Well, maybe she had something to do with

Well, we're pretty traditional here.

We're into what's called the building
blocks of education.

There's plenty of room for creativity,
too. In fact, sometimes the results are

interesting. How?

Well, for instance, Mr.

Lindsay's fifth grade class did some
essays.

You know, an English assignment.

He took for a theme, Once Upon a Time in
1970.

Most of them were born that year.

One boy wrote how air transportation had
changed during his lifetime.

Mind you, this is a boy who thought the
jumbo jets were a primitive form of

transportation.

Well, anyway, the kids felt they were
pretty hot stuff.

They all thought they were ready to be
full -time authors.

So Mr. Lindsay sent the essays out to
some publishers.

You know, to give them the experience
of... Of rejection. I know the feeling.

Don't we all?

Well, in a month's time, they did
collect eight rejection slips and one

publication. Oh, terrific.

They're being published in April.

A small book, but a book.

Yeah. I've been sort of toying with the
idea of playing up the female union

organizer. She and the publisher are
fighting, but then they start to like

other. Joe, this is essentially a piece
about the people's love for a newspaper.

That's the romance I want.

I found that instead of compensating for
a story's weaknesses, you should go

with its strengths.

This is a tragedy. The loss of a
newspaper.

And I really felt it.

It would be a powerful movie of the

You know, when most people ask me what I
do, and I say I teach, they ask me what

grade. And when I tell them it's the
fifth grade, they look at me kind of

like it's suspect for a man to be
teaching little kids.

All I have to say is that the last
couple of years have been terrific,
