[phone ringing]

-Yes. -[man]Sir, we have a delivery out here.

What, at this time of night?

I'm afraid so, it's a big crate.

Does he have the proper credentials?

Yes, it's from Night Owl Express.

All right, then. Send him up to the front door.

[doorbell ringing]

Coming.

[continues ringing]

Coming.

Night Owl delivery.

Where do you want this thing?

Um... Put it down over here, please.

[grunting]

Man, you have some security out here.

What is this place? Fort Knox?

Not quite.

Hey. Sign at the bottom there, would you?

Yeah, I got the ferry boat guy waiting for me.

So, kind of in a hurry.

You know what I mean, Jeeves.

The name is not "Jeeves."

Do you mind?

Thank you.

[groans]

[creature chittering]

[screams]

[yells]

[creature exclaims]

Frederick.

Frederick, what happened?

I fell.

What's this?

Just delivered for Mr. Sloan. Oh!

Let Rachel have a look at this cut.

[all chittering]

[theme music playing]

[Derek] The box was sent here addressed to William Sloan.

For me?

Yes. We contacted the delivery company.

It was sent yesterday from Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The sender's name was false, so was the return address.

And the fee was paid in cash.

Did they have a description of who brought it to them?

No. Actually, to add to the mystery,

the guy who booked it in can't be found.

He's been missing since he clocked out.

That's a little unsettling.

Yes. It is.

Who knew that you were scheduled to come here

and didn't know you had canceled?

No one should have.

Especially outside The Legacy.

My itinerary, as always, was confidential.

Could be coincidental, but...

Well, who knows, maybe the sender may have assumed

that we would forward it to you.

But that still doesn't explain the false name and address.

Or the missing clerk, does it?

No.

I am rather curious to know what's inside.

So am I.

Okay, you have my permission to take a look, Derek,

but do me a favor, be careful.

Don't open it till you made a thorough examination.

You know me better than that.

Come on, Derek, you know I had to say that.

You do have a tendency to be a little impulsive sometimes.

Me?

Yes, you.

Hmm. Well, other than a slight crack here,

that appears to have happened recently,

possibly during shipment or when Frederick tripped,

the integrity of the box is substantial.

There is no disturbance in the auric field,

no internal heat source,

no magnetic aberrations on the piezo scan.

There's basically no indication of supernatural presence.

And there's no wires, no electronics, no explosives.

I mean, it's just what it looks like. It's a box.

All right. Let's shut it down.

No occult signs or markings.

-How's he doing? -He's fine.

It's just a cut and a few bruises. I told him to rest.

But, of course, you know Frederick, he's got to clean up first.

[imitating Frederick] But, of course.

So this old box is in pretty good shape considering...

How old do you think it is?

Six, seven hundred years, my guess.

Nick is going to try affixing a more accurate date.

So why don't we open it up?

Has anyone ever called you "impulsive"?

Only you, Derek.

All right.

All right.

[creature squealing]

[spraying]

All right, this isn't happening.

Why don't I just get a cutting torch and get this over with?

Do it.

[light switch clicks repeatedly]

[footsteps descending]

[creature chittering]

[exclaiming]

Hey.

Watch out.

Not exactly buried treasure.

It's more like garage sale rejects here.

Wait a second.

Cool.

Bagpipes.

Do you play?

Well, doesn't everyone?

Yeah, right, bagpipes were very big in my neighborhood.

[bagpipes droning]

You're kidding. You don't actually play?

Yes, I do. Well, I did. A little.

In my wilder days, I had this boyfriend,

and he figured a rock and roll bagpipe band

was the thing.

Far out, man.

Groovy.

I think we should try affixing dates and places of origin

to as many of these artifacts as we can.

If there's some kind of pattern,

it might help us finding out whose idea of joke this box is.

[bagpipes continue]

[intercom beeps]

Yes, Frederick.

Yeah. Derek, Frederick wants to see you.

There's some electrical problem in the hallway.

-[Derek] Coming? -Sure.

Have fun.

[chuckles]

[playing melody]

[Derek] Frederick.

[Frederick] It's very strange, Dr. Rayne,

but all the lights in the library and this corridor,

they keep exploding.

I replace them, leave, come back and...

They're broken again.

Well, it could be some kind of power surge, a short.

Maybe something wrong with the bulbs.

Call an electrician in the morning.

In the meantime, we should leave the switches off

and not replace any more bulbs.

All right, then.

Thank you very much.

[Nick] Thank you, Frederick.

Maybe we should look into the possibility

this has something to do with that box.

[creature babbling]

[chuckles]

Will there be anything else for the evening?

-Oh, I think that ought to do it. -Very well, then.

I'll just finish up in the kitchen

and before I leave for the night,

I'll bring up some bulbs from the storage unit.

