[thunder rumbling]
[Sara] Should we be doing this?
[Bobby] Come on, are you kidding?
This is gonna be great.
Welcome to the Devil's Lighthouse.
-[thunder rumbling] -[wind howling]
Bobby, I really don't think I wanna do this.
Come on, Sara, where's your sense of adventure?
Oh, man, look at this place. What a dump.
Wow. Check out that stove.
Jeez, it must be as old as my grandmother.
Wonder if it still works.
[gasps] Bobby, don't.
[lighter clicks]
[chuckles]
That wasn't funny.
Yeah, it was.
Come on.
[chuckles nervously] You're not gonna go up there,
-are you? -I'm not gonna go alone.
Oh, we shouldn't.
That's why we should. Come on.
Bobby, I'm scared. I don't wanna be here.
Okay, okay, okay...
What if these stairs aren't safe?
This place is probably 100 years old.
It was built to last. It's not gonna fall down tonight.
Wow.
Gosh, I never realized how beautiful it was up here.
How far do you think they could see the light from?
Twenty-five miles on a clear night.
When was the last time it went on?
I don't know.
They shut this place down about 50 years ago.
It hasn't worked since.
Hey, Sara, can I tell you something...
and promise you won't laugh?
Sure.
I, uh, I really like you a lot.
Okay, I'll just say it. I love you.
[thunder rumbling]
[light stops rotating]
Bobby, what was that noise?
[Bobby] I don't know.
-The light, the light. -What?
-Bobby, something's going on? Something's wrong. -[Bobby screams]
-Help me! -What's happening?
Sara! Sara!
-Bobby! -Help me!
[Sara] No!
I can't see you! No!
Oh, my God!
[screaming]
Bobby!
Bobby!
[crying] No!
Bobby...
Where are you, Bobby?
Damn you, Noah.
[thunder rumbling]
[Derek] I found this in their local newspaper.
"Bobby Warner, 16 years old,
went missing from an abandon lighthouse three nights ago.
His girlfriend, Sara Kincaid,
was with him when he disappeared,
and is now blind as a result of whatever happened."
-Blind? -Yeah.
-Any other injuries? -No.
Her doctors couldn't find any organic damage to her eyes.
Hysterical blindness.
It's a very rare disorder.
A psychosomatic by-product of a trauma,
usually lasts just a short time.
All right. Well, I'd like you to examine her, Rachel.
Sure.
[Derek] And if necessary,
we'll move her to San Francisco for further treatment.
Where is this lighthouse?
Point Clifton.
It's a small town just up the coast.
We'll head up tomorrow morning.
I know the place.
A guy from my old SEAL unit runs a boat shop up there.
Oh, well, great. Find him and, uh, maybe he can help us.
Yeah, you guys could get together and swap old war stories.
[chuckles]
I don't think so.
Uh, are you sure this is a case for us, Derek?
Well, the locals have a name
for the place where Bobby disappeared.
They call it "The Devil's Lighthouse."
That's all I needed to hear.
-See you. -Yeah.
[Rachel] See you in the morning.
So, what's up with you and this Navy friend?
You don't seem too excited about seeing him.
He's hardly what I'd call a friend.
Hmm.
You guys were in the SEALs together though, right?
Yeah, until he washed out.
Well, a lot of guys wash out.
Yeah.
Excuse me.
I'm looking for a guy named Mike McCready.
He runs a boat shop around here.
I'll be damned.
[grunts]
If it ain't Nick Boyle, all-American point man.
It's been a while.
Long enough you didn't recognize me.
I mean, people change, huh? [sniffs]
How you been?
Not bad. You?
Yeah, on top of my game, brother, can't you tell?
[smacks lips]
-You looking to rent a boat? -I might.
-Hmm. -I hear that lighthouse is worth seeing.
It's spooky. It's haunted.
If you're with the tabloids,
I got some stories about that place.
But I'm not cheap, it'll cost you.
-You want a beer? -No, thanks.
So, you know anything about it?
[Mike] Well, it's been closed for almost 50 years. It's derelict.
But I tell you, I've seen that light going on and off.
I've been telling them that all along.
But who's gonna listen to a bum
with a dishonorable discharge
from the United States Navy, right, Boyle?
Right?
Right.
[kettle whistling]
It must be hard losing a son.
