in the state was right here.

I know how much is still left.

Jason found gold in the pan
at the Skinner Ranch.

Now it's on him to prove

the ground is valuable enough
to stake a season on.

in that direction

It's the history here.

You know, the old stamp mill

is right in that cluster
of trees.

Right across there
you can see the waste pile

Mmm-hmm.

- From all your tailings, from the hard rock.
- Yep.

101,000 ounces came out of that

and there was other additional
hard rock mines as well.

Gold was
first discovered in hard rock

at Gold Creek
Mining District in 1884.

Over 58 years,
operations in the region

produced lode gold
in today's money

worth $180 million

but there's little evidence
of placer mining in the area.

Historically, hard rock miners,

they kind of snub their nose
at placer miners,

they really, really did.

So whatever was here
along that creek,

the hard rock miners
wouldn't let them touch it.

But Montana
has a ton of it left.

This is ours, at least for now.

That's awesome.

- Let's go get a shovel in the ground.

Let's see
what's on bedrock.

This spot right here

seems to be
the lowest point of the claim.

Jason's theory,

the old timers pulled
so much gold

out of the hard rock,

they left the placer
ground untouched.

His plan,

dig along the low points
of the valley

in the hope of uncovering
alluvial deposits,

rich in gold.

There'd be a lot of gold.

That's where I'd be digging.

Other than Alaska,

I think Montana holds
some of the best

undiscovered placer ground
in the United States.

of placer mining

but Rob says it's probably

of ground left in Montana.

Problem is
there's a family ranch

and they're very apprehensive.

Gold was first discovered

in the Ophir district in 1865.

During its first years
of being mined,

the area produced gold
in today's money

worth over $304 million.

But one spot beneath
an 8,000 acre cattle ranch

remains untouched
by the old timers.

Rob Towner
is the only miner ever

to put boots on the ground
for a test in the 1980s.

But before he could
uncover the riches,

the cattle ranching family
pulled the plug

on his operation.

A fellow, he hired me
to do some testing,

and I think in one week,

our best week
was like 87 ounces.

So, Aryn,
can you tell us a little bit
about the history?

When was this mine founded?

The old timers first found
gold out here in the 1890s.

Uh-huh.

And they found nuggets
on the surface,

so that kind of started
a gold rush.

It's kind of been mined...

intermittently since then.

In 1906,
old timer Frank G. Manley

bought the Shirley Bar claim.

Despite his checkered past
as an outlaw,

Manley made his fortune here
with valuable nugget finds.

With his newfound fortune,

he established the town
of Manly Hot Springs

and started
a luxury hotel business,

turning Shirley Bar

into a real-life rags
to riches story.

Well,
I'm late in the season,

but why aren't you guys mining?

Dave, that's the thing.
I'm a geologist.

- I'm a part time gold miner.
- Okay, got it.

But I'm not a real gold miner
like you.

I've been out here
looking at the geology

and helping with the mine
since 2016.

I can help you with the geology,

but setting up operations,

knowing how to do
the mining operations,

that's all you.

So we do that right
and you set up the operation,

Last mined in 2018,

the 2,400-acre site
comes with a wash plant

and several machines
set to the north of the claim.

Aryn has highlighted
three locations of interest,

so Dave will start prospecting
from the south,

beginning on a flat area
known as a bar or bench.

It's here old timers
made fortunes in the 1900s,

picking nuggets
as they worked the ground.

Now, with the easy gold gone,

it's the fine gold Dave needs
to save his season.

Thinking we should dig here

because this is an extension
of the Shirley Bar,

that first bench
where they found
the most gold.

Hey.

Nate, just go up next
to that spruce

and let's take a look.

The first test hole
in Alaska,

that we're going to dig here,
this is virgin ground.

We're going to...

...try to pull a sample
from the top.

Maybe two or three feet down

and we're going to observe
what's here.

That's all depends on whether
it's economically viable.

Just go about six inches in.

Historically,
this was the area

where they found
the most nuggets

and it's slightly down dip,
but pretty flat.

So there's a pretty good chance

that the Nuggets
probably stopped here

and the gold was stuck here.

We're doing test holes,
but then beyond that,

we know that
there's nuggets here,

so with nuggets,

you'll find it more likely
with a metal detector

than with a pan.

