Original subtitles

Thank you.

What is this? What's going on?

Police.

Close your mouth, American.

That's better, Mr.

Collier.

Much better.

You'll come with us.

We say sailing is just a matter of aerodynamics.

Well, it helps if you know something about the parallelogram of forces.

To every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction.

Right. There's material on it in advance.

Good morning, Jim. Three months ago, an Englishman named George Stanton was

murdered in his home in Istanbul, where he was living in exile, apparently on

the proceeds of his investments.

A corrupt Turkish police officer, Lieutenant Yusuf Hamadou, was rewarded

promotion to captain and control of Istanbul's major prison for his prompt

arrest of the alleged murderer.

It was a particularly brutal crime.

Stanton was shot gun.

The Turkish courts have sentenced the alleged killer to death, but we believe

he's innocent and that Hamadou himself was somehow involved with the crime.

The condemned man is scheduled to be hanged at dawn three days from today in

this prison.

Your mission, Jim, should you choose to accept it, is to obtain the release of

the condemned man and to bring the corrupt Captain Hamadou to justice.

There is one more thing you must be told, Jim.

The alleged killer... is a past member of your team. As always, should you or

any of your I .M. force be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any

knowledge of your actions.

This disc will self -destruct in five seconds.

Good luck, Jim.

Center of this mission, Barney Collier.

He's an old friend of mine, and he's Grant's father.

He's been convicted of murder. He's in a Turkish prison awaiting execution.

Turkey? Well, that's a long way from anywhere.

Well, after Mom died a couple of years ago, I guess that's where Dad wanted to

be.

Just a long way from anywhere.

The man who arrested him is this man.

Captain Yusuf Hamadou.

He's built his career with corruption and bribery and murder.

We think that he was in some sort of business arrangement with the murdered

We don't know what it was. We do know that he expected to make a lot of money

from it. Then it's not likely he's the actual murderer.

But if he isn't, then why would he bother to frame someone else?

That's one of the answers we have to find.

Now, this lady may be the key.

Lydia Adem.

She claimed to be your father's lover.

She told a judge and jury that he went to the murdered man's house the night of

the murder, that he was in a highly agitated state when he came back, that

were bloodstains on his clothing. That's a lie.

She was lying.

She wasn't my father's lover.

And my father never murdered anyone.

Grant, I don't know that you should be a part of this.

Emotion can cloud your judgment. The slightest mistake in your father's life

in the balance.

He's my father.

I need to be a part of this.

Yes, and he's my friend.

And we're going to get him out of there.

Ooh, people.

Ooh, very difficult.

The man I'll be bringing with me is Collier's son.

You make it hard to refuse.

It will have to be this afternoon.

Hamidou will be away.

He'll be there.

That's an honest but unhappy man.

Hope we can use that to our advantage later on.

That's Lieutenant Serlock. He was in charge of the prison before he was

and Hamadou took over.

Take a look over your right shoulder at the lady.

Lydia Dent.

That's right. She owns this place.

This is where your father was arrested.

Jim, is that you?

Did you really think we were going to let you rot in a place like this?

I've given up hope. I've been trying to send messages for months.

But one of them finally got through.

And look at you.

Hell, you quit before I did.

If any of us really quit for good, I got someone else to see you.

needed some time alone.

And believe me, I never murdered anybody.

We know that.

We're gonna get you out of here.

Oh, sure. Tomorrow morning in a pine box.

Barney, you really have been here too long.

You're going out of here on your own two feet.

We've got the team and we've got the technology and we've got your son.

These are the pictures we took in Dad's cell.

All right, now you see the colors give us the exact contour of every section of

the wall, which allows the computer to duplicate the texture onto latex.

That's great work, Grant.

Instant wall.

Now it's up to Nicholas and Max.

I receive no warning of your visit.

What happened to the usual priest?

Oh, he's already talked to Mr. Collier without much success. He feels, since we

were Americans, perhaps we could help this man in his great... You see,

I myself teach at the American College in Rome. And we're here on a sort of

busman's holiday studying the history of the Byzantine Rite.

