Von erich was seriously injured-

he just couldn't take it anymor.

I loved the wrestling business ,

but it's not that important.

Fritz was the main event.

He was a huge star in the 50s a,

I was born into wrestling.

had gotten a couple years' expe.

They looked great, people knew ,

and all of a sudden, now they'rn

this new-looking program.

They were household names: Ever.

All of a sudden, we're the #1 st

9 o'clock in the morning on sun.

They said, well, let's cover th.

They would have the cameraman ad

they would have the sound guy, ,

you know, during the tapings. A,

like, what's he doing in the ri?

'cause no other company would e.

We literally set the stage of w.

They came up with a comic book s

that are trying to take over thd

they need the von erichs becaus.

So that was just, we just clean,

you know, just the riff raff. (.

The girls just went nuts.

there's no telling what magazin.

They were teenage heart throbs.

They were teen idols - kevin, k.

going to the ring would be like.

The girls'd grab at us, you kno,

and of course, you gotta keep g.

And so, pretty soon your should,

you know, scratched all up and .

The place would just go electri.

I mean, your ears ring when you,

from that shrill scream. That w.

We wanted that feeling, that ino

stay that way until it was over.

Kerry was the star.

Kerry had the movie star looks,

had the physique.

He had great personality, just .

I've never seen anybody that ha.

David was the best performer in,

all around: Psychology, movemen.

David used to go to the ring wid

he was considered the yellow ro.

Dave was a technician.

There was not a hold you could .

Kevin, I think, was the athlete.

He was just insane, the things .

He was probably by far the best.

Then, mike.

Mike didn't have the size of th.

He was real close with his litt.

Chris, funny, funny guy. Just l.

The von erichs epitomized god, .

They're heroes.

Completely more popular than mo,

and more accessible.

From the time the kids were you,

if they won an award in school,,

it was talked about on the tele.

And they were in wrestling maga,

out hunting or fishing out in ls

with their famous father.

They grew up in the public eye.

They grew up on television; tha.

I'd like to say that it was, yo,

clean cut guys, but I think peo.

But, you can guarantee us that ,

and we had good motives, and mas

something real about us, that wd

we did love each other and cares

as people and not tickets.

And so, to their fans,

they were more members of the f.

There is something about those ,

every one of 'em, that everyone,

and I love 'em.

So, literally, it was almost li,

everyone felt like they were thd

they had watched these kids gro.

They were busy on the road 'cau,

it's a 365-day job.

In other words, these guys were,

sometimes 2 times a day.

David was the worker. Everybody.

He would've been the guy the nw.

Even before dave went to japan,

he was sitting with my mother ad

I said, "dave..." I just had th.

I was sitting there looking at .

I got a phone call, and was asl.

To this day, I can't stand a ph.

It just tears me up.

and here, is after my first kne.

After my third knee surgery, my,

and I had to give up football.

I guess dave was comic relief.

My parents, they knew how much ,

they said, "dave, be careful wh.

He just got the worst news of h.

He can't play football." and da,

"so, I heard you're a quitter.".

When dave died, I never got up .

It hit me like no other one did.

I say I was the oldest brother,

but I was the second son.

Our oldest brother was jackie.

They lived in a trailer park be,

since they were always on the r,

they had a house trailer that te

from place to place.

You know, jack was actually comd

it had snowed.

I think he was 6 years old, ando

step over the tongue or go arou,

he touched it. Somehow it elect,

and he fell in the snow face-fi.

I was looking for him, you know,

a little 3-year-old kid, and...

Looking for him, and...

I knew something was bad and I ,

watching my parents. They were .

And, jackie had been electrocut.

came in and saw my dad punch a ,

just shattered it.

He came out of that different.

He was still an honorable man o,

but I think inside he wanted to.

He was suffering.

He thought, "what have I done t"

he was at war with the world.

He wanted to make everyone suff.

It was the first of unimaginablt

that one family had to go throu.

When it came to david von erich,

just you know, getting the news,

it was about...

2 in the morning.

And the phone rang and I pickedd

this voice says, "david von eri.

And I said, "so, what happened?"

"we find in room dead."

it's 2:30 in the morning and

I'm trying to decide, how do I .

Back then there weren't cellpho.

And so, I got in my car, and - -

it was just coming daylight, an,

I could see fritz in front of t.

And I got out of the car, and I,

and he opened the door to the md

he looked at me and he said, "w"

so, I think he knew, for me to ,

it's something very, very serio.

I said, "fritz, they just calle.

David's dead."

my mother, she'd been told, andt

running off into the woods. It .

My dad just... Walked outside a.

I went a little crazy.

I didn't want to see anybody.

I had to be in the woods and I .

Fritz said, "you go to town, yo.

You find out what happened to m"

I managed to get a hold of brod,

who was also a, you know, legen,

popular in japan.

