on a massive scale.

But it's mainly those
loyal to the cause.

Syrian forces say

they have seized control
of the last pocket of territory

held by the Islamic State in Syria.

The victory puts an end to the
brutal long reign of terror by Isis

that once covered large parts
of Syria and Iraq.

families, defeated and demoralised,

are facing surrender.

WOMAN 1: 50,000 people who no one
wants to take responsibility for.

MAN: The humanitarian
organisations, and in particular,

the local administration,
are overwhelmed.

of the Western troops,

the Kurds have been left in charge
of almost 100,000 Isis captives.

WOMAN 3: This is a challenge
for governments around the world.

Radicalised mothers bringing up
children

who've known no other life,

and no one knows
what to do with them.

And good morning.
My name is Zozan Aloush.

I am Kurdish woman
from city of Kobane,

and a woman rights activist.

From point of the view
in northeast Syria,

as Kurdish women
and Kurdish movement,

we think the woman is a victim
and we need to support each other.

Even if you make some mistake,

that doesn't mean
that I should leave you.

I will ask you from your name,
your country

and which background you come.

Maybe we'll begin with you.

(LAUGHTER)

OK. My name's Shamima,

I'm from the UK. I'm 19.

And you?

My name was Kimberly,
and I'm originally from Canada.

You?My name is Nawal,
I'm from the Netherlands, I'm 33.

Um, I'm Hoda, 24 years old
and from America.

Uh, I'm Hafida, 27 years old.
also from the Netherlands.

Yeah, my name is Ouidad.
Ouidad.

I'm from Germany, I'm 32 years old.

Every day, we are fighting for you,
you know,

to ensure you will go home.

Every week, we are sending
mails with your names,

with your profiles, picture
of your kids,

to your governments.

The most respond we received is,

"We want the children, not--
without woman. Without the mothers."

And it's inhuman, for me.
We cannot do that.

For example, Belgium,
they want only the children.

French they only want the children.

Netherland,
they even didn't respond.

So we are doing our best.

But for us, giving only the children
without mothers,

we will not do that.

I'm sorry, in Germany?
They even don't want,

and they even said, "If you insist,

"we will take the nationality
from them."

So this is the biggest challenge
we are facing with the governments.

We cannot stay here.
It's not an option.

Under international
humanitarian law,

the countries have to take us back.

We hear you and we care about you,

but for us also it's very difficult.

MAN 1: Now, today we asked,

should the pregnant British
schoolgirl who joined IS

be allowed to return to the UK?

No, said 76 per cent.

MAN 2: Did you ever see executions?

What was that like,
when you first saw that?

These are the heads of captives?

SHAMIMA: It's been five years now
since I left to come to Syria.

I have three older sisters,
so I'm the youngest.

They're really outspoken women,
really independent, really strong.

And I'm more quiet,
in the background.

I just did not fit in with them.

I lived in a neighbourhood mostly
full of immigrants,

but I never played outside
with the kids or anything else.

I used to love playing by myself.

I didn't really have a good
relationship with my mum.

I didn't speak to her,
she didn't speak to me.

Really didn't feel like
she loved me sometimes.

She never taught me how to pray,
but she expected me to pray,

so I used to just pretend to pray.

I was like the black sheep
in the family.

I just did not fit
in my family at all.

WOMAN: She doesn't know any better.

Muslims are supposed to be
prisoners in this life

in paradise in the next life,

so she's thinking in terms
of a 7th-century law

and she's thinking beheadings
is fine,

she's thinking
that executions are fine,

only because she thinks
there's an afterlife,

and she's been deceived,
she's been lied to,

this is all she's been hearing
for the last five years.

(PLANE FLIES OVERHEAD)

WOMAN 1: Hoda Muthana claims

she was trying to leave
the caliphate before it fell,

but to the US State Department,
she remains a terrorist.

WOMAN 2: She stands accused

of encouraging attacks
against Americans.

MAN 1: She joined an enemy entity,

she's a threat
to the United States.

MAN 2: Do you think you deserve
a punishment for what you did?

Maybe therapy lessons,
maybe a process

that will ensure us
that we'll never do this again.

People watching will say to
themselves,

"Well, therapy isn't enough."

HODA: I was born
and raised in America.

My dad was a politician.
When he came to America,

he was hired as a diplomat
for Yemen in the United Nations.

I have three brothers
and one sister.

My mum was a lot more strict
with me.

I wore a scarf, at 11, by force.
I didn't want to.

I didn't have much friends
in high school,

and I was extremely shy,
painfully shy.

I think it was lack of social
experience outside of school.

