The city engineer has come out against
this project.

The Department of Public Safety has
recommended against this project.

And now today, we have 600 signatures on
this petition, which we intend to

present to Supervisor Corwin.

Poor guy.

Supervisor Corwin.

He's up for re -election.

He's got all those city officials
against him.

No, you don't understand how it works
here. He's got them outnumbered.

And L .A. County supervisors like a
king.

That's why Corwin gave up his job as
state senator four years ago to become a

supervisor. I'll say this.

The guy's got guts.

Corwin, right into the lion's den.

I don't usually make a habit of crashing
parties.

I came here today because I know how
strongly all of you feel about this

I have a duty as your supervisor to the
people of this community, and one of the

first duties of government is to protect
its people.

Now, I've lived in this area for 43
years, and I know the kind of

flooding that a heavy rain can cause.

I remember the Tigertail Canyon flood of
1968 when three people died in

mudslides, and I know that this
picturesque...

trickling little stream can, in one of
our rains, turn into a raging torrent.

And if one person, one child, should die
in a flood which could have been...

When he leaves, I want you to get in the
way of Keene and the other raids, so I

can open him to get to the supervisor.

Now, I just wanted to tell you, face to
face, how I felt about this.

Supervisor, why do you feel there's a
flood danger here when the Department of

Public Safety doesn't?

Ask them.

I have asked them. You haven't explained
why you know more than the city's own

engineers. Is this one of your usual
tactics, Mr. Rossi, trying to ride

to get a story that isn't there? Look,
if you can't answer... I have nothing to

say to the press, which I haven't just
said to my constituents in person.

Some of the things that have happened in
them have caused a lot of complaints.

relative you were especially close to?

Sure. Well, for me, it was my
grandfather.

His last years were very difficult.

But, of course, in those days, it isn't
like now. We didn't automatically stick

older people in homes. They stayed with
the families.

But we were very poor.

My mother had to work.

There was no way that she could handle
my grandfather, because at that point he

needed a lot of attention.

So we put him in a home.

I must have been seven, eight, and I was
terribly upset.

But my mother told me that he'd be all
right, because where he was going...

They treat them just like family, and
that's the key. I think all nursing

should be treating their residents just
like family.

Pretty risky stand to take in an
election year, isn't it?

Well, I'm here to make a pitch for this
problem, to get maximum attention from

your newspaper.

It's one of the most drastic charges

home investments.

So do a lot of people.

My own family, in fact.

There's nothing wrong with that.

something which is essentially designed

care for the sick and elderly.

and legitimate, but the ones that are
rip -offs.

Well, that's why the supervisor is
investigating those facilities, Joe.

It's got to throw a crowbar into your