I'd really like to help you get him back.
I'll take all the help I can get. Any at all.
The police have told me to sit tight, whatever that means.
They still think Bobby's just run away from home.
And you're sure he hasn't?
I know my son, Miss Moreau. Bobby would never do that.
He calls even if he's gonna be home late.
I told him never ever go out to that damn lighthouse.
[crying] Someone should just burn it down.
Bobby's all I've got in the world.
He's all I care about.
And I know he's alive. I feel it.
Do you think that's crazy?
No. No, I don't.
And I promise you,
we're gonna do everything we can to get your son back.
I'm sorry, I'm not being much help to you, am I?
Maybe there is something that you can do.
I need to know the history of the lighthouse.
Any information that you can get.
Do you think you could do that for me?
I can try.
That'd be great.
[doorbell rings]
-[Rachel] Hi. -Hi, I'm Jim Kincaid.
-You must be Dr. Corrigan. -That's right.
Dr. Rayne.
-How are you? -I'm fine, thank you.
-Does Sara know we're coming? -[Jim] Yes.
Uh, her doctor gave her a sedative,
so if she seems kind of out of it...
I understand. How is she doing today?
Um, same. No change.
-Come in. -Thanks.
Sara, honey.
These are the doctors I was telling you about.
[Derek] Good morning, Sara.
Hi, Sara. My name is Rachel.
I'm just gonna sit down here with you for a minute, okay?
Here we go.
I'd like to...
talk about what happened to Bobby?
No one has seen him since the other night.
He's gone. Bobby's gone.
Okay. Let's, uh... Come on.
Okay, okay.
That's just me. That's just my hand. Oh! Your hands are so cold.
It's okay, honey. You don't have to be scared.
Can you tell me where Bobby went?
-Did he just run away, or-- -[Sara sobs]
The light.
He went into the light.
Sara, what do you mean, "he went into the light"?
[Sara shudders]
Why doesn't anybody understand me?
He got sucked into the light.
All right. It's a straight shot
right across the bay from here. It's pretty easy.
Hey, you want me to go with you?
I think we can handle it.
Oh, that's right.
That's right. Nick Boyle doesn't need backup.
You've heard stories about the lighthouse?
Mmm-hmm. The Devil's Lighthouse.
It's supposed to be closed up,
but, you know, I have seen that light going on and off.
It's weird.
I don't normally encourage people to go out there, I mean...
-All right. We're ready. -Okay, let's go.
-Thanks. -[Mike] Mmm-hmm.
All right, you guys got the boat till 6:00.
But if you're late,
I get to have dinner with Alex here.
[chuckles] Great. Tell you what.
Why don't we all have dinner?
-Our treat, huh? -You say when, I'll be there.
Okay.
[boat engine starts]
It's beautiful, isn't it?
Quite a work of art in its own way.
-Yeah, they sure don't build them like this anymore. -[camera clicks]
[Nick] They don't need them like this anymore.
Radar has pretty much put the old lighthouse out of commission.
-Hmm. -[device beeping]
Seems remarkably well-preserved.
It's almost as if it's being maintained somehow.
Nobody comes out here anymore, do they?
Well, that's true, but we shouldn't exclude the possibility
that something or someone is still here, should we?
Well, whatever it was,
it was traumatic enough to blind Sara Kincaid.
Well, I hate to be the purveyor of doom,
but it's possible the kid went over the rail and out to sea.
Well, I'm gonna go downstairs and take some more pictures.
All right, be careful.
[device beeping rapidly]
[camera clicks]
[rapid beeping]
Derek.
What is it?
I swear to God, it's that kid calling his girlfriend.
[Bobby echoing] Sara.
[distant, eerie shouting]
-[man] You're going to pay, Wilkes. -[Alex gasps]
[man]Wilkes, you're gonna fall. We're coming to get you.
-[Alex gasping] -[man shouting]
[rope creaking]
[choking] Elizabeth.
[gasps]
Sara, I know this is really hard for you, honey,
but it's so important that you keep talking.
You gotta keep talking to us,
so that we can help you, and we can help find Bobby.
[thunder rumbling]
Sara, my friend Alex
went out to the lighthouse today,
and she saw some strange things.
She wants to talk to you about them, okay?
Sara.
I saw a man when I was out there.