I wasn't allowed to hang out
with friends,

I wasn't allowed to go anywhere,
not even to the mall.

I grew up as an American,
born and raised in America,

and all I had waiting
for me in the future

was an arranged marriage the exact
way my parents wanted it to be.

So I had no time
to dream about anything.

(BIRDSONG)

(RADIO CHATTER IN ARABIC)

Uh, so I will
introduce myself first.

My name is Sevinaz,

and my motivation to come here to
have this workshop,

I wanted to know you and then
I wanted to try to understand you

and try to create a relation
from a woman to a woman

and for you, create a relation for
yourself as a woman and as a mother.

You can speak about the things that
happens every day with you here.

You can speak about the past,
what did you went through.

You can write to the people
that now you're missing.

You can write in every possible way
that you will feel relief.

OK, now we will watch videos

that the Islamic State used
to make a propaganda

to convince people to come and join.

It's better to not discuss now.

We watch it,
and then we discuss together.

SINGING IN ARABIC:

AMERICAN MAN: My brothers, there's
a role for everybody here in Syria.

You can easily earn yourself
a high station with the next life

by sacrificing just a small bit
of this worldly life.

Your families would live here
in safety,

just like how it is back home.

You know, we have wide expanses
of territory here in Syria

and we can easily
find accommodation

for you and your families,

so come and join
before the doors close.

SHAMIMA: I'd see videos of Syrians
being bombed,

babies covered in blood,

Syrians crying,
"Where are the Muslims

"to help us and stand by us?"

That-- those types of videos
made me feel really guilty.

SPEAKING ARABIC:

They talk about the relationship
between one Muslim and another,

stronger even than
a blood relationship,

and how Muslims are like a body,

like, one person is hurting,
then another person is hurting.

It just made me sick
to my stomach

that this was going on in the world
and no one was doing anything.

It was really hard for me to see.
(EXPLOSIONS ON VIDEO)

I always wanted to be part
of a Muslim community,

because when I was young,

I felt like I was an outsider
in my community,

so I just wanted to be
a part of something.

(SIREN WAILING ON VIDEO)
My friends started practising,

and they helped me come
into the religion as well,

and it just started with,
like, learning my religion,

and then it turned into wanting
to come into Syria,

wanting to help the Syrians.

I think a lot of things
affected me deep in my heart.

(SHOUTING AND EXPLOSIONS ON VIDEO)

I wanted to feel useful, I felt
like I was useless my whole life,

and every website I visited
had a Syrian advertisement

that the Syrians need help
and the Syrians are starving

and the Syrians
are going through trouble,

so I got really sucked into that,

and I felt really bad as a Muslim
leaving them behind.

SEVINAZ: OK. I watched some other
propaganda videos from the State

but they were, like,
so tough in a level,

I was like, "Why anybody
who watched this would come?"

But these are, like,
really well done videos.

WOMAN 1: For me, example,
when I see this video,

I was very curious about
what happen in Syria.

And in the other side,
I see all this video

about what Bashar did
to these people, you know,

so you feel really like,
khalas, you know?

WOMAN 2: The-- the propaganda
was really manipulating,

so a lot of us here, I speak
for the majority of the youth,

a lot of us either were converts

or newly practising
in our religion.

Yeah.So when the caliphate
did come and was announced,

it was perfect timing
for most of us.

For example, me,
I was just practising,

I would say a year before I came.

That's all.
I grew up in an Islamic household,

but I didn't know
much about my religion,

SHAMIMA: I never knew
the importance of hijab.

To me, it was just a piece of
material.

Usually, parents just tell you to
wear it, they don't tell you why,

so you don't really have
a connection with the hijab,

you don't understand
the importance of wearing it,

so I just wore it for the sake
of avoiding argument with my mum.

But when I got to high school,
I made my first friends,

and there were
a lot more Muslims there,

so I could connect with them more.

Back in the UK, there
were a lot of people online

recruiting people
like my friends to come,

you know, guilting us into coming,

not really telling us the entire
truth about the situation in Syria.

We were just getting
all our information from Twitter

and, like, other social media.

We couldn't distinguish
between what was fake news

and what was real news.

We were all really young and naive.

WOMAN 1: There's growing concern
that young women

are being aggressively groomed
on social media.

WOMAN 2: Nazir Afzal
says Islamic State

is gaining the status of a pop idol
for teenagers in Britain,

with boys wanting to be like them
and girls wanting to be with them.

MAN: When you talk
about young people,

you have to remember
how vulnerable they are.

Teenagers particularly
are susceptible to propaganda.

