presentation, Inquest on a Murder and

Ourselves.

Most of us here in the city saw this
picture in our morning newspaper four

ago.

We learned that a young woman had been
heard talking, arguing for about a half

an hour the previous night between 11
and 11 .30 p .m., arguing with some man

Sutter Park and then crying out for
help.

Now, dozens of people in the apartment
buildings surrounding the park,

northeast, southwest, heard her call
out, but nobody went to help her.

When finally someone did, the police
were notified.

They came and...

She was shockingly, shamefully dead.

Murdered. A murder that didn't have to
happen. A murder that is still unsolved

tonight.

And there are many questions still
unanswered. One, what was the victim

the park that hour of the night?

And who was the man she was arguing
with?

And most of all, why didn't somebody,
one of us, go to help when they heard

young woman cry out?

Okay, Fred, on two, ready to pen the
guess. Okay, two. Nice and easy. Dead

but the character of our city and its
people, we have some distinguished

with us this evening. And take two. Dr.
Albert Bartheim, one of the nation's

foremost psychiatrists, author of a
number of important books on criminals

their motivations.

The Honorable James Lowry, United States
Congressman from this very district

where the murder took place.

And on my left, Mrs. Millicent Pyle,
widow of the much -worn theologian and

social thinker Dr. Grayson Pyle herself,
both an urbanologist and religious

activist.

And finally, the man in personal charge
of this investigation, Chief Robert

Ironside.

I'll be talking with all of our guests
as the hour develops.

And also, since our program is not only
a discussion of the meaning,

and the morality behind this crime, but
part of a continuing police

investigation, I've asked Chief Ironside
to feel free to interrupt at any time,

use the program in any way which it may
help.

surface by something that may be said

but were too uncertain about to say

The point is, a killer is at large, but
he hasn't gotten away.

Now, this murder was clearly a crime of
passion committed by an amateur, and

amateurs make mistakes.

I'm sure this man did.

I'm also sure that all of us, together,
know enough to isolate him and to run

him down.

That's why I'm here tonight.

To me, this is not a television program,
not a circus.

It is part of a manhunt.

We each know something.

Together, we can know all.

Together, we can find the killer.

Mary Belmont.

This is how she looked alive.

25 years old, part -time art student,
part -time waitress at Creighton State

College, about 75 miles from here.

Among the things we do know about her is
that she took the bus to San Francisco

once a week, always returning home late
the same night.

But on this particular night, she met a
man.

This man.

Who is he?

This is all the police department artist
has had to go on so far.

A few details remembered after the fact
by some of the people in the apartment

buildings around the murder park.

No particular feature yet to distinguish
the killer.

Well, this much we do have.

One person recalls that the...

Man seems to have been about, oh, seven
or eight inches taller than the girl.

Ready to roll, Phil? Ready to roll. The
people in that building, they saw

little, but they heard a lot.

Why then was there a 25 -minute lag
before the police were caught?

And several more minutes before the
first and only person actually ran in to

and help that girl?

We've tried to find answers to those
questions from some of the people who

to talk to us.

One, Mrs. Bertha Merz, who lives in
apartment 3B, front.

my dog.

I couldn't see them. They were on the
other side of the wall.

Our cities are becoming jungles.

I know that somebody's got to turn
things around.

Three other tenants in that building
wouldn't talk to our reporters.

However, in an apartment building on the
west side of the park, Mrs. Martin

Lucas in 2B did open her door.

I didn't know what was going on at
first.

I don't like to pry into the personal
affairs of others.

I'm a very private person myself.

Well, according to the police records,
you were the first person who actually

did call the police and said there was a
girl in trouble.

Yes, I did.

But too late.

Were you alone at the time?

Yes. No, my husband was home. Yeah, I'll
hold.

And then there was that last scream, and
I reacted instinctively. I guess I

called the police.

I really don't feel comfortable saying
anything else.

Regret is an easy, often cheap emotion.

Too late, too late, too late. That seems
to be the theme running through these

interviews.

Even among those people who did try to
do something one way or another, like

Mrs. Lucas.

It's also there, among other regrets, in
the story of the one person who seems

to have tried the most.

This young man... He just turned and
stared at him. That part was finished.

He went over and poured himself another
drink.

Now he's just standing there watching
the TV set.