Which is a fascinating subject.

Unless, of course, you happen to be Muslim.

Well, I suppose in a quiet... It wouldn't matter. I think the Byzantine

fascinating no matter what. Please!

Not just what is it you wish of me.

Why, to see the prisoner, of course.

I'm afraid that isn't possible.

All things are possible with the help of God.

Believe me, Father, it would be a waste of time.

The man is to be executed in less than an hour. You can see him then.

Captain, he may only have one hour in this lifetime, but he has an eternity

in the next. we only ask for a few minutes so that he may have a chance to

for forgiveness.

But of course, Captain, if it would be better for your records, we could always

make our request formally through the American Embassy.

Lieutenant.

Take them to the prisoner, Collier. Give them ten minutes, no more.

Thank you, Lieutenant.

Captain.

Courier.

Priests to see you.

We are from the mission, my son.

Grant us a little of your time.

It would be a great comfort to me, Father.

We'd like some privacy.

Please.

Give them ten minutes.

No more.

We should introduce ourselves.

Nicholas Black.

I'm Max.

We can't get you out of here right now, so we're going to do the next best

thing.

had the place sealed until the estate settled.

The scene of the crime.

Yeah.

Why don't you start in there? I'll take care of it.

If they can't find you, they can't hang you.

Pressures of the Cathedral of St. Sophia.

A golden diamond necklace reported to have belonged to Catherine, Zarina of

the Russians.

And stolen from the cathedral four months ago.

I think we may just have found the motive for Stanton's murder.

His mind was at peace.

And we will leave him now.

To meditate on his sins.

You will not be forgotten, my son.

I pray that your mission will be successful.

Correct.

Correct?

We just called to see Mr.

Stanton, but nobody's answering.

Turn around and put your hands on your head.

Sell it empty.

This is your fault, you incompetent fool.

You're in charge of security.

Now, if he is not found, you'll be going to the gallows in his place.

Some dealer!

Sergeant President!

Cover the guard at the gate.

One moment.

What is it? There's something wrong with this wall.

This one.

We should call the captain!

This fool says he allowed you to visit the prisoner Collier yesterday.

Well, we thought maybe Collier would give us a lead on the necklace, but he

didn't want to talk to us about it.

Get out.

I don't believe you, Mr. Travis.

I think you are an accessory to Stanton's murder and perhaps Collier's

Captain, I've told you we are private investigators.

Employed by who?

That information is confidential.

Prisons can make life very ugly for beautiful women like yourself.

Our client is a wealthy private collector of fine arts and jewelry.

He doesn't care that that jewelry is stolen?

Well, the niceties of the law are not one of my client's stronger points.

Tell me, Mr. Travis, why would your client think after so much time since

necklace was stolen you could come to Istanbul and find it?

Because an offer was made three weeks ago to sell it to him.

Three weeks ago?

Who made such an offer?

Well, we don't know. The offer was in writing, no name attached.

It simply said if I showed up on Istanbul, I'd be contacted.

Perhaps, Mr. Travis, it's time you and I discussed a deal in the interest of

keeping you and your beautiful assistant out of prison.

How are you feeling?

I'm doing just fine, Jim.

You get as much rest as you can. We're going to need you.

We're going to have to be careful. Casey and I just had an unexpected run -in

with Captain Amadou.

Seems this whole thing turns on a stolen $10 million necklace.

Well, that could explain how Amadou had expected to become so wealthy.

Exactly. But now that he's got the scent again, he's dangerous.

What we have to do is put the pressure on Lydia.

We have to force her hand.

We're on our way to the cafe to put a tap on Lydia's arm. You'd better stay

behind.

Ernie, you know what we need?

We need you to confront Lydia.

Give me a couple of days to get my strength back.

I'll confront her.

The problem is we don't have a couple of days.

Grant, can you fill your father's shoes?

I think I was nine, ten.

Grandma was still alive then.

I remember she used to have to take a bus and transfer, take another bus just

get to our house.

She used to bring Jamie and me candy and presents.

She couldn't afford them.

Mom used to get mad.

Because the candy would give us cavities.

