I literally just fly everywhere.

They're loving it.

We're talking about some snacks for the
orangutans.

It's a nice treat for the middle of the
day to kind of get them some exercise.

Look at Sophie.

Then after this, they can take a nice
little nap.

So close. In my mouth. She's not going
to let you get it, Gojo. We have eight

orangutans living all together.

It's definitely unique.

Just coming out here and watching them
for a couple minutes, you're bound to

laugh or giggle at something funny that
they're doing.

By nature, orangutans are solitary
animals, which means they usually live

Ours, they seem to all like to be
together.

A little bit chaotic at times.

Not nice feeding.

The adults are pretty easy to tell
apart.

You can always tell Goyang. He's our
only adult male.

He is actually chasing Didi right now.

There he goes.

Goyang, if he had it his way, he would
take all the food.

He's not really great at sharing.

I think that says it all right there.

Goyan came to us about seven years ago
to be part of our breeding program here,

and he has fulfilled his obligations.

He is the father of the three kids that
we have, and that's very important for

this critically endangered species.

And not only that, they have a great
time playing together.

Randy's up there out of sight.

Randy is a teenager.

She's the only teenager that we have.

She's in that awkward stage of still
really playful, loves to play with the

kids, but is also becoming an adult.

She's 12 years old, and she's currently
pregnant, so we're on baby watch.

We're super, super excited about Randy's
baby, and being a first -time mom,

we're just full of Randy. Keeping our
fingers crossed that everything's going

go well and she's going to be the
excellent mom that we know she can be.

All right, Randy. Good job.

Oh, my goodness gracious.

Silvio is our southern vestige to
Mandua, and he is officially retired in

ambassador department right now.

He's really, really super playful. He
has a huge personality.

He's a team favorite. Everyone on our
team just adores him.

In the wild, they can live anywhere
between four to six years old, and he is

turning 10 years old.

You know, if we see a good termite log.

He gets for his dibs.

A couple years ago, we were really
scared that we were going to lose

Have you lost some weight recently?

I've found a couple of enlarged lymph
nodes.

Multiple lymph nodes blown up like that.
Yeah, you start thinking about cancer.

But he's still with us.

He's still doing really well, and we're
still here to be with him, and so we're

super excited to celebrate his birthday.

So what I'm going to do is I'm going to
prep him a cake.

Okay, so I just finished Silvio's three
-tier insectivore cake.

Okay, you little baker.

Oh, he's going to love that.

Yeah. It'll be all set for his party
tomorrow.

I just love him so much.

All right, Albert, you ready to go?

I know, I know, it's raining.

Tapirs are one of those animals that
don't totally make sense.

All right, buddy, have a great day.

They have a long nose, but they're not
really related to an elephant.

They're definitely something to behold.

He thinks he's going to get wet.

He becomes a little baby about it.

They are from the rainforest, so I never
understood why he acts like getting

rained on is such a big deal.

Me and Albert, I like to think, have a
really strong connection.

There are not too many guys on this
team, so I always feel like I have a

bond with the male animal. I always tell
him, you and me have to stick together.

I know I really love him, and I think he
likes me.

Albert has this weird gait, kind of like
a splay kickback when he walks

sometimes.

And it goes in waves where it gets more
severe.

I don't know what's really triggering
it, but we have seen it start happening

little bit more recently.

It's just very interesting.

Albert!

Hey, bud.

And so now we really need to get some
radiographs done just to see what's

on with him.

I think he'll let us do anything as long
as we keep scratching him.

Yeah, I think he's in a little taper
coma now.

KP and I are working on his behavior
today.

X -ray plate going in.

To get him used to a couple of big,
scary things. It's a big machine, lots

noise. Wow,

that sounds like the real thing, Albert.

And he has not cared.

He has to get used to a trainer being
arched over him, possibly a plate

his hip on his other side.

As much as we can get him used to and
comfortable, then day of, it'll be a

breeze.

Hopefully. I said that out loud. Knock
on wood somewhere. Yeah, he's been great

until you said that. Yep.

We've got this.

The mornings at the zoo are my favorite
time of the day. The animals are super

excited to see you in the morning
because they can eat breakfast.

Let's go, Rex!

We have three Hartman's Mountain zebras
here at Zoo Tampa.