Also, more importantly, because Chief
Ironside specifically wanted the young

This is Jimmy Sanders, young track and
football star whose picture you also saw

in the morning papers after the murder.

He's the young man who did rush out into
that park to answer Mary Belmont's

final scream.

Jimmy... I must say that by making a
human response, you became the closest

thing we have to a hero in this tragic
story. One. I don't feel like one.

I heard that creep in the bushes. I
thought I heard him in the bushes, and I

went after him.

But I tripped. When I got up, he was
gone.

And there she was.

Yes, yes, but you tried, Jimmy.

That's part of the reason for this
program, to search into...

Why most people didn't try soon enough.
Why the one person who did, you, was the

youngest.

Dr. Bartheim, is the age factor
significant here?

Are our young people perhaps less
embittered and interdirected by the

Well, I wouldn't want to prove anything
by a statistic of one.

There's no doubt that young people are
less.

Being chicken had nothing to do with it.

You couldn't help that man getting away.

Temporarily getting away, that is.

I doubt if it'll give Mary Belmont's
killer much comfort.

And you deserve it to be said publicly.

We are convinced you couldn't have
caught up with that man.

It's our working theory.

But he eluded you because he knew the
area intimately.

He was able to lose himself in the dark
and slip into one of the apartment

buildings.

One of the apartment buildings

A few hundred feet in any direction.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean
that the man lives there or is one of

your neighbors, Jimmy.

Miss Weiner, we know that Miss Belmont
spoke to you several times in the last

month. In fact, she phoned just a few
hours before her last trip to this city.

Would you please tell us about that

didn't go to the police.

They somehow found me.

And besides, Mary was already dead, so I
felt I could somehow help by telling

Well, there was some place in San
Francisco with a mailing address.

That's how they got messages to each

She couldn't call him at home, of
course, or where he worked. I suppose he

afraid of his wife finding out somehow.

Anyway, Mary was awfully upset, and her
idea was to leave the drawing there,

wherever, before she talked to him.

It was pathetic. I mean, it was so
desperate.

She was going to leave a note with the
drawing saying how would he like it if

she sent a copy of this and a letter to
his wife.

But honestly, I could tell that this was
just some kind of game she was playing

with herself.

All she wanted was reassurance. She
didn't want it to end at all.

She sounded so erratic, and I tried to
talk her out of going, but I couldn't.

And I couldn't leave the hotline either.

You did your job, Miss Weiner.

I think television is correctly doing

It's hard to make the public understand.

I don't want to preempt the clergy's

I have enough problems trying to
maintain my own responsibilities, but I

think this is all a matter of a national
loss of faith. It's a vicious circle.

The people see so much crime news,
they've lost faith in themselves as the

abiding.

The overworked police in turn seem to
have lost faith in their old ability to

maintain law and order because of the
public's attitude.

Because of this whole business of court
decisions and arrest.

Finally, the circle becomes complete.

A people reflecting the change in the
police's attitude.

The growing anger and the cynicism.

Losing faith in the police?

I have to differ with you, Congressman.

Young people like Sandy Weiner and Jimmy
Sanders, they didn't lose faith, they

tried.

Dozens of policemen all over this city
following up leads you don't know about.

They haven't quit either.

Those people in our audience who are
beginning to call us.

Those who may have seen Mary Belmont at

In fact, we saw Mr.

Lucas' wife earlier this evening in one
of our film clip interviews, and she was

one of the first persons who called in
to the police. Isn't that correct, Mr.

Lucas? Yes.

But unfortunately, as my wife said, the
call was too late.

Mr. Lucas came to our studio because the
sight of Mary Belmont, the pictures we

showed, triggered his memory.

I really don't know if it's important.

I know him. He always asks me about the
team.

This happened maybe, oh, ten days ago.

Ten days or a week before that girl...
Well, that is

before it happened.

And that also fit in when I started
remembering. You said she came to the

If you saw enough of the girl to match

clearly.

from the street was mainly hitting her.

But, I mean, I did see something.

drawing was made by our police artist.

Admittedly, very incomplete.

Now, do you think you could add anything

Well, the man I saw seemed quite average
looking.

Perhaps a bit taller than average.

Perhaps a bit thinner.

And as for features, it seemed to me his
nose was longer than that.

He's almost describing himself.

If somebody else did see the girl in
him, it'll seem to back up what he said.