Brody said that when they opene,

the way he was laying, it lookee

he was trying to get to the pho.

I knew brody always to be so toa

strong good man, but when he wa,

he was like (stammering)... He .

He's crying inside. I never saw.

And he goes (stuttering) I said.

Don't think about it, frank!"

and he goes, (cries) "he's dead"

and I went, "frank!" god, it wa.

The next day, after dave had di,

you know, going to the mall in ,

and you see like these like tee,

and they're all crying, and the.

It was a big fricking deal in t.

It was almost like the fans had.

I mean, it was emotional on 2 ce

japanese fans were so hung up it

when a big name foreign wrestle,

I mean, there was memorials and.

I remember that airplane coming.

No one would look us in the eye.

We hurt so bad. And people hurt.

The funeral was just insane.

It was like one of those old fuf

the silent movie stars.

There was a lot of wrestlers ri.

When they went to the funeral,

the tears flowed. It was, it wa.

And so, we estimated probably 4,

showed up for this service.

It was just beautiful, expressi.

The schools let out.

The texas legislature convened.

It was like... Texas got hurt t.

You couldn't get anybody else I.

They literally had to put a scr,

and speakers outside for the the

that were there.

I didn't know that we were that.

Inside the business, we heard ty

in his hotel room in japan;

that generally only means one t.

There's all this word out that ,

but there's no doubt that he di.

One of the biggest rumors out tt

when brody found him, brody thr.

And we waited to hear that auto.

Fritz was adamant, "I want to k,

and whatever it says,

that's what we're gonna have to"

and, it came back, acute enteri.

His intestines, basically from ,

swole up to the point they rupt.

His body filled up with blood ae

about 2 days or a day before he,

he was throwing up.

Fritz was very stern about,

you make the shows you're booke.

So, he left and went over there.

No, I'm telling you what really.

We're not big shots that told tn

to falsify those documents, you.

I'm a wrestler. You're not gonn.

No one's gonna listen to me for.

It was gastro enteritis, a terr.

(sighs) and we lost him.

But we do our best...

Manning: We had a guy named gle.

And he had wrote, "heaven needs"

was a true champion.

He had a great gift and he knew,

to its fullest.

After david's funeral, fritz woe

parade of champions event in hi,

which at the time, attracted tho

The brother of david von erich -

"I'm gonna win it for david."

Leading up to that match, we kn;

we didn't know how big.

Here I knew I was gonna go down:

I was super happy for kerry.

I thought he'd make a great cha.

Here we go!

It was incredible.

And when, whenever that 1, 2...

And then you got kevin hitting ,

you got fritz hitting the ring.

In honor of brother david.

It was a great night, and not b.

That was probably a bigger deals

than it was to fritz, himself, .

With kerry's championship win ad

a strong emotional bond with fa,

world class championship wrestl.

But with david gone, there was .

Fritz wanted to replace david be

we were missing a piece of the ,

and we decided to look for anot.

Whenever I saw lance, he was th.

He was chiseled.

He looked like he could be a vo.

It was a terrible idea. It was--

we had never lied to our people.

It really hurt their image and ,

the downward spiral of going a .

They knew he wasn't a real von .

They're lying to us.

growing up, of course, we wante.

He's like real-life tarzan. You.

Any river he sees, he gets out .

He'll dive in it, didn't care w.

We saw that fearlessness in eve,

not only in the ring, but in li.

You know, that's what we wanted-

we're just grateful to god that,

doors are opening in wrestling.

And, you know, and we get to, y,

pick up where the von erichs le.

Kevin and I talk. You know, I g.

He's got 2 great boys now, mars.

Gosh, they're so talented.

And when I look at them, I see .

Kerry and I were dead set again.

Of all of the angles that happes

of world class wrestling, lance.

They needed another von erich.

Overall, it did a lot more dama,

than it did good.

And then, when they got on the d

tried to disown him, the fans j,

"well, you're the ones that bro"

that's where, I think, people l.

I have to say, kevin was dead s.

He felt it could get exposed ane

to step up and take the role.

People shouldn't say that mike e

because he sure was.

Mike was an incredible athlete.

The 4th von erich is getting re.

(cheering).

Mike got involved in wrestling d

to have the size as the other b,

and he worked out hard.

You know, he had the drive, he ,

so it was hard for mike.

Mike was a great guy,

but he wasn't cut out to be a w.

Mike had to walk in there and b,

and be a main event wrestler at,

and he wasn't a great athlete.

The only thing he had going fort

he was called mike von erich.

I mean, he just didn't look lik,

and he's in there with like rice

big great wrestlers who are jusm

in these matches that are just .

The injuries did bother him, yo.

He was wrestling in tel aviv, a.

Against gino hernandez.

Gino pulled just when he wasn't.

