other groups got involved.

The Turkesh got involved, the NOMLAC,
a series of groups

which claimed responsibility
for the kidnapping.

Unfortunately, nothing came from this.

It was the beginning
of a very frustrating time.

More than ten years with no evidence,

no news, with the family
waiting for something which never came.

[Pietro] Then in 1993, we got a call.

My dad and I go to the magistrates'.

And they tell us,
"Do you think this could be Emanuela?"

They showed us a photo. It was this one.

[pensive music]

[Pietro] These photos had been taken
from inside a convent. In Luxembourg.

-[mouse clicks]

It was a girl, a novice,
a girl about to take her vows.

[Natalina] You think
she's shut away in a room.

My mom said,

"They like brainwashed her, so she's alive
and well, but can't remember us."

"That's why she doesn't reach out to us."

[keyboard clacking]

[Pietro] The Magistrates said,
"Don't say anything,

don't speak to anyone."

I remember I furiously rushed
to get these plane tickets,

and me, my dad, and my mom left.

[intense music]

[keyboard clacking]

[airplane whooshing]

[Pietro] We got to Luxembourg.

I had a quick look around the shops,

and this little object caught my eye.

Two penguins made of marble dust.

One was little, and the other was bigger.

And they were hugging.

That was the hug I've wanted
to give my sister for ten years.

We stayed at home with Federica.
Me, Federica, and Natalina,

And I still remember we slept
in Mom and Dad's bed with Federica.

[clock ticking]

[car door opens]

[car door closes]

[Pietro] The next day,

the local police and Interpol
surrounded this convent…

and they took her somewhere else…

[tape player whirring]

…to meet with my mom.

[tense music]

[clock ticking]

[Pietro] I vividly remember
that the Head of the Flying Squad,

Mr. Cavaliere, was there with us.

I remember he called Rome
and spoke to a journalist,

I don't remember who.

"Get ready,
because we're bringing Emanuela home."

[tape player whirring]

The door opens.

[slow suspenseful music]

-[clock ticking]
-[heart thumping]

[phone ringing]

[ringing continues]

It took me a second
to see my mother's face,

to understand that it wasn't Emanuela.

[tape player whirring]

[Pietro] They both cried,
they started to cry,

both of them, my mother and her.

And we went back home with this,
with this sadness,

ready to start over.

[airplane whooshing loudly]

[crowd cheering, applauding]

[tense music]

[Pietro] My father died in 2004.

He had always had faith,

thinking that investigators
and the Vatican

were going to somehow help us

bring Emanuela home.

But, before he died…

he said, "I was betrayed
by those I served."

[journalist 1] This is a CBS News

[Pietro] Pope John Paul died a year later.

[journalist 2] The funeral
of Pope John Paul II.

[journalist 3] What you're looking at now,
again, are live pictures

of St. Peter's Square
outside St. Peter's Basilica.

With the funeral of Pope John Paul.

You see Prince Charles there.

[journalist 4] The body
of Pope John Paul II

lies tonight beneath St. Peter's Basilica,

near what are believed to be the remains
of St. Peter himself.

[Andrea] Probably a lot of people
in the Vatican

thought the secret is buried forever.

[bells tolling in distance]

[Andrea] And it is interesting

that a few weeks after the Pope dies,

suddenly, a new witness emerges.

[Raffaella] My name is Raffaella Notariale

and I'm a reporter
with the program Chi l'ha visto?,

one of the longest-running programs
on RAI,

which is the Italian state TV channel.

[in Italian] When, last July, we came back

to this complex and unresolved case,

the case of Emanuela Orlandi…

[Notariale in English] In 2005, 22 years

after Emanuela Orlandi's disappearance,
a message was left for me

on the television program
answering machine.

We don't know who left this message.

I'll play it for you.

[man in Italian]
"Regarding Emanuela Orlandi,

to find the solution to the case,

investigate who is buried
in the crypt of Sant'Apollinare Basilica

and the favor Renatino did
for Cardinal Poletti at the time."

[Andrea in English]
There were many tip-offs,

but this one was very strange,

and very important.

