littlest goat that we have at the

area. She is a handful.

She's got a lot of personality.

Today we're going to take Twilight
Sparkle for a walk around the zoo. It's

enrichment for her because she gets
exercise. She gets to see new things.

it's interesting for the other animals
who pass by because they get to see a

goat walk around.

She's so good. She is. She'll go
anywhere.

She will.

Enrichment is something that we do to
enhance an animal's environment.

It mixes up their day, makes things more
exciting, and it usually elicits a

behavior that they would use in the
wild.

Zach is probably like, oh, okay, another
goat.

Cute. She started to get...

A little bit of arthritis, so movement
is good for her to help work her through

that. It seems like the more she moves,
it seems to get a little bit better. So

we take her on walks to help her with
her mobility.

I think he startled the hornbills. She's
an African pygmy goat, so she's got

really short little stumpy legs.

Her little booty's so cute. I know.

The giraffe is. Staring at twilight.

We do this before the park opens just so
we don't have crowds gathering around

her because everybody wants to pet her.
She's adorable.

The painted dogs are always super
excited to see her.

Here they come.

Those dogs, they have a great sense of
smell. Once they got a whiff of her,

all came running up and were very
interested in what we brought over.

They look very eager to see you, my
dear.

They're licking their chap.

She's pretty fearless. She has an
attitude about her. She thinks she'll

anybody's butt that would mess with her.

Luckily, it's breakfast time for our
painted dogs.

These are very heavy rabbits.

Some of them are huge.

Today we are setting up enrichment for
our painted dogs.

We're going to be making a fake carcass
for them.

We're going to be using a cardboard box
and stuffing it with bunnies.

We like to mimic whatever they would be
consuming out in the wild, so that would

be any sort of large mammal like a zebra
or a warthog.

Okay, I really don't want to touch these
things.

We have a group of eight African painted
dogs. We have Hatari, the father.

He's a very patient single dad.

And we have his seven puppies, three
females and four boys.

We can put some of those logs in there.
It's going to act as the bone.

In the wild, dogs are going to be
tearing carcasses apart.

That's a very natural behavior for them.
So we just want to be able to kind of

make the best carcass that we possibly
can for the dogs.

Appetizing. So actually how painted dog
packs work is the parents will actually

let the babies eat first. So even though
they're not babies, they are a few

years old, Hattari will hang out in the
back and he's not really going to go for

the food until the puppies have had
their fair share.

Beautiful. I love it. I think we're good

Painted dogs are very different from
domestic dogs.

They're very cute on the outside when
you're looking at them through the

but they are predators. They have an
extremely successful rate when it comes

They're definitely not anything I would
ever put my hands near.

Hattari has been having some
difficulties with allergies lately.

His eyes are getting pretty crusty. His
muzzle really gets a lot more swollen.

With Florida's allergy season fast
approaching, we're definitely going to

to step in and help Hattari out a little

We're going to be transferring him up to
the hospital later this week so the

doctors can take lots of tests and

Lady is one of our half -langer horses
that live in the petting zoo.

She is sassy, opinionated, and
definitely not ladylike. So it's really

that her name is Lady.

She's my favorite pony.

She's a big sweetheart, but she
definitely can push you around as well.

She wants to see what's going on down
there.

Oh, yep, it's going up her leg and her
thigh.

And it feels really hard.

Just a few weeks ago, we noticed that
there was a growth on Lady's mammary

gland. And it was pretty strange. It was
almost like golf ball size and shape.

And then just over a couple of days, it
started to grow exponentially. And

that's when we started to get really
worried.

I'm really concerned about it just
because it is getting so big so fast.

It was like lemon size when I first saw
it. And now I almost feel like it's

football size.

We just don't know what it is and what
is causing it to grow.

The vets have decided that best case
scenario is to give her some type of

surgery to remove that mass because if
it continues to grow, it could possibly

hinder her in the future.

Well, we can go ahead and get her
inside. Dr. Lauren said she wanted to

down to get that blood sample. What do
you think? Go see Dr. Lauren. You like

Dr. Lauren. Today I'm going to go check
in on Lady. I'm going to get some blood

work on her.

Here at Zoo Tampa, we have two Saimeng,
a breeding pair, Sensei and Hutan.

Saimengs are a type of gibbon, and
they're found in Asia.

They are known for their very loud
vocalizations.

They have these unique inflatable throat
sacks that can amplify their booming

calls and can be heard up to two miles
away.

A couple of times a day, usually, they
will do a duet, and it's kind of a

bonding ritual between a pair, and the
longer the pair is together, the more

complicated their song becomes, and so
it's been interesting to watch these as

they have developed their pair bond.

This morning, I got a call from Jane,
and she was very excited to tell me that

we had a chiming baby.

Look at that little cutie pie.

I was so excited, I ran straight to the
Simon building.

