Today we're... We're hoping to do an
ultrasound and see if we can see any

action inside.

Last year we saw some successful
copulation with Jamie and Johnny, which

amazing. This could be the one.

There's been some drama with Jamie and
Johnny. You know, is Johnny going to get

the job done? If he can't, are we going
to have to find John another home and

then bring in another male? And none of
us wanted to do that.

But we're still kind of waiting to see
for sure if she's pregnant or not.

Hello. Taking good care of my girl here?

Of course.

She's spoiled.

Jamie and Johnny are the Asian rhino
species.

We find them in northern India and
Nepal.

They have what we call a prehensile lip
that they use for grabbing leaves and

branches. Just a great animal.

So she's had three calves in the past
with a different male. This is the first

breeding we've seen between her and
Johnny.

So Dr. Lauren's coming down today, and
we're going to do an ultrasound.

She looks pregnant.

And her intake, the girl can eat as much
or more as Johnny.

She's a gentle giant.

Jamie, here with me, sister.

The animal care team is going to bring
Jamie into a chute, and I can approach

her with an ultrasound unit.

Jamie weighs about 3 ,600 pounds, so
she's a big girl.

It's completely up to Jamie whether she
participates, and we want it to be fun

for her so that she wants to come hang
out with us, she wants to do these

behaviors with us.

Angela, do you want to start rubbing

Giving her a belly scratch with a car
brush. She's really liking that.

We're going to try to do what's called a
transabdominal ultrasound on Jamie to

see if we can find a calf.

-horned rhinos have armored skin. It's
really, really thick.

And in this instance, that provides an
added challenge when you're trying to

an ultrasound.

Don't get me excited.

There's only about 3 ,500 Indian rhinos
in the wild at this present time.

I believe there might be one other
Indian rhino calf that's on the ground

in the state. And that's really not a
whole lot.

If we have a pregnancy here, this is
going to be huge.

We get Johnny's genetics out there to
support a good, healthy population.

It's just going to be really great for
greater one -horned rhinos.

I mean, I'm not seeing anything defined.

It's really difficult to see the images.

We'll go back to the hospital, and I'll
take a look and see what we can find.

They have beautiful colorations with the
females being this beautiful green

color and the males being green with
stripes.

Fiji banded iguanas are from the island
of Fiji.

They're an endangered species.

We have been highly successful in
breeding Fiji banded iguanas.

I think we've hatched out 18, so that's
quite a bit considering the whole

population in the U .S. is 59.

Our pair is so successful, we actually
have to have them stop.

They're actually going to retire, so
they're moving to another zoo in Texas.

And we'll get a brand new parent to
promote genetic diversity so we can

our success in breeding.

Time to do some checkup.

Today we'll be doing the Fiji banded
iguanas pre -shipment exam.

She's looking plump, too.

There might be a possibility that she
might be carrying.

The problem might be with the female.

During this time of the year, she might
start to think about developing some

eggs, and we don't want to be chipping
her if she's full of eggs.

No, I cannot appreciate anything
calcified, so I cannot say she has an

behavior on one of our goats named

She'll try mounting her to the point
where Merida, can't get away from her,

she'll end up going somewhere high to

When female animals, especially as they
age, start to show some what we call

masculine -like behaviors, that means
that potentially there's an imbalance in

their hormones, and that could speak to,
unfortunately, some type of growth

within the reproductive tract.

All right, cool. Let's take a look at
her. I'm ready. We're ready.

However, I'm not going to jump to that
conclusion just yet. We kind of need to

get a little bit more information first.

Amber!

It's always fun coming into the yard.
Pretty much everyone's really curious.

Hi. They want to see what good snacks

She's an older animal.

Her body condition looks pretty
appropriate.

She can be quite spunky.

Obviously, her appetite's fantastic.

Do you get the impression she's painful
at all?

No. I'm not seeing lameness. The other
thing is, you know, animals can be

irritated if they're super itchy or
painful or uncomfortable, and that can

present kind of like aggression. But I'm
actually overall just really impressed

with how she looks.

