[thunder rumbling]
I'm sure we can fleece these guys at poker.
[chuckles] I don't think that's what Margaret had in mind
when she invited us over.
Ladies, gentlemen, welcome.
I'm Margaret Davis and this is my sister, Laura.
[Margaret] We are here tonight,
to make contact with those loved ones
that have passed over. Please, join hands.
Don't break the circle under any circumstances.
[thunder rumbling]
[eerie moaning]
[Margaret] My sister is trying to contact her spirit guide.
[gasping]
[Margaret] What is it, Laura? What's wrong?
[Laura continues gasping]
Laura? What's wrong? Laura!
[continues gasping]
[grunts]
[screaming]
-[Margaret] Laura! -No, keep the circle!
[grunting]
You must hold on to the spirit.
[Laura panting]
Well, we certainly haven't met. I'm Elizabeth.
What happened to Laura?
She's gone away for a while. What's your name?
Uh, I'm Nick Boyle.
[laughs] Loosen up, Nick. Your hand's colder than mine.
And, why did you come? And, why now?
Maybe, I'm here for you.
Or for you. Or for you.
Or for you, Nick.
Or maybe, I've come for someone else.
[thunder crashes]
See you later, alligator.
[gasping]
[Nick] Are you feeling better?
Better.
This was the third time Laura's passed out during a seance
since we moved here.
Each one's been worse.
But this is the first time the entity
has identified herself by name.
Elizabeth.
Laura almost never passes out during contact.
The few times it's happened,
it's been from sheer exhaustion after a long session.
That's why we called you.
Do you remember anything about the seance?
No. I never remember.
When did you learn to sign?
When I heard you were coming back.
I thought I'd give it a try.
Pretty bad. Still a little raw. [chuckles]
That was good.
Except at the end, you said you were still a little cow.
[all chuckle]
So, why did the two of you
decide to move back to San Francisco?
Well, after father died,
there was no reason for us to stay in New York.
So, we thought we'd come back to the Bay Area.
And while we were looking for a place,
Laura fell in love with this house.
She knew we had to live here.
I think what I felt was,
Elizabeth needed to be reconnected to this house.
She's in a lot of pain.
Well, I would strongly suggest
not conducting any more seances for the time being,
until we know more about this Elizabeth.
Laura, would you do this for me?
Yes, of course.
All right.
[Rachel] How is it that you know the Davis family?
Matthew Davis was a member of the New York house for years.
He worked both, with my father and Nick's before he died.
I've seen cases where
the death of the surviving parent can be so traumatic,
that it triggers a repressed part of the personality,
and that could be the explanation for Laura's aggressiveness.
Do you think that Laura's not channeling anybody,
that she's causing these disturbances herself?
No. That wouldn't explain the vision I had at all.
It's clearly a disturbed force invading Laura's body.
I want a history of that house.
Search for any first names like "Elizabeth" or "Liz".
Anything close.
And, Nick, take the lead on this one.
Try to find out as much as you can from Laura
about her previous contacts with this entity.
She needs all our help for now.
[soft music playing]
[Laura] It's a beautiful place.
Are you sure you don't want any of this?
[Laura] No, thank you.
It's nice to see you again.
Ah, you, too.
So, have you had any more visitations
since the other night?
No?
When was it that you started channeling?
You were around five or something, right?
Right after I lost my hearing, the gift came to me.
At first, it was kind of scary,
but then, it was almost a relief.
A new place to go, and not feel so alone.
Do you remember our first seance?
We were nine,
and you wanted to contact Babe Ruth [laughs]
to help with your hitting.
I was in a bit of a slump and the team needed me, right?
Tell me what you've been up to.
I see you followed in your father's footsteps.
Uh, I guess.
Yeah, I joined the club.
I don't like to call it my father's footsteps,
even if it is true.
I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable.
No, it's not you.
I haven't been out with anyone in a long time.
Yeah, I haven't, either.
I guess this isn't that much of a date, as business.
A case.
Well, I don't take everybody
that I do business with, out for dinner.
This is a special occasion, right?
[soft gasp]
Mmm.
It's special for me, too, Nick.
Elizabeth?
Mmm.
[seductively] This is good, Nick. You want me, don't you?
Laura?
You know what just happened?
No.
Are you okay?
Nick...
[breathing heavily] I'm allergic to seafood.
The Pier 22's a nice spot.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to eat anything
with what happened with Laura.
So, she ate the shrimp after you heard Elizabeth's voice?
Yeah.
Then it was Elizabeth who did that.
What, you think she's trying to kill her?
This doesn't really make sense, does it?
She needs Laura to manifest herself.
Evening.
[whining]
What's the matter, boy? It's all right.
[ghostly voice] Harry.
Who is that?
-Harry. -[whining]
It's all right. Who's there?
Harry.
[barking]
It's me. Lizzy.
Lizzy?
I don't know any...
What? Lizzy?
How can that be?
Ah.
So, you do remember. I'm touched.
See you later, alligator.

[Alex] Elizabeth Caldwell,
vivacious young wife of Benjamin Caldwell, a prominent banker,
committed suicide by hanging herself
in the parlor of that house on May 23rd, 1946.
No note was found,
and the cause of her distress was unknown.

the up-from-the-streets former chorus girl and entertainer

The death caused quite a scandal.