I wanted to see that baby right away.

Baby's nursing right now. Eyes are
bright, wide open.

We suspected she might be pregnant, but
we certainly had not verified anything.

She just started to look a little bit
chubby. And we came in this morning, and

lo and behold, we have a new Simon.

Everything is looking really great so
far.

We are so ecstatic about this new baby,
Saime. She's been on birth control, so

sometimes oopsies happen, and this was
an oopsie, but I'm really excited to go

look at it this morning.

With primate babies, that initial
bonding period with the mother and the

extremely important.

We only intervene if there's an
indication to intervene.

So if the baby's holding on, nursing,
we're seeing good maternal behavior on

part of mom, everything's going really
well, they know what they're doing, and

we don't need to do anything.

She holds her legs up. She, like,
doesn't trust that baby's going to hold

Oh, what a good mom.

Well, I don't think that baby could look
any better.

If you're good with it, I think Jane and
I are both comfortable. Yeah. That

baby's hanging on, and she does her
little extra thing to make sure.

We are going to let Saimeng, mom, dad,
and baby out for the first time. They're

doing fantastic, so we think that she's
ready to go outside.

Their happy place is up in the trees,
even with a brand new baby.

Seeing Hutan take the baby all the way
up to the top of their habitat is scary.

All of our hearts were just frozen.

You can't just stay still, huh?

We got a surprise at the zoo this
morning. We got a baby Simon. It was a

surprise to me. I was not expecting it
at all.

Oh, my God.

It's nerve -wracking to me still to
watch an animal go straight out with a

-new baby and go straight to the top of
their enclosure. I would be a helicopter

mom up there where I would just be like,
no, no, you're not doing that.

Primate babies, they've got to be able
to hold on right from the get -go

you can imagine in the wild, mom is...

swinging way high up in the Asian
forest. So that baby's got to be born

and have that instinct to hold on
because they're going to be moving

trees with their mom. But that's what
they do.

normal behavior, and the best thing to
do is to treat them like their normal

routine, and that's what happens in the
wild.

You can't just say so, huh?

She's walking the tightrope. She's
moving around the habitat. She is really

to watch because she's doing this very
carefully. She's making sure she's

the baby extra support when she's doing
this, but she's on her normal routine

doing what she would normally do.

And Sensei's like, I can't be far away
from my baby.

Timings are kind of unique among
primates where the male is very involved

taking care of babies. They're a
monogamous pair, which means that they

bond and stay together for life.

I just love what a good dad Sensei is.
How much he already loves that baby. He

wants to see that baby. He wants to get
as close as he can. But he's being very

respectful of Hutan, who isn't quite
ready for him to be that close.

Who loves that baby more, him or us? I
don't know. I don't know either.

Get her to go.

Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.

They grow up so fast.

We have three Binturong. We have Soli,
who is our male, Miladi, who is our

female, and then we also have Kartika,
who is their little girl.

A Binturong is also known as a bear cat.

They are found in the forests of Asia.
They are neither bear nor cat.

They are a species all on their own.

I absolutely love them. I mean, it would
be hard not to. They are very curious.

They always keep us on our toes, and
they have such different personalities

you never know what you're going to get.

Kartika, she is about four months old
now and due for her last set of

She's just been a lot of fun to watch
her grow and watch her personality

develop. Gosh, I can't get over how big
she's getting. She is getting really

big. Hopefully she'll cooperate.

It took the animal care team about a
month to train Kartika to go into the

little half PVC tube that allows us to
give her her vaccine voluntarily.

That's a good girl.

She's very, very calm and is accepting
of the vaccination.

Binturong are classified as a vulnerable
species.

They're vulnerable to extinction.

So watching Cartica grow and hitting
those milestones is really important for

to be able to provide the best care that
we possibly can for this species.

vaccines.

She was a complete champ. Now she's all
done until she's about a year old.

The tube works so great.

She's also very food motivated. She goes
bananas for bananas.

We have had the Binturong for about two
years. Our goal was to get them here,

get to know them, get them introduced,
maybe have a baby, which we succeeded

And now that they are doing really well
and they're growing, we want to be able

to give them an area where our guests
can see them and enjoy them as much as

do. So we have some really exciting
changes coming up for our Binturong

There is planning and renovations to one
of the enclosures on the public area.

We're very excited to get them over
there.

There's lots of trees for them to climb
on.

They're going to have a nice water
feature.

And once that's ready, then the whole
family group will be moving out for

everybody to be able to see Hartika grow
and see her and her mom and dad.

I love working with apex predators.

They provide such a unique challenge.

These animals are gorgeous. They're
smart.

They're so much fun to watch and work
with. But you always need to keep in

that apex predators like tigers, bears,
wolves, and a dog are extremely

dangerous.

Over the past year or so, Hattari
started to develop an allergic reaction

something in the environment.

