- [Narrator] The following dramatization is based

on police reports, personal interviews,

various news reports, and court records.

Some dramatic license has been taken

in the creation of certain scenes.

(calm music)

โ™ช The world was on fire and no one could save me but you โ™ช

โ™ช It's strange what desire will make foolish people do โ™ช

โ™ช I'd never dreamed that I'd meet somebody like you โ™ช

โ™ช And I'd never dreamed that I'd lose somebody like you โ™ช

โ™ช No, I don't wanna fall in love โ™ช

โ™ช This world is only gonna break your heart โ™ช

โ™ช No, I don't wanna fall in love โ™ช

โ™ช This world is only gonna break your heart โ™ช

โ™ช With you โ™ช

โ™ช This world is only gonna break your heart โ™ช

โ™ช What a wicked game to play, to make me feel this way โ™ช

โ™ช What a wicked thing to do โ™ช

- We're gonna be here until about 3:30

and then we're gonna go to the surf club.

So I asked my father how much was in my trust fund

because his new wife has her own prenup

and I don't want her to take any of mine.

I don't know, last Wednesday?

(crowd chatters)

- How's the gold and silver ball?

- Such a bore.

But my father is on the Board of Trustees.

- After that we cut out and went to the Zulu Club,

but there was this old guy at the bar

that kept on asking Candace go in the back and do some blow

like it was something new.

- So how old was he?

- So bad.

He's about 30.

- That's not that old.

- Hi. - Hi.

- Are you drunk?

- Yeah.

- Say, I know this fantastic place near Times Square,

five stories up and you can get a beer and a gram of coke

and you're served by a fantastic looking oriental chick

wearing only lingerie.

- No way. - Who wants to go?

- I do.

(friends laugh)

- What? - He's here, look.

- [Speaker] God, he's so good-looking.

Looks like a Kennedy.

- [Speaker] So do you want to go?

- In a minute.

Maybe.

- Robert, let me show you your tab.

Think you're over 200 now.

- I'll pay you soon, Mr. Brown,

I got a job at the caterer's now.

- You know, your mother's worried about you.

She's calling me, asking if I know how you're doing.

- I know.

- Don't let her down.

- Thanks.

- Hi.

(kisses) Guess what?

- What?

- I left my keys in the Hamptons,

so I can't get into my apartment tonight.

So could I stay at your place?

- Sure, okay.

- Great.

Michael, a mimosa and a tequila here for Rob, please.

You want a beer too, sweetie?

- Okay.

- [Candace] Great, and a beer.

- I can't believe we're graduating.

Can you believe it?

Three more months, Betsy, and we're into college.

- I know, I know, I know.

But I'm a little nervous.

- Why?

- Well, I mean, I'm gonna be losing you, right,

my life support.

(crowd chatters)

- Okay, are you happy?

- I'm really excited.

- Oh, Jen, don't look at the bar,

but Rob Chambers is staring over here.

- He is? - Yes.

- I wanna meet him.

- That is really disgusting, okay?

- Why? - Betsy, are you crazy?

- Yep, Chambers, I know, all right?

He's an Adonis, but he's got the mentality of a doorknob.

Okay?

Besides the fact that he does multiple amounts of drugs,

and he's totally boring.

But other than that, he's a great guy.

- Come on, I've heard those rumors too.

Even if they're true,

doesn't everyone deserve a second chance?

- Yeah.

You know, you're always looking for the best in people.

- Jennifer, if he likes you, go for it.

- Jen, I want you to meet this guy, tell me what you think.

- Okay, bye.

- Bye. - Bye.

- Betsy, look, he's looking at you.

What does he want?

- I don't know.

- He wants to talk to you.

Go.

Meet him halfway.

- Where are you going? - Be right back.

Hi, I'm-

- Hi, I'm Betsy.

- Look, I just wanted to tell you,

I think that your girlfriend is one

of the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.

And I'd really like to meet her,

but under the circumstances with my girlfriend here,

you know, I don't want to create any friction,

so could you tell her to meet me outside in 20 minutes?

- Yeah, all right.

- Thanks.

Hi.

- Hi.

- It's really crowded in there.

- Yeah.

- I'm Rob.

- Um, I'm Jennifer.

- You live up here, Jennifer?

- No, I live downtown, my friends live up here.

Where do you live?

- Up on 90th, off 5th.

- That's nice.

- This is, what is it?

3:30 on the dot, this guy's fantastic.

Surf club?

- Times Square, I wanna go to that place in Times Square.

- Great song.

- Yeah, I love this song.

โ™ช It would be a game to make me โ™ช

- [Robert] You have a boyfriend, don't you?

- Yeah.

He's in Europe though.

Our relationship is really erratic.

One of us is usually miserable with the other one now.

Is that your girlfriend inside, the blonde?

- Yeah, not really.

I couldn't take my eyes off you.

(calm music)

- Be with you in one minute,

and these are the specials up there.

Hi. - Hi.

- You went shopping, didn't you?

- Yeah, I just got a few things.

- Just a few things.

Mr. Maitland, my friends are here now.

Can I take my break?

- Hi, Betsy, how are you?

- Great, Mr. Maitland. - Sure, go ahead.

- Thank you.

What did you get?

- Oh, I just got a little stuff, but you know what?

I saw this really, really cute hat.

For you. - No, for me?

- Yeah, you would love it.

- Hi. - Hi.

- Hello. - Hello.

- Okay. - Okay, go.

- Okay, um, I know y'all think I'm crazy,

but since we've just graduated

and we're getting on with our lives...

- Oh, is this a farewell speech?

- Let her go!

- (laughs) Come on.

- I just wanted to thank you, that's all.

Each one of you being my friend, it's meant a lot to me.

Each one of you has been there when I've needed you.

So...

I want you guys to wear these.

- Oh, presents!

- I want you to wear it until they wear off, okay?

You can't take them off.

- Okay, will you put it on?

- Never. - Never.

- Aren't you supposed to make a wish when you put 'em on?

- That we'll all get back together at Christmas.

- Yeah, good one.

- Seriously, okay? - Uh huh.

- Okay. - Don't put it on

unless you wish that.

You have to wish that. - I wish that.

- Okay.

We have to tell everyone who gave them.

Exactly, as best friends.

Only our best friends have these.

(friends laugh)

- Here you go.

You ready? - Yeah.

Told you I got the best stuff.

- So swing down off the roof and onto the patio.

I'll leave the patio door open.

I want you to come in there and rob the place

while we're doing it.

- Swing from the roof to the patio?

Now what if somebody sees me?

- Nobody's gonna see you.

And I'll meet you in the park after you're done.

Split the stuff up, I got a great fence.

- [David] What's she got in there anyway?

- Antiques, paintings.

- Antiques, paintings?

What am I gonna do with that?

That stuff's old.

- She's got jewels, furs, cash.

- All right, now you're talking my language.

- So what do you think?

- I don't know, man.

How much is in this for me?

- As much as you can carry.

- I can carry it all.

- Well, you in or what?

- I'm thinking about it.

- You in?

(sensual music)

(couple kisses) (couple murmurs)

Are your parents home?

- No, they won't be home till the end of the month.

I heard something, will you go see?

- It's nothing, don't worry about it.

- Oh, come on, please, Rob.

- Okay.

(Rob kisses)

(suspenseful music)

It's nothing.

(couple kisses)

(shower runs)

(tense music)

- Rob?

Rob?

(cat meows)

โ™ช Think of all the things we've done and now โ™ช

โ™ช You've decided I'm not the one โ™ช

โ™ช A love like ours just can't go on โ™ช

โ™ช Run away, baby, have your fun but โ™ช

- Robert, what is this?