We have Rex, father of our two foals
that we have, Aziza and Rafiki.

You'll notice that Aziza, her back end
is a little bit larger than Rafiki's,

which is how we tell them apart.

These are definitely the cutest butts in
the zoo.

Oh, man, this is a really sad story
because Rafiki lost his mother, and the

finished, like, hand -rearing him. He
was really young when his mother passed.

The team spent a lot of time with him.

We had to step in and act as his mother,
and we needed to figure out what they

liked to eat.

You guys are so cute and so fluffy.

He didn't like baby food at all, and he
didn't like applesauce. He thought those

smelled really weird.

They grow up so fast, and he was always
so shy.

He's grown from a little orphan foal to
now this young stallion.

I'm super proud of him.

It's okay.

I see you.

At two years old, our zebra foals are
starting to reach maturity, so we don't

want them to breed together, obviously,
because they are brother and sister.

Their breakfast.

So in order to prevent that, we're going
to send Rafiki to a new home. That's

good. Zebras are good to come. So that
he can live with other females and

hopefully produce some offspring to help
that population.

Why are you looking at me like that?

I'm going to miss you, don't worry.

They're like, what is happening?

Mountain zebra are a lot different than
common plain zebra. They're a lot

smaller, but they also have a much
larger heart because they live in such

altitudes. Good girl. Come on.

Aziza's the brave one, so normally she
goes first.

I think they're definitely going to miss
each other.

They've been together their whole lives,
and it's just been the two of them

hanging out, getting to know the world
together.

They're so cute.

We're going to miss them a lot.

We had a call from a guest. They had
dropped a hat into the orangutan habitat

and wanted us to try to get it back for
them.

The primates asked me, I have visual on
the hat. Can you help me shift

orangutans inside?

So Jane had asked all the orangutans to
come inside.

I noticed that all the other orangutans
were very interested in Randy. They were

coming up, getting close to her,
sniffing her, checking her out.

And so I started to watch Randy a little
closer, and she was giving some signs

that she might be in labor.

Hey, I think you guys might want to head
down to the orangutan building. I think

Randy is in labor.

She's giving birth right now.

She's actually having it now?

Oh, my gosh.

I was over the moon excited to see that
birth.

I think we were all holding our breath.

This is amazing.

Well, she just makes it look easy,

Perfect baby right there.

Oh, my.

Randy, you're a mom.

And I think it's a boy.

That's precious.

Randy, being a first -time mom and
really having no experience with this,

knew what to do right away.

To hear that baby for the first time and
to see Randy, the baby was a little

gurgly, and Randy knew immediately to
just take action and suck any fluid away

from baby's mouth so that it could
breathe.

There's nothing cuter than an orangutan
baby.

They have the most adorable faces.

Oh, my gosh.

And it's important.

Bornean orangutans are endangered. So to
see another orangutan be born, not only

to witness the connection between mom
and baby, but to know that another

orangutan is in the population, it's
absolutely amazing.

I love how she investigates his entire
body, like every tip of the toe.

She's like, toes, perfect.

Belly, perfect.

My baby, perfect.

She's working on the umbilical cord
right now.

She's like, this thing is in the way.

Sweet. She has just been super mom from
the first minute.

Randy, we're so proud of you.

She's a little rock star.

She is.

I love working at the aviary department.

So many different species and you just
got to love them.

Today I'm going to check out one of the
playing foxes.

So we're going to enter slowly so they
can kind of get used to it.

Hi guys, we're coming on in.

Hi. When I first met the bats, I was
kind of scared about them. All right,

But they're like sky puppies, so they're
really cute.

Some of them are mean. Some of them are
very nice and curious.

I think a lot of us bat keepers, we do
enjoy the smell.

That's really weird. But these guys do
have a distinct muskiness to them, and

all do enjoy that kind of weird smell.

Hi, Guapo.

Guapo is our 12 -year -old Malane flying
fox.

So handsome.

For the past couple of weeks with Guapo,
we've noticed this bump, basically on

his chin. This chin bump started to get
progressively bigger.

I'm definitely concerned as to what it
is. Basically, is it cancerous or not?

So right now, I'm going to try and get a
closer look at that chin bump.