Hey, hey, you remember when Mom...

Sorry, Dad.

The past couple of years, I thought about all those broken promises.

They buried the woman that I have loved ever since.

I didn't even know she was dead until a week later.

You were doing your job.

You have to be quiet for a moment, okay?

I remember that birthday you were talking about.

It was your ninth.

I was on a mission, and I had promised to be there.

By the time I finally got home, your mother told me that you had stayed awake

long time.

Because you had something important to tell me.

But you fell asleep.

And I had to leave an hour later.

Hold on.

It was just late. I've been trying to tell you my whole life, Dad.

I love you, man.

I love you too, son.

And when I grew up, I wanted to be just like you.

How'd I do?

Dream just once, Lydia, and I'll kill you.

I thought you were... You thought I'd been hanged.

Are you disappointed, Lydia?

Why'd you set me up? Why did you send me to Stanton's apartment?

You knew he'd be dead when I got there.

No! You put that shotgun in my car.

No, it wasn't me, Barney. It wasn't me, I promise.

Whose gun was it?

The man who has the necklace?

I don't know what you're talking about.

What do you want from me? I'll tell you what I want from you.

Nobody please tell you.

I'll be back.

And you tell me who has the necklace or you'll pay for it with your life.

He's making a call.

Hello?

Hello? I told you not to call.

Collier was here.

He can't be. He's in prison. I'm telling you, he was here. He was going to kill

me. Collier wouldn't kill anyone.

He knows I framed him. He knows about the necklace.

All right, Lydia.

You'd better come over here to be safe.

Here we go.

Everything's falling apart.

Calm down.

It's going to be all right. No, it's not.

Collier's desperate. He could do anything.

Let's go inside.

You take the back.

Right.

We've got to get away from here. We've got to leave the country now.

Look at my face.

I have to stay hidden until it heals.

We can't take the risk.

Well, let me go then, please. I've done everything you've wanted.

I gave you Collier as a scapegoat. I found you this place.

And now I'm in danger.

He's going to kill me.

He really frightened you, didn't he?

Did you tell him about the necklace?

No, he already knew.

Just give me my share.

I'll wait for you in Paris.

How can I give you your share until I sell it?

I'm frightened.

I'm scared you'll make me tell him everything about the necklace, the

and you.

I'm frightened too, Lydia.

That's why.

You had to die.

Who are you?

What has she told you?

Enough.

We know about the necklace, collier, everything.

We?

You don't think I'm in this alone, do you?

It really doesn't matter.

I'm a friend of Bernie Collier's.

He was framed, wasn't he?

Lydia, you were hurt very badly.

And he's an innocent man.

I didn't want to.

Who made you?

George. George Stanton?

Yes.

He and Hamadou stole the necklace.

But Stanton's the man that was murdered.

No. He made it look that way.

It's a double -cross, Amadou.

Yeah.

George, it's to me.

He's dead.

Both of them.

Jim, he had extensive plastic surgery.

And he was wearing these.

Contact lenses.

Tinted brown.

Disguised the color of his eyes, which were blue. The same color as George

Stanton's.

He was George Stanton.

He faked his own death. He framed Barney. He changed his face. And all to

his partner, Hamadou, out of his share of the necklace.

Which is what I presume they're looking for.

Nick, look, over here.

2 ,400 right, 2 ,450 left. Exactly the same as the contact lenses.

How you doing?

I'm fine, sir. Well, we have Stanton's photo.

How do the frames match?

Perfect.

It is beautiful.

They say the diamonds are long worth $10 million.

And at $10 million in the lives of four security guards, Stanton and Hamadou

killed when they stole it. But Jim, not as Stanton as really did.

There's nobody to clear me.

I'm not so sure, Barney.

Stanton came back from the dead once.

I think it's time for an encore performance.

I called and the woman said to meet the man here if I wanted to buy the necklace

back. I realized immediately it had to be Conner.

He's asking a million dollars.

Perhaps there is another

way, Mr. Travis.

You and I could work together.

The rewards would be substantial.

The rewards, Captain?