I thought you were through with this.

- I am, Mom.

- Robert.

- Mom, that's old stuff, I promise you.

- Really?

- I'm through with that stuff.

- Where are you going tonight?

- The stories.

- You know we have that Catholic Charities ball

tomorrow night.

- I remember.

- There'll be a lot of really important people there

I want you to meet.

Sweetie, I just want what's best for you.

I want you to be someone important.

I want you to do something with your life.

- I gotta go, Mom.

See you tomorrow morning.

- I love you.

- I love you.

(upbeat music) (crowd chatters)

- Hey, Rob.

- Hey, Josh, how you doing?

- Alright.

Lot of bridge and tunnel people here tonight.

- Yeah, Jersey queens.

- Hi, Rob.

Hey, you remember me?

I, um, I met you at Mary's party.

- You're a friend of Chloe's, right?

- Yeah.

- How's Parisian life, she having fun yet?

- Yeah, she loves Paris.

- Hey, do me a favor, say hello for me.

Give me a call sometime.

- Great, I will.

Thanks.

- Hey, kid. - Yes?

- You got Jersey girl that's high on drugs.

Wanna ask 'em to leave?

- Yeah, sure, Mr. Dorrian.

(guests shouting)

- Rotten afterparty.

- Would you come outside for a minute, please?

- What for?

- I just wanna talk to you.

- We could take him.

- Look, my friend Mr. Dorrian says

you guys are making too much noise

and he wants you to leave, all right?

(hand smacks)

What did you hit me for, man?

I didn't hit you.

- Nice talking to you.

- Why did you get violent then?

- That was awful.

- Why didn't you hit him back?

- Hi, Rob. - Hi, Rob.

Meet me inside, okay?

Is something wrong?

Inside?

Go for a walk?

What happened?

So, Betsy and I are both gonna go to Boston for college.

I'm gonna go to Chamberlain Junior College

and she's gonna go to BU.

I've already saved up $1,600.

I'm really excited.

- I just got kicked out of BU.

- You did, why?

- I didn't study.

What's Chamberlain?

- It's a fashion college.

I wanna get into designing and marketing.

- [Robert] These girls look like you.

- Well, yeah, what do you expect?

I wanna dress the world.

You're supposed to.

What, you think I'm crazy?

- No.

Are you stoned?

- No, I don't do drugs.

I'm just naturally nuts.

You have to go home?

- No, my mother doesn't get home until morning

because she's a private nurse.

She used to work for Cardinal Cook when he died.

Now she's with someone senior.

- Well, at least you get to hear a lot

of juicy church gossip.

- Disappointed in me.

Never satisfied with what I'm doing, and now...

I just lost my job.

- I work at Foodies, I can see if they need some help.

You can come down tomorrow afternoon.

- No, I can't.

I have to go with my mother

to the Catholic Charities Bowl tomorrow.

- Parents divorced?

- Yeah.

- So are mine.

I love my father and I get really along with my mother,

but I just wanna be with one guy.

I mean, no divorce from me, just one man forever.

Rob?

You seem sad.

Don't be sad.

(gentle music)

(couple kisses)

(camera clicks)

Wake up.

- What'd you do?

- I took a picture.

- Why?

- 'Cause you looked sweet.

(couple kisses)

- [Alex] Tell me everything.

- [Jen] Tell you everything?

- Yes.

- Like what?

- I don't know, details, I want some details.

- Well, he's really good looking and sexy.

And the first time we were together, he just rubbed my back.

We didn't even have sex.

But you know...

I don't know, you know?

I don't know if I like him as a person.

I don't always feel comfortable around him.

I mean, he's different than Paul.

With Paul, I'm always really comfortable

and that's wonderful, I love that.

- Well, do you think that you're having an affair

with Robert to prove to yourself

that you're not completely dependent on Paul?

- Well, do you think Robert likes me?

- Of course he likes you.

You're a beautiful person, how could he not?

- (laughs) Oh, gross.

- [Alex] (laughs) Oh, thanks.

- Listen, what should I do?

Should I just go up to him and kiss him?

Should I go over and start talking?

- Talk to him.

- Okay, but listen, Alex,

can I stay at your house tonight, right?

- Yeah, right, I'll leave the key in the usual place.

- Okay, good.

(friends laugh)

(calm music) (crowd chatters)

You know what I have to tell you?

You are the best sex I've ever had.

- Heads up, coming through.

- You shouldn't have said that to me.

(crowd chatters)

- How long ago?

- Guys.

- What, what happened?

- I just told Robert Chambers

that he was the best sex I ever had.

He said I shouldn't have said that,

then he turned his back on me.

- That's not right, Jen, I'd stay away.

Don't push it anymore.

- I know, I know.

But Betsy, please go tell him to meet me outside.

- Jen, me?

I don't wanna get in the middle of this.

I don't even condone this relationship.

- I know, but you know this is really important to me.

- No, no, no.

- Betsy, come on, come on.

- All right, all right.

Jennifer wants to talk to you outside.

- No, I can't.

- Why, what's the big deal?

- Can't keep walking in and out, Dorrian's watching.

- You're right.

- Look, every time I go out, he thinks I'm doing toot, okay?

- You know, that is the biggest lie.

If you had to be out there for any other reason,

you know you would be there.

(sighs) Look, do whatever you want.

I don't care.

- Be right back, okay? - Bob!

(upbeat music) (crowd chatters)

โ™ช Oh, the night is my world โ™ช

โ™ช City light painted girl โ™ช

โ™ช In the day nothing matters โ™ช

โ™ช It's the night time that flatters โ™ช

โ™ช I, I live among the creatures of the night โ™ช

โ™ช I haven't got the will to try and fight โ™ช

- Josh, where you going?

- Go outside, get some air.

- I'm going with you.

- How are you?

- All right, I finally paid that bar tab off tonight.

- What are you looking for?

- I thought I had a joint.

You have a joint?

- Didn't you just get outta rehab?

- Yeah.

- What for?

- Coke.

- I hate coke.

It generates you the lowest aspects of your personality.

I hate it.

- Yeah, I made a lot of mistakes.

- It's alright.

Some of the best people get outta rehab.

- Gentlemen. - Yeah, no, I just got out

of the same rehab my father was in for alcohol.

- Are you still doing coke?

- Not really.

- Rob, didn't they tell you you're not supposed to go back

to the people and the places

that brought you there in the first place?

Why don't you, why don't you go to school,

do something, get an education?

- I'm applying to Columbia tomorrow.

- Alright, that's great, that's great.

Look, it's 11:30.

Why don't you go back in there,

say goodnight to your friends,

don't try to get laid, don't try to score any blow.

Just go home, go to sleep.

Look in your handbook,

see what kind of classes you want to take.

Rob.

- Yeah, right.

- My feelings have validity

just as much as your feelings have validity.

I just need to know that I'm being taken seriously.

โ™ช He brought the clouds to my day โ™ช

โ™ช Then like a ray of light โ™ช

- Oh, Mr. Dorrian, I think I'm in love.

- Jennifer, you can do better.

- I don't know about that.

- You have 20 guys better than that before you're married.

Forget him.

- I'm going home with Kurt.

- Okay, so should I wait a while before I come home?

Okay.

- I love you. - I love you too.

Bye, Kurt.

- Hey, come on.

Now, things can't be that bad.

Come on.

- I'm just so sick and tired

of being one thing for one person and another for another.

- Hi.

How are you?

- I'm alright.

- Good.

I'm around, you know, if you wanna talk.