I have nectar, part of their main diet.
They are flower pollinators and seed

dispersers. And in the wild, they are
actually very important.

All right, I'm going to come in with
some nectar for Guapo here.

All right, guys.

Yeah, what is this? You know what this
is.

Oh, no.

It has grown.

That's all you want?

It's all right, bud.

That's pretty worrying for me.

Awesome. Have you guys ever fed giraffe
before?

Elephants actually have four teeth.

I don't know how well they're going to
separate.

Oh, look, he's like literally right
there. Today we are doing a pre

health exam on Rafiki, our young
Hartman's mountain zebra.

He is set to be transferred to another
facility.

And so before we do that, we just want
to make sure he's all healthy and good

go.

The biggest worry today is that Rafiki
and Aziza are rarely separated, and I'm

just a little bit concerned that he
could get really worked up and then our

darting process could be a little bit
more tricky.

Our goal is to make this as least
stressful as possible on the animal. You

the calmer it is, the easier it is for
them to go under, and the quicker we can

start our procedure.

Anytime we're getting ready to
administer a dart to an animal, it's

little bit adrenaline pumping.

We have human safety to consider. We
have animal safety.

There's a lot of risk.

Everybody's clear from the other side,
Madison.

My role is to make sure that the animal
is safely anesthetized and he's safe for

humans to approach and handle.

The

team

spent so much time building a really
strong relationship with Rafiki.

Is he literally going to come right up
to you, Madison?

Probably. All that work that we've put
in, it's going to pay off.

He's like walking right up to Melissa.

Really facing right at me, which I
didn't want.

Dart's in at just that, about 4 -0, so.

I think he's feeling it.

He just went right into the corner and
decided that he just needed some sleep,

so he just laid down.

Hospital to hospital, he is down.

Okay, we've got a lot to do, so once
he's down, the clock starts ticking.

We're going to bring our cart over.
Okay, now it's go time.

These animals, although we have good
relationships with them, they are still

wild animal.

When we come into their space, that is
still something that can be

and unsafe.

Good boy.

How's he doing, Madison?

Today we are doing a pre -shipment
health exam on Rafiki, our young

mountain zebra.

You're all right. This exam is a big
production.

because we need to move him to his
temporary holding enclosure, and then we

need a pre -shipment health assessment,
and we don't have much time.

Rafiki is a couple hundred pounds.

He is a tank.

We wanted to move him first because
there's a lot of jostling, lifting, so

very stimulating.

So we wanted to do that when he is
deepest under anesthesia.

Once the animal is anesthetized, it is
important to work really quickly, really

efficiently, very safely.

because we are using injectable
anesthetic medications, and those do

finite amount of time before they're
metabolized and out of the system. How

time do you think we have?

We've got seven minutes.

The next step is to do the medical exam,
do his vaccinations, make sure that he

looks like he's in good condition.

Let's do that microchip.

Michelle's getting blood.

Everything looks good repro -wise.

Turning into a stallion.

Seeing any movement, Madison?

start just getting some folks out, okay?

When we wake an animal up after an
immobilization, we definitely want to be

there with them just to keep control of
their head so they don't do a face dive

and a somersault.

He's going to be joining another group
of zebras and eventually go on to start

family of his own.

This is a great ending to Rafiki's story
here at Zoo Tampa.

Makes us very nervous because she likes
to go to the tippy top of the habitat,

We're all down there holding our breath.

I don't think she trusts him to hold on
yet because she's still doing a lot of

When you see that tiny baby up that
high, all of us moms are down on the

just, like, holding our breath. She let

It does make us human land dwellers a
little nervous, yeah.

Yep, as high as she can go.

So she's probably about 50 feet or so
off the ground when she's up there.

I just love the little hands.

You can see the little hands come out.

I've had a baby orangutan grab one of my
hair before. They hold on tight.

They hold on real tight.

All we have to do is trust in Randy. She
knows what's okay, and so as long as we

just let her take care of the baby,
she's going to do great.

As much as we love to share her baby all
day, she's doing great, and we don't

need to, so stop staring at me.

Being the only man on an all -female
team. Hi, Bubba. I find myself talking

Johnny about football a lot. But see,
this isn't bad, right? We're just

Good boy.

One of the things I absolutely love
about Mata is every morning when I walk

the building, we play and, like, fake
stalk each other.