If you want to know what's behind
the disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi,

you get to go to see who's buried

into the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare.

-[mouse clicks]

[Notariale] I had no idea
which Basilica this was.

I then discovered that it's a basilica

at the center of Rome,

In front of Piazza Navona.

And, incredibly,
next to Emanuela's music school.

[suspenseful music]

It's the last place Emanuela surely was,

before disappearing forever.

I went to the Basilica

and there was some work
being done to the facade.

I had a look around to see

how I could get down
to where the crypts were.

[echoing footsteps]

The crypt was to the right of the nave,

inside this little room,
there was a big white marble sarcophagus.

[door opens heavily]

In front of the sarcophagus,
in big letters,

there was a name, Enrico De Pedis.

Everyone in Rome knew
who Enrico De Pedis was.

[keyboard clacking]

[Andrea] Enrico Renatino De Pedis

was the most powerful gangster in Rome,

the king of Rome,

the king of the underworld in Rome.

[journalist 5 in Italian]
Rome, 2 February 1990,

close to Campo de' Fiori,
Enrico De Pedis is killed.

Known as "Renatino", he was the boss
of the Banda della Magliana.

[keyboard clacking]

[Andrea in English]
The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare

is a Vatican-owned church,

and nobody can be buried inside,

unless you have a special permission

or you made
a very big favor to the Vatican.

What was the favor
the anonymous caller spoke about

on the message to Chi l'ha visto?

[man in Italian] "…and the favor
Renatino did to Cardinal Poletti

at that time."

[Notariale in English] I absolutely
had to work out what the links were

between the Vatican,
the Banda della Magliana,

and Emanuela Orlandi.

So, I got my computer
and started looking up

"Banda della Magliana."

-[keyboard clacking]
-[suspenseful music]

"Renatino."

[keyboard clacking]

And I found out that in 1984,

the police arrested him by following
his lover,

Sabrina Minardi.

[suspenseful music]

[Notariale] I tracked down her address.

I was 28 at the time.

When I was 50 meters away
from her address,

I called the senior editor
at Chi l'ha visto?

and I said, "Listen,
I am at Sabrina Minardi's house,

if I don't call you in an hour,

send someone
because something has happened."

I get there, and there's a doorman.

I asked him, "Excuse me,
I'm looking for Sabrina Minardi."

He looks at me and says,
"She hasn't lived here for some time now."

So I pretend I believed him
and walked away.

I wait for lunchtime.

All the doormen in Rome take a break.

[suspenseful music]

[hurried footsteps]

I go door to door to see

whether they have the names
and surnames of the people living there,

outside of the apartments.

I get to the top,
and the surname "Minardi"

is nowhere to be found.

So I go back down,

and there were three apartments
with no name on the doorbell.

I knock at the first.

A lady answers, "Who's there?"
I introduced myself.

"I'm Raffaella Notariale, a journalist.

Can I come in?"

So she opens the door.

[door lock clicking]

She pats me down, my tummy,
my hips, my back.

She reaches just below my breast
and goes back down.

She reaches my backside and goes back up.

She was checking for a microphone,

if I had something on me.

[suspenseful music]

She says, "Okay, come in."

[Pope in Italian] I would like
to express the heartfelt feeling

with which I join the Orlandi family…

[Sabrina in English]
My name is Sabrina Minardi.

I was the lover
of Enrico Renatino De Pedis,

the boss of the Banda della Magliana.

[Sabrina] I met De Pedis
in a piano bar called La Cabala.

I was 22 years old.

[tape player whirring]

[Italian song playing]

[Sabrina] I went there one night,

I remember I was wearing
this beautiful black dress,

and a really beautiful mink fur over it.

[singing in Italian]

[cheering and applauding]

[pensive music]

A bottle of champagne
was brought to my table,

and the only person looking over
at me was this gentleman,

leaning against the bar.

We left together.

And he asked me to go out,
the following evening.

[distant car honking]

He was exuberant, he was cultured,

and he didn't do drugs.