When you look at him at certain times of
the year during certain seasons, he'll

get puffy eyes, he'll kind of get like a
puffy snout, and he'll scratch at it.

We have him on allergy medicine right
now, but it's not totally taken care of,

so we need to figure out kind of what's
going on and what's going to be the best

route for him. They're starting to
separate him now. Let me set up up here

that way I'm out of their way.

Right now, we're going to do a full
immobilization on Hattari so we can get

everything we need to set him up for
success.

Once he's secure, we're going to go in,
remove him, and transport him up to the

hospital where we can get his procedure
going.

Oh, he's mad.

He says, I'm not dumb. I've done this
before.

One of the things that we have to do to
safely get hands on African Painted Dogs

is to immobilize them with darning.

You guys are okay.

Sedation is something that we do
routinely for us to be able to safely

on our patients, but in doing so, we
have to still be mindful of the

risk.

breathing well. The next step is just

kind of worry, are they still taking

That's always something you have to

As soon as Hattari is down, the clock
starts ticking. And now everybody has to

work together to make sure that this
procedure goes off without a hitch.

the hospital with Hattari.

We're on our way up to the hospital.

We just noticed that he's not really
taking any breaths on his own, which can

concerning. Hattari's breathing has
slowed down substantially, so it's got

Today we're doing a full workup on
Hattari. We're hoping to find just some

answers on what is actually causing
Hattari's allergies and see if there's

you're kind of scared for him. We want

make sure that we're doing everything in
our power, that he makes it through

this entire process.

He's already intubated. I just really
need to get a good heart rate on him.

His color is good. His color's much
improved.

Atari seems stable. He's got a good
heartbeat. His respiration rate is going

well. I feel comfortable moving forward
with his exam.

They can scan when it gets chronic like
that. It's called lichenification, like

lichen, and that just means that it's
been just very chronic.

It's not often that I'm getting hands on
Hattari, so I want to really make the

on him breathing on his own.

I'm going to give him a breath and then
let's disconnect him and put him butt

first into the crate.

This is a really important part of the
procedure, just as important as the

induction and the whole workup is a safe
recovery.

Get the nose out. That way I've got
access to the airway.

He's got reversals in.

The minute we start to see arousal, pull
it. Breathing okay? Mm -hmm. Good. He's

picking up.

We're just watching, watching, waiting
for him to make a little subtle

And all of a sudden, he just tried to
move his head. Tube comes out, door

Right now, he's recovered. He's in the
crate. We're going to make sure that

stable and then move him back to the
habitat and get him back in with the

kind of hear him working in that crate

It's very intimidating.

look at blood work, and we'll have the

is really valuable information for us to

get a sense of Hattari's overall health.

I do feel really bad for him. I want him
to feel more comfortable, so we're just

going to keep him on meds for now, and
then hopefully see if we have any

for those allergies.

I love the petting zoo animals just
because they all have their own

He just really enjoys rubbing your face.

They love being with you, which I think
is an awesome thing for animals to want.

So since COVID -19 hit for the past
year, the petting zoo has been closed.

So they're not getting all the guest
interaction that they used to. We have

make sure that we're giving them all the
tactile, all the petting, all the

scratches to get that attention that
they crave.

I do think the goats definitely miss the
interaction.

I know there's all these people that you
want to love.

They are social animals, so they really
do love the attention.

And, of course, I don't mind that at all
because that means I get to spend extra

time with my animals.

I am definitely a one woman. I'm
outnumbered by goats.

I know I'm this lady, too, but she's in
good hands.

Loaded on the trailer with apple slices
yesterday.

Excellent.

The lady's having her surgery today.
She's at an equine surgical facility.

She has a mass growing on one of her
mammary glands.

So she's basically having a radical
mastectomy. Very uncommon in horses for

something like this to happen, which is
why she's here to have a board

-certified surgeon do her surgery.

So this is her mammary tissue, and
there's just kind of a mass -like

in this region.

About three weeks ago, the U contacted
us to let us know that there was some

swelling on Lady's left mammary. In a
matter of a couple weeks, it has

about three times its size. It does make
me a little bit more concerned that it

might be cancer.

Everyone ready? Yes.

Inducing.

For surgery, we're going to give an
injectable anesthesia, which is going to

have her lay down.

Once they're anesthetized, we have a
hoist system that will pick them up and

them onto the table.

This is considered very safe. It looks a
little bit strange because they're kind

of hanging upside down, but they're very
well supported and it's a safe way to

transport them.

I want her butt as close to the back as
possible.

Horse surgeries are pretty intense when
they're laying on their back like that.

Obviously, their legs are the most
dangerous part for them kicking. So

the surgeon right there in between those
back legs, the anesthesia person needs

to really be careful that that animal is
not going to move a muscle because it's

a big, dangerous animal to have under
anesthesia.