And then he always acts like he gets me
with, like, a tiny little, ooh, at the

end.

When an animal doesn't have any care in
the world and they choose to spend time

with you, it's amazing.

It's just really fulfilling.

Alberto, you awake, dude?

Today's the day. We're going to get some
good pictures of your back.

Today we are going to attempt to get
some x -rays on Albert. He's our male

Malayan tapir, and he's just been kind
of looking a little ouchy in his hips.

I mean, Alpert's been kind of doing this
weird hind step for quite some time, so

we're trying to get x -rays of the back
part of his spine and his pelvis, see if

there's any arthritis or if there's
anything else going on.

It's game time, buddy.

We would love to go ahead and figure out
what's going on.

God, I love your nose.

He was the first animal I trained on
when I transferred to Asia, so I have a

little bit of a soft spot for him.

And how could you not? He's adorable.

So the team's gotten a bit creative.

Colin's been working super hard on this.
And Albert's such a great patient. I

know he's going to be very cooperative
with us today, and I just jinxed it.

Albert is possibly the most food
-motivated animal I know.

Hi. He pretty much no longer cares
what's going on as long as he knows I

Oh, you've got to come up a little bit

We use the black tub to help get his hip
about as close as it needs to be to the

mesh. Oh, no.

We're trying to get that perfect
distance where we can reach his spine

hips. You can just back him up just a
little bit.

He doesn't reverse the best.

We're getting there. It's challenging
getting images like this voluntarily on

We have amazing tapirs here, but we do
have to be careful when working around

them. We are not free contact with these
animals, but the way that Colin's

handling Albert and their relationship
just really instills a lot of trust.

So we are preparing ourselves to catch
up Guapo and bring him over to our vet

hospital. Because they'll tell us what
this chin bump actually is.

Malayan flying foxes are gigantic bats.

Their wingspan can get upwards to five
and a half to six feet long.

I know, bud.

Which is very terrifying to some people.

But that's just more of them to love.

Just his personality, just being
independent and being strong.

He's a great bat.

I've enjoyed every moment with Guapo,

habitat to the clinic.

With Guapo's chin bump, I'm definitely
concerned as to what it is. Could be

cancerous, could be inflamed.

We just want it looked at.

Very good. Yeah, he's calm for the most
part. Guapo has had a little swelling on

his chin.

Okay, Guaps. It's always in the same
spot and it keeps coming back.

So we decided that it's time for us to
get a biopsy, really, and try to figure

out what exactly has been going on.

We're starting gas anesthesia.

Seeing him go under, it kind of broke my
heart a little because I don't want to

see my boy get...

hurt or anything, but this is definitely
necessary to check out this small bump.

How does it look, Sarah? It's
interesting. It does feel, sorry, pretty

also just like there's maybe just some
fluid inside.

So I'm going to go for it. These guys
are one of my favorite species.

This particular species' name is
vampiris, so Teropus vampiris,

which is like vampire.

But these guys are actually mostly fruit
eaters. So they eat fruit and nectar,

which is really important for their
ecosystem.

We're sending out the biopsy to get a
really good look under the microscope,

that will be the most telling.

Doing well under anesthesia? Yep, yep.
Heart rate 70.

Hopper buddy.

I see your nose moving.

It will be definitely devastating if we
do receive bad results about this bump,

but we'll make the best out of
everything for Guapo.

It's always fun when we get to watch
their personalities come out.

I always loved the great ape.

growing up, but I actually pursued
business and marketing for my bachelor's

degree and wasn't very fulfilled, so I
started volunteering at a zoo.

I would leave my job working in business
looking really nice. I would go to the

zoo and I would leave filthy, dirty, and
I loved it. I was so happy, so proud of

myself for the work that I was doing.

Look who's here.

So that's when I really clicked to me
that this is where I was supposed to be.

What are you doing?

My parents, I was nervous to tell them
at first. They were like, yes, this is

what you should have done all along.

You got it. Even today, working with
orangutans every day, I am blown away by

the things that they do. Oh, my God.

This afternoon, we are going to try and
collect some milk from Randy.

This is an important study that is being
done with orangutan moms all over the

world.

to find out what the babies actually
need.