Then one morning,
after barely a month of dating,

I opened the paper and saw his face.

It said that he was wanted
for eight murders.

[sirens blaring]

[Sabrina] He said, "No,
I've never hurt anyone."

And I believed him.

It must have been love.

[chuckles]

Well, it wasn't easy.

And I ended up
getting completely sucked into it.

[tape player whirring]

[reporter 1 in Italian]
Welcome back everyone.

African high pressure
is affecting the Lazio region…

[Pietro in English] Emanuela went missing
on June 22nd, 1983.

[Sabrina] It was a summer's day, in 1983.

And I had started using a lot of coke.

[clears throat]

[heart thumping]

[Sabrina] Renato and I
went to a lake nearby.

ROME - EUR

[tense music]

[tape clicks, whirrs]

[Pietro] Before leaving school,
Emanuela calls home…

[Federica] …to tell me that a man
had approached her outside of school…

[Mauro] …then he parked his car,

which was described as a green BMW…

Then, his driver came.

And the girl was there.

[interviewer] You didn't know
who this girl was?

No.

And he came up close
to me and said, "Listen,

we've got to take this girl to yours

in Torvaianica for a few days."

He says, "Okay? Two or three days."

I said, "Fine."

And so it was.

My parents had a house

in Torvaianica, which is a little town
half an hour outside of Rome.

[suspenseful music]

[Sabrina] A detached house.

[heart thumping]

-[car revving]
-[car door opens]

[car door closes]

Then a lady named Adelaide came over.

And she was going
to take care of this girl.

[background radio chatter]

[Sabrina] Emanuela was in a bedroom,

she spent the whole day there.

I heard her moaning, poor thing.

Thinking about it is distressing.

But she moaned a lot.

[interviewer] Was she locked up?

Yes, she was locked up.

Mm-hmm.

[slow tense music]

[indistinct chatter on radio]

[Andrea] While Emanuela was locked up,
according to Sabrina Minardi,

the family was increasingly panicked.

[tape player whirring]

[Pietro] My father decided
to file a report

because it had gotten late,
maybe it was already…

It must have been eleven o'clock at night.

[Sabrina] This lady would go there
every so often and give her pills.

She would say, "So she behaves."

So, I think they must have been
psychopharmaceuticals,

something to keep her calm, I don't know.

[Pietro Meneguzzi in Italian]
So I said to Pietro, "Look, Pietro,

let's go take a look around Rome."

[bike rumbling]

[Sabrina in English]
Emanuela was so spaced out,

I don't know how to explain it.

She wasn't capable
of looking after herself,

because, in my opinion,

they were filling her with drugs.

[reporter 2 in Italian]
The temperature is much higher than normal

in most of Italy.

[Pietro in English] My uncle called
the newspaper Il Tempo.

[Natalina] That's when things got crazy,
all these telephone calls.

[phone rings]

[Sabrina] I recognized her
when the posters were put up in Rome.

They'd cut her hair,

but it was the same face.

This Adelaide made her food,
took care of her,

for example,
if she needed to have a shower,

I mean,

she took care of it.

Um…

Adelaide took care of it.

[Pope in Italian] I would like
to express the heartfelt feeling

with which I join the Orlandi…

[Sabrina in English] Ten days had gone by.

[Sabrina] The girl had to be moved.

[Pope in Italian] …a 15 years old girl,
who, since Wednesday 22 June,

-has not returned home.
-[clock ticking]

[car engine starts]

[interviewer in English]
Where was she moved?

As far as I know, she was moved
to a house in Monteverde,

specifically, Via Pignatelli…

where there was a house
with huge basements.

[journalist 6] All the police
and voice experts have to work on

is a tape-recorded message
received this week,

[girl in Italian]
Oh God, why? Oh God, yes.

[heavy breathing]

Why are you doing this?

[Sabrina in English]
Some time later, and almost…

summer afternoon, the sun was still out,

and De Pedis and I were in a car,
and he said,

"Go to Bar Gianicolo.
Go to Bar Gianicolo for a moment."