All right, are you guys good to buy a
cup?

Yes, we are.

Cutting. The mammary gland has very
large blood vessels that go to it, so

going to be essential to find those
blood vessels and tie them off before

cut them, and then remove the tissue as
gently as I can to take it away from her

body. First giant vessel. See that? Oh,
my gosh. Yeah, very big.

Go ahead and cut, please.

I can't dissect all the way here, so I'm
just trying to find the best path that

I can take.

Today we're going to do a mastectomy on
Lady's mammary region. It's a little bit

risky based on the amount of blood
vessels that are going to it.

Cut, please.

That'll make you sweat a little bit.

It feels funny to us to turn one of our
animals over to somebody else because

we're so used to taking care of them
ourselves.

Everybody at the hospital wishes they
were here right now.

Definitely going to be taking some
pictures and letting everybody know how

doing. Everybody's behind Lady 100%. So
that, I think, was the one that made her

concerned. I set it off quite well.

Okay. Her mammary gland is significantly
bigger than what you would expect.

Worst case scenario is cancer.

We'll send the mammary tissue off for
them to look at under a microscope, and

they'll kind of tell us what type of
tissue it is and what we have going on.

You should start being able to close her
now.

They warned us that a lot of times it
splits open when they stand up, and I

could see why.

It's a big opening, and we had a hard
time keeping it closed, which is why

kind of a long recovery.

I'm sure they will close it the best
they possibly can.

If everything can come off, we're done.

Now that she's done, we're going to lay
her on a big mat. It supports their

muscles when they're laying as the
anesthesia is wearing off.

I brought Lady some carrots.

When you visit your friend in the
hospital, you bring them some flowers,

when you visit your horse, you bring
them carrots, right?

As soon as her doctor says it's okay,
she will definitely get to have some

carrots. Hello. Dr. Mark, how did it all
go? It went well, yes. I'm happy with

the margins and everything. Good. The
tissue around that was kind of inflamed

and irritated, so definitely we need to
get that sent off for histopath to see

what we're dealing with. All right. I
hope it stays closed when she wakes up.

Yes, I know. There's a lot of tension on
that. Yeah, that defect is quite the

thing to close. It is. There she goes.

The lady is back up on her feet. She's
going to have about two weeks where

trying to get the skin to heal, but
she'll be able to go back to her normal

So baby is actually two weeks old today,
doing all of the milestones we'd expect

both mom and baby's progress.

Recently, we did work up on Hatari just
to do an overall health assessment, but

also to try to figure out what is going
on with his allergies entering the

springtime season.

Hi. Good morning. I just wanted to check
in on Hattari. We've been on the

antibiotics and just wanted to see if
the antibiotics were helping at all.

It's tough. It's tough, yeah? Yeah, he's
very puffy, really, really itching with

his front paws. Okay, okay.

buddy.

Recently we did a biopsy and we got a
little sample of his skin to submit to

lab. It showed a lot of chronic
inflammation and the findings were very

consistent with environmental allergies.

It seems that his left eye is starting
to get worse.

Yeah, he definitely is.

He might need to bump up his epical.
Yeah.

We've tried to taper back his medication
to a lowest effective dose, but every

single time he erupts with more lesions.
So given the information that we have

with the biopsy, with the blood work, we
can safely continue him on this

medication, but at a higher dose.

All right, I think I'll get that
started. We'll continue the antibiotics.

we can to make sure that Hattari, as he

gets into his golden years, has a really

It's been a while since she's had her
surgery, and I'm just going to see how

she's healing up. Hello.

Hi. How's Lady?

She's fantastic.

Awesome. The team has been super
diligent in doing her aftercare, done

hydrotherapy, wound care, walking her.

All of this was to help her heal.

So we got some of the biopsy results for
the left gland. I'm still waiting for

everything on the right, but... I'm
definitely hoping that this is not life

-threatening. I've been with Lady for at
least five years now, so she means a

lot to me. So I'm hoping for some good
news.

But the good news is it didn't come back
as cancer. It came back as severe

inflammation. The exact cause was not
determined, but could certainly be

hormonally induced.

And even though it wasn't cancer, that
would have still been pretty dangerous

is what's going to be best for her in

long run.

I was hoping to check her incision site
and see what it looks like today.

We can definitely try.

It's nice and pink. It looks super
healthy. It's healing up really nicely.

Walking, lady, is just really important
for her health. This is very much like

physical therapy. Getting her that
exercise is very important, and it's a

process. Today she's walking incredibly
well considering how recent her surgery

was, so we're really excited to see
that.

You would never know that she even had
surgery.

She's walking great, going further
distances.

She has so much energy.

She's going to do this all day.

We are seeing no signs of pain at all.
There's no stiffness. There's no

of any side, any leg. There's no weird
gait going on. She is perfectly perfect.

She did really well. You did so good. I