What's happening with,
um, Isil, Isis, Daesh,

whatever you want to call them,
they're very evil people,

but they're very good
at propaganda,

they're very good at marketing.

The path of glory for this ummah
lay not for a single day

in the shade of comfort and peace.

Rather, it was to be found by
living the true meaning of Islam,

men who do not surrender to the
bitter reality of the status quo

but instead strive to change it
by surrendering to Allah's command

and waging Jihad in his path.

MAN 1: We're getting a new sense
of the brutality of Isis.

OBAMA: Today,
the entire world is appalled

by the brutal murder of Jim Foley
by the terrorist group Isil.

WOMAN 1: A grisly new act
from terrorists

already reviled for their savagery.

Isil reportedly murders a Jordanian
pilot by burning him alive.

(SCREAMING)

WOMAN 2: 13 people
have been killed in Barcelona

after a van
was driven into the crowd.

MAN 2: A white van driving
on the London Bridge

starts ploughing into pedestrians.
(SIRENS BLARING)

MAN 3: You are looking at
the Manchester Arena in England

where a suicide bomber set
off an explosion last night.

MAN 4: A group of eight
suicide attackers

attacking six separate locations--

MAN 5: Isis in the last few hours

has issued statements
of responsibility

in Arabic, in French,
in Russian and in English.

Their social media propaganda
is going full steam,

and they say this is only
the beginning of the storm.

CHILD SPEAKING ARABIC:

HODA: When I started college,
I was interested in doing business,

but then my hopes
went down the drain,

because I know that after
graduating college,

there's nothing...

there's nothing for me
to look forward to.

With all the struggles
I was going through at home,

I was very distracted at school,
and I wasn't listening too often.

My work was always coming in late,

and I was kind of already
failing most of my classes,

and I would find my sanctuary
on my phone.

I spent a lot of hours online,
especially on Twitter,

and there were like British,
Australians, Canadians, Americans,

just Muslims
from all around the world.

I had what was called at the time
a Muslim Twittersphere.

I suddenly became
really practising.

Me and my mum didn't
have such good relationships,

and I thought I could improve it
by being more religious,

because she's very religious,

and I learned all of this
on my own online.

When you are brainwashed,

you don't realise it
until you snap out of it,

so I took everything
too fast and too deep.

WOMAN 1: Hoda Muthana
created the username UmmJihad

to tweet thousands of messages
to her followers.

WOMAN 2: According
to Hoda Muthana's family,

she contacted Isis members
through social media

to plan her escape from the US.

WOMAN 3: And part of their
propaganda is highlighting

how it is a so-called
religious obligation

for young girls to join
this Islamic State.

(DOG BARKING)

I-- I get an idea some things
that happen with you in your life,

and you cannot share it
with anybody.

When you write it down,
it's exactly the same

as sharing it with somebody
by telling it.

So since now I know all of you
have writing skills,

these are for you diaries.

You start to write it for yourself
to know how you felt,

and if you like, you will
share it with us.Thank you.

How many times you saw him?
One time.

And this time he really said to me
that he regret everything

and he just want to start
new life, you know.

45 kilometres, that's not easy
to walk through the minefields

to speak about my emotions.

I finished my school in Holland,

but short after my diploma,
I married.

I was two years married when
the father of my children, he left.

Uh... I was three months pregnant.

He left from Holland,
he went to Syria.

That moment you know that you
are doing something what's wrong,

you are feeling it,
but you're thinking,

"I just want to go.
I want to try to take him back."

SPEAKING ARABIC:

I was 21.
I was six months pregnant.

It was the first time
that I travelled alone,

and I entered--
entered in Syria, yeah.

(ALL SHOUTING IN ARABIC)

IN ENGLISH: Hey, hey!

What happened?

IN ENGLISH:

The children in Isis, when they
would ask for, uh...

chocolate or for cookies,
because there was no food,

and they would say to them,

"In paradise,
we will eat our food together,

"and in paradise,
we will have chicken together."

So the children, when they were
in the... in the welcoming tent,

they said to us,
"Are we in paradise?" (LAUGHS)

And we said,
"No, but the food is good."

As a child, I didn't understand
what is the difference

between me and the others,

but I felt that
there was a difference.

Children would say,
"I cannot play with you

"because my father say
that you are a Moroccan,"

especially after what happened with
the World Trade Center, 9-11.

Nawal?"When I went to bed
and sleep,

"I sometimes had beautiful dreams,

"but this dream made me hopeful."

I got married and I had
the three children in Holland,

then after the rise of Isis,

I just felt that, if this
is really an Islamic State,

then maybe it's better for us
that we go there.

