the inside of a luggage pallet.

This is an intact luggage pallet,

where passenger baggage is held.

On a commercial flight, such as PA103,

there are usually about 26 of them.

The discovery of these pallet parts...

..suggests strongly

that a bomb...

..was inside one of them

and, therefore, most likely
inside a piece of luggage.

Does this mean the bomber
was a passenger?

That's the current
focus of enquiries, yes.

It's been reported that,
on December 5th,

an anonymous call to the
US Embassy in Helsinki

warned that a bomb would
be put on a Pan Am flight.

Why weren't the public warned?

My current understanding

is that there are a number
of these kind of warnings,

but it's not always clear
which ones to take seriously.

Could the bomb have been
in Khaled Jaafar's luggage?

Not prepared to talk about
individual passengers at the moment.

But you are aware that the FBI has
just questioned Jaafar's father?

I'm sure the FBI will be interviewing

a great many of the victims' families.

in the early stages,

we've began to focus on
one potential suspect -

Khalid Jaafar, a young
American-Lebanese passenger

who, we have been informed,

was involved in some suspicious
activities in the Middle East.

We've recovered one of his bags,
but we know that he checked in two,

so the current theory
is that the second bag

may have contained the bomb.

AAIB believe that they've found
the site of the explosion.

And this has been verified the
findings of RARDE. Is that correct?

We examined the metal of the pallet

and found residue consistent
with explosive contact with an IED.

So, we can now confirm that this is
the pallet that contained the bomb?

- So, what does this tell us?

The pallets mainly contained
luggage solely from Heathrow.

This pallet also contained luggage
from a connecting Frankfurt flight.

But the pallet contained
lots of luggage.

You can't know the bomb
got through at Frankfurt.

And that's why we have requested the
luggage list from Frankfurt Airport.

Several times.

But you have the Pan Am manifests
for both flights, correct?

That should tell you all you
need to know about the luggage.

With all due respect, no, it doesn't.

The Pan Am luggage list lacks detail.

The Frankfurt list
would show the exact origin

of every bag loaded
at Frankfurt Airport.