- Okay, thanks.

(hand smacks)

- Here.

You could just use those on somebody else

because you are not going to get a chance to use them on me!

- Oh my God, this is what I'm talking about.

This is ridiculous.

Just go home.

I'm going.

You gonna stay or you gonna go?

All right, forget it.

- Here, hold on, I'll walk you.

(crowd chatters)

โ™ช And I'd never dreamed that I'd lose somebody like you โ™ช

โ™ช No, I don't wanna fall in love โ™ช

โ™ช This world is only gonna break your heart โ™ช

โ™ช No, I don't wanna fall in love โ™ช

โ™ช This world is only gonna break your heart โ™ช

โ™ช With you โ™ช

โ™ช This world is only gonna break your heart โ™ช

โ™ช With you โ™ช

โ™ช This world is only gonna break your heart โ™ช

โ™ช No, I โ™ช

โ™ช This world is only gonna break your heart โ™ช

โ™ช This world is only gonna break your heart โ™ช

โ™ช Nobody loves no one โ™ช

(radio chatters)

- What is it, what happened?

(siren wails)

- It's a dead girl.

- [Jogger] How'd she get dead?

- [Robert] I dunno.

(siren wails)

(crowd chatters)

- Lieutenant, do you have a comment to make, sir?

We're on the air, could you talk with us, please?

- Who are you?

- Homicide.

- I have to have your names.

- I'm Sheehan, this is Quinn.

Manhattan North Homicide.

- Whoa, whoa, where you going?

- Look, you know like the robbery squad?

They go in and they, they look for fingerprints

and stuff like that in the store?

- Yeah.

- The safe squad, they examine safes.

The auto squad examines auto.

Do you understand all that?

- Yeah.

- So we're the homicide squad.

Our business has to do with the dead body,

so we're gonna take a look.

- If it's okay with you.

- And when you figure that out,

you come talk to us, all right?

- Good work. - Sure.

- Get a shot of over here.

How you doing, fellas?

- All right, guys.

- What a beating she took.

- Brutal.

- Yeah, we have a theory.

See those car tracks over there?

I figure she's a prostitute.

Gang raped her and threw her out the window of the car.

- [Joe] That a fact?

- Yeah.

Thing is, I can't figure is the garrison belt.

You know what I mean?

The garrison belt on a girl.

- Garrison belt, what, are you crazy?

This is a designer belt.

It costs more than everything you're wearing.

- Oh yeah?

- Yeah.

And another thing I want to show you.

Italian shoes.

It's a fancy blouse.

Brand name skirt.

When you look at a body, you look at the clothes,

it tells you a lot about the person.

And look at the tan on this kid, perfect lines.

She's well groomed.

This is rich kid stuff.

Come here a minute.

- Any ID?

- Look, she was dumped out of a car

and I'm assuming you mean these tracks here?

- Yeah.

- They're not gonna carry her over there.

Do you see any tracks over there?

- No, well, no.

- Don't worry about it, okay?

We'll sit down, we'll talk about it sometime.

- Pal.

Bag her hands.

- Just one more shot.

- You got some ID?

- Yeah, a couple.

Name is Jennifer Levin.

This one has her at 18, this one 22.

She fought hard for her life, that's for sure.

That's one hell of a violent struggle, Mike.

- How are you?

- I want you two guys to get down to Soho to the family.

- Where do they live?

- Mercer Street, it's on the ID.

All right, somebody in that family's gotta be taken over

to the morgue to identify the body.

- Oh, haven't you got a couple of guys there now?

- They're gone.

All right, get down there, okay?

Down there and call me.

- [Mike] Don't worry.

- Jack, Rudy.

(door clanks)

(knocks)

- It's homicide, can we come in?

- [Speaker] (cries) Yeah.

- My name's Detective Mike Sheehan.

This is Detective Quinn.

Look, I don't know what to say to you,

but for whatever it's worth,

if there's anything at all that we can do...

(family cries)

- It can't be.

Not my Jennifer, not in Central Park.

It's insane.

Not my baby.

Oh my God.

- Now, look, if you need anything at all in the coming days,

I live very close, in Tribeca.

I...

I have a card.

It's got my home phone number on it.

Don't hesitate to call.

- Where was Jennifer's room?

Do you mind if we take a look?

- When was the last time you saw your daughter?

- She was staying at, at the Hamptons with a friend.

Um, Alex.

Alex LaGatta.

Steve already told the other detectives

and I, I think they went to speak to her.

- Alex LaGatta?

Do you mind if I use your phone?

Thank you.

- Is it okay if I go through her things here?

I don't wanna pry into your daughter's life

or anything like that.

- [Mike] I'm at the house now.

- It's gonna help us find this son of a...

Whoever did this to her.

- Look all you want.

- Thanks.

- [Mike] Detective Sheehan.

- Where was she last night?

- She was at Alex's

and, um, I guess they went out to a restaurant.

- Detectives Griggs and Polumbo are talking

to Alex right now.

- Steve, uh,

a member of the family has to go to the morgue,

get a positive ID.

- Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no way.

No, I can't see Jennifer in the morgue.

No, absolutely not, I want to remember her the way she was.

I'm sorry, no, I can't.

- It's okay, it's okay.

Officers, I'm Steve's brother.

Do you have anything on this?

- Not yet, but we've got everybody working the case.

- You find this guy, please just give him to me.

- Listen, someone has to go to the morgue.

A physical identification must be made.

- [Arnold] I'll go.

- No, Arnold, you can't.

- I'm going, that's the way it is.

Let's go.

- Who's this?

- It's Jennifer's grandfather.

- Come on!

- It's okay.

(solemn music)

- This isn't gonna be easy.

Take a look, gimme a yes or no,

and we'll get outta here as fast as we can.

- Okay.

(ominous music)

- Are you ready?

- We're ready.

Oh.

Oh my God.

- Oh, let's go, let's go, let's go.

Come on.

- (gags) Oh!

- Come on.

Come on, let's go.

(solemn music)

- Just breathe easy, take it easy.

- You take any medication?

Heart pills, anything like that?

- No.

- You all right, kid? - Yeah.

- Easy, easy, easy.

- This is it.

- [Speaker] Yeah.

Look at this.

- [Speaker] What the hell are they doing here?

Vultures. - Come on, outta the way,

come on, come on. - Let's go,

move outta the way,

come on! (siren wails)

Come on, move back, would ya?

- Is this the grandfather?

Yes, yes, get the picture, get the picture.

- Come on, outta the way, come on, let him out!

Leave him alone.

(reporters shout)

Leave him alone.

Let him through.

Get outta the way!

- Excuse me, excuse me.

Do you live in this building?

- No, I'd like to ask you-

- Then kindly please leave the elevator.

These people are grief stricken.

For God's sake, use your head.

- I wanna do my job, okay?

I wanna talk to you.

- No, not now!

- Look, you can't tell me who to talk-

- I'll tell you. - No!

(reporters shout)

(elevator clanks)

- I don't believe this.

We're stuck.

Elevator's broken.

- No, stay here.

- Mike, what are you doing?

Get the hell outta here!

- What's your precinct number?

- [Reporter] I told you, he won't talk.

- Anybody know his precinct number?

- Excuse me, excuse me.

- Look, I'm a member.

We're all brothers and sisters here.

- [Mike] Get outta here.

Sheehan.

Would you please send someone down?

(reporters shout)

- What was your daughter doing in Central Park?

- Stop annoying my family, stop ringing the buzzer.

- Can't you answer the question?

Why was Jennifer in Central Park?

Don't swing that bat at me!