There were many people also
from Holland and from Europe,

they made Hijrah, they emigrated

to the territories
of the Islamic State,

and some came back,
but most of them stayed.

SHAMIMA: It was the holidays when
I decided to leave with my friends.

I knew it was a big decision, but
I felt compelled to do it quickly.

I didn't want to be the friend
that was left behind.

WOMAN 1: Three teenage girls left
London Gatwick Airport

on Tuesday morning.

They are believed to be
on their way to Syria...

WOMAN 2: Amira Abase,
Kadiza Sultana and Shamima Begum

are all minors, just 15 and 16.

My bags had been packed already,
and I put them somewhere else

so my mum didn't see me walking
outside of the door.

I didn't even hug her. I'd
really regret not hugging her.

And I just got on the bus, and
I can just see her staring at me.

WOMAN SPEAKING FRENCH:

While we were on the aeroplane,

our flight got delayed
because of the snow.

We were just so nervous,

because by the time the plane
would land at four o'clock,

that's when my mum would
be expecting me to come home,

so I knew by the time
I didn't come home,

they would start getting nervous.

MAN SPEAKING ITALIAN:

After we got out the airport,
we went to a coach station.

We did try to dress
as if we weren't Muslims,

because we knew that if we dressed
as Muslims, they'd suspect us more.

While we were sitting
in that coach station,

we were just really quiet,
we were really nervous,

but at the same time,
kind of excited.

And then after that,
we got on the coach

and we went to Gaziantep Airport.

And then from there, we took
a bunch of cars to the border,

and we just had to start
running across the border.

It was really scary. I don't know.

They were just saying, "Run, run,"
and we thought, I don't know,

someone would shoot us
or something,

and we were just really scared
at that point.

(THUDER RUMBLING)

But somehow, we got through.

My mum called,
and I just went quiet.

She kept saying my name,
and I didn't know what to say back.

And I was like,
"Yeah, Mum, I'm here."

Was crying. After that,
I didn't speak to her again.

(THUNDER CRASHING)

WOMAN 1: It's pooling.

WOMAN 2: This is from
the toilet, huh?

This one?Yeah.
They're also clogged.

It comes out.Oh, the smell's so
bad.Yeah it's really bad. Really.

Oh, my God.
(CHILD SCREAMS)

I want to close this.Huh?

We have to close it.
Oh.

We can't.
It's overflowing from inside.

my children had grown

and they were now moving on
with their own direction,

so I found myself alone
with an empty nest,

and I wasn't ready for that.

I was really in a terrible space.

And he found me.

He was a very vibrant personality,

not what you would
ever have expected

for the persona of--
of a terrorist.

And I got married from a distance,
online.

He said, "Come where
you're actually loved,

"where you're actually needed,"
because he knew that I felt like

I was really not needed
at the time at all.

SEFINAZ: I guess now I understand
why you come,

but now I'm thinking,
in which moment you felt like,

"This is not the place
that I need to be."

I was trapped in the madafa
when I first came, actually, and--

Me, my whole life, I never wanted
to get married young. Never.

I wanted-- 26 was my least.
My youngest age.

I think. Around 26 years old. And--
So you were trapped in the madafa

until they forced you
to get married with somebody.

Everyone that wanted to leave,

they said, "No, it's obligatory
for you to stay."

NAWAL: When I entered the Syria,
they directly took my passport

and they said, "Because you're
new and you have no house,

"you can stay here for a while."

I was so shocked.
It was a prison full with women

who also fell
for the propaganda of Isis,

and they came but, uh...

they, uh...
they locked them up.

All the windows were locked, there
was a guard in front of the--

in front of the house.
(CHILD SCREAMING)

There was a guard in front
of the guard, you know? (CHUCKLES)

And when you-- when you think
of this, you're like, "Wow.

"This is crazy, like,
why... why..."

Yeah"Why did I--
why did I think--"

Some people thought, you know,

"You have to have patience
with this, it's a test from God."

And now I look back at it,
I'm, like... "Crazy."

Like, I got out of the madafa
just cos it was--

I, like... I got married just
because the madafa was dirty and...

You couldn't stay in it.

It was just not the right
environment for me at all, so I...

Marriage was
the only way out for me, yeah.

At least you have Adam.
Yeah.OK.No, his-- his father...

But you're always forced
into marriage again

and again and again and again.
Yeah.

My name is Ouidad,
I'm from Germany.

Um, I'm born as a Muslim,

but my family is non-religious,
so I grow up without religion.

I start to wear hijab
when I was 19,

and I stayed four years in Isis.