Did you and Bobby see him, too?
[stammering] He took Bobby.
Where? Where did he take him?
Into the light. That's where Bobby is.
If somebody doesn't help him, he's gonna die.
Please, someone save him.
-[crying] Please, someone... -Okay, okay.
All right, honey. It's all right.
We're gonna find him. It's gonna be all right.
We'll go back out there, after dark.
I'd like to be out there
in the same conditions at the same time Bobby disappeared.
What do you think happened to him?
Well, he's there. He's trapped in that lighthouse somewhere.
Nick and I heard him.
As long as we can hear his voice,
we can bring him back, I know we can.
When we cannot hear him anymore, he's gone forever.
-Hmm. -[thunder rumbling]
[Joan] I went to the library.
This is everything I could find.
Great.
Maybe there's something in here that may help us.
I hope so.
The police called me back last night.
They said they still have nothing new.
I'm sorry.
You went out there. What did you find?
Oh, unfortunately, we didn't find Bobby,
but I feel the same way you do.
I think he's still alive.
Well, here's something.
It says here that a ship sank 47 years ago off the Point.
The lighthouse keeper, Noah Wilkes,
was lynched by an angry mob.
Huh.
The captain, Daniel Baker,
went down with his ship.
The survivors claim that they never saw the light go on,
as if no one was working the lighthouse.
Oh, that's so sad.
I wonder if that's what drove Elizabeth Baker
to cut herself off from everybody in town.
The captain's widow, Elizabeth Baker, she's very old now.
She's been a recluse ever since her husband's death.
People say she's a little... odd,
if you know what I mean.
Where does she live?
She lives alone in a shack on the cliffs near the lighthouse.
Maybe she saw something.
Do you think she knows something about Bobby?
Mrs. Warner, if there's anything
I've learned about working on cases like these,
it's that answers turn up in the most unlikely places.
Mrs. Baker?
Hello?
Anybody home?
What are you doing in my house?
I'm sorry. I knocked,
-but I guess-- -Get out.
Mrs. Baker, my name is Alex Moreau.
How the hell do you know my name?
Mrs. Baker, I'd like to talk to you about the lighthouse.
I'll thank you to get out of here.
Okay, listen. I'm gonna give you my card.
If you change your mind, you can reach me there.
I said get out.
That girl's cursed now.
And that boy is as good as dead.
And you go out to that lighthouse
and you will die, too.
Mark my words.
[Rachel] She's even less responsive to visual stimuli.
Her condition is degrading.
I think we should move her to a hospital.
I know a specialist who might be able to help.
All right. Well, talk to her father, make arrangements,
and I'll call and have a helicopter sent up.
And assure him that the Luna Foundation will bear the cost.
Great. So, I'll take Sara and her dad to the house tonight.
Tomorrow, first thing, we'll go to the hospital and start therapy.
Yeah. We're going out, back to the lighthouse tonight,
-probably be there till dawn. -[thunder rumbling]
Derek, do you really think that this lighthouse is somehow inhabited?
Oh, I'm convinced Bobby is still there. He's inside this place.
You're starting to sound like
the story of Jonah and the Whale.
Yeah. Well, I hope so, for the boy's sake.
Jonah escaped from the whale, remember?
-Yeah. -[door opens]
Mrs. Baker, are you home?
My name is Joan Warner.
My son disappeared at the lighthouse.
Are you in there? Please, I need to talk to you.
[knocking loudly]
Damn it, Mrs. Baker, answer me.
No...
Noah, what have you done?
[sobbing]
[soft music playing]
[indistinct chatter]
Well...
It was a nice try, but I don't think he's gonna show.
Oh, he'll show.
So, just out of curiosity, what happened between you two?
We grew up together.
Navy brats.
Basic training together, made it to SEALs together,
we were really quite tight once.
We had a little falling out.
And... [exhales]
Yeah.
Screw it. It's a long story.
I'd like to hear it.
Nick doesn't seem to wanna talk about it.
All right.
We were tasked for a mission.
Black op, covert situation.
Hostage extraction.
Basically, it didn't go off like we planned.
Everybody didn't make it out alive. So...
You like your drink, don't you?
It is a special occasion.
It is Tuesday, right?
[laughs]
Besides, how often does a deadbeat like me
get to have dinner with a beautiful woman like you?