This time it tore a lot of liga.

Only a year after david's death,

mike dislocates his shoulder ing

and is rushed to an israeli hos.

They perform emergency surgery,

and soon after, mike is flown b.

They literally took him home,

and all of a sudden, his temper.

The fever hitting, went over 10,

is what did the damage, I think.

I put him over my shoulder and s

with him, put him in the car an.

Mike von erich hospitalized for,

sustained a staph infection thad

into toxic shock syndrome.

It was toxic shock syndrome, wh.

And the doctor comes out, and h,

"his blood pressure has plummetd

his organs are starting to shut"

he said, "we've done everything"

he said, "I don't think mike's t

through the night."

and they told us, "say goodbye "

the hospital was getting like 2r

where they had to hire extra st.

People had been offering to done

their liver and their kidneys.

We were in the room and gary ho,

who was considered the chaplain,

was there in the room.

Gary holder said, "god, you sta.

You said anything we ask in jes,

'I will do it'."

that's when I didn't even look .

I thought, that's disrespectful.

You went too far.

He took the bible and he slamme.

And he said, "god, there is you"

"so, keep your word, god."

and, it was less than 30 secondr

gary finished praying, the door.

Bill sutger came in the room wi,

and his exact words were,

"I'm not sure what happened, bu.

His temperature has dropped, so"

they couldn't believe it, but h.

And I want to thank everyone ou,

all my good neighbors, for your.

One week later, we rolled mike .

He might have rushed it a littl.

He was so anxious to get back.

And so, we did a big press conf.

I, I, I know I'll be back.

I can't wait 'til the cotton bo.

I saw on tv, well, "mike's gonn-

and they were milking to it ando

get people interested in it.

I just didn't see how it was go.

And when he first came back, it,

"god, I don't know if he should"

He looked really gaunt and holl.

And that's when he attacked a s.

Attacked a parked car one time..

But, they always wanted a feel-,

So, all of a sudden, you had bi.

And early Saturday morning, vonn

suspicion of drunken driving an.

The von erich family attorney ae

during his release from jail.

He would be the last person to .

Mike missed an event.

If you were a von erich, you di.

I remember that night,

wondering where mike was, what .

They had a bulletin out everywh,

had all the police looking.

And, it was, I want to say, 2 d,

before they found mike.

The news of another tragic deaty

has hit hard.

Mike had not been seen since sa,

was depressed about being arres.

As his mother and brother looke,

the family's worst fears were c.

Professional wrestler mike von ,

the apparent victim of suicide.

He overdosed. So sad.

Everybody was just so sad. Dave.

you know, I didn't know this wa.

Maybe I got-- I'm tired.

These are 3 big things, I guess.

You guys... Um...

- Oh yeah, of course. - That wa.

And once again, another von erir

is called upon to step into the.

Chris von erich was the worst pg

because he had had health probl.

I'm sure he wanted to be like he

his brothers were his heroes.

Kevin was actually helping chri.

He had to work 10 times harder .

His body wasn't built like his .

He wanted to be a wrestler so b.

He just, it's not gonna happen.

The von erichs were believable s

to thousands of fans.

But continual misfortune chippe,

and they would have one last de.

my brothers taught me about wre,

but I taught them about eating.

Mike was really something speci.

And we did a few tv commercials,

shot it all night.

For a joke, kerry puts all thes.

But, because they were so closes

not only being texas all-americ,

but god fearing texas all-ameri,

when things came out about car ,

or... Is there drugs involved I,

or whatever, every move was cov.

The dallas times herald, the lo,

and you could tell when you wat,

you're seeing more empty seats.

You know, like, look - they wer,

and by '88, '89 they were, they.

After so much tragedy, and withy

in jeopardy, fritz's youngest s,

steps into the ring, attemptingp

where his brothers left off.

I think chris felt bad.

He wanted to try to fill the sh,

that it was almost impossible t.

The first I remember of chris w,

him just being like a little ce.

The goal was to hopefully find s

involved into the matches.

If he was gonna wrestle, I wantm

a really good ground game.

You know, all the escapes and c,

and to be a technician.

Physically, in no way, should hn

involved in wrestling.

Because of his size, I think he.

He had brittle bones because ofn

that he took.

It was really hard for him.

Wanted have the big muscles and,

but muscles are just looks.

You've got to have agility, exp,

all these things that just didn.

And then, all of a sudden, chri.

He couldn't work out. It was a .

Kevin was down there.

They were down at the house in ,

and chris was just all upset an,

and this and that.

He'd loaned me his vcr, and so,

he called me at like 12:30 that.

"I want my vcr back right now."

I said, "chris, come on. Wait f?

I'll give it to you in the morn"

and, I hear his 4-wheeler drivee

a couple times and took off.

I knew he had a spot up on the ,

so I drove up there, you know.