I was 29 and I had my children.

My husband, he was
still working in a hospital,

and then he got killed.

After the death of my husband,
we had to share with 30 women

and I don't know how many children
in the madafa.

My children, they had so
much lice in their hair,

I had to shave their hair,

because in this time
I got also hepatitis,

and I was so sick,
I had a liver infection,

I couldn't even stand up
to give them something to eat.

I asked Isis, "Just let me go out,
I don't want to marry,"

and then they say, "There is no
solution for you except you marry."

One night, a woman was brought in,
she was carried in,

and she was-- she wasn't
conscious, I don't think.

She-- her-- her eyes were closed.

And she miscarried her baby
that night.

I think she was about
three months along,

judging by the size
of the pregnancy,

and, uh, she was bleeding
heavily internally.

I couldn't find an inch,
I think, on her entire body

that wasn't marked some way.

She had been beaten with
some kind of a pipe, I think,

judging by the markings,

and she was in terrible condition.

And...

many women didn't survive those
kinds of injuries, it's too severe,

especially head injuries like this.

How long was your muqabla?

About 30 minutes.
30 whole minutes?Yeah.

Wow, OK.That's not a lot, I know.

And--No, although I know-- Wow.

Hah! I know quite a few people--

SHAMIMA: I thought that I could put
off getting married for a while,

but the conditions in the house
were really bad,

so I just wanted to get out
as soon as possible.

And I stayed there
for maybe a month,

and someone offered
my husband to me.

What they do first is they
ask you for your preferences

of what type of man you would want,
like, age, nationality, language,

and then they filter that down,

and they offer you someone
and you're, like,

"OK, I'll have a meeting with him."

But I only ever had
a meeting with my husband,

my husband only ever
had a meeting with me.

And then we just decided
to get married. It was-- Yeah.

I remember seeing my husband
for the first time,

being like,
"Wow, he's really good-looking."

And when-- when I was
stepping out of the car,

I tripped on my abaya, because
I'm not used to wearing my abaya,

and I-- I fell out of the car.

I just ran quickly into the house.
I sat down,

and the first thing my husband said
is, "Are you OK? I saw you fall."

I was so embarrassed,
I was, like, "I'm OK."

It was really weird.
I didn't know how to cook,

and he was just so shocked.

I'm like, "You married a
15-year-old, it's your own fault."

Did your husband have that problem
in the muqabla?

No, my husband
spoke more than me.

I told him, I don't talk a lot.
Yeah, you're more shy.

I thought so.I was honest.
"I don't talk a lot."

He's like, "Do you ever stop?"

I'm like, "No. Let me tell you
everything.

Women don't know how big it was

when a brother would say no to a
sister, like they must...

Either this brother
is really picky,

or there's something wrong with the
sister, she said something wrong.

You guys analyse this
far more than I ever did.Mmm.

Yeah, I just wasn't even planning
to get married again.

I was like, "What? How do you marry
this quickly? This is not normal.

WOMAN 1: "What kind of a life awaits
them under IS?"

SPEAKING ARABIC:

Female IS supporters
issued a manifesto

on the role of women
in the so-called caliphate.

It says it's legitimate for a girl
to be married at the age of nine.

It describes staying at home
with her husband and children

as the fundamental function
of a woman.

So what's the appeal for
young Western Muslim women?

HODA: There's nothing,
as a woman, to really do there.

Cook and clean all day.

There's no schools for women,
there's nothing to learn,

there was just nothing to do
for the past five years.

And it's just really made you
so, like, brain-dead.

Music in public was not allowed,
free mixing was not allowed,

no internet, there was no TV.

There was very basic living,
you know,

it felt like you were living
in the Middle Ages or something.

My husband at one point
had a computer.

He played video games on it,
and I would just watch.

That wasn't allowed,
but he still did it

because it was just one of his
guilty pleasures, video games.

SPEAKING ARABIC:

You were told how to think,
how to dress, how to act.

The Isis police they go around
and they yell at people.

One time I had my Nikes on, and
it had a pink strip on the Nike,

just a little tiny pink strip,

and I remember being stopped and
yelled at for that pink strip.

They would scream
in the intercom of their car,

"You can't wear that shoe
because it's too attractive."

I remember wearing my glasses,
showing my eyes.

"Put your niqab back down.
We can see your eyes."

Want to take your glove off just
to take your money out of your bag,

someone screams at you from far
away, "Put your gloves back on!"

I was expecting a happy place
with Muslims...

(LAUGHS) ..helping in hospitals,

helping in schools,
helping the community out

and just being like good,
decent Muslims to each other.