After a couple of minutes,
a Renault 5 arrived, driven by a woman,

with a girl inside.

With Emanuela inside, pardon me.

[suspenseful music]

There was a parked BMW
and Renato said to me,

"These are the keys to the BMW.
You have to take this girl

just below here,
to the Vatican petrol station…"

-[interviewer] To the Vatican?
-To the Vatican.

[tape player whirring]

[Pope in Italian] I would like
to express the heartfelt feeling

with which I join the Orlandi family.

[Sabrina in English]
"Where there will be a person

with a Vatican City license plate car
that will take her.

Deliver her to this person."

It's a short drive,
about five to seven minutes.

It's called The Road of a Thousand Bends

because there are so many bends.

To be honest, I thought
about letting her go, but couldn't do it.

I asked her, "What's your name?"

But she didn't answer me.

There's a big wall and a gate.

Three hundred meters on,

you'll find the Vatican.

The Vatican petrol pumps.

There was a Mercedes
with a Vatican City number plate. Black.

A priest got out,
or at least someone dressed as a priest,

with a tunic
and little buttons down the front,

and a hat with a wide brim.

So, we took the girl

and forced her to get into his car.

[car revving]

I went back to Bar Gianicolo,

I said to him,
"What mess did you rope me into?

First Torvaianica, now here.
That's Emanuela Orlandi!

I don't need posters in the streets
to tell me that. I'm not an idiot."

And he said,
"Sabri, it's all a game of power.

Don't you get that?"

I made no reply.

-[Sabrina] I knew.
-[interviewer] What did you know?

That he had relations
with the Church, with The Vatican,

with, uh, important people.

I heard her story,

over the course of a year.

I met her countless times, okay?

I believed almost all her story,

due to the amount of details,

the way she recounted something.

Other things, I think, she embellished

to make herself sound a bit more…

perhaps, brave, maybe, or,

more authoritative
than what she really was.

A pawn.

[suspenseful music]

Sabrina Minardi, ex-lover of crime boss

Renato De Pedis,

confessed that she held Emanuela hostage

in an apartment in the center of Rome.

[Pietro in English]
Of course, that changed everything.

For years, we had followed
the international terrorism theory.

Now, everything was different.

It had become…

It seemed linked
to criminal organizations in Rome.

They reopened the inquiries

based on this woman's revelations.

My name is Giovanna Petrocca.

I was the Deputy Chief
of the Rome Flying Squad in 2006,

and I tracked down Sabrina Minardi.

I didn't believe her at first.

A priest,

wearing a cassock…

personally went to pick up
a kidnapped girl

everyone in Rome and the world
was talking about?

It seemed a little far-fetched.

But I have to say, as we spoke,
as she spoke, as she told me about it,

she answered accurately,
with a recollection that was really…

admirable.

The first thing we did, we went
to retrace the Road of a Thousand Bends.

We had to confirm
where the Vatican petrol station was.

The next step was to verify the existence

of this apartment in Via Pignatelli…

where, she said,
Emanuela Orlandi had been kept.

And we immediately found out,
by examining the cadastral maps

and checking the cadaster

that the apartment had been bought

by a woman named Daniela.

[suspenseful music]

[interviewer] Who was this Daniela?

Daniela was a woman
who belonged to the group

involved with the Banda della Magliana.

[keyboards clacking]

And so, we saw that in reality,

the descriptions Sabrina had given
were truthful.

She described this apartment
very precisely,

very truthfully with regards
to what we were able to confirm.

I remember the day
I went into that apartment very well.

From the cadastral maps,

we saw that one of the walls,
I think going in,

the one on the left if I'm not mistaken,

was built afterwards
to create a little secret room.

[Giovanna] My imagination
started taking over and I saw,

scenes I didn't even want to think about.

[foreboding music]

[Federica] Over the years,
you became tougher,

because there had been
an infinite number of leads.

And in the end,

most of them have led nowhere.

So I move forward
more and more cautiously.

Either you grow thick skin,

or you don't survive.

[Federica] But, let's say,
there's one thing I'm certain about.