The police asked me if I, or any of Harry's friends,
which comes down to you and me
at this late stage of the game,

Harry said that name?
Now, don't worry yourself.
In any event,
I said the name meant nothing to me.

[neck cracks]

[Derek] So, let's review what we know so far.
Initially, Elizabeth could only
make contact with Laura during a seance,
when she was most open and vulnerable. Hmm?
But the other night at dinner,
Elizabeth just waltzed right in.
Well, now, that the channel of contact has been opened,
it's going to be very difficult for Laura to close it back off.
There have been dozens of cases down through history
where spirits have invaded the bodies of innocents,
and with each successive possession,
the host's body begins to progressively weaken.
We don't know how many times
Laura can successfully fight Elizabeth off before...
Well, if she's possessed again,
Laura might be lost to us forever.
Are you seeing Laura today?
Yeah. Yeah, I'll keep an eye on her.
All right. Well, in the meantime,
we have to find out as much as we can about Elizabeth
and the circumstances surrounding her death.
So, if you two would please go to the police station,
and pull up the coroner's inquest
and look at all the files of the case?
We have to find out why her soul is so restless
and what she's doing back here.
Thanks for lunch, Nick. It was wonderful.
My pleasure. Hank's finest.
Maybe we should have had hamburgers the other night.
The other night was memorable, to say the least.
[both chuckle]
Has Elizabeth been back since then?
No. But I'm worried about her.
Why?
I know she's in trouble.
I can feel it.
She's in such great pain.
Something about her suicide.
Well, Alex and Rachel
are looking into the details of her death
at the Marina police station.
And if they can scare anything up,
then we'll be the first to know.
That's not enough. Why hasn't she contacted me again?
I want to help her.
I don't think inviting her in is a good idea.
She's dangerous.
She's not dangerous, Nick.
She feels sad.
You have to trust me.
Be strong, don't let her back in.
I understand.
But when Elizabeth wants to go through me,
I can't stop her. I need help.
That's why I'm here.

-Thank you. -Happy hunting. Excuse me.
And, uh, if you need me, scream.
[both chuckle]
Thank you.
-Wow. What a great room. -I know.
I wonder if Elizabeth spent much time here.
You're not sensing her now, are you?
-No. -Good.
I don't feel her presence until she makes direct contact.
What is she like, Nick?
I know she's troubled, but is she nice?
I suppose if she were a living,
breathing human being,
I might have a cup of coffee with her.
-[Nick chuckles] -Oh...
So, you like her?
Well, let's just say that I like the body that she comes in,
but I don't know whether I like what she's doing to you.
You know what I mean?
[Laura gasping]
[spoon clinking]
Hello, Nick.
Elizabeth. Funny, we were just talking about you.
How flattering.
Why are you doing this?
I've got a little unfinished business to attend to.
So, why Laura?
Because she pulled me through the veil.
And she's young and pretty.
You think she's pretty, don't you, Nick?
I think you should leave her alone.
It's been a long time since I've been with a man.
You can imagine.
Okay, that's enough.
Look, you don't belong here, and Laura doesn't deserve this.
This isn't about Laura, Nick, this is about us.
Laura, push her out of your body.
Laura, you have to fight.
Fight, Laura.
Fight, Laura, fight.
[breathing heavily]

-Was Elizabeth here? -Yeah.

Maybe I should bunk here tonight.
Just in case.
I could sleep on the floor.
-That would be great. -Perfect.

Laura?
[shuddering]
[exhales]
Oh, my God.
It's okay. I won't let her hurt you.
[indistinct chatter]
What have we got so far?
Well, let's see. Okay.
The night before she died,
Elizabeth Caldwell was last seen with her husband, Benjamin,
at this private, members-only Drake Club.
Well, the next morning,
Benjamin found Elizabeth's body in the parlor,
dead, with a rope tied around her neck.
Let's have a look.
The forensics back then were pretty shoddy, but...
Okay, the police cut her down.
Her neck was definitely broken,
but they can't establish a time of death.
No, there's no evidence of foul play.
Well, the coroner's office listed it as a suicide.
Sad.
[Alex] Now, according to this crime report,
this record was found on the phonograph
when they discovered Elizabeth's body.

was started by Elizabeth?
Oh, definitely.
For some reason, she doesn't want us to know what really happened.
Maybe, she's afraid if we find out,
that we'll try and stop her.

All the police documents and support materials indicate suicide,

[Alex] Okay, this photo was taken at the Drake Club

I found an old autopsy X-ray
stuck to the back of one of these reports.
Does it substantiate the coroner's report?
Not exactly, no.
Wait, you mean Elizabeth didn't die of a broken neck?
Her neck was broken, all right,
it just wasn't broken in a way that's consistent with hanging.
You see, hanging stretches the vertebrae,
and then causes the neck to snap.
In this case, it appears
the vertebrae were crushed and then snapped.
[Alex] So, it looks like her neck was broken
before she supposedly committed suicide.
You think she was killed and set up by her husband and the others?
Yeah, that will be my guess.