I don't know. It was just--
it was a big mess.

It was, uh...

It was hell on Earth, really.

WOMAN: Hoda Muthana, who left the US
four years ago to join Isis

is desperate to come home,

but the 24-year-old mother has been
banned from returning to America.

MAN: "She is not a citizen."

That's the message coming
from President Trump.

He tweeted, "A woman who left
the US to join Isis

"will not be allowed
back into the US."

She tweeted, "Go on drive-bys
and spill all their blood,

"or rent a big truck
and drive all over them."

HODA: When the tweet of Trump
came out, I lost all hope.

I had a big meltdown there.

I didn't know what was going
to happen to me.

MAN: She is a terrorist,
she's not a US citizen.

She ought not return
to this country.

SEVINAZ: Hoda, please.

I heard you're not doing so well,

"you're distracted in school and
at home, no one listens to you.

only one you turned to was God.

in your faith.

and verify your sources.

the lives of the disbelievers,

She's believed to have been killed

She was 17 years old,
and according to her family,

was planning to flee
and return to Britain.

The hardest part, obviously,

was having to go and tell her
mother that she had been killed,

because she just did
not believe it at first.

She was like, "No," you know,
"Prove it," you know,

"We want to see a picture."
And just...

We-- And there was no way
of us showing a picture

because her body was in pieces.

(SNIFFLES) So... But
we couldn't tell her mother that,

because it was just already
so hard.

And I think from that point on,

every time someone would die,
I just felt numb inside,

because I didn't know
how to deal with death.

Like, my initial experience
with dealing with someone dying

was just to forget about it,
like it didn't happen,

be happy for them,

and that's not a normal way
to, like, grieve for someone.

And it was really hard.

And then, Amira,
she was also killed in Baghouz.

I just-- I found out
a couple of months ago,

and that was also hard on me

because I also
had to tell her mother.

And now I feel like
I have no friends any more

because they were--
they were everything I had.

I've known them for,
like, half my life,

and now, just, I feel lost,

like I don't know who I am
any more without them.

HODA: There was a drone flying in
front of us for about four hours,

so I was just laying down
with my child,

and I was praying all night
that it wouldn't hit.

A few seconds later, it hit
the building in front of me,

and all the smoke
came into our room,

and all the windows crashed in.

And I remember looking at my child.

I couldn't see, but when
I would blow the dust away,

I could see little pieces of glass
on his face, and my face also.

KIMBERLY: I worked
in an underground area,

like an intensive care unit.

The bodies just kept coming in.

Some were dead on arrival,
some were almost dead.

they would try
to squeegee the blood out,

because it kept rising
as people were bleeding out,

um, and it was flowing in

what that smells like

but then I was really happy
when I became pregnant.

I felt like I had a purpose
in life again.

Her name was Soraya.
My husband was just so happy,

because he always wanted
a daughter.

Most people want boys,

but my husband always wanted
his own daughter

so he can spoil her
and love her so much.

WOMAN: As Isis faced defeat
in Mosul,

attention had already shifted to
Raqqa, the so-called Isis capital,

across the border in Syria,

where US backed forces now have
the extremists surrounded.

Soon after that, I got pregnant
again with my son,

and it was just so hard taking care
of a baby and being pregnant.

I just... And during that time,
we had to keep moving,

there were so many bombings,
and there was a shortage of food

and diapers and milk, and...

Because I didn't--
I didn't have breast milk,

so I had to worry about every
next, like, can of milk

I would need to get for
my daughter to make sure.

During that time,
she also got really sick

and lost a lot of weight,
and I was afraid she would die.

And having two kids and then
being pregnant for a third time,

it was just all too much
for me to handle on my own.

Yeah.

Maybe in November, my--
my first-- my first son died,

and that really hit me hard,

and I couldn't even, like,
mourn over him,

because I knew that I still had
to take care of my daughter

and the baby
that I was pregnant with.

I just had to get up
and keep moving.

There was no time to sit
and cry about it.

And then the next month,
my daughter died, and I just--

When she died, it was so hard,

because I just felt so alone

and I just felt like
my entire world was falling apart

right in front of me,
and I couldn't do anything.

And I felt like it was my fault
for not getting them out sooner,

even though I didn't know
why they died.

They just died from-- from some
illness that-- I don't even know.

And when she died, at that moment,

I just really--
I just wanted to kill myself.

Like, I felt like I couldn't
even get up any more.

I couldn't even get up to run
when there were bombings.

The only thing keeping me alive was
my baby that I was pregnant with.