You know, this place here
is like the south on steroids.

It's *bleep* nuts.

I know I dealt with mosquitoes,

but I ain't never dealt
with *bleep*
like this before in my life.

Everything out here wants
to kill you and eat you,

mosquitoes, the bears,
nothing likes you out here.

So the gold has got
to be damn good for us

to come out here
and deal with all this
*bleep*.

One little tiny piece of gold.

All right,
there's something there.

Boom!
I told you
there's nuggets here.

- It is right there.
- Yeah.

No way.

Like right on the surface,

with the metal detector.

We got gold.

Looks like a picker to me,

I'm having a hard time
finding the fine gold,

gold deposits here,

the upper one where you have
more nuggets

and this large one
that's on the downthrown

side of the block

alluvial gravel with gold in it.

Let's keep digging
just maybe
six inches at a time.

As you scrape it back,
I'll pan it
for the fine stuff.

We just keep metal detecting
for the big stuff.

And then eventually we come
in here and do a bulk sample.

We got gold.

- We got some gold.
- Yeah!

95 miles south
of the Arctic Circle.

Keep digging, Nathan.

We found a nugget.

Now we've got to keep looking

That's what we need
to prove the ground.

Especially up here,

we can't be satisfied
with mediocre ground.

We're too far away
from the city,

so it's got to be great ground.

Now, Aryn
found one nugget there,

but you know, one nugget
ain't going to make a season.

so this is all fresh gravel.

- This is virgin.
- This is virgin.

Now we're just trying
to find fine gold.

You can't count
on nuggets.

Pull a sample out of this.

We got a little one there.

six, seven pieces of gold.

Aryn has got us
in a pretty good spot
right now,

it's looking better.

This pay layer is thick.

That's a thicker pay layer, yeah.

Set up and do a bulk sample.

We assumed that things
were available and running.

There's absolutely no way

we can run a bulk sample
with these two equipment.

Next up for inspection,
the excavator.

This isn't fixable.

I mean, you would put
too much money into it.

You don't leave
like this *bleep*
laying around like that.

This is not experienced miners
at all.
I mean, this is *bleep*.

I mean, to leave stuff like this

is it's disrespectful
to anybody.

I wouldn't do this
to my damn worst enemy.

It's pointless.

The only thing that works
around here is these
*bleep* mosquitoes.

We got a problem here.

No motor and gearbox, guys.

This is a pretty good indication

that things weren't going well
out here.

If your equipment
is in this kind of shape,

the money wasn't getting back
to repairs and maintenance.

With the vehicles
and the trommel beyond repair,

Dave is left with one excavator

and no way of running
a larger test on the ground.

So we've got to find something
that works around here

so that we can run
a bulk sample.

You know what, this might work.

What if we just dug a trough

and run water down it
and feed it in there?

There is some wedges.

Pretty primitive, but,
you know, we're doing
like the old timers.

Pitch the rocks off by hand,
run some water down it,

see if there's gold.

Ground sluice,
it's the only thing
we can come up with.

Old timers used ground sluices

to catch gold

by feeding pay directly
into water fed sluice boxes

built into the hillside.

The old timers
made fortunes this way,

but the process was wasteful
and inefficient

and sometimes lost
up to 50 percent of the gold.

I... you know,

I'm sorry we're having
to do this.

You know, I haven't been here
in a while.

You're doing awesome, but I wish

we had a wash plant for you
and pumps and everything.

Well, thanks.
We saw the equipment list

- that's what we made all of our plans off of.
- Yeah.

And then when we get out here...

Completely different
and you were just as surprised

as I was getting out here
and not seeing anything here.

So I put my entire life
savings into this claim.

I'm to the point
where I want it to work,

and I think Dave
is the best chance for that.

If we just ran the material
in an operational way,

I think there is actually
a chance for it to...

finally pay off.

With my knowledge
of the property

and experience here
over the last five years,

I want to help him find gold.

Dave Turin is on
a season launching prospect.

Alaska is a huge risk,

but that's what we do.

Now,
a 25-yard bulk test of pay

will determine if Alaska
is the place the team stakes

this season's mining operation.

We are so far north
here that,

it's got to have a great gold.

it's been a wild prospect
so far.

Rough time trying
to get things going.