- Stop!

He just lost his daughter.

Come on.

Okay, all right, Steve, take it easy, go upstairs.

Go ahead.

What's the matter with you people?

Let people live, all right?

Take a walk, get outta here.

- That animal!

Whoever did this to her, the electric chair's too good.

Oh my God, has anybody called Ellen?

- Who's Ellen?

- I'm not sure.

I think maybe it's a second wife.

- Isn't Arlene her natural mother?

- No.

- She hasn't been told yet?

- No.

- [Secretary] JW Buckingham, may I help you?

- Ellen Levin, please.

- That's right. - This is a great office.

And what do you have to say to yourself?

- Nothing. (phone buzzes)

- Yes?

- [Secretary] Ellen, it's your father on line three.

- Hi, Dad.

- Ellen.

Have you heard about the girl in Central Park?

- Yeah, it's all over the news.

Dad, wait a minute, I can't...

Shh, I can't hear him.

I'm sorry, Dad, I can't hear you.

What were you saying about the girl in Central Park?

- Ellen.

It's, it's Jennifer.

- Oh my God, no.

Oh my God, no!

No, no!

- Rob?

Hi, it's Alex LaGatta.

Is Jen there?

Do you know where she is?

Uh, okay, great, thanks.

Bye.

That's weird.

- What is it?

- Well, Robert says that,

that she spent the night with Paul,

but Paul's in Stony Brook, Long Island.

- Can I use your phone?

- Sure.

What's happening?

- We're looking for a missing girl, Jennifer Levin.

And we're trying to talk to some people

who maybe can help us.

- I saw her last night at Dorrian's.

Maybe I could help you find her.

- Yeah, that would be great, really.

Listen, would you mind coming down to the station

where we can talk?

- Well, not at all.

As a matter of fact, I have an address book

with a bunch of kids' numbers in it, maybe it can help.

- Definitely, great.

- Alright, just a minute.

- Robert!

- We'll be down in Central Park precinct, ma'am.

- You know, ma'am, it's nice that he's trying to help us.

- He's a good boy.

- Yes, he is.

- Robert.

- Mom, don't worry,

I'm just gonna go down and help these guys.

I'll be right back.

(reporters shout)

- Have you talked to any of the friends?

Mike, can you us give any information?

How's the family taking it?

- Well, what do you think, Julia?

- I didn't- - Shake it off.

- Stash him somewhere, there's no room in the cage.

- Shut up!

- How'd it go? - Not nice.

What you got?

- I had a couple of different kids in here today.

A couple of different guys in here with this kid, all right?

- Whoa.

- We spoke to this kid for over an hour.

He's a good kid.

I think we gotta cut him loose.

- Listen, you're gonna handle this other thing for me?

- Yeah.

- Okay, get on it, all right?

- Okay.

- Listen, I want you two in there, all right?

Get in there, see what you think, all right?

- Okay.

Hi.

How you doing?

Mike Sheehan.

- Robert Chambers.

- Joe Quinn.

- Anything I can do to help, I will.

- Sit down.

- Well, that's great, Rob.

Do you mind if I call you Rob?

- [Robert] It's either Rob or Robert.

- Okay, Rob.

Or do you prefer Robert?

- Either one.

- Okay, good.

I really appreciate you coming here.

- Sure.

- But before we get to this stuff,

there's one thing that's kind of mandated.

I mean, it's a lot of bull, you know?

It's...

I mean, you're a regular guy, you know,

but, well, you gotta read 'em the rights.

- You have the right to remain silent

and refuse to answer questions.

Do you understand?

- Yeah.

- And anything you do say may be used against you

in a court of law, understand that?

- Yes.

- Okay, and you have the right to consult an attorney

before speaking to the police.

Understand?

- Do you want a lawyer?

- A lawyer? - Do you?

- Of course not, of course not.

- Now, Rob, I, I see you live over on 90th Street.

- Yeah.

- You live in my neighborhood.

- Your neighborhood, huh?

- Yeah, I was born and raised on 96th Street and Madison.

- Really? - Yeah.

- So where'd you go to school?

- Where'd I go to school, where'd I go to school?

Where'd you go to school?

- I graduated from York Prep.

- [Mike] On East 85th Street?

- Right.

- [Mike] (laughs) Isn't that a wimp school?

- What's that supposed to mean?

- He's just busting your chops.

- I used to kick the crap outta the Yorkies

and take their lunch money.

(Mike laughs)

- So where'd you go to school?

- [Mike] I went to Xavier.

- Wow.

Really? - Yeah.

- You went to Xavier?

- (laughs) I went to Xavier.

- It's just a couple friends of mine.

As a matter of fact, Michael Dorrian,

the place I was at last night, Jack Dorrian's place?

His son Michael went to Xavier.

- I know Jack. - Yeah?

- Yeah, I come from the neighborhood.

By the way, what happened to you?

You got some bad scratches.

You better get some alcohol on that.

- Yeah, take a look at these.

- [Mike] Oh, Jesus.

- Oh, how did you get those?

- You're not gonna believe this.

I have this cat at home

and I was laying on my bed playing with my cat

and I tossed the thing up in the air and it freaked out.

Came down and scratched my face and chest.

- Look, I, I don't want to be stupid or anything,

but your cat,

is this a regular house cat or a mountain lion?

(Mike laughs)

- It's just a regular cat, man.

- Anyway,

tell us about Jennifer.

She's a good looking girl.

- Yeah.

- Did you ever date her?

- Yeah, every now and then.

Nothing serious.

- Did you ever, you know...

You know what I mean, you're a real swordsman.

You know what I mean?

Did you?

- Yeah.

- Really?

I hear Dorrian's got some great looking broads down there.

- Right?

- No, look, I'm a little old now, you know?

I'm starting to lose my hair, you know.

- You, what about me?

I'm turning gray.

- (laughs) You already turned.

You know, maybe I could meet you sometime.

We go down there, and you know,

you can introduce me to a couple of your throwaways,

you know what I mean? - Any night, man.

- Oh, Rob, by the way,

did you ever have any problems with the police?

- No.

As a matter of fact, one time I was a character witness

for the DA in a burglary investigation.

- Well, anyway,

let's get back to this thing here.

Why don't you take me through what happened last night?

- Well, I was there at Dorrian's

and I was supposed to meet this other chick there, Kim,

this girl I've been seeing on and off.

And I met up with some other friends

and we were having some drinks, having a good time.

And then Jennifer started really pursuing me.

You know, she was really hounding me.

- [Mike] Oh, yeah?

Maybe she likes you.

- She definitely likes me.

Then, you know, a lot of 'em do.

And lemme tell you,

she really got me in a lot of trouble with Kim.

- [Detective] How'd that happen?

- Well, Kim was there when Jennifer came up and started,

you know, hanging all over me

and kissing me right in front of her.

And Kim got upset

and she came up to me and told me to go to hell.

And then she left, and that's it.

And then Jennifer left.

I walked outta Dorrian's with Jennifer and then she left.

- That was the last time you saw Jennifer?

At Dorrian's?

- Yeah, at Dorrian's.

(upbeat music)

(reporters chatter)

(camera clicks)

- Come on, let's ask a quick question, all right?

When was the last time that you saw her?

Can we have an interview later?

- Yo, stop!

Hey, baby.

- Come with me, please.

- Go team, gonna make it to the quarter-

- Shut up!

- Too loud, man.

This guy's prints ready yet?

- What's your name?

My name is Bill.

You wanna party?

- Now, look,

we're trying to get to the bottom of this thing.

Well, maybe it was an accident.