This study is really important to be
able to see what nutritional components

in breast milk. They help orphaned
orangutans over in Borneo.

They want samples from lactating
females.

Up until this point, our older moms
haven't been willing to participate. We

everything voluntary, so it's completely
up to them.

And they've decided that they're going
to keep it all for their babies, and

that's okay.

Sure.

Perfect foot.

We really hope that Randy will be our
first mom willing to give a milk sample.

Devin and I are... trying to collect
some milk from our new mom, Randy.

She has to be comfortable getting that

us to physically touch.

So that's probably the most important
step.

This is definitely going to take a lot
of trust with Randy, and really we're

going to rely on our relationship that
we have.

them as much enrichment, as much

attention as I can.

Basically, they are my favorite animal
at the zoo.

They're very bubbly. They have a whole
bunch of personality.

They're basically like golden retrievers
in the water. They love their dog toys.

And I like to put enrichment galore.

Who knows? They actually might try to
push a ball around the pool.

Kind of like a reverse bobbing for
apples.

They're not quite understanding it yet.

Their mouth is on the very bottom, so
they have to push it down to get some

shrimp velvet.

Oh, free -for -all.

Oh, wow, Tracy's pushing it around the
pool.

So you have Tracy here, and you have
Martha over there.

We have our two moms, and their two
pups.

I call them our diva moms.

They are very sassy, the queen bees of
the pool.

This is Brownie right here.

She's one of our pups. I love to spoil
her.

So every single time that Brownie is in
front of us, I always try to give her an

extra treat because she's the cutest
little stingray in our pool.

So the stingrays have learned that if
they get the wiffle ball actually near

side of the pool, they can... push the
wiffle ball to the wall to hold the

and they're able to propel themselves up
a little bit to get over the strip.

I would definitely say that they have
learned something.

Yay, you got it!

Stingrays are definitely a lot smarter
than what people give them credit for.

Hey, what are you doing, Quapaw?

Guapo was having a swelling on the base
of his chin. It would kind of come and

go. There was some concern about the
potential of something cancerous.

I've been very anxious to find out
what's causing this bump to arise in

chin.

It's kind of scary.

You just don't want to ever see your
animal hurting.

We're headed over to Micah to give him
the results of Guapo's biopsy.

No. The good news is he didn't find
anything that looked neoplastic or like

Jane and Ashley.

heartland mountain zebra, Rafiki, to go

new home in Cleveland, Ohio.

I had such a big role in helping raise
him up into the zebra he is. You're all

So I have a really strong bond with him.

He has these big, beautiful black eyes
that just look into your heart.

He's going to go do great big things.

I've got some good news for you.

We caught up with Dr. Lauren, and
there's no sign really of arthritis or

other injury.

Looking at the x -rays on Albert, I've
got some areas that I can't see very

well, but what I can see is the back
part of his spine, and I see really nice

squarely shaped vertebra.

So far, all good signs.

For an animal like him, as he's getting
older, basically I'm looking for

evidence of arthritis, and I'm not
seeing anything too alarming.

I think is getting diagnosed with
excessive oldness.

I think he's just finally reaching that
point that we all reach where he might

just have to take it a little bit
slower.

You know, you're not a spring chicken
anymore.

So just guide a guy.

You really got to slow it down.

Shouldn't be a problem for you. I love
Albert's chill personality.

He's a very zen animal.

He's not worried about a thing.

Today we get to find out the name of
Randy's baby.

This little guy is very ready for a
name. We've called him Randy's baby for

little over two months now.

He's getting chubbier and just precious.

And so it'll be great to finally have
his name.

So we've asked Angela to come over and
actually write the name, the chosen

on the habitat.

Right now I'm the only person that knows
what's going to be on the pole, and

then it's going to be revealed to the
priming team.

She's going to cover it up so we can't
see it, and we'll allow Randy and DeeDee

some time out by themselves, and
hopefully they will tear it down and

what the actual name is.

Very confident that Rowan's going to be
the winner.

I just have that feeling in here.

I'm ready for him to be called Ripley.

and she helped raise awareness for
orangutans to really help and understand

orangutans are so important.

We raised about $2 ,000 in this contest,
and that money will go towards

conservation to help protect wild
orangutans and their habitat and

keep them around for many, many
generations to come.