The Tsarina's necklace.

It could be yours and mine.

Five million dollars profit each.

And best of all, you could go on living.

But how do we get it from Collier?

Collier doesn't have the necklace.

Stanton does.

Stanton's dead.

Oh, no, Mr. Travis.

Stanton is very much alive.

Well, if that's true, then Collier is guilty of nothing.

Collier is guilty of being a fool, and he'll hang yet.

Don't you be a fool, Mr. Travis.

Stanton will be contacting you again.

And when he does, we'll both be rich men.

Nicholas and Max have set up the recording equipment.

As long as you're within 200 yards, they'll pick up everything you say.

Then I think it's time for a reunion.

Call Lieutenant Surlock in exactly 30 minutes.

Tell him if he wants to be in charge of his prison again, please show up when we

ask.

Captain Hamadou, this is Travis.

Got a call from our mutual friend.

He wants to meet.

Good to be back, son.

Sir, I think...

It's all

set.

All we have to do now is wait for Amadou.

What I can't understand is how the police could believe the body was

Must have been some very good Stanton phone somewhere, a man with no papers,

record. And Stanton killed him with a shotgun blast to the face.

Making identification extremely difficult.

Yeah, but not impossible. I mean, fingerprints.

Surely you must have known.

He had no Turkish records.

And his fingerprints on fire with a British thumb were all that disappeared.

In fact, it was only today I realized how cleverly convenient that was.

You will stay here.

But Stan will be expecting me. You will stay here.

Claudia.

I was expecting someone else.

Patton, you'll be waiting a long time. He's dead.

I'm afraid he's been playing games with us.

He's alive, I can assure you of that.

He spoke to Travis less than half an hour ago.

You're wrong.

It's me who's been playing games.

Why? What do you want from me?

I want to make a deal.

The necklace for my freedom.

You established my innocence.

How's Bernie doing?

She's great.

All I do is respond imperfectly.

Where is it?

Do we have a deal?

My freedom?

All right, we've got a deal. Now, where is it?

Uh -uh.

You have to get me there and let me in.

Let you in?

Oh.

The cell.

It's hidden in your cell.

And it's been there all the time.

I didn't say that.

Oh, you didn't have to.

And now I'm afraid I have no further use of you.

Then play games, Hamadou. You think you're pretty smart, Goliath.

You lied to me. You double -crossed me.

That's right.

Like Stanton double -crossed me when we stole the necklace.

And killed Beauregard.

They were expendable.

And in the way.

Like you.

We'll see who's the clever one, America.

Do you hear me?

Hear me?

Time for me to leave, Captain.

At least for tonight.

So, your face.

Anywhere in Turkey.

And you're a dead man.

The necklace is mine.

I kill for it more than once.

I kill for it again.

I think Captain Hamadou is about to get exactly what he deserves.

Come on, come on, come on.

Now, get up.

It has to be here somewhere.

I know it.

Where is it? Where did you put it, Kalia?

or the Nexus.

And killed four guards.

They were expendable and in the way, like you.

The Tsarina's necklace.

Motive behind six deaths.

Let's hear that last part again.

You're in your cell.

It is you, Captain Hamidou, who will be in cell.

And for a very long time.

You... You have it, don't you?

Is this what you were looking for?

It seems I will be governor of the jail after all.

And you will be my first guest.

for this servant.

I am the governor of this jail.

Do you hear me?

The governor!

This is my prison!

You're a free man, Barney.

Thanks, Jill.

Grant, I think it's time you took your father home.

On Mission Impossible.

Each of us has been trained since childhood to carry out the purest plan.

The future.

Legacy.

Casey, you're about to become royalty. I was assured in Geneva that you could

provide a great deal of personal service.

What's the penalty for murder in Switzerland?

Wife imprisonment. Do you have the coded numbers, of course?

971 -306.

Your number, von Schau. You have ten seconds.

This is Joan London. And Charles Gibson.

Ever wonder why you crave chocolate and other sweet temptations? This week, a

look at America's sugar -coated romance.

Plus Bill Collins and Andy Williams on Good Morning America.
