The photographer said he tried to reach
Mr. Hochberg's family and couldn't. He

was under deadline, so he just went
ahead and used his own judgment.

Well, these photos make this man look
like he lived in a pigsty, but they left

out some facts.

This man was on his way to Germany for
the first time in 40 years because his

sister died of a heart attack.

Didn't have time to clean his apartment,
and he certainly didn't expect a visit

from the press.

It's an invasion of privacy.

Beyond that, when the man's family asked
for a correction, it was ignored.

The newspaper said the photograph told
the story sufficiently.

As we can see, that's truly not the
case.

I agree with Dr.

Hall, Sutton. It seems to me the paper
was very concerned with presenting the

true picture of this man's life.

Well, that's not exactly what I said.

Does this mean that the Tribune is going
to start tidying up its own house?

What's the most satisfying reaction
you've had to a story?

That would be going all the way back to
Detroit.

They closed a factory down after I
exposed the fact that they were using

kids to do piecework.

Best reaction?

When Congressman Bragg threw a scrambled
egg at my lens as I was taking his

picture, when he was having breakfast
with a lady who was not his wife.

Yeah, well, I guess I can't count this
as my death, considering my life has

threatened it all, but it's pretty good.

I just found out that Garber and his
lawyers were talking about a libel suit

against the Trib. Pinchon told them to
take a hike.

But things must be heating up pretty
good for them to try a stunt like this.

discussion of Garber's complaint against
the Tribune.

Now, there are two issues here.

Whether the Tribune was justified in
quoting comments made in private...

and whether the means of obtaining those
quotes was legitimate.

Well, I have information that Councilman
Garber's letter in response to the

article in the Tribune was never
published.

That was his choice.

Excuse me, Lou Grant, Metro editor of
the Tribune.

We told Garber we would publish his
letter, but that we would add an

note restating the quotes had been
confirmed by a second source.

He turned us down.

This is all right here in the reports.

Are you saying that the Tribune has a
vendetta against Garbers?

I'm saying that the quotes taken from a
stolen tape were printed out of context.

The staff's report contained statements
from several leaders in the Mexican

-American community, indicating that
this was not at all representative of

Councilman's true feelings.

Every one of those Mexican -American
leaders is a political ally of Garbers.

The Tribune has never printed a response
from Garbers.

Before we published the story, we
checked with Garber's office.

They denied knowing the existence of the
tape and refused to comment.

It's in our story and it should be in

allowed. There's no rule against it.