-[creature babbling] -Just in case you need them.

Mmm, Frederick.

How's your head feeling?

Hard as ever, Ms. Alex.

[chuckles]

Thank you for asking, and good night.

Good night, Frederick.

[creature growling]

Although the handwork and the markings appear much older,

I am starting from the 19th century and working my way back.

It was not uncommon for the silversmiths

to make their work look older, therefore, more valuable.

[creature growling]

Whoa!

Whoa!

[creature chittering]

Oh!

What's going on?

[muffled groaning]

Alex?

Ugh!

[panting]

[groans]

[laughing]

It's not funny.

Yes, it is.

No permanent damage, didn't even break the skin.

Good thing you had those drapes on your head.

If I could only figure out how they got on me.

-Yeah. -Did you see anything?

No.

I just heard this high-pitch sound

and then the drapes fell.

Let's take it from the beginning.

Step by step.

You were here like this, reading.

Right.

You reached over for the plate.

Maybe, you inadvertently knocked over the milk glass.

It broke on the floor.

You stood up, startled, as anyone would.

You tipped the couch back over.

Grabbed for the drapes, pulled them down,

and the curtain rod hit you on the head.

Derek, I was drinking milk, not scotch.

I was only playing devil's advocate.

And I didn't pull the drapes down,

I distinctly heard the curtain rod pop out,

and then when I looked up, that's when I heard the noise.

What kind of noise?

It was a hum, a drone, it could even have been voices.

And the drapes fell,

and I'm struggling, struggling, struggling, it hits me... Ow!

God! Hits me on the head,

it was definitely a metallic object.

You were studying the silver pitcher.

-Right. -Where is it?

It's gone.

No, it can't be gone.

-Yeah. -It was right there.

It was not uncommon for the silversmiths

to make their work look older, therefore, more valuable.

[clattering]

-[buzzing] -[Alexandra groaning]

See, that's the noise. That's exactly what I heard.

There may have been more in Sloan's gift box

than just a pile of junk.

We want to send your box back to you, William, immediately.

What's the problem?

Well, I think the damn thing is haunted.

Surprise, surprise.

I told you to be careful.

We ran every test available

before we opened it,

and every result was negative.

Hope no one's been hurt.

Nothing serious.

Whatever this entity is,

at least for now, doesn't appear to be malevolent.

It just likes the dark,

it seems to get upset if you turn the lights on.

Photophobic.

Yes.

So turn the lights out and go to bed.

It's late enough even for you, Derek.

We looked at the scan you did of the box.

So far, we found nothing like it in any Legacy database.

I've assigned several teams

to start digging through the stacks in our library.

Any guesses who might have sent this?

Guesses? Plenty.

Unfortunately, The Legacy has never been short on enemies.

Hopefully, if we can build a pattern from the contents,

it might give us some leads.

I'll keep you in the loop.

I'll be here.

In the meantime, Derek,

remember what happened to Pandora

when she opened the wrong box.

Going by the silversmith's mark on the missing pitcher,

I'd put it at 18th century Wales.

Well, this appears to be...

What is it, 16th century English?

And this leather strap,

it could come from a saddle,

possibly Austrian, 18th century.

And I got Irish linen, 14th century,

and by the style of the carving in the wood,

this appears to be Belgian.

Late 17th, maybe 18th century.

Well, I have hopes of getting this one right on the money.

The doll's dress is embroidered

"To Clarissa, Love Aunt Jeanette."

I am running a search on the girl's name,

cross reference with the aunt's, and voila.

Very clever.

So how are we doing on everything else?

Good, with reference to

trying to figure out where this junk comes from.

And not so good as far as how everything's related.

It's all random from different countries, different centuries.

The oldest seems to be the box and these bagpipes.

Thirteenth century Scotland I think.

Maybe that's where we should start.

Mmm-hmm. Have you had a chance to try it out? See what you remembered?

Do you know the expression, "Waking the dead"?

[all laugh]

I don't think it's exactly prudent in this house.

No, seriously, you should try playing it.

It would be interesting to hear

what an instrument that old could sound like.

A-ha! Well, maybe I will,

but not in public.

Go get some rest. You too, Alex.

I have a feeling we have a long night ahead of us.

Mmm.

Well, all right. If you hear some

melodic wheezing coming from upstairs, lad,

it'll either be my lungs collapsing

or these bagpipes, won't it now?

[laughing]

[buzzing on recording]

[pitch modulating]

[bagpipes playing]

[creature buzzing]

[creature babbling]

[creature squeaking]

[buzzing and warbling]

[sighs]

[clattering]

[creature babbling]

[many creatures squeaking]

[creatures buzzing]

[groans]

[creatures squealing]

Derek, what happened? Are you all right?

Oh, yes. I heard some noises,

I came down, and something tripped me and...

