- That's how it all ends.
But let's start at the beginning.
I'm Nina Blackburn and what you're about to see
is a documentary on the rap group, NWH,
or Niggaz With Hats.
I began this project as a thesis for my
doctorate in sociology.
My belief was that not only does rap function
as the political voice of today's urban youth,
but it also serves as a tracer of styles and values.
I was attracted to NWH because of the strong
political poses adopted on such albums as
the controversial and never released Kill Whitey album.
This group also seems to epitomize the disdain
towards women found in much of rap culture,
with songs such as My Peanuts and Booty Juice,
which they claim is a political theme.
So sit back and enjoy.
The brothers have a lot to say.
Now, I hear you guys are from a really rough neighborhood.
- Yeah. - Oh, yeah.
- So where, Compton?
The sewer?
Oakland, Oaktown?
- All that shit's for punks.
- [Nina] Brooklyn?
- No, no, see we don't necessarily like to say
where we from.
- [Nina] I thought all rappers liked to say where
they're from, you know, bragging about
their neighborhood as the toughest.
- Yeah, we could.
But I mean, that's just like some motherfucker
that say he got a big dick and can fuck for hours.
- Exactly, so what we saying is,
we don't front.
You know, we perform in this motherfucker.
- Bet.
- [Nina] They say it's the quiet ones
that you have to watch out for.
- And if you've noticed, I ain't said shit
for a couple minutes now.
- [Nina] That's true.
And I also noticed that you don't smile too much.
- You damn skippy.
- 'Cause you be smiling, motherfuckers think you a punk.
- And I ain't no punk.
- See, Tasty, he once shot a motherfucker
for taking his picture while he was
thinking about smiling.
- How about when you're making love?
- [All] Nah.
- See, if you smile, then a woman thinks she got you.
- Bet.
You know, the next thing you know,
she asking you for money and shit.
- Exactly, I mean, you know,
the best thing, if you think you the kind of
motherfucker that's predisposed to be
smiling and shit, you best to kick that shit
doggy-style. - Pow!
- You know, then you can go in from behind, right?
And then you don't have to worry about
her seeing you and shit.
You can be making all kinds of faces.
- Right, but you gotta make sure you ain't got
no mirrors or nothing around, you know.
- Ice, at that time you had a song out
called My Peanuts?
- See, that's one of my first things that I dropped,
right, My Peanuts.
I had to get that pressed myself
and then sold it out the trunk of my car
right here on this very street.
- I remember, that was dope.
- And he was, he was slinging bean pies,
because he was hooked up in that Muslim shit,
Tone was, and uh...

there's a lot of evils and ills out there in the world
we want you to stay clear of.
- See, you gotta understand, when we was y'all's age,

Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
Making serious ends.

Last year there was seven hundred billion dollars missing
from the nation's savings and loans.
I ain't gonna say no more.
- I'm sure that these gentlemen aren't
responsible for any savings and loans fraud.
- You right, teacher, 'cause they too stupid
to even think of something that brilliant.
And they too soft to even pull it off.
- Yo, we about as soft as a cock in a henhouse. [laughs]
- Look, how many times have you been shot?
Show 'em your wounds, Boot.
- No, no, no.
- No, no, no, they got little kids here.
This brother been shot 22 times.

Man, I was trying to be nice to y'all,

My man used to go to a prep school.
- Who? - That was a pimp school, man!
- Look at this, look at this here.
Prep school.
Look, my man.
Class of '87.
See?
Bow tie, checkered pants.
He was on the glee club.
My man was on the yearbook staff.
He was the yearbook editor.
How you gonna be a hardcore OG gangsta
editing a yearbook?
- Well, that's great.
That is such a cute picture.
Let's pass it around the class--
- Give me that!
- Hey, hey, get back before I kick your ass,
you going to ruin our rep.
- Well, see it's uplifting for the kids
to see that kind of thing.
- Show 'em how much punk they was!
Show that piece of paper!
- You's a punk-ass bitch!
- [Tasty] Why you gotta curse in front of the fucking kids?
[all clamoring]
- Wait, wait, wait!
[guns cocking]
- Look out!
- Get off me, let me through here!
[children screaming] [guns firing]
Save yourself, save yourself!
I quit!
I'm outta here!
[woman laughs]
- Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, T!

- Left and right and back and forth.
- We got it.
- So that's what you heard, huh?
- Yeah, and it's just a rumor.
Right?
- Yeah, baby.
Remember what I told you about jealousy?
- Mm-hmm.
- It's a motherfucker.
But I'm with you.
You're my baby.
Please don't let that fool ruin us.
- I won't. - Okay, baby.
My baby.
You go ahead, I'll catch up.
I gotta get my bag.
- Aight, hurry up.