I mean, sometimes accidents happen.

New York State law is written that way if it's accidental,

like if you were trying to protect yourself.

- Wait, wait, what do you mean?

- What I mean is you may have been in the apartment-

- Absolutely not.

No way.

Look, I already told you guys,

I walked outta Dorrian's with her

and we went up to 86 and Lexington to get a donut

and that's the last time I saw-

- What?

Wait a second, hold it a second, hold it right there.

Oh, wow, we have got problems here.

- I think this kid was being totally honest.

I really...

- And I told you that he's not telling us the whole thing.

First he tells us that he left her at Dorrian's,

now he went with her for a donut on Lex?

Come on.

You know, this is serious

because you didn't tell us this before.

Now what's it gonna be, Rob?

A half hour from now,

you're gonna tell us "I was never at the bar."

- No. - And then two hours from now,

you're gonna tell us "I didn't mean to,

but I killed her." - No, no!

- Is that what you're gonna do?

- What's my mother gonna think?

- Don't worry, kid.

These things happen.

Sometimes the chips fall against you.

I don't know what happened, but I can tell you this.

There were three people in the park.

There was Jennifer.

I can't talk to Jennifer anymore.

You wanna know why?

She's dead.

God.

God was there.

And you know, we don't talk much anymore.

But he knows, Rob, and he was there.

And you know too.

Now look, kid, I don't know what happened

and I don't think anyone's ever going to know.

I mean, what is God, is God gonna show up in court?

It's you.

I mean, whatever you tell me happened, I gotta believe.

Now, I know you probably didn't intend to kill this girl.

Come on, kid, come on.

What happened, happened.

Tell me what happened.

- And Rob, those scratches?

You see, we got a test

that can tell us if they're animal or human.

So we gotta have the truth.

- Okay.

Let's take a break.

Get something to eat.

You want something to eat, Rob?

(tense music)

- Get the rest of those kids in here today, huh?

Today.

I have to tell you again?

Well, what do you think?

- He's on the ropes.

He's gonna roll over.

- He's the one that did it?

- His wheels are turning and he wants to tell us.

He's trying to figure out a way to do it.

Trust me, he'll confess.

Needs time.

- Let's get a DA up here, Lieutenant,

with a video unit while we get some food.

I'm starving, I gotta get something to eat.

- [Speaker] I don't believe it-

- Don't delay, huh?

- Would you look at these pictures?

How could you just leave those sitting out here?

Don't you have any feelings?

Look at her, she's dead!

Can't you give her any respect?

She's dead and you just leave them lying there

so anybody can see them!

I don't wanna sit down.

No, no, let go! - Ma'am, ma'am, please.

- Stop!

- Sit down, please, sit down, relax.

(tense music)

- Robert, Robert.

Your heart's beating outta your chest.

Calm down.

Calm down.

I gotta know.

The mark on Jennifer's neck,

was that caused by something she was wearing?

Something you were wearing?

I don't understand, Rob.

Help me out.

The watch?

The watch caused a mark on Jennifer's neck?

Why, Rob?

Why?

- She hurt me.

(tense music)

(crowd chatters)

- Hey, can't get those cases you get, but I work at it!

- You were right.

He gave it up, he killed her.

Get in there and get this thing in writing

before this guy asks for a lawyer.

All right, okay, nice job.

- Okay.

So we sat under the tree

and I told her I was interested in other people,

that I wasn't interested in her.

And she freaked.

She got up and knelt down in front of me

and scratched my face.

And I got very upset

and I stood up and told her I was gonna leave.

This is crazy.

And then she said she was sorry,

you know, to please stay.

And I said, "Alright, I'll stay.

Just don't sit near me."

And then she said she had

to go to the bathroom or something.

So she went behind some bushes, I guess.

- What were you doing then?

- At that time?

Show you, I was sitting down on the ground

and I was leaning back on my arms like this.

And then she came up behind me

and she started to massage me, you know, really nice.

She was really nice when she wanted to be.

Telling me how cute I look,

but I'd look cuter if I was tied up.

Then she scooped up my arms and held 'em together like this.

- From behind?

- Well, yeah, because I was facing away.

And then she took her underwear

and wrapped it around my wrists

and locked my arms behind my back,

and she pulled me back and sat on my chest

and was facing my feet.

And then she pulled down my pants

and she started playing with me

and doing it really hard and it hurt.

And I told her to stop.

I said, "Jennifer, stop!"

And she started laughing

and digging her nails into my chest and it hurt.

And I didn't know what to do, I started screaming.

And she kept laughing, making these weird cackling noises.

She was molesting me in the park.

- Are you telling me she raped you?

- She was having her way with me.

My arms were tied behind my back.

- With her underwear?

- Yeah.

And I couldn't take the pain,

so I finally got one of my arms loose

and I reached up and I put it around her neck

and I pulled her back like this and flipped her over me.

And then she didn't move, she was just laying there.

And I thought she was kidding.

I said, "Jennifer, get up!

Jennifer, get up!"

And she didn't move.

And I didn't know what to do.

- Did you think about calling a cop?

- [Robert] No.

- Or an ambulance?

- [Robert] No.

- You just left her there?

- No, I, I got up and I walked across the street

and I sat on the fence

and I was trying to get my head together.

And then a woman came by on her bicycle

and then the cops came.

And after the cops came, there was nothing more I could do.

So I went home and I went to sleep.

- You just killed a girl and you go home and go to sleep?

- What could I do?

I told you, it was an accident.

- Where are you going?

- Are you through yet?

Can I go home now?

- No, Robert, we're not through.

You can't go anywhere.

A girl is dead.

- Look, I told you it was an accident.

- Robert.

You killed a girl.

Drop your pants.

- What?

- Come on, come on, we have to check for bruises.

Come on.

I don't see anything.

What about you?

- No, nothing.

- Pull 'em up.

Hello, Steve.

District Attorney's here.

He's gonna videotape your statement.

It's for your own protection.

Sit down.

(phone rings)

- It's on paper.

- Hey, man, you know this kid?

- This kid?

- Yeah, you know this kid?

- I never saw him before today.

What are you talking about?

- His old man's out here.

- Yeah? - Says he knows you.

- He knows me?

- He knows you from your father's bar.

Bobby Chambers.

- It's Bobby Chambers, my guy.

I didn't even know he had a kid.

- Mike.

Mike, how are you?

- Hello, Bobby.

Sit.

- I, uh, was just saying my prayer.

Whenever I'm under stress, I say it.

I'm in AA now.

That's why I haven't been coming around

to your family's bar.

- Bobby, if I, if I knew it was your kid,

I would've begged off the case.

- I know that.

How bad is it, Mike?

- It's bad, it's real bad.

He admitted to murder.

But he was treated fairly.

We read him his rights and he wasn't roughed up.

- Mike, what should I do?

- Look, I, I...

You gotta get a lawyer.

You know, a damn good lawyer.

You know what I mean?

- Good lawyers cost money.

I'm broke.

- I don't think you need a lawyer for the arraignment.

Because I'll tell you, Bobby,

I don't think they're gonna let him go.

- Can I see him?

- Sure, of course.

Come on, come on.

- Down to containment, all right?

Okay.

- Robert, your father's here.

- [Speaker] Yeah, all right, all right.

- Don't worry, I'm here.

We'll get through this together.

- That bitch!

Why didn't she just leave me alone?

- Come on, Robert, calm down.

(door slams)

(suspenseful music)

- [Tom] Well?

- It's mine.

Chambers' case is mine.

- Congratulations.

- Look at these photographs, Tom.

How could he say this was accidental?

