It looks like there's a river
that runs through there.

it's been mined, though,

Six weeks late
to the mining season,

Dave, Nate,
and new business partner,

Lance Baller chase down
their final lead

at a secret location.

It's very encouraging to look

at the amount of quartz
on here, reminds me

of the white gravels
in the Yukon.

This is a good sign.

I have no other options
at this point.

My guys have to start mining
to pay the bills.

Fairbanks Gold Region,

this remote property lies
in an area responsible

Dagnall Ranch
lies in the shadow

of the historic
Drumlummon lode,

an 1876 hard rock gold strike

that in today's money

saw gold pulled
from the surrounding area

worth $1 billion.

This property has some
historical workings on it.

There's test hole,
one, two test holes.

Those are old time test holes.

That's a good sign.

You know, just over the hill,

Drumlummon mine

that was the biggest
underground mine

for Montana back in the days.

were used by the old timers
to crush hard rock

separating gold from ore.

There's only one sign
for me that

I'm very skeptical,
is it's a dry gulch.

There's no water down there,

so there's going to be
a water issue

and we don't have the time
for a water issue.

These old timers,
they left for a reason.

that is a valid point,

But if the gold
is good enough,

the mountains have been
a hotbed of hard rock mining,

But the placer ground
in the valley

has been left
largely untouched.

Now, Dave heads to a mine
on Glacier Creek.

So Freddy's helping the guy

on the same creek.

tight canyon above,

Was there any
historical workings
on the creek?

This is the first placer claim
on the creek.

I'm sure people knew
there were some gold in here,

but with all the big rocks
and things back in the day,

they didn't have the equipment
to work with it.

Since the early 1900s,

hard rock miners have flocked

to the area surrounding
Glacier Creek,

which has produced
over 137,000 ounces of gold,

in today's money,
worth $246 million.

But it wasn't until the 1980s

that mechanical placer miners

moved into the area

with Dan Dempsey blazing
a trail at Glacier Creek.

Started when I was young
and here I'm old,

- still playing in the dirt, you know.

What size gold is it?

It's pretty fun.
You want to see some of it?

Haven't seen much gold
on this trip.

That's about 20 ounces
or near 20 ounces

and that's a fairly
typical cleanup for us.

Just keeping the mine running

it's one of these deposits

And the reason that it is,

is because the geology
here's so new.

This is a young
geological area.

All of the gold
that's coming out
of these hills

is going down here,

and hopefully it's deposited

where the... the claims
that we're looking at.

The infamous Ring of Fire

is the intersection
of various tectonic plates

spanning five continents.

The Pacific plate
lies near Alaska,

making it one of the most
geologically active

and seismically
sensitive states.

As the plates move,

the mountains
surrounding Valdez
are constantly forced higher.

Over time,

the harsh Alaskan weather
erodes the mountains,

pushing mud, rock,
and minerals down the rivers.

Material that is highly likely
to include gold.

you got in there?

That's probably 10, maybe 15.

on what you want to count.
