Alaskan mining venture.

money-maker, The Roach.

by a cabled remote,

Nate must walk The Roach
four miles across
fast flowing rivers

and rough wilderness roads.

But to reach its final
resting place,
the 17-ton machine

must cross the raging
Glacier Creek via
an old wooden bridge.

It is what it is,
the road is pretty rough.

The American dream
as a gold miner is Alaska.

I mean, you always
read about it,
you hear about it,

you know,
and that's what always
wanted me to come up here.

I knew it's gonna be
harder on our families,

but they also are passionate
about what we do.

It's an incredible adventure.

We gotta cross. Find
somehow or another.

So, we have to figure
that out next.

We got to start
making some gold.

Up at the claim,
the rest of the team
is hard at work.

This is Old Dan's wash plant.

She runs pretty slow.

So I'm not used to that.
Usually I'm running

and gunning all day,
but better than nothing.

Last week, running
Old Dan at 35 yards per hour,

the crew made eight
and a quarter ounces

of gold from a 1,000 yards
of pay dirt.

Seeing that gold just,
I think I have a little
bit of gold fever.

I think I made
the right decision
by accepting this job.

But overnight rain
and rising groundwater
floods the pappy cut.

Alaska has
so much water.

In this site, we're right
down in the belly of a big-ass
draw,

a river running
by us, waterfall coming in.

Every morning we wake up,
it's the same damn
water situation.

The lake that he's got
to be pulling
material out of.

We want our pay as dry
as we can possibly keep it.

Can't have your loaders
working in a frickin'
swimming pool.

Don't want to dig in water,
you lose all your gold,

your material, up
out the sides.

You got more water,
you get less pay.

The pay
Andrew screens
through the grizzlies

is saturated with water
from the flooded cut.

Too much water in the pay
increases the risk
of washing gold straight

out of Old Dan's sluice box.

This is the most
challenging mine
I've ever operated at,

mostly because I'm a beginner
coming into Alaska,
first-time gold miner.

a steep learning curve.

keeps the pay pile dry

and Old Dan in business,
but it's a temporary fix.

I've only got three
six-inch pumps. So what
we've been doing

is, to keep up, we put two
six-inch pumps de-watering.

We're down to one pump
on Old Dan's wash plant.

Well, guess what?

I need one of these
six-inch pumps to get
water to The Roach.

So I'm really robbing
Peter to pay Paul.

I pull the second pump
from over there in the pit,

and they can't dig
the pit deeper and get down

to the good gold
because I need it to run.

So, long story short,
I need new pumps.

Track's just
a little loose on it.

Kicking over on me.

Try turning this a little bit.

Got that one back on.

After three hours,
The Roach is just a mile
into its four-mile crawl.

That part there
was real rocky.

It gets worse.

The tracks

next thing you know, you got

The last thing we need
is a track falling off, so,
it's gonna take probably

20 minutes to get a truck,
so we can take the cover off,

put some grease in it,

This thing's really
not designed to walk
for four miles down

an Alaska bush road.

on the Lower 48, you know,

you can get anything
you want readily available.
Here, you can't.

Sometimes, you just
have to make it work.

Well, the problem
is this track,
see how loose it is?

We've got to get this
piston pushed out

and you've got to grease it,
but we got the wrong grease fitting.

This is the grease button.

It's got a little sleeve.
It kind of goes over this,
then it greases it up.

But we don't have one,

so we're going to, basically,
just put this on there
and make it work.

We'll be good to go here
in just a few minutes.

It's not ideal,
but you gotta do
what you gotta do right now.

As The Roach crawls,
the adjusters in each track

give the exact amount
of tension for any terrain.

But now the left hand
adjuster has lost pressure,

forcing the track
to loosen and buckle.

Nate's challenge,
re-pressurize the adjuster
with grease.

But without the right fitting
for the European machine,

the mechanic must force
a connection with
the American-made grease gun.

It's getting tight.

I agree.

I think you're in business.

Because I'm telling you,
it's only got
a fewer threads on there.

It could pop off.

If Nate's bush fix fails...

We put a little tension on it,
so it doesn't lose it.

could be stranded for days
until parts arrive.

How can you keep up
with that?

Well, they couldn't.
They flooded it...

The Cliff mine
was one of the most successful

hard rock mines in Valdez.

In just 36 years,
it produced gold,
in today's money,

worth over $93 million.

In 1914, while chasing
a deep vein, miners broke
through the seawall,

flooding the mine,
forcing them to abandon

an underwater
motherlode of gold.

Don returned
in the 1980s to fight
the flood and find gold,

but was ultimately
unsuccessful.

Well, I'm dealing with
the water right now and...

crucial part of a gold

we're going to get our gold,

This is critical to get
the pitch the right way.

If I set it in the wrong spot,
wrong pitch and we lose gold.

To effectively catch gold,
a sluice box must be set

between five and eight
degrees. At this angle,
with the right pressure,

water creates a vortex
behind the riffles.

So heavier gold sinks
into the mats.

If set too flat, pay dirt
packs the riffles until
they are unable to hold gold.

But too steep, the stronger
current carries gold
straight out of the box.

Right there,
I'm pretty close.

That'll give us
enough velocity,
and then, that way,

you get more opportunity
for the gold to fall in.

The problem is,
we're a long ways from
that pond.

And what we got to do
is work with old equipment

onto the claim, and then
I can't run over
it with loaders.

So what we've got to do
is bury a culvert,
put the hose through it,

and then, that way,
we'd have a clear path
through.

We're going
to have enough.

I haven't...
I haven't measured it

out yet. Just grabbed
all the hose we have.

wheel and wheel it off.

Gotta put a lot of lay
flat down, the only problem

with that, we've never
gone this far for water.

We're kind of in a tough spot

in this as we can because

The good news is

The problem
with it is you're pushing

all that water uphill
through a hose.

And as you do that,
you lose the efficiency
of your pump.

So, I need-- really, we need
about a 1,000 gallons
a minute. With those pump,

I think we're probably
going to get 600
to 800 gallons per minute.

To send clean water
419 feet to The Roach,
with maximum water pressure,

they must use
old suction pipe
found on the claim

and connect two
lay-flat hoses together,

plus take the most direct
route under the hayl road
via a culvert.

Okay, go on.
