front cover of that magazine and I
wonder, is my neck on the line just so

Arnold Zinner can keep undressing women
in public?

I think you'll find the film rather
straightforward, but if you have any

In 1946, the world was reeling from a
traumatic war.

In these difficult times, the Lord
called upon one man, Thomas Chamberlain,

bring the light and hope of a new
doctrine to a troubled world.

He had just been discharged from the
armed forces of the United States with

country's highest commendations for
valor.

Three years later, Thomas Chamberlain
would be awarded his doctorate in

from the Ohio School of Christian Study
in Carbondale.

You have to understand, Chamberlain and

In 1958, he came to Rosemead,
California, there to establish the first

Pilgrim Church.

I was the editor of the church magazine.

As a result, I was always digging into
the history.

Well, one thing I found out.

Instead of being a war hero, he was
discharged for asthma.

And he went to a school that was run by
a Bible salesman who wore a barber's

collar on him and handed out diplomas as
fast as they could print them.

It must have been tough on your faith
finding out these things.

I began to get curious.

What about?

Oh, money, expenses.

I began to ask questions, and before I
knew it, I was out.

And I mean out.

Our friends would start crossing the
street whenever they saw us coming. Even

Pam's own parents were told to avoid us.

Once you get on the bad side, you become
a non -person.

It's like you don't even exist.

Yeah, like those names missing from that
bronze plaque.

That's right.

We didn't just get social pressures.

The crusade hit us with lawsuits.

And thereafter, our house, our money.

I don't mind telling you, Mr. Rossi,
that we're scared.

It was a memorable occasion when on
Veterans Day 1968, Dr. Chamberlain

more than 100 ,000 of the faithful
during a triumphal tour of the Midwest.

that you took in over a million and a

You're told to bring anything you've
got.

Money, cars, ice boxes.

I don't understand why people are
willing to pay all this.

You see, Chamberlain gets the people to
love him.

He's kind of like an Elvis or someone
like that.

You can't get enough of him.

And you do whatever he wants you to do.

After a while, you get to believe that
without him, you're not going to be

saved. You're going straight to hell.

One thing I'd really like to get across.

I'm not a religious fanatic.

And I'm not crazy either.

So that when I tell you that Thomas
Chamberlain is the single true road to

salvation, you can trust my words.

Believe in him, and you're saved.

Him? Chamberlain?

That's right.

And if you don't believe in it?

I'd like to talk about the church, Mr.
Smithfield.

About your climbing it.

about why you weren't wearing any

answer in two and a half hours.

The other people are Rossi has dug up.

What do you think, Marcus?

I'm just not sure about Smithfield. I
wish I could be more certain.

He talked about skimming. He talked
about Crosley stealing millions.

Billy and Rossi are right.

And Chamberlain is deceiving people.

It should be investigated and exposed.

exemption... For example, a crusade. For

organization must meet the following
requirement that... that no part of its

earnings may benefit any private
shareholder or individual.

Which means a church leader shouldn't
get rich off their churches.

And if they do, the state can prosecute.

I wonder why they haven't.

This may come as a surprise to you, Miss
Newman, but you haven't told me

You've heard all this before? You've had
people come forward with testimony

What if the people behind the crusade
are thieves?

Let me put it like this.

When you go after religion, you run the
risk of appearing to attack God.

And that'll cost you votes in the
valley.

So if we go after the crusade and we can
prove all we're saying, we're still all

alone. Well, you may be alone for a
while.

But if the Tribune can make some noise,
maybe this file of mine will begin to

look more exciting to my boss.

moved down Clay Street like that.

When we got back to the store, the clerk

And they released him immediately.

But the rumor got around town that
Reverend Prescott had been caught

Everyone wanted to believe it because my
father was a preacher.

So, I always think twice before I yell

That the church's business should in no

I don't believe you would be tolerant of
state interference if it were the

press's First Amendment rights we were
discussing.

If the state can't look into a
charitable organization which is taking

of the people who donate to it...

Then we're left wide open to any self
-serving charlatan who throws a cloak

around his shoulders and calls himself a
religion.

Mr. Grant, I don't like the United
Pilgrim Crusade.

Sometimes in life you find yourself
having to defend somebody you don't

I don't know what I can tell you about
the details of the crusade.