What the hell went on in there?

[Nick] No lights.

[Derek] What a surprise.

Looks like there was a party going on before you crashed it.

Just your average beer drinking,

chess playing, things that go bump in the night.

Well, this guy was one move away from checkmate.

When you interrupted, no wonder they got angry.

Where'd you find that?

It was thrown at me.

These guys are regular party animals.

Get Alex and Rachel.

I want some tests run.

Check the inside of this for residue.

See if we can determine

chemistry of the stains on the doll.

What are you looking for?

I am not sure, it's just a feeling.

But putting all this prankish behavior aside,

I'd say we'd be making a big mistake

if we underestimated these beings.

Yeah.

[laughs]

I am sorry

to be taking this so lightly,

but from where I am sitting, everything you're telling me

sounds fairly comical.

You sure you're not the one who had one too many beers, Derek?

No, but I'm considering it.

I've apologized already.

One apology per conversation

is as much as I ever allow myself.

This was intended to be your problem if you remember.

I do remember.

I also understand your concern.

The line between malice and mischief can be very tenuous,

especially with spirits.

I think we're actually getting somewhere.

Yeah?

William, I am switching you over into the control room.

Alex, Nick.

Rachel, good evening.

[Alex] Good evening.

Okay, we have Clarissa Mayhew

who was born in London, England,

March 5th, 1856.

Aunt Jeanette was Jeanette Montpelier.

Jeanette Montpelier?

If it's the same one, she was the Precept of the Paris House,

who was murdered.

Well, that's very possible, sir.

In 1865, while visiting her aunt in Paris,

the two of them were apparently bludgeoned to death

while asleep in their beds.

And just to make things creepier,

the stains on this doll

are human blood.

The chemistry of the residue in the pitcher

came up pretty lethal as well.

You have a date and place of origin for that pitcher?

Yes, Welsh, 18th century.

"Selwyn Roberts, Legacy member.

Poisoned in Cardiff, May 19th, 1761."

We also have a saddle with a cut bridle.

"Heinrich Olsdorff,

died from a fall during a hunt

under suspicious circumstances, Vienna, 1705."

Where are you pulling your information from?

I opened a file listing "Mysterious deaths of Legacy members."

What you seem to have thereare souvenirs of these murders.

I'll download my file,

and you can try to match up the rest of those artifacts.

All we need to know is what these entities are

and who sent them.

The what is much more important at the moment than the who,

your safety is foremost.

And believe me, once we know how many of these murders were connected,

we'll find out who's responsible.

Derek, if you need anything, we're here.

[Derek] Thank you, William.

Keep the lights on.

[Alex] I feel an all-nighter coming on.

[Nick] Yeah, I think I'm gonna go make some coffee.

-You want some? -That would be great.

-Rachel? -Please.

-Derek? -No, thank you.

Here. Keep it on.

Deal.

So, where do we start?

[creature babbling]

[exclaims]

[creature buzzing, metal tapping]

[creatures chittering]

[exclaims]

Come on.

Come on.

Come out, come out, wherever you are.

[creatures growling]

All right. Are you gonna give me another shot?

You gonna give me another shot? Come on.

[creature growling]

All right, that's strike two.

You gonna give me another one? Huh?

Huh?

[creature screeching]

Gotcha!

[creatures babbling]

[groans]

[grunting]

[yells]

[exclaims]

There's something definitely in there.

Yeah, there is something in there, all right.

-I still need more light. -Yeah.

Try this. Watch your eyes.

-[high-pitched scream] -[groans]

What just happened?

I heard that same scream when I crushed one of them.

There had to be some reason why they're photophobic.

They run from light.

It kills them.

But they were there when I had the lights on.

They actually crashed the bulbs.

It didn't kill them then.

Hmm. Regular bulbs have a limited range of wavelengths.

This lamp has the same full range

of infrared and ultraviolet as sunlight.

That's what kills them.

So they're afraid of all light,

but it's only sunlight that kills them, huh?

Apparently.

All right, hold still.

[Nick] Man, they're definitely out for blood now.

All right, hold still.

-There! -[grunts]

I got it.

Here.

All right.

What is it?

I am not sure, it's so small, I can't see it.

[Derek] Here, let me have it.

Look at this.

Seeing is believing.

If I hadn't seen this myself,

I wouldn't believe it.

Let me see.

It just looks like a tiny insect.

[Derek] I wish it was.

If not, then what is it?

[clears throat] Good question.

Alex, put it on the screen.

Watch.

Your insect

is a medieval suit of armor.

This is really wild.

That explains how it could break the lights.

It also explains

why Nick was in so much pain.

That thing was slashing away inside him until the light killed it.

Tiny weapons.

These little guys are really loaded for bear.

[Derek] Look.