He was sitting there by himself,

"chris, what are you doing up h"

he said, "well, did you read my"

I said, "oh, what are you gonna?

Kill yourself or something, chr"

I said, "chris, don't do anythi"

he said, "I won't, kev. I promi"

I believed it, you know.

Went back to my parent's house .

And, I said, "does chris ever w"

dad said, "I think you better g"

so, I did get back up there.

Wish I had never left because ie

right after it must have happen.

I saw him laying there on the g.

(gasps) choking.

I said, "chris, what did, what "

I thought he might have took so.

Reached, hooked his arm and putd

to lift him up and my thumb,

you know, found the hole.

That's when I realized that he .

Mm... Yeah.

It was tough.

with the last vestiges of the v,

kerry accepts an offer to go ma.

It's another chance in the spot.

You know what; when the crowd s,

kerry was getting big offers,

would he come up and work for v?

Would he make some appearances ?

Kerry, he took a, took a good od

he went up there.

After enduring several tragedief

his family's wrestling promotio,

kerry takes the von erich legac.

However, no one knew he was wreg

with an unthinkable secret.

Kerry and I just showed off forr

all day long, I think. We just ,

However, a secret from his past.

Kerry was supposed to be wrestl.

I get the phone call, kerry's b.

It's not life threatening, but .

Kerry was riding his motorcycleo

the back of a parked police car.

I remember rick hazzard, I saw ,

and he said, "holy cow," he sai,

"his ankle looks like an alliga"

when they made the decision to ,

I would have never, ever though.

I guess fritz thought, they dide

kerry look weak, especially aft.

So, they tried to hide the fact.

He wanted me to promise to hide,

and we all promised.

Anything we said to each other,

if we gave our word, that's an .

We weren't gonna let kerry downe

he was ashamed of it.

In kerry's mind, "I'm a fake."

you know, the injury done on th.

Before, it was, it was almost t.

I almost had to have my leg amp.

Now my leg is back, it's coming.

Everyone was sworn to secrecy fr

about a 5-year period there.

He would do everything that a pn

with both limbs would do.

I think that would 'a just been.

And I was proud of kerry.

To do, to come back like that a,

not only just compete, but to I.

They could've presented it like,

and maybe he would've been a li,

maybe it'd have made him feel b.

But instead, it was another thi,

and it was another thing that wy

weighing on him mentally.

"now I'll never be as good as I.

I'll never make my dad proud," .

With his transition to wrestlin,

kerry found himself a small fis.

But with a new identity,

it was a chance to reboot his c.

Vince brings in kerry von erich,

the modern-day warrior.

You know, he's one of the bigges

of that period. I mean, it was ,

he still had the physique, but m

at that stage of the game to a ,

when he was physically limited..

He just wasn't the same.

And he quickly drops the von er,

tells him you can't do the claw.

His name's the texas tornado,

and they just call him the texa.

They didn't even call him kerry.

All he had going for him is tha.

The texas tornado!

When he was there, things were ,

and it was not a secret things .

He had, you know, a series of d.

He was not happy at all.

Kerry didn't handle the fame we.

You've seen the, you know, he wt

with rock 'n' roll people and a.

And I was more of a family man.

It's probably what saved me. I .

Kerry was, was... Doing drugs.

You just knew it.

Once he went through the accide,

they immediately fill him up wi.

They got the pain killers in ya,

they got the pills they're givi.

That was not a good path for hi.

Because of the drugs, he was on,

and then he got arrested again.

And... You know,

he was afraid because of the prn

that he was gonna go to jail th.

I remember he went to his wife ,

"I'll go to jail if you promise,

you'll take me back," and she w.

He talked about what chris did ,

"can you imagine the guts it to"

you know, it's like, that's prey

when you hear people saying tha.

He told me he was gonna kill hi.

I said, "kerry, you couldn't do"

he said, "kev, well, what are w"

I said, "we'll do something,

but we sure as hell ain't gonna"

I said, "I'll tell ya what, ker,

let's go to alaska. Let's take s

and let's just get charged by a.

We got 6 tries.

I thought it'll be good for me y

and there's no drug dealers up ,

so it'll be great.

I wish we'd 'a gone up there wi.

On the morning of February, the,

the same day kerry was schedulee

indicted on drug charges,

he took a drive out to his fath.

Called dad and he said, "can't "

well, he was pouring a driveway,

and I was gonna tell him kerry',

he's headed out to your place ae

'til I get there. I called, trid

a couple times and could not ge.

Fritz was continuing pouring co.

Kerry came, walked up, gave him,

"dad, I love you. I really, rea"

kerry got in the jeep and took .

And so, dad's sitting in the hoy

kerry's been out in the field s.

He said he went and looked and .

The .44 he'd given dad for fath.

And, when he went down, there wa