She was brutally beaten from head to toe,

she had a black eye, her front tooth was loose.

She even had foot marks on her back.

Must have kicked her after he killed her.

This absurd story about rough sex in the park.

The autopsy proves there was no sex.

- I only wish we could get Chambers on the stand.

- Litman will never put him on the stand.

I wanna interview every kid that knew Chambers

and knew Jennifer.

Get Sheehan on this.

(traffic rumbles)

- I want character references from everyone,

from his parish priest to the janitor in your building.

Robert's teachers, his friends, their parents,

his aunts, his uncles, grandfather, grandmother.

I want 30 or 40 letters.

Then I'll excerpt the best quotes

in my own affidavit to the judge.

He'll have to read the letters at least twice

before we even go in and ask for bail.

The district attorney's only gonna stand up and talk,

and by then, the judge will have absorbed all

of this positive information about Robert.

Now, here's a letter that you can use as a reference.

- I got a call from a detective from the 19 squad

who saw a picture of Chambers in the newspaper.

Now, she tells me she questioned him as a suspect

in a series of burglaries on the Upper East Side.

- You're kidding.

- No, I'm not kidding.

He told me he was only a character witness

in a burglary investigation.

- Amazing.

What a con artist.

Find out everything you can on this kid.

I want ammo for the bail hearing.

It's like there's two Roberts, am I right?

This kid's a Jekyll and Hyde.

- It was definitely a pathological lie.

You know what I think happened in the park?

There was no sex.

I think it could have been a robbery.

Her earrings were missing.

She was wearing them at Dorrian's.

Where did they go?

Her wallet was empty.

Her girlfriend said she had a lot of cash at Dorrian,

you know what I mean?

- Robert Chambers today pleaded not guilty

to three charges of burglary.

His fingerprints had been discovered

in the looted East Side apartments.

Appearing in court with Chambers was David Fillyaw,

also accused in the cases.

Robert Chambers, at six five and 200 pounds,

said of David Fillyaw, five six, 140 pounds,

"He forced me into it."

- [Speaker] Mike, turn it off, will you?

- I hope they put him away for the rest of his life.

- [Reporter] And now here's Bill with-

- What if it was an accident?

- How can you say that?

Your friend is dead!

- I know,

but none of us know exactly what happened that night.

You know, I can't see him making this stuff up.

What if he accidentally killed her

and he didn't know what to do

and he was so scared he just ran away from it all,

and now he's gonna feel the guilt for the rest of his life?

- He is not gonna feel guilty about it!

He killed her.

Jennifer is dead!

I mean, it's not like there's another way

that you can think about this.

He's just got you fooled, just like everyone else.

- Your Honor, it would be a terrible blow

to Jennifer's family if her killer were allowed

to walk the streets free.

- Your Honor, those letters attest to Robert's character.

The headmaster at St. David's says, and I quote,

"He was a dream student."

- That was in the seventh grade.

- Also the Archbishop of Newark.

And I'm quoting, "There is a special gentleness to Robert,

a very special respect for persons,

an unwillingness to cause pain."

- [Linda] Your Honor,

this is not a pristine lily white kid with no prior record.

He committed three burglaries.

- Allegedly committed three burglaries.

Your Honor, detectives questioned him months ago

and decided not to arrest him.

He made himself available for a lineup,

but they never brought him in.

This whole thing only became an issue

after he was arrested on this homicide.

And the very fact that he has made himself available

during their investigation proves

that Robert is trustworthy.

- Trustworthy?

Your Honor, he's a drug user, a thief,

and a deranged killer.

- Ms. Fairstein's recourse

to hyperbole and rhetoric does not undermine the fact

that Robert will always appear

to answer any charges brought by legal authorities.

Your Honor, Father Leonard is here

and I urge the court, quite apart from the setting of bail,

to set as a condition of bail

that Robert remain in the custody of the church.

Father Leonard is willing to attest

to his willingness to supervise Robert's whereabouts

if he were to stay in the church.

(car honks)

- I can't believe Chambers got bail.

- Hello. - Hey, guys.

What are you having?

- It's amazing, he's out on the street.

- Yeah.

- Litman's the guy I'd hire if I were up on a murder charge.

And he's only lost one murder case his whole career.

- Fairstein's not too bad either.

- She's lost six cases.

This is her first homicide.

Hey, how much you wanna bet Litman wins?

Come on, 20 bucks.

- Hey guys, wait a minute, lemme hear this.

- [Reporter] Then he had crossed the East Drive

and taken his seat on the low wall

behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art

and watched as the body was discovered.

- See, is that your piece or Russ?

- No, it's Russ.

Great stuff, great stuff.

- You know what I can't figure out is why the church wants

to get in the middle of this.

I mean, this isn't exactly a case with a lot of sides to it.

- Robert's mother's very active in the church.

- Hey, what's with Jack Dorrian?

I heard he put up bail.

- Ask Jack.

- You know, Mikey, Litman, how is he gonna try this case?

He gonna try this case the same way

as he tried Bonnie Garland?

You know, the Yale murder

where he put the actual victim on trial?

- I wouldn't put it past him.

- Do you guys remember what he did

in the Bonnie Garland trial?

One of the interviews,

he said he had to taint her a little bit.

Can you imagine what he's gonna do to Jennifer?

- He's gonna make that poor kid responsible

for her own murder.

Well, quite an angle, we'll see.

- Hi.

- Hello, Jack.

- You give me involuntary manslaughter,

unintentional manslaughter,

a sentence in that range that'll cover this indictment,

the burglaries, and anything else you claim he did,

and I'll plead guilty and spare the state a trial.

- No.

This is murder.

This is heinous.

He's a thug and a killer.

I want 25 to life.

I'm not giving you anything.

- Okay.

See you in court.

- Yes, you will.

- Hi, Candace, I'm Mike Sheehan.

- Look, I told you, I have nothing to say.

- Look, you could have been this girl,

that ever crossed your mind?

You never saw the body, did you?

Why don't you come down to the DA's office with me

and I'll show the pictures to you?

- Whatever happened there happened.

I know Rob, he was a very nice guy to me.

- Candace, why don't you tell him?

Why are you sticking up for this jerk?

- Shut up, will you?

Look, I just want this whole thing to pass me by.

I don't want any part of it.

- No, no, it's too late for that.

You are a part of it.

Now look, I've been trying to be nice.

You want a subpoena?

Is that what you want?

You want to drag this thing through the court,

through the press?

You want that?

Be my guest.

I know he ripped you off and used your credit cards.

- How do you know that?

I never reported it.

You told him?

- Yes.

Candace, can't you see that Robert's a slime?

- You still like this guy?

He stole from you.

He killed your friend.

How could you still like him?

(car honks)

- "Levin kept a sex diary

to record kinky and aggressive sexual activity

with many lovers."

And Litman says that I told him about it!

- Linda, don't let him get to you.

- He's doing this to contaminate the public.

He knows there's nothing in the diary.

- [Speaker] Well, of course, but by planting the idea-

- Sex diary, kinky and aggressive,

these words are gonna stay in people's minds.

(phone rings)

Hello?

- Linda?

It's Ellen.

Why are they doing this to Jennifer?

The things they're saying about her

in the paper are a disgrace.

Linda, she was my baby, my child.

(cries) She wasn't like that.

She was a good girl.

It's so unfair.

- [Linda] It is unfair.

I'm as mad as you are.

- [Ellen] You've gotta do something to stop this.

She can't defend herself.

- Ellen, where are you?

Do you want some company?

- Are you gonna put Robert on the stand?