We're going to look into some other
diagnostics, whether that be imaging or

hormone assays. So we've got a couple of
things to tease out for her.

else we can do and try to keep everyone

We're transporting a flying fox from the
habitat to the clinic.

Lobo is one of our male Malayan flying
foxes.

Flying fox is a bat. We have about 30
bats total.

Lobo is a pretty sweet boy.

Lobo, out of all of our boys, is one of
the friendliest.

And so as soon as I started working with
them, I kind of fell in love with them.

So he has a lump.

Hopefully it's a benign lump.

A little while back, we noticed that
Lobo had kind of like this little bump

his lip.

And over time, we noticed that that lump
was getting a little bit larger.

And that might mean that there's
something going on.

Who's going to catch it?

So it's going to be Danny and me
primarily as catch.

Okay. And then we're going to basically
burrito him.

Don't get bit. That's super important.

He's with a large group of bats, so you
have to be careful because he will try

to bite.

I know. So I see him. He's walking away
from us.

He's right against the back wall by the
heat lamp.

They're not going to be happy.

We noticed that Lobo had kind of like
this little bump on his lip.

Goal number one would be catch it and do
what we need to do.

I have his right wing.

Lobo doesn't understand what's going on.
I would behave the same way if they're

trying to catch me.

We put a towel around him. That makes
him feel a sense of comfort.

Very nice job, guys. Beautiful.

These particular bats are from the
Pacific Islands and some parts of

I love to see them flying.

They're fruit eaters, so they go from
flower to flower, pollinizing those

flowers. Super important.

He came in as an adult cat, so he's at
least 12 years old.

It could be a papilloma, which is just a
wart.

But my biggest concern is that it's a
tumor.

All right.

You can catch him. You got him down.

The reason why they get the name flying
fox is they look very similar to kind of

like a dog or a fox.

They have a really elongated snout to
help with a better sense of smell and

of nice big eyes, that way they can look
for their food.

We're going to sedate him.

And we're going to take a closer look at
that mask.

Yeah, it's really well attached there.

It's next to his nose.

It has the look of a melanoma.

It's a dark -looking, cauliflower -type
lesion.

Melanocytes is what give the pigment of
your skin. The darker you are, the more

melanocytes you have.

Melanoma is a tumor of those type of
cells.

I'm going to poke it with a needle.

We're going to get a 5 -meter aspirate,
collect some cells that way, and I'm

sending it out to the lab so that the
pathologist can tell me, yes, it is a

melanoma. Or if this is a papilloma,
which is a benign type of tumor, and

on that report, then I can decide, do I
want to be very aggressive and remove

that tumor?

There we go. We're getting a little more
away.

If he has this, the sooner we remove
this tumor from him, the better the

prognosis. Give him some sugar.

There we go.

He doesn't want that.

Yeah. Good old sweet.

And if we are proactive with him, the
outcome can be really good. If left

untreated, the melanoma will win.

Early mornings is one of my favorite

You know, really nice and quiet around
the zoo.

And it's a really good chance to see all
the animals.

A little discomfort here and there? I

I haven't seen it yet this morning.

My first passion was aquatic animals,
dolphins, manatees.

But then as I get to work with all the
type of species, I realize that the

passion, it doesn't just lie with a
particular species.

It lies with veterinary medicine and the
care that I can provide with them here

at the zoo.

We have huge news for us.

While I didn't get a clean image of a
baby or a fetus, all the signs are

pointing to yes for her.

The fact that she hasn't cycled in such
a long time, she visibly looks rounder.

It's not too often that I move forward
with, you know, saying an animal's

pregnant unless I absolutely see an
ultrasound, but I am convinced that she

pregnant.

It's a big deal for Jamie.

It's even a bigger deal for Johnny.

Johnny hasn't sired an offspring before,
so that makes this birth incredibly

important on the genetic side of things.

Good for Johnny.

Today is Johnny's birthday.

He's turning 30, and that's a huge
number.

Their lifespan is about 40, 45, so he's
no spring chicken.

This is 30 -30.

So we have a really nice cake. We've
mixed in some alfalfa, some beet pulp,

produce, which he gets every day, and
then he also has some nice ginger just

There is an area of some tissue that has

So I think we have here, like, this is
pretty amorphous.

