The exact latitude
and longitude of the spot
is known,

but the problem is,
it's not a crash site.

They were over
a mountain range with peaks
as high as 11,000 feet.

Mountains blocked ground-based
radar from reading anything
below 14,000.

The center
had radio contact.

And William and I
had telephone contact
several minutes

beyond the last radar blip.

Based on the capabilities
of the aircraft,

the last recorded data
at the exact length of time

between the radar
losing them

and my phone contact
getting cut off,

the crash site
could be anywhere...

within those circles.

Well, doesn't a plane like that
have some sort of black box

or something that will
send out a distress signal?

It's got an ELT, an emergency
locator transmitter.

For the same reason that
the radar can't get in,

the ELT signal
probably can't get out.

If the plane had got down
between two peaks,

then the signal's
just gonna go straight up,
and the only thing

that's gonna be
able to pick it up is
another aircraft.

And they can't start
an aerial search until
the weather clears.

And by then,
three to four feet of
new snow will have fallen,

and any sign of the wreckage
will be buried.

So, if for some reason,
the ELT signal
can't be picked up,

and Sloan or one of
the other crew members can't

light some kind of
signal fire,

we may not
find them till spring.
