.
The one thing I know is that it's cost me a lot.
Almost everything.
I know that things have been hard between us.
I guess that maybe the truth is that every time I look at you, I see me looking back.
And how can I help you if I haven't figured out how to help myself?
Anyway, I'm sorry for rambling.
Nothing you think I have.
Half the time.
It's tough.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
Jesus H. Christ.
How many days you've been down here?
Um, I'm not sure.
I think it was a punishment for embarrassing the lady.
The biting thing.
Makes sense.
Hey, you're not gonna, um...
Please, don't put me back in there, please, okay?
I promise.
Relax.
You're good.
In fact, you are free to go.
Really?
Yeah.
I can leave.
I can go home.
Wherever you want.
I wouldn't have the first clue how to get there.
I can go home.
Oh...
Sorry.
So you're a historian, huh?
I mean, I was, yeah.
Although...
Now, everything just seems so...
...upside down.
I don't like history.
I mean, is that how shit really went down,
or is that some yarn that the winners get to spend?
And maybe that is why you're feeling like everything's upside down,
because you are on the losing side.
Well, I take it history on the winner's side doesn't look much better.
Why the hell would you say that?
No, I just... I just meant...
I'm fucking with you.
Speaking of ancient history,
you know, back in the day, I thought I had it all figured out.
You know, I built this system to protect my people.
Another group would come at us, and I would line them up,
do a little song and dance, and I would execute one of them.
You know, just to make an example.
You know, if I didn't get my people killed,
then I sure as hell left them twisted up, broken.
See, maybe the thing they needed saving from was...
was me.
Welcome to the winner's circle, kid.
How to play.
How to play.
How to play.
What are you doing?
What is in that canteen?
Herschel, answer me.
What were you about?
Herschel.
Herschel.
Herschel, stop.
What are you doing?
I'm leaving.
Are you going to her?
Is that what this is?
You poison those people?
Kill them because they're new Babylon now?
Is that what she told you to do?
What?
When we were here before, I saw her.
I thought that was over.
I thought you were done helping her.
Can't you see what it is that she is doing?
And what do you care?
You get what you want too, right?
I stopped them Negan leaves.
You think I don't see it?
You're tying yourself in knots all the time so you don't have to say what it's really about.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Stop lying.
Stop lying.
It's not the same as before.
You don't know what they're doing to Negan.
Of course it's the same.
Okay.
Well, it doesn't matter.
Because tomorrow we're going to go home like we talked about, okay?
Home?
That's not home.
That's just what you call it.
It's just pretending like nothing's wrong.
Like we can go out hunting together.
Like we can sit there eating dinner together.
But you're not really there.
Because you've never really been there.
Like there hasn't been this giant hole at the center of everything.
Hey.
What is it?
What is that?
Close the door.
Close it.
Close it.
Come on.
This way.
Go that way.
Please, go that way.
No!
Go that way.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
You know,
let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
You know,
let's go.
Let's go.
What's so,
The good times, do you think they really happened that way or is it just easier for us to remember them wrong?
The good times, do you think they really happened that way?
I looked all over, but I can't find them. Though I got a feeling they left that bear as a pardon gift.
Okay. I guess they're going then.
They're here.
They're here.
Tell them to turn around and go back.
Take them back to Tennessee where they came from.
Do you understand what I am fucking saying to you?
I don't know.
I don't know.
It's the end.
Come, come.
Please, sit.
Normally it's four players.
Two teams, but, well,
bridge partners are a little hard to come by these days.
Gotta follow suit, unless you're out of that suit,
then you lay down a trump card.
This here we call a dummy hand.
Yeah, I know bridge.
My grandma told me.
Wow.
Warren Buffett taught me.
So, your friend and his son,
they really trashed the joint on the way out, huh?
Did she get to you before she left?
What'd she say?
No, no, no, let me guess.
She said that I am the kind of guy who manipulates,
who cheats, whatever it takes to win.
Am I right?
You're right.
Hmm.
So, it's a no then?
It is.
Used to be we celebrated winners.
We gave them medals.
Wrote big fat histories about them.
I mean, I was a winner back then,
so I guess I'm a bit biased.
But here's the secret.
It's not about the winning.
It's about the fun of the game.
How lucky were we to have lived when we lived, right?
The whole human race had conquered the planet.
We were making medicine and rockets and bombs
and these little tiny screens and getting so fucking
gloriously bored that we finally felt safe enough
that we could have some fucking fun for a change.
Yay.
Boo.
So you're not worried about Negan?
With the whole second wave, the big invasion,
your fellow countrymen are going to get here
and who are they going to find when they get to the church?
Negan.
Which shouldn't be possible,
because you shot him dead.
Whoa.
Oh, yeah.
I heard all about it.
Oh, yeah.
Thrilling adventures of Marshall Armstrong.
See, you weren't the first ones
that I found in the park.