Anyway...
There was an inquest and I was cleared of any misconduct.
We all were.
But I think Nick still kind of blames me for some reason.
Why don't you tell her what really happened, Michael?
I got a little hung up.
You do mean a little hungover, don't you?
You were three steps behind, everybody was counting on you.
You were always so goddamned irresponsible.
You know, you're talking to me like I'm a criminal or something.
You do remember I wasn't convicted of anything, don't you?
We were partners, man.
How much would it have hurt you
to cover me once in a while like I covered you?
It was combat, not high school. You let the team down.
-Why don't you cut me some slack? -Yeah, that's right, Mikey.
Have another cocktail 'cause I don't think
you feel sorry enough for yourself yet.
You know what your problem is, Nick?
-No, but why don't you tell me? -You've never been the GOAT.
Not once.
You can't identify it.
Sorry, Alex.
You gotta be partnered with this guy.
It must be pretty brutal
trying to be absolutely perfect all the time.
[Bobby echoing] Mom.
Bobby? Bobby!
[Bobby] Mom.
Please. I don't know where I am, Mom.
I don't know what's happening to me.
[car door opens]
[exhales]
Well, he drinks a lot, doesn't he?
Always did. Still does.
Hmm.
So, what now?
[inhales]
Well, I'll hook up with Derek and go back to the lighthouse.
No, I mean between you and McCready.
There is no "what now" between me and McCready.
Well, maybe your expectations are too high.
You know what, I really don't wanna talk about this.
I rather drop it.
Well, that would certainly be
the easiest way to deal with it, wouldn't it?
I think Michael McCready has a point.
Okay, you and I are partners, right?
Are you gonna drop out of my life as quickly when I screw up?
Look, you've known Michael since this morning.
I've known him my whole life.
It's not my job to save him from himself.
I know there's bad history between you guys,
but there's good history, too.
You and Michael grew up together. You were kids together.
He's your last connection to who you used to be.
I think that's worth salvaging.
[car engine starts]
Bobby?
Bobby?
Bobby... Bobby, I'm coming.
Hang on, Bobby.
I'm coming.
[gasps]
Who are you?
I'm the lighthouse keeper.
There's no lighthouse keeper anymore.
Who are you, and what the hell have you done with my son?
I've taken him.
Give him back to me, now!
It's too late. I can't do that.
But you'll be with him soon enough.
[screaming]
[Joan] What are you doing? Please!
No!
No!
[Joan screaming]
[Mike humming]
Oh, what, are you coming to tuck me in now?
You're pathetic, man. Look at yourself.
Thank you, Mother Teresa.
I'll take that under advisement.
[phone ringing]
Hello?
It's happening again.
He's taken that woman.
-Joan Warner. -Who is this?
We're not finished.
All right, I screwed up.
I went out the night before and partied
instead of getting all mentally prepared.
How did I know it wasn't gonna be
my last night on the planet Earth?
I'm sorry, I'm human. I screwed it up.
Mike, anybody that I got any history with is in the ground.
I don't want to see you drink yourself there.
Joan Warner's in trouble.
Look, the lighthouse, I told you.
We've got to get out there now.
-Call Derek. -I'm going with you.
No, you're not. Stay here, and make sure Derek gets a boat.
[Joan] Help.
Please, help.
Somebody, please help me!
[door creaks open]
[Elizabeth] Noah?
Noah Wilkes?
You got what you wanted.
I'm here.
You're here.
I know that you are.
Noah?
It's you, isn't it?
Elizabeth.
I've been waiting for you.
All these years,
you haven't come to see me. Why?
What do you want, Noah?
What I've always wanted, you.
We were wrong, Noah.
My husband was a good man,
I should never have betrayed him.
That's all in the past.
No.
No, Elizabeth, it's never been over.
And it never will be,
not as long as I keep watch over this lighthouse.
Until you're with me forever.
No.
Let go, Noah. Let me go.
Daniel's death was an accident.
"Accident"?
Elizabeth, you know it was no accident.
I sent your husband to his death because I loved you.
[gasps]
[Noah] Because you wanted me to, didn't you?
[whimpers]
You can't even admit the truth to yourself,
can you, Elizabeth?
[gasps]
[both breathing heavily]
[thunder rumbling]
[Noah]You knew that I turned off the light that night.