I felt like I had to at least
do him right by getting out

and trying to give him
a normal life.

SEVINAZ: What was the moment
that you thought that the daulah

is not the right place
to practise your Islam,

not the right place
to be Muslim person?

A moment you were like, "This is not
the Islam that I came for."

I don't think there was an exact
event, really, for me.Yeah.

It's just in general as a whole,
I saw, like, it wasn't--Yeah.

It wasn't what they told us
it would be. Yeah.Yeah.

For you, Shamima?
For me personally,

it was when I realised
that I can't leave.

Before, I was in the UK,

and talking to people online
who were living in daulah.

They told me, "If you don't like
it, they'll just let you leave."

But I came and I heard,
if you want to leave,

they'll put you in prison, torture
you, they'll think you're a spy,

and then once you get out of
prison, you still can't leave.

That's when I realised this is not
about putting the ummah together,

it's about trapping people.
it's about the numbers,

All daulah cared about
was the numbers.Yeah.

Even if you hate-- if you're like
talking about daulah so badly,

you're walking on the street
saying you hate them,

they're like "We don't care. Stay.

"Just look good for the videos."

HODA: I hated my surroundings
and the way of living,

but in pregnancy,
I hated it times a million.

His father did die while
I was seven months pregnant,

and I was very afraid
of my son being born

in this place that was
so dangerous for him.

But for a long time,
I've been thinking

of trying to find my way out.

Someone gave me a number
of a smuggler,

and I was really desperate
at the time,

so I texted the smuggler and
I said, "How much does it cost?"

He said, "Don't worry, it's a low
price.

"We'll talk about it in person."

He said, "Wait for me out of
the cafe at a certain time."

And then when I got there, there
was a big truck full of women.

I thought "This looks so fishy,

"because why would
a big truck full of women

"right in the middle of the street
be on their way out?"

And I hopped in the truck,
feeling so numb and scared.

I still-- still today don't know
why I hopped in that truck,

because I had a feeling
of suspicion before,

and I said to him
while he's driving,

"Where are you going?" and he said,
"Don't worry, you'll see,"

And he's driving straight,
and then he takes a circle

and he goes back around.

I'm like, "Why are you going back?"

And he's he lied to me and said,

"Oh I'm going
to pick up another sister."

And then, um, he brought us
into this building,

which was like an old school,

and there was a bunch of guys
huddled in, like, circles

with, uh... guns.

It was, uh, one of the most
frightening moments to me in Isis.

And then I managed to slip out
somehow with my child.

I put my son's jacket on backwards

and I like fixed my niqab
differently, and I walked out.

I see all the women getting in
a truck with all those men,

and them driving to, like,
an unknown place and I said,

"Thank God I left before I went
with those men,

"before they caught me and took me
wherever they were going."

And till today, I don't know
what happened to those women.

Allahu akbar!

This is such a crazy life.

It's like a movie.
It's worse than a movie.

MAN: Allahu akbar!

MAN 1: This is how they celebrate a
long, hard-fought victory in Raqqa.

The battle to retake Raqqa lasted
five months,

and it came at a high cost.
(SIRENS WAILING)

About 80 percent of the city
was destroyed,

and human rights groups say about
a thousand civilians were killed.

MAN 2: US led forces here say
they are advancing today

against the last remnants
of Isis militants,

backed up by American air strikes
and artillery.

MAN 3: Syrian detention camps...

NAWAL: We had no reality of
what was going on outside,

but we knew
that Isis was shrinking,

and we said we have,
"We are losing time to escape,"

because the smaller they became,
the harder they became.

They even start infighting and
people inside killing each other.

And we chose to stay in Baghouz
because we said,

"This will be maybe the last place
that will be safe,"

and it turned out
it will be the last,

but of course, it was not safe.

We stayed in Baghouz and then
they started to bomb Baghouz.

WOMAN: Islamic State fought hard
for this territory,

and they're fighting hard
to keep hold of it,

but they are losing their caliphate
street by street.

All that remains is a small pocket.

MAN: This battle could be ended
in a matter of hours.

Yet it isn't, because
Isis is using human shields.

NAWAL: I think I was
eight months pregnant,

and they bombed the water factory,

so we had no more
clean drinking water.

Um, there was no more food.

It was so dirty. It was horrible.

And then my son was born.

WOMAN: We're talking about tens of
thousands of women and children

who've been kept
by the Islamic State,

used as human shields
for the last battle.

HAFIDA: My husband, he stayed,
and I went out

and after, he died in Baghouz,

yeah, he stayed till the end.