- Yo, I just don't wanna see my boy
gettin' played like that.
You know what I'm saying?
I mean, that's my boy, I gotta look out for him.
- No, do you have a problem with me?
- Look, what I'm saying is,
I've known this motherfucker for a long time.
- Do you have a problem with me?
- I've known this motherfucker before you were here,
all right?
Before you were thought about.
- Well, I'm with him now.
Do you have a problem with me?
- I just might.
- Cool.
- So, now, you're Cheryl C.
And I notice you've hooked up with Tasty.
- Yeah.
- How did that happen?
- Ooh, let's see.
Tasty and I...
Who are you?
- I'm sorry, I'm Nina Blackburn,
and I'm doing a documentary on language
and communication and I'm kind of
following the group around.
- So you're on the road with them?
- [Nina] Yes.
- Uh-huh.
- [Nina] Don't worry.
[Cheryl laughs]
So, now, where did you first meet Tasty?
- Tasty and I met kinda sorta at a concert,
but not really.
I mean, I was hanging out backstage
and we hooked up.
- [Nina] You meet a lot of men hanging out backstage?
- It's not like that.
I mean, there are there girls, honey,
who are straight up skeezers, who will look to
jump on a brother's jock just 'cause he's
got a little money, you know, a little fame.
That's not me.
- [Nina] How many celebrities have you been out with?
- [scoffs] I don't know, 14.
[rap music]
- Yes!
Yes!
So, what you think, Marty?
- Ah, I am in awe.
Fantastic.
- Yo, run that again, aight?
- Oh, actually, we gotta get over to the studio,

- [Tone] Where you going?
- Oh, man, I forgot.
I'm supposed to go do this audition thing with Jack today.
- Aw, no, Ice.
We supposed to be finishing the tracks today.
- Well, don't worry about it,

- What's more important, that stupid audition or NWH?
- Hey, look, man, I said I'm gonna be back,
I'm gonna be back, all right?
I'm outtie. [snaps]
- Hey, uh, I'm gonna be sure to get you guys

I really personally don't like most of the motherfuckers.
I mean, you know, that ain't me, I gotta stretch.
Man, look at this, I'm carrying this little revolver.
You know I have an AK out this mug.
And then this, look here, listen to this.
"Yo motherfucker, drop it."
Now, how am I sound saying some shit like that?

Oh, oh, check this out.
This is Jike Spingleton.
This is director of New Mack Village,

- Yeah.
Hey, hey, don't turn the camera off,
I got something to say.
I got something to say to John and to Spike
and to Matty.
You stole my shit!
I had the hat before you did, I had the glasses
before you did, and I was short before you were!
Wasn't I?
- Yeah, they stole all his shit, man.
I mean, this motherfucker was short,
nearsighted, and angry long before y'all motherfuckers.
- I'm pissed.
- I heard.
- [Man] Jike, we're ready.
- They're ready.
- All right, man.
- [Man] Scene 59, take three, marker.
[slate clacks]
- Now, I done told you about holding back on me!
Now, kicking out freebies to your friends

This ain't no Mickey D's

So the next time you come up short, it's your behind.
You got it?

Give me that.
Oh, look, you a little white child, too.
Don't let 'em tell you this stuff ain't

Boy, it ain't too late for you to straighten up.
And it ain't too late for you either.

- Hey, man... [scoffs]
He ain't gonna miss no gig.
- He missed the soundcheck.
- Yeah, he missed the soundcheck.
- He gon' be here.
he probably ran just a little over schedule
on that movie thing.
- And why is he the only one doing a movie?
- Cheryl, please.
- All I'm saying is he's getting all the props
and y'all are being pushed in the background.
- Okay, way in the blackground.
Yo, Tone, Ice is off point.
- Hey, man, I ain't gonna even trip, all right?
- All right.
But if you ask me, he's treating both of y'all
like a buncha fools.
And I don't know, but you better look out.
And I don't trust that Marty the manager either.
- Well, ain't nobody asking you.
Look, I ain't gonna let you undermine
my spiritual oneness here tonight.
You understand me?
Tasty, I suggest you do the same, my brother.
- Tasty'll do what Tasty wants to do.
And tonight what you wanna do is talk to Marty and Ice
and get this shit cleared up,
because you deserve everything Ice is getting, plus some.
- Hello, guys.
Sorry we're late.
- Yo, hon, how you doing?
- Have a good show tonight, huh?
Gonna knock 'em dead, huh?
Sorry, we had airport traffic.
Okay, let's go out there and do it, huh?
- Yo, man.
I saw the crowd out front.
Tonight's show is gonna be phat and all that.
- You better go get dressed, huh?
Come on, the show's gonna begin pretty soon.
- Bet.
Yo, um, T.
Could you excuse your lady, man?
- Yo, Cheryl, he gotta get dressed.
Why don't you step out--
- No, no, no, don't you have something you want to say?
- I was gonna talk to him later.
- No, baby, you need to talk now.
You need to deal with this.
T is tired of y'all doggin' him.
- Doggin' him?
- And quite frankly, so am I.
- Who the fuck are you?
- Obviously the only person here
who cares about T's welfare.
- How long you been on welfare?
- I'm the one who wants to know
why T isn't doing a film
and why T isn't getting the interviews.
And why T isn't getting the same hype you're getting.
- Maybe you need to ask T why he's putting up
with your trifling ass.
- You don't talk to me like that.
- I just did.
- I know your type, I been wat-
I been watching him, baby.
- Yeah, she been telling me stuff about you
to watch out for. - Mm-hmm!
- Yo, man, I don't have to listen to this bitch