I think the Banda della Magliana

are involved in some way.

Twenty-two years before Sabrina Minardi

gave her testimony to the prosecutor,

I wrote an article for Corriere della Sera

saying exactly this.

[in Italian] "The investigators
seem certain of one thing.

Since the 20 July,

the kidnapping was managed
by a criminal organization,

not a political one."

[Andrea in English] So, if a gang,

a criminal gang like
the Banda della Magliana was involved,

for what reason?

I thought that possibly,

someone is trying
to get a ransom from the Vatican.

[in English] In 1983,

when Emanuela disappeared,

the Banda was divided into two branches,

the Testaccini,

from the area of Testaccio
in the center of Rome,

and the Maglianesi

from Magliana,
which is another area of Rome.

The Testaccini were led
by Renatino De Pedis.

While the Maglianesi

were led by Maurizio Abbatino…

…until 1992, when he was arrested

and became a police informer.

[mouse clicking]

[Fanelli] I am Raffaella Fanelli,
I am a journalist,

and I have written about the Mafia,

particularly
about the Banda Della Magliana.

In 2017, I went to Maurizio Abbatino,
because…

no one had been able to interview him,

no one had managed to talk to this boss.

What's more,

he had recently left
the protection program.

-[phone keyboard clacking]

[Fanelli] I bombarded him with messages
for two years.

And I think I got him in the end
because he was fed up.

[foreboding music]

When I met Abbatino, I interviewed him,
I asked about Emanuela Orlandi.

Abbatino told me about the time
he spent in detention in Villa Gina.

During his detention,

another member of Banda della Magliana

went to visit him, and…

updated him on what was going on
on the outside.

[Abbatino in Italian]
During my incarceration at Villa Gina,

Claudio Sicilia mentioned something to me.

I didn't give it too much attention,

because I had my own problems.

[in English] He said it was for money.

Money that the mafia
had given to De Pedis,

that had ended up in the Vatican banks
and had not been paid back.

[Abbatino in Italian]
Renato had a good relationship

with the Mafia in Rome.

So I know that there was money
from the Mafia,

I know there was money from Renato
that went into the Vatican coffers.

This money was never returned.
So he could have been the middleman.

[Fanelli] So, the reason
for the kidnapping

was actually all linked to money?

[Abbatino] I'm convinced
that this is the reason.

[car honking]

[Andrea in English] In 1983,

when you think about, uh,
financial scandals,

Mafia money, the Vatican Bank, corruption,

there's only one name which comes to mind.

Roberto Calvi.

[water sloshing]

Roberto Calvi.

[engine rumbling]

[Andrea] Roberto Calvi.

[train approaching]

[Larry] My name is Larry Gurwin.

In 1982, I was the London correspondent

for an American financial magazine
called Institutional Investor.

[fast-paced classical music]

Roberto Calvi was chairman
and CEO of Banco Ambrosiano,

which was, uh, one of the largest
private banks in Italy.

It was regarded by Italians
as a Catholic bank.

For that reason,
he was often referred to as God's banker,

and was closely associated
with the Vatican Bank.

The Vatican Bank was headed
by a very interesting character,

an American archbishop
named Paul Marcinkus.

Both the Pope and Archbishop Marcinkus

were strongly anti-communist.

The Soviet system promoted atheism
and was very much anti-religion.

On Thursday, the pope returned
to his native Poland…

[Larry] John Paul II was from Poland.

So, the Pope grew up in a country

dominated by,
by the atheistic, uh, Soviets.

[crowd applauding, cheering]

[Andrea] In that period,
in this Cold War scenario,

there was a-- a United States President
and a Pope who had a common interest.

[camera shutters clicking]

The collapse of the Soviet Union
and the Communist Party.

The interest of Ronald Reagan
was a political one.

The interest of the Pope
was a religious one.

[tape player clicks, whirrs]

[crowd cheering]

-[gunshots]
-[crowd screaming]

[Andrea] The date of the attempted
assassination of the Pope,

13th of May, and the hour 17:17,
correspond exactly

to the date of a very important
Catholic prophecy,

which occurred the 13th of May 1917.