I want you to tear him apart.

I want you to get the truth.

- Ellen.

I don't think Litman is going to put Robert on the stand

because of his prior bad acts.

- [Ellen] I don't understand.

- Because if Robert takes the stand,

I can ask him about those burglaries.

If he never testifies, I can't by law bring them up.

- You mean we can't tell the jury

that he's a thief and a drug addict?

- [Linda] No, we can't.

- What kind of justice is this?

(Ellen screams)

- Your Honor, please,

please don't let Litman have my daughter's daybook.

There's nothing in it.

Believe me.

But he'll turn it into something by my giving it to him.

- [Jack] It's important I see the book

for the rights of the defendant.

- What about Jennifer's rights of privacy?

- Rights of privacy, Mr. Levin, end when a person dies.

- God, who makes these rules?

This is insane.

You're killing her all over again!

- Your Honor, I have examined this diary

and there is nothing sexual in it.

And I never told Mr. Litman there was.

I've even sworn to it and signed an affidavit.

- [Jack] If you have nothing to hide,

then let me read the book.

- You're calling Mr. Levin a liar.

- It's an invasion of privacy!

- Your Honor.

- Your Honor, if there are any indications

of unusual sexual activity, it goes to the question

whether Robert Chambers has the right

to use force to prevent it.

- For God's sake!

- All right, that's enough.

I direct that the book in question be produced

for the court's eyes only.

I'll read it and decide-

- Respectfully, Your Honor, it's not your job.

It's my job as defense counselor to determine if the-

- Your job, Jack, right now,

is to wait until I read the book.

Mr. Levin.

Please.

- You said you were going home.

I spent all day long phoning your house today,

but there was no answer.

You moved back in, right?

- Yes, I did, because the trial started.

Look, I didn't get a chance to call you

'cause I was in Litman's office all day.

I'm sorry.

But I'm glad to be outta that rectory.

So how was Florida?

You're so lucky.

I can't even leave the city.

- Here.

(laughs)

And I brought you the sand from the beach like you asked.

- I don't believe this.

The press is so one-sided.

All her friends are talking to them

and they won't stop bothering my mother and me.

I wish this never happened.

When this is over,

I just wanna be this really successful person.

- [Protester] We want this kid behind bars!

(protesters chant)

- Mike, what do you think we're gonna see?

Any surprises, any surprises at all?

- [Protesters] Justice for Jennifer, justice for Jennifer!

- All rise.

- Be seated.

Ms. Fairstein, do you wish to address the court?

- Yes, Your Honor.

Madam Forelady, ladies and gentlemen,

Jennifer Levin is dead.

But you've known that since media headlines screamed

that fact at the city just hours after her body was found.

But now for the very first time,

you will learn the true facts

and the circumstances surrounding the murder

of Jennifer Levin.

Since her death,

the story told by this defendant has been broadcast

to the public without contradiction.

A preposterous story which makes a vibrant 18-year-old girl

the agent of her own death.

A story which reeks of inconsistencies and lies,

which you will see him tell on a video tape recording

barely 18 hours after her death without a shred of remorse.

The defendant, by his account of the events,

would have this be the case

of the people versus Jennifer Levin.

It is not that.

He is the defendant.

And she is dead.

Don't lose sight of that fact.

- [Jack] When Robert and Jennifer Levin left that night,

you knew they were gonna spend the night together,

didn't you?

- Yes, I did.

- Indeed, on her way out, you said to Jennifer,

"We know what it is you're going to do," didn't you?

- Yes.

I did.

- [Jack] Do you ever remember describing to anyone

that Jennifer Levin was physically flirtatious?

- [Alex] Yes.

- [Jack] And was that someone a person

who then wrote a magazine article?

- Yes, that was.

- Now, had you discussed with Jennifer

whether or not Robert Chambers was good looking?

- We had both admitted that we thought he was good looking.

- Did Jennifer tell you that Robert was good sexually?

- Yeah, yeah, she did.

- [Jack] And did she also tell you

that she didn't like him as a person?

- She told...

- Did she tell you that?

- Yes.

She told me.

(crowd chants)

(Alex sobs)

- Miss LaGatta.

You gonna be all right?

Take it easy.

- Pathetic, the way we were.

All those girls were so insecure.

We were all mixed up.

We had too much money.

We had screwed up worlds and everybody...

I don't know.

- [Protesters] Justice for Jennifer, justice for Jennifer!

- If I may make an analogy,

I would say that Robert is a blank tableau

on which images were projected onto him by women.

And so in a sense, he became an ideal boyfriend.

- Analogy, tableau.

How well did you know him?

- Oh, very well.

I saw him almost every night.

- Yeah, but what can you tell me I don't already know?

- Plenty, for the right price.

- So what about these kids with their free lifestyles?

What about their parents?

Don't the parents care what they do?

- Kids don't know what the hell they're doing,

their parents are divorced.

(translator speaking in foreign language)

Sometimes two or three different times, they're divorced.

(translator speaking in foreign language)

They have so many different kids from different families,

they lose track of them.

(translator speaking in foreign language)

Kids run around so much, they get home so late,

their parents are going to work.

Sure, they cross paths, but they never really meet.

(translator speaking in foreign language)

You know what I mean?

- [Linda] And tell us, Dr. Spitz, if you have an opinion

as to how the injury to Ms. Levin's eye was caused?

- [Dr. Spitz] The injury to Ms. Levin's eye was caused

by a punch.

- And is it also your opinion

that there were nail marks on Ms. Levin's face and neck?

- There's no question about that, yes.

- And you're aware that there was blood found

on Ms. Levin's nails, is that correct?

- [Dr. Spitz] Yes.

- Doctor, based on the physical condition of Jennifer Levin

and the physical condition of the defendant

as you observed him in the photographs,

do you have an opinion

as to whether sudden death was involved

as a cause in Ms. Levin's death?

- [Jack] Objection, Your Honor.

- I'll allow it.

Go ahead.

- There was no sudden death.

There's absolute evidence

of a prolonged, very intense struggle.

- Dr. Kornblum, are you the Chief Medical Examiner

in Los Angeles?

- [Dr. Kornblum] I am.

- Are the injuries you see on Ms. Levin's body consistent

with a violent struggle?

- They are not consistent with that.

- [Jack] And why is that?

- [Dr. Kornblum] The wounds are superficial.

They're not the type you see

when someone is giving a struggle.

- Well, what in your opinion was the cause of death?

- [Dr. Kornblum] She died as a result of compression

of the neck caused by an arm choke hold

when she was flipped over.

- [Speaker] Steven, don't.

- What's going on?

(gavel bangs) - Order!

Order in the court.

This court will recess until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.

(reporters shout)

- [Reporter] Mr. Levin, Mr. Levin, would you like...

- Mike.

Mike. - Mike.

(door bangs)

(fists smack)

- Frank, what's going on?

- Come on, Frank, we gotta make a living.

What are you doing?

- Give us, give us a break.

- It's occupied.

- [Reporter] Occupied, what do you mean?

You keep people out the bathroom?

Come on.

They're the parents, come on.

- [Speaker] Come on, let's get outta here.

Thanks a lot.

- Look at this.

Is this really news?

Does your editor call this news?

- It was a slow day, what can I tell you?

- Where'd you get this picture?

I mean, there's no cameras allowed in the courtroom.

- It's an old photo.

But look, we cropped the eyes.

I think it works though, don't you?

- [Mike] Guess it sells some papers.

- Guess what, man?

There's a videotape floating around of you know who.

- Chambers with Jennifer?

- No, no, no, just Chambers.