[Nick] Unbelievable.

[Rachel] Look at that.

Okay.

If I hadn't seen it for myself,

I'd think you were pulling my leg.

Believe me, William, I wish I was.

Whoever sent those things here to kill you

meant business.

Hmm. Light sensitive, tiny, ruthless flying creatures.

You know what we're dealing with here, Derek?

An infestation of fairies.

Fairies?

Excuse me, but I don't remember

Tinker Bell going after Peter Pan with a battle-ax.

The Victorians sanitizedthe ancient legends, you know.

Created those images of tiny gentle things

with gossamer wings.

Most of them are nothing more than paranormal gnats.

Some of those little people are anything but gentle.

Keep in touch.

[distant groaning]

That sounds like Frederick.

I thought he went home.

No, he did say something about going down to the storage bin.

Hold on. Sloan was right.

The more we know, the safer we are.

So look at the armor again,

input every fact we have, find out anything you can.

-And keep that close. -Okay.

Let's go.

[fairy babbling]

Frederick?

Frederick!

Frederick?

Frederick.

[Derek] Frederick.

[fairies buzzing]

Nick, stay back.

Turn on your light.

[fairies screaming]

[fairies screaming]

[wings fluttering]

Let's get him out of here.

[Alex] The other clans along with the help of The Legacy

stalked and captured the dreaded Cavandish.

They were tried, convicted and burned at the stake.

Their souls, cursed to damnation,

consigned to live in eternal darkness

never to see the sunlight again.

Well, that certainly explains the effect that light has on them.

And their grudge against The Legacy.

-Frederick is dead. -[Rachel] What!

He was in the basement, they swarmed him.

Oh, my God.

So what have you found out?

What, you walk in here and announce that Frederick is dead,

and then what, oh, yeah, it's business as usual?

You're not even gonna give us a minute?

I am sorry, Rachel, but I am afraid we don't have a minute.

Those creatures out there are working themselves up into a frenzy.

They're here to kill us.

They haven't yet figured out how

to get into this room, but they will.

Well, "they" are the Clan Cavandish.

We found this crest on the chest plate of the armor.

Notice that the tartan field behind the two dragons

match that of the bagpipe.

So we did a search of the Scottish heraldry database

and found out who the tartan belonged to.

It's the Clan Cavandish.

They were vicious, marauding highwaymen

who supposedly turned to the occult to help them escape the law.

In 1296, the Legacy

assisted an army sent in by Robert the Bruce to wipe them out.

And in answer to the curse,

banishment into eternal darkness,

their leader Ian Cavandish is reputed to have replied,

"We can drink enough of our enemies' blood before dawn

to hold us through the daylight hours."

[Nick] Well, it's almost dawn now.

So we either wait here and get boxed in,

or else, we go after them.

He's right.

I don't believe hunting them will work.

They hid when we went after Frederick.

They must have known that we were armed.

No, we have to trap them somehow.

What are we gonna use for bait?

The Scottish clan.

[Derek] I isolated the buzzing sound on Alex's tape,

now, if we slow this down...

[buzzing, pitch modulating]

[bagpipes playing]

It's a bagpipe.

[Derek] It's the original heating duct system.

The ducts converge in the northeast corner of the basement

where the old furnace used to be.

Now, if we can somehow lure them down there,

we can seal the room.

This could all backfire on us.

Are you sure you're game?

I can do it.

[playing bagpipes]

[fairy chittering]

[Derek] We need all of them.

Wait.

The door, now!

[fairies screaming]

[wings fluttering]

[Rachel] Where are they?

[Derek] They're in here somewhere, we blocked the exits.

There.

[fairies screaming]

[Rachel] No.

[grunts]

[blades swishing]

[Derek] We need to get out of here, or they'll kill us.

Nick!

The window!

Break it!

[fairy screaming]

[fairy screams]

I am totally responsible for everything that happened here last night.

[Derek] Why?

Because the box was addressed to you?

Because I allowed myself to take the situation too lightly.

It cost a man his life.

None of us could've known.

You did, Derek, you said it.

You said they were sent with a purpose.

I lost sight of that.

"We," William.

-We lost sight of it. -No, my friend.

I'm the one with the ultimate responsibility

for the safety of this organization and its members.

The death has occurred in my house.

That's my responsibility.

Shared, or otherwise, it's still my responsibility.

So is finding out who or what sent that box.

I can have a Legacy courier pick up the box and artifacts

and bring them to London if that'd be all right with you.

We'll get a complete workup going as quickly as possible.

Thanks.

Give my best to Patricia and the children.

I will.

[William]Maybe living here behind this big desk

has taken the edge off.

Being out there, the mission, the goal,

the adrenaline, the risk...

And if I was wrong,

it was only my own life that was on the line.