I was just so surprised
at how far she'd gotten.
Because she was fucking crawling.
She was all chewed up.
She'd been bitten, I don't know, 5, 10, 20 times.
But still loose it enough
to talk treaties and alliances.
And she told me all about you.
Oh, yeah, where to find you.
And not to trust you, of course.
The only thing she wasn't quite clear on
was how many days, no, minutes, she had left.
Don't take this the wrong way.
I'm not trying to tattle.
I'm trying to hound.
No Negan, no problem.
Look, I'm going to get that methane,
with your help or without it.
So you can go all in, or you can fold.
But the thing is, you're playing the game either way.
You always are.
Go on ahead.
Come on, Ed.
Oh,
Oh, my God.
Where the hell did you get this?
Bellview.
Tell me where my son is.
I'll have cut off tiny pieces of you.
Don't worry.
I know the way.
Keep still.
Get the Barazzi ready.
We've got work to do.
Hey!
You need to move!
Now!
There's no time!
And action!
You betrayed me!
You are my brother!
One more time.
Lauren really wanted to direct and she really understands the show and cares deeply.
It was one of the greatest joys getting to work with her not only as an actor in the show and as a producer but as a director.
To work with every department and to break down the script together and do that for each character and for the overarching story, there is no experience like collaborating with the entire crew like that.
She put so much thought into it.
She spent a lot of time in the writers room too.
It's so funny, we were shooting something and she's like acting the scene and she's directing the scene.
So we're doing a scene and somebody's like, oh, what's the word?
And she's like, she knows everybody's lines.
I'm like, how do you know everybody's lines?
My favorite scene to direct in episode six was with Joko and Jeffrey in the top floor of the cathedral reflecting on their past and sharing a cigarette.
I want to go home to Croatia.
There was something about that that was so stirring to me as a normal thing that two guys might sit on a stoop and do but within this insane context.
I love working with Joko.
Any scene with him is a pleasure to do.
What he brings to this role as an actor is stunning.
I'm so lucky to have someone like Joko.
The sequence that follows them having the conversation upstairs in the cathedral is really one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the whole episode.
All of these things that were ideas are suddenly brought into a physical altercation.
We have the stunt actors, but I would say the majority of that scene is those guys doing it.
And Lauren was right there in the thick of it, pushing them on and helping them and keeping them motivated.
Let's pause for a second and switch the bats.
The guys brought so much to it and they were broken and exhausted and drenched in sweat.
I'm too old for that s*** is what I've decided.
Suddenly, I can't bounce off the ground like I could when I was 20 anymore at 58.
And so what I realized that day was, ouch, it hurts.
It's not easy.
It's like hip plans or no.
Hips and knees and help.
Yeah.
That's what I remember more than anything.
Also, Negan has gotten in fights with everybody in The Walking Dead world at some point.
And then he gets his ass kicked by Joko, who's like this big.
So that was kind of awesome.
There was some sort of poetry in that.
And I think he took special pleasure in getting to be the dude that got to do the beat.
To see two men that were brothers and find each other again and derail on each other in such violence, it was just a crushing moment.
You made me what I am.
Go.
With that comes, I think, a lot of remorse and a lot of responsibility.
You know, if on some level, the Croat's almost like one of his kids and he wasn't there and he broke him and it's his responsibility.
And so when he sends him away, it's almost like protecting him from Negan.
The most challenging part of Directive 206 was definitely the bear sequence for a number of reasons.
You have to think of the final edit and where you're going to want to see it and where it will be of most benefit and where it will be the creepiest.
And you have to imagine all of that before you even start shooting anything.
So we storyboarded to within an inch of our lives to see it and to build it.
And when you can hold back and not see the bear and when it will really make an impact to see it.
And so with me at this height, the eyeline is proper to bear.
Yeah.
OK, cool.
And it was really interesting because she got to, like, go in her director mode and she'd be like, OK, you go here, you go here, let's try this, let's try this.
And then immediately, boom, she'd switch and go, like, actor mode.
Within performing, especially something like that, where you're really fighting for your life, you have to drum up so much adrenaline and cortisol.
So it was a funny down regulation and up regulation in between each take because I wanted to stay in the zone as much as I could.
It was such an amazing experience.
You weren't the first ones that I found in the park.
She had left.
I can't even start with how I can sing the praises of Dasha.
She was one of the best walkers we have ever had.
When I became a walker, I had to go in there and get fitted for my contacts.
I'm like, yeah, yeah, I wore contacts.
The contacts covers my whole eye.
But then they put this little piece on me and they ate my leg up.
She just captured something that was incredibly moving.
And then that's when I got to work with Kim.
Working with everyone was so great.
We just formed a little family, you know, everybody is very kind and I've been really excited to get the opportunity to be more of a villain.
You know, it's good to see myself outside of stereotypical roles.
I know.
We just arrived here.
We just arrived in this area.
I love all of you guys.