And I paid the price of your love with my own life.
No.
And you've always known, haven't you, Elizabeth?
Joan?
Joan, are you up there?
Now...
you pay.
Stay with me, Elizabeth.
Stay, or I'll keep whoever else comes here.
[Alex] Mrs. Baker?
Do you want their blood on your hands, too?
Is that what you want?
[Alex] Mrs. Baker.
You're Noah Wilkes, aren't you?
Yes, and this is my lighthouse. Get out!
You're dead, Noah.
You don't belong here anymore. This lighthouse is dead.
Oh, you are so wrong.
Alex?
This lighthouse is still very much alive.
No!
-[Alex] Get out of here. -No!
Run!
Go!
[gasping]
No!
[screaming]
[grunting]
[Alex screaming]
[thunder rumbling]
Alex?
-Alex? -[Elizabeth sobs] No.
No, Noah, I didn't do it.
I did not do it. It's not my fault.
It's okay. You're Mrs. Baker, right?
-I'm not a murderer. -Nobody thinks you are.
He did it. He's the murderer.
He murdered my husband and all those other people.
Who? Who are you talking about?
Noah Wilkes. He's up there.
-He's always been up there. -Okay.
-[Elizabeth crying] -Okay. Mrs. Baker,
you have to listen to me very carefully, all right?
I came here with a friend. Do you know what happened to her?
She went into the light.
He took her into the light. [sobbing]
All right, Mrs. Baker, please stay here.
I'll be right back.
Oh, God, no.
Alex!
[Derek] Nick, I got here as quickly as I could.
[Nick] I left Mrs. Baker in here, she wouldn't leave.
[Derek] Where is Alex?
-[Nick] She's gone. -What do you mean, "she's gone"?
I never should have left her.
I saw the light go on.
That's what I've been telling everybody.
I've looked inside and out. I...
She's nowhere to be found.
Don't go up there.
He'll trap you and never let you go.
Who are you talking about?
Noah. Noah Wilkes.
The lighthouse keeper.
[crying]
And now, your friend,
he's taken your friend into the light.
And that boy last week, and
a lot of other people, too,
and I saw them go and I never...
[sobs]
I never told anybody.
He'll never let her go.
He never lets anybody go.
Tonight, he will.
[Noah]You're mine, Elizabeth, always.
Alex.
Where are you?
[Alex echoing] Derek? I'm here.
In the light, Derek. In the light...
Wilkes.
Wilkes, it's over. Let those people go.
I can't do that.
They're with me now, forever.
No, they're not, they don't belong to you.
They will be with me forever.
They're all part of my lighthouse now.
Not anymore, they're not. Nobody owes you anything.
It's over, Wilkes. It's over.
Before this night is through, you will all be dead with me.
[grunting]
Forever!
No!
[bullet ricochets]
[Noah screaming]
No!
It's over.
Finally, it's over.
Rest in peace, Noah Wilkes.
[peacocks screeching]
Sara.
Sara, honey, wake up.
That's a girl.
You've got a visitor.
Hey, Sara.
It's me.
[gasps]
[stammers] Yes, I know.
I can see.
-I missed you. -Me, too.
[Mike] Would you believe what happened here last night?
I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it myself.
It did happen, right?
[Nick] Yeah, it happened.
[Mike] Well, nobody's gonna believe me when I tell them about this,
just like when I tried to tell them about the lighthouse.
Same as it ever was.
In case you didn't notice,
I got a bad rep around town for being a bit of a drinker.
Is that right?
People tend not to pay
too much attention to me a lot of the time,
because I'm loaded a lot of the time.
[Mike sighs]
But I wanna tell you something.
About what we were talking about before,
what happened with us in the past.
You were right.
I let you down.
I'm sorry.
Forget it.
I don't know what happened to me.
You know, I used to be one of the elite, too.
And...
now this.
And I'm just going deeper.
It doesn't have to be that way.
Not if you don't want it to be.
Come on, let's go, bud.
[Alex]They called it "The Devil's Lighthouse."
It was built as a beacon, but it became a prison.
A prison made of jealousy and undying rage.
Instead of saving lives, it took them.
Instead of light,
it offered only the darkness of one man's lost soul.
He's finally at rest,
and the light is out now, forever.