The prophecy is known
as the Fatima prophecy.

Three kids, two boys and one girl,

claim that they were visited
by the Virgin Mary.

The Virgin Mary told the three teenagers

that a Pope would be killed…

-[tape player clicks, whirrs]
-[crowd screaming]

…unless the Russian empire
was brought back to the Catholic faith.

[tape player whirring]

[journalist 7] A nurse said his words
when he was wheeled

into the hospital after the attack were,

"How could they do this?"

[Andrea] From his hospital bed,
the Pope said,

"Could I forget
that the event in St. Peter's square

took place on the day of Fatima?"

The words of the Pope are very clear,

he recognizes himself
as the Pope of the prophecy,

and now he has to bring back Russia
to the Catholic faith.

The Pope and Marcinkus decided
that the best thing to do

was to channel secretly money from Vatican

to the anti-communist movements in Poland.

And the number one
anti-communist movement in Poland,

was Solidarność.

[crowd] Solidarność! Solidarność!
Solidarność! Solidarność!

[Ferruccio] My name is Ferruccio Pinotti,

I'm an investigative journalist.
I work for Corriere Della Sera.

The Pope, uh, had understood

that Solidarność
was the best way to destroy the,

the Polish dictatorship, and,

and so on, like a domino, to destroy
the Soviet Empire from the inside.

The Vatican and John Paul II, uh,

started to channel at least, uh,

200 million dollars
to the movement of Solidarność.

It was a sort of declaration of war
to the Soviet Empire.

[fast-paced classical music]

[Andrea] I mean, the Vatican was supposed
to give money to churches, to missions,

to Catholic institutions,
not to political movements.

That's why there was no way

that this could appear
on the books of the Vatican Bank.

So Bishop Marcinkus
turned to Roberto Calvi.

[Larry] The problem was, at the same time,

Calvi was heavily involved

in laundering money for organized crime.

[Andrea] According to investigations,

this is the way

Roberto Calvi's Banco Ambrosiano
worked with the Vatican Bank.

Here we have the Banco Ambrosiano,

collecting money from

private investors…

and…

Mafia.

Roberto Calvi couldn't use the money
in a free way

because the bank was subject
to foreign exchange control,

so he had an idea.

To send it to the Vatican bank.

A different state.
A state with different rules,

and a bank without any kind
of foreign exchange control.

[tape player whirrs, clicks]

[Sabrina] Through De Pedis,
I met Monsignore Marcinkus.

I had to take enormous Vuitton bags,

filled to the brim with money.

I did the whole route

up to Monsignore Marcinkus's offices,

carrying the bag.

No one stopped me.

-[interviewer] Did you meet Marcinkus?
-Of course.

[Andrea] From the Vatican Bank,
the money went

to shell companies
in order to be laundered.

[Larry] The whole concept of laundering

is to take money,
which is of criminal origin,

and disguise the origin

so that it appears to be,
quote, unquote, "clean money."

[Ferruccio] Paul Marcinkus,
together with Roberto Calvi,

built a company in Nassau, Bahamas,

where they channeled, uh,

uh, 500 million, uh, dollars of that time.

So an enormous amount of money.

[Andrea] When the money was clean,
it went back to the Vatican Bank,

and from the Vatican Bank,
back to the Banco Ambrosiano,

and to the private investors
and the Mafia with profits.

[Larry] It worked for a while.

But in the spring of 1982,
Calvi was in a desperate state.

[news in Italian] The interim commissioner
appointed by the Bank of Italy

to manage Banco Ambrosiano

is examining financial documents

which Calvi would not have been able
or willing to explain.

[Andrea in English] The Banco Ambrosiano
went into a spectacular,

tremendous bankruptcy,

losing billions and billions of lire.

[Larry] And in the midst of all this,
Calvi suddenly disappeared.

[reporter 4 in Italian]
If he had remained in Italy,

Calvi would have had
to supply explanations

on the situation
of the bank's off-shore accounts,

which appear to be losing colossal sums

towards creditors yet to be identified.