It was done afterwards.

It was a party and he was the star of it.

- Mate, we've gotta get that.

- Oh, you best believe it.

From what I hear, it's dynamax.

It's gonna blow the case wide open.

- Wow.

- Hey, guys, what's up?

What are you whispering about?

- Don't worry about it.

- [Speaker] "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves."

- Testimony in the preppie murder case concluded this week

as Dr. Kornblum, the defense's key witness,

stunned the courtroom as he totally refuted the testimony

of the medical expert,

leaving the jury to decide, was it accidental or deliberate?

However, if it was accidental,

how then did Jennifer Levin receive multiple wounds

and contusions?

- I don't know what's going on.

It's gotta be one of the longest deliberations in Manhattan

for a single defendant charged with a single crime.

It's unusual for it to go on nine days.

I gotta go.

Your Honor.

(reporters shout)

I was on the phone.

- Please.

- I don't know anything about it.

I already told you, okay?

- If you're worried about having been there,

I know you weren't there, but I know Shawn was there,

and I know she told you about it.

- Well, then why don't you ask her about it?

- Listen, you ever thought about being in television?

All kinds, no, I'm serious,

all kinds of entry level jobs in news.

I can help you out with that.

You help me, I'm gonna help you out.

I'm a great friend.

Call me, will you?

- How's he doing, how's Robert?

Have you spoken to him? - Yes, I spoke to him.

- When was the last time you spoke with him?

- I dunno.

- What did he say? - Speak to him today?

- What'd he say?

- Yeah, I spoke to him today.

- Is he nervous? - No, he's not nervous.

(chair creaks)

- I don't know how to tell you this.

There's chaos in the jury room.

They can't decide.

- What is wrong with them?

- Wait a minute.

Are you saying...

Are you saying that there may be a mistrial?

Oh my God.

- What does that mean?

We go through this all over again?

No.

No, I can't.

I can't go through another trial.

I cannot sit there

and listen to Litman tear Jennifer apart anymore.

- I agree.

We've got to put...

We've got to put this thing behind us.

This has to come to an end, Linda.

Now what can we get?

- Are you sure you wanna do this?

- Absolutely.

What can we get?

- Manslaughter one.

- How much would he get?

- As low as two to six or as high as six to 18.

I would fight for at least five to 15,

and he'd go right to jail.

- Okay.

But I want him to admit in court

that he intended to hurt Jennifer and to kill her.

- I want eight and a third to 25.

- No, two to six.

- No, six to 18.

And he must surrender tonight.

- No.

Five to 15, and he gets to go home tonight.

I want him to spend the night

with his friends and his family.

And then tomorrow he can surrender like a gentleman.

Your Honor, this has to be a part of it.

And the sentence must not only cover the burglaries,

but anything else they're gonna say he ever did in his life

up through today.

- Mr. Litman?

- Your Honor, we withdraw the plea of not guilty,

and instead enter a plea

of guilty to manslaughter in the first degree.

(audience shouts)

(gavel bangs) - Order, order!

- On the three counts of burglary in the second degree,

we plead guilty to one count.

- [Judge] Ms. Fairstein?

- The plea is acceptable to the people.

(audience groans)

- It is agreed that the sentence

to be imposed upon my client will be one

of not less than five years and not more than 15 years

on both guilty pleas to run concurrently.

(audience groans)

(gavel bangs)

- [Judge] Will the defendant please rise?

Do you plead guilty to manslaughter in the first degree?

- Yes, Your Honor.

- Is it true, Mr. Chambers, that on August 26th, 1986,

you intended to cause serious physical injury

to Jennifer Levin and thereby caused her death?

- Looking back on everything, I'd have to say yes.

But in my heart, I didn't intend for anything to happen.

- Your Honor, I want you to ask him

about his mind and his hands, not his heart.

- Please, Mr. Chambers, answer directly.

Is it true that on August 26th, 1986,

you intended to cause serious physical injury

to Jennifer Levin and thereby caused her death?

- Yes, Your Honor.

- Did you see him shaking his head?

- [Judge] Is it true, Mr. Chambers-

- He doesn't mean what he's saying, forcing him to say it.

- That on August 26th, 1986,

you intended to cause serious physical injury

to Jennifer Levin and thereby caused her death?

- Yes, Your Honor.

- [Judge] Formal sentencing is set for April 15th.

(gavel bangs) Court's adjourned.

(calm music) (guests chatter)

- Hey. - Hi.

- Nice to see ya, Jack.

Fellas.

- Okay, all right now?

- Thank you so much.

- Thank you very much, Jack.

- Congratulations, you did well.

- Mr. Chambers, please stand up.

Do you wish to address the court

before you're sentenced on charges number 639486?

- Yes, Your Honor.

Today, we came to see the end of a trial.

A trial with no answers and a trial with no winners.

And Jennifer's looking down on this circus arena

and wondering why it all happened.

And I don't know.

I never wished for it to happen

and I never wanted it to happen.

But her name will live on, and not through her memories,

but in her family and her feelings.

And I wish to apologize for all they've gone through.

- All right, you have to remain standing, Mr. Chambers.

There isn't much left for the court to say

other than I feel sorry for the defendant's family

and for the Levin family.

The defendant's family, of course,

is in a little better position.

The Levin family, the father and the mother will never see

their daughter again.

But Mr. Chambers will be back on the streets of New York.

And I hope that when he does,

he will conduct himself appropriately

as a law abiding citizen.

(knocks)

- I got it, Mom!

- We gotta go, come on.

- Mike, you wait for us down in the lobby.

- I'll wait right here.

- Okay, have a seat.

- Yeah, make it quick.

- Mike?

Do you know anyone who can help Robert

if he gets into trouble in prison?

- Mrs. Chambers, he's a big guy.

He'll be all right if he keeps his nose clean.

Frank, here's a bulletproof vest for the kid.

- What?

- There's one extra, I think you should put it on.

- You really think these are necessary?

- You work the courts, I work the street.

It's my suggestion.

- Well, thanks, Mike, but I don't think so.

- There's a lot of angry people out there

that might want to hurt you.

It only takes one.

Remember Jack Ruby?

- Robert, come on.

- We'll take him in my car.

- I don't think that's a good idea.

- Listen, he's not in custody till we get him downtown.

We go in my car.

- All right, suit yourself.

Ready, kid?

- Hell of a crowd. - Let's go, come on.

Make a hole, let's go.

(crowd shouts) (dramatic music)

(cars honk)

- Give us a kiss, mate.

- You got it? - Absolutely.

- (laughs) Yo.

- [Reporter] The preppie death in Central Park,

Jennifer Levin strangled.

The trial froze New York.

Now, a shocking, bizarre home movie starring Robert Chambers

and young female friends.

A tape Chambers made

as he was about to go on trial for murder.

Scenes of charades, joviality.

- Hello everyone, I'm Maury Povich.

Welcome to "A Current Affair."

(friends laugh)

- All right, I got one, I got one, all right?

- Four words.

First word.

(Robert groans)

Death, death.

- "Death of a Salesman."

Yeah, "Death of a Salesman."

Come here, come here, put this on.

I'll tell everyone.

- So I'll say you're lying.

People will believe me.

- No.

- [Robert] Get away from my hair.

Come here.

Hang on.

โ™ช Oh, Rock, Rock, Rock and Roll High School โ™ช

โ™ช Rock, Rock, Rock and Roll High School โ™ช

- [Speaker] We're gonna rewind and record.

- My name is...

Oops.

I think I killed her.

(dramatic music)

(upbeat music)

(upbeat music continues)

(calm music)