Yeah. He didn't want to go out,
he said, uh,

"I came to help the Muslims
and I want to stay till the end,"

and he did it.

so many people who went out

that he saw that
Isis was not right,

but there was no solution
any more,

and then he just stayed

"that the women
and the children go,

which was harder on us,

the bombings or the starvation.

The last day I was in, um, Shafa,

my son ate, um, grass also
for dinner that day,

and I said, "This is my last day,
I'm not staying here any more,"

and I dropped everything and left.

I walked out. I just walked.

(SIGHS) I walked out despite
there being, um, IEDs,

and-- and, uh,
not knowing the way out.

I walked out with the Syrians
just to find my way out,

just to save my child and me
from this starvation,

and this, um...
and these bombings and...

and this horrible way of life

that I really regret
for the rest of my life

and that I wish I could just erase.

It was known that Syria
was a war zone

and I still travel it to it
with my own children.

Now, how I did this,
I really don't know.

In the future
I'm thinking only in the future,

when my children grow up, what
I have to tell them about this,

this part of the life
from them, it's really hard.

It was a humiliating defeat.

There's a propaganda video released
by Islamic State's media arm.

Baghdadi, appearing
for the first time in five years,

saying that, while
the caliphate has fallen,

his followers will continue
to wage this war, as he sees it.

Me I was shocked
when Baghouz was finished

and Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
was still alive.

I thought, "How? He could escape?"

And then he was so fat.

So you call yourself
the Caliph of the Islamic State

and you go out and let all
the women and all the children

and even all the men...

I don't have at all
respect for him,

and I call this not Islamic State.

I call this
the State of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi,

because it was just his own fiction
and his own version of a state.

said in Syria

that he had escaped
over the border to Iraq.

to hear the news that he's OK,

SHAMIMA: I got a Red Cross letter
from him last summer,

around the time I turned 20,

and he was telling me that
he's in a good place,

that he has good friends, that
he's just trying to be patient.

He said happy birthday to me,
he told me to stay strong,

he told me to have good company,
be around good women

and just to have patience.

They are making this fast,
you know, look how big it's now.

But who will come? This is the

I'm afraid of some women, yeah?

Because they killed one
Indonesian sister in al-Hawl.

Yeah.She was pregnant.

So bad.

In the camp, you have
many different groups

and some women are really against
us and against what we are saying,

but I think some women
are just orthodox.

a tent shot and she put it on fire

so that the people

And you fight against the fire,
but with buckets of water,

then after, they take three bodies,
small bodies of children,

out of the tent,

and they put them in the blankets.

These women, they all have phones

and they were reading
what I'm saying to journalists,

so I just lived in constant fear

every time a journalist
would come to speak to me,

and everyone is watching me.

I was shocked, but--

because I lived in fear
of these women, like,

On top of that, when these

days are good, some days are bad,

you know, some days I see myself
laying down just for hours

doing nothing, have a little hope

make breakfast for my child,

And it's very scary to just have

teenager

who left London
to join Islamic State

has died from breathing
difficulties in Syria.

that this child,

a baby boy called Jarrah,
died yesterday.

And he was believed to have been
buried immediately,

according to Islamic custom.

It was a premature birth,
but the baby was all right,

so it must have been
the conditions in the camp,

all the problems that she had there
that caused him to get pneumonia.

My heart just broke.

And I had to wait all night
with my baby, when he was dead,

and I just-- I couldn't--
I couldn't sleep all night,

because I-- I knew that these would
be my last moments with him.

And by that point,
it was all over the news,

so everyone kept coming to visit me
and saying, "What happened?

"It's all over the news
that your son died."

And I just, I couldn't handle it,

because, really,
he was my last hope,

he was the only thing
keeping me alive.

And I just...

I didn't know how.

And that day I just cried
for all my children,

I really sat down
and I just cried for all of them,

and no one could help me,
no one could do anything.

is really how strong women can be,

of Islam, which are very important.

I always took them for granted,
and while I was practising

I was more focused
on the appearance

than the essence of Islam.

I learned that-- how important
a human life is,

and what real freedom is
what we had in Holland.

And this is what I realise now,
after all this experience. Yeah.

manipulative and evil people can be

and how many lives
they can destroy.

You can't go backwards,
you can only go forward,

but it doesn't stop me from
regretting.

SHAMIMA: When I was a teenager,
I was so ungrateful.

I was young and naive,
and I felt like I knew everything

and I felt like I was right
and everyone else was wrong.

but now I realise

I love her and I feel
most safe with her,

and most loved with her.

UK, give me a second chance,

because I was still young

I just want them to put aside