If it is a tumor, the correction would
be surgical.

And then I think we'll have to discuss
really kind of the next steps here.

One of the things I'd really like to do
for Amber, too, is just to get some

plain x -rays.

And in this instance, I think I could
get better images if she comes up to the

hospital.

There's something in there. We just
don't know what it is. And hopefully

get Amber up to the clinic and get x
-rays, we'll find out exactly what's

everybody. We have tigers, we have

She loves carrots, so it's a really good
tool to use during these behaviors.

We are working on voluntary blood draw
from her front leg, which would help us

monitor her hormone levels during the
pregnancy.

It'll be really beneficial for Jamie not
only for pregnancy, but the whole rest

of her life to make sure there's no
weird medical stuff going on with her.

When we do a blood draw, we're going to
do the inner front leg here. So it's

really important that she kind of

so great in the wild, so any

contribution to the global population is
really amazing and beneficial.

four meerkats.

Ralphie, Sam, Ranger, and Peabody.

They're meerkats. Long -tailed meerkats.

We have four boys and they're all
brothers.

It's definitely hard to keep track of
them. They have holes everywhere in

different tunnels throughout their
habitat.

Mealworms are definitely one of their
favorite snacks.

They don't get that every single day.

I love hanging out with the meerkats. I
think they're really underrated. We have

a lot of big animals here in Africa, but
a lot of people tend to miss them.

They're really cool. They have a lot of
personality for a small animal.

That's another sign that she might be

nothing really big inside her egg white.

I'm not finding anything really obvious.

that has already produced about 16

She's very important because she's part

We're trying to retire her and send her
to Texas so that they can continue with

her care over there, but we need to make
sure that she's not carrying more eggs.

Anything that looks like a nice dark
circle is a possible egg.

So that looks like a good one there.

Maybe there's two.

That has to be an egg.

On the ultrasound, what we ended up
finding was that she does have some

follicles, some egg development inside
her.

But if you wait too long, too late to
ship.

She's such a good, healthy female.

This all appears to be early stages of
reproductive development, so I'm feeling

comfortable to let her go.

Today we have surgery going on with
Lobo, one of our male Malayan flying

He has a mass on his lip that they're
going to be removing.

The mass on Lobo's face is right on the
very end of the right side of his lip.

Dr. Nico took a sample of that and sent
that to the lab.

Results are showing that it's consistent
with what's called a melanoma or a skin

cancer.

So now we're going to actually remove
the mask to try to prevent from any

potential spread to other organs.

Oh, crud.

The other thing that is concerning,
though, is this here.

It looks like there's another mask.

Oh, crud.

Looks like there's another path.

The little thing on his chin? Yeah.

There's a bump on his chin here that
we'll take a look at that as well.

I'm going to take an aspirate of that.

We're going to take a small sample of it
with a needle and syringe and send it

to the lab and make sure that there's
not anything that we need to worry about

with that.

Well, that's inflated.

A pimple? Yeah.

The aspirate that I took I think is a
cyst because it deflated as soon as I

out the material, but we'll still send
it to the lab just to make sure.

So the biopsy results did come back as a
malignant melanoma. Okay.

This is a melanoma vaccine. Melanoma
vaccine. It's the same vaccine that we

dogs. Got it.

We're going to do this new vaccine that
has not been tried on a bat, but it has

been tried in other species and has been
very successful, so I'm really excited.

I know, bud. Perfect. Good job. That's

An oncologist from one of the local
referral places here decided to donate

time and help us out with the vaccine.

Yeah, because we just basically are
going to, it's going to go into muscle.

For the birthing, we don't do anything
for Jamie other than supply a nice safe

space for her that's really heavily
bedded.

Jamie has done this three times before.

Jamie does all the work, and we're just
on standby, ready to help if we need to.

Within the first hour after birth, we're
expecting the baby to be on their feet.

It's always funny watching them stand up
for the first time. It's really wobbly.

Then they hobble around for a little bit
with a couple of falls here and there.

They're just designed to get up and to
know what to do.

The baby was standing within the first
10 minutes or so, and nursing with under

an hour.