With Calvi gone,
and the board of directors disbanded,

now the only thing to do
is try to save the Banco Ambrosiano,

the most powerful Italian
private financial group.

[distant siren blaring]

[Andrea in English]
Every journalist in Italy, including me,

was trying to, to discover
where the hell he was gone.

[tense music]

[clicking]

[Larry] On the morning of Friday,
June 18th, 1982,

a postal clerk
from the Daily Express newspaper

was walking across Blackfriars Bridge

on his way to work in the city of London.

And he happened to glance down

and he saw what appeared to be a man,

the body of a man
hanging underneath the bridge.

Roberto Calvi mysteriously found

in an apparent suicide in London.

[Angela in English]
My name is Angela Gallop

and I'm a forensic scientist.

The original verdict
was that the death was a suicide,

um, and the family thought that
that was very strange, very unlikely,

because Roberto Calvi
was a very good Catholic

and it was the very last thing,
they said, that would cross his mind.

So they wanted me
to review the forensic work

in order to address the central question
of was it murder or was it suicide.

There were some very unusual aspects

to, uh, the discovery of Calvi's body.

Uh, and one of them was the fact

that Calvi had quite a lot of money
in his pockets at the time,

um, amounting to a total
of about 16,000 dollars.

And it was in various currencies.
It was in US dollars, it was in UK pounds.

It was in Austrian shillings.
There was also an Italian lira.

He was found hanging

on the end of, uh,
an orange polypropylene rope,

uh, one arm was within the scaffolding,

the rest of his body
was hanging outside the scaffolding.

When his body had been taken down,
it became perfectly clear

that there were some really large stones

uh, in his pockets, and, uh,

the suit and the trousers,
and here are four of the stones.

Uh, the fifth stone
is still in his clothing.

In other words,
his body was weighted down.

We, uh, constructed a model,

um, of the whole thing so that
we could visualize the-- the scene.

The suicide route
involves him climbing down the ladder,

crossing onto the scaffolding,

across the scaffolding,
and suspending himself at that point.

[Angela] Using a man of similar size,
similar weight to Calvi,

we had a look at the effect

of climbing down ladders
and walking across scaffolding.

[suspenseful music]

Calvi's body didn't have the sort of marks

that we got in our experiment,

the rust traces,
the yellow paint, the green paint

that we got from the scaffolding
when we did the same thing.

And so we really, as, as I say,

effectively were able to rule out suicide.

[Angela] Having established
that Roberto Calvi had been murdered,

and we thought the most likely route

would have been to take him there by boat,

uh, we decided to come up the river

and see
whether it would've been possible to do

what his murderers would have
to have done.

One of the most striking things that,
of that boat journey that night

was the turbulence of the water,

and the way that, you can see it
over there, very turbulent, boiling.

[water sloshing aggressively]

It really made me think

that whoever had murdered, uh, Calvi

with all of the difficulties
associated with getting in there

and hanging him and all the rest of it,

had really wanted to do it
under Blackfriars Bridge.

The whole thing
was so theatrical and so staged,

the rocks, and the different currencies,

which made me think
that there was a message

that his murderers were trying to send.

This was a murder with a message.

[Larry] I think there's little doubt

that the deed was done by gangsters.

It's well known that when the Mafia

murders somebody, they often…

stage the murder in such a way
as to send a message.

The currency could refer to the fact

that this was a financial scandal.

And the location
next to Blackfriars Bridge

could have significance for the Vatican.

Blackfriars refers
to an order of Catholic monks

who used to operate
near the city side of the bridge.

Mobsters were owed money by Calvi
and he didn't give it to them.

And therefore, they're sending a signal

to others who were in a position
to make them whole.

He didn't pay us back,

so this is what we did to him…

so you better pay us.

[Andrea] And now you can see
how Roberto Calvi could be

directly connected
with the kidnapping of Emanuela.

It seems that the two crimes
were committed by the same people,

the Mafia, with the same target,
the Vatican, and the same message,

"Give back our money."
