been on a twister?

You know, one of them big,
whirling winds we have now

and again in the middle West?

It's so still before it
strikes, like the world

stopped moving altogether.

And the leaves on the trees
hang like they're dead.

And you just know God has picked
your town out for something

terrible to happen.

That's how it was on the mining
town of Linden, Illinois,

at five minutes to
6:00, on July 2, 1939.

[wind howling]

[indistinct shouting]

The whole thing lasted
only a few minutes.

Swept through like a reaper
and whirled out again.

17 lives wiped out like
flicking an eyelash.

Funny thing about a tornado,
it can hit one house

and completely miss
the one next door.

Take Old Man Linden's
big mansion, never budged

a shingle, but right
down the street,

all that's left of even
a bigger place P-R.

That's Pete Ramsey's
house, brand new it was.

Pete's wife was
celebrating a housewarming.

Now, look at it.

know there was a reason.

Once, people'd have
blabbed if you mentioned