- Hey, hey, hey, hey.
- Don't be calling her a bitch, man!
Why it gotta be about that?
- Hey, hey!
Hey!
Look, man, let's just do this show, all right?
- [Tasty] Yeah.
- Let's get out there and perform, 'cause we don't
get paid if we don't perform.
Now, first things first, deal with this shit later.
[crowd cheering]
- T, man, just step off.
Step off!
- I told you if you put your hands on me,
I'll have to fuck you up.
- Man, you got a problem, man?
I'll start some shit right now.
- I told you don't--
[both grunting]
That's right, how you feel?
[all clamoring]
- Come on, get up!
[crowd cheering]
We really need to talk about
what happened out there tonight.
- No, no, no, no.
I think we need to talk about
what didn't happen out there tonight
and what didn't happen is that we didn't get paid.
Now, we roll up on another gig,
I don't get my motherfucking money,
I will kick a nigga's motherfucking ass if I have to!
- Okay, okay, okay.
No need to get loud.
We can all work this out.

Motherfucker...
Shit, where's your wallet, man?
Where is your motherfucking wallet?
- I got it.

- Yeah, well, she just holds onto my wallet while I perform.
So what?
- So what?
Motherfucker, just count your fucking ends
the next time you get that motherfucker back.
If you get it back!
- I know he better stop disrespecting me.
- Yo, you better stop dissin' Cheryl.

Motherfucker, you gonna make me stop
disrespecting that bitch?
- Hell, yeah, I'm gonna make you, nigga.
- Well, let's go, motherfucker.

Let's go!
Come on, come on.
I ain't scared of your ass.

I ain't havin' it, motherfucker.
- You niggas gonna fight or fuck?
- Let's go!
- Hey, hey!
Stop!
That's enough.
Let's go to sleep.
We'll talk about this in the morning.
- Bet, that might be the move.
- I could work with that.
- I could work with that.
- So, now, you are not afraid to um,
work with a group whose last five managers were killed?
- No, no, no.
You know, a lot is made of that, but uh,
it's really no big deal, you know.
Those happened to have been very, very tragic accidents,
but uh, nothing deliberate.
- No fear at all?
- No, no.
Oh, you mean this?
No, no, no, I just...
I keep this because it's uh,
you know, it's just something that the guys have.
You know, the guys are into guns,
so I thought I'd get one because um...
You know, it's something we can talk about.
It's like a male bonding kind of thing,
you know what I mean?
I don't keep it loaded.
Look, see, it's empty, and I keep the bullets hidden.
I certainly don't plan on ever using it.
You don't need to apologize,
but we need to talk this out, all right?
I mean, he's as upset about this as you are.
- Okay, but if he even begins to act ill,
I'm through with his ass, Marty.
- Okay, okay.
Let's just, let's just calm things down,
let's talk things out, all right?
- All right.
[door beeps]
- Morning.
- Yo, Ice.
Wake up, man.
- [Marty] Wake up.
Good morning!
- [Tasty] Yo, Ice!
- [Marty] Good morning!
- Wake up.
- Yo, man, got the sunshine coming in and everything?
What's up?
- Wake up, we gotta talk.
- Listen, you gotta get up.
We gotta talk about this, this is important.
- What is it, man?
Let's talk, let's...
Uh...
- Wake up, man, we gotta talk.
- Let's talk later, man.
I mean, you know, I got somebody here right now, man,
so we should just talk a little later,
you know what I'm saying?
- [Marty] Oh, I'm sorry, we didn't--
- Yo, Martin, don't worry about it, man.
I seen him with a pow-pow before,
it ain't no big deal.
- [quietly] Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo!
- Oh, shit!
- Oh, shit.
- Oh, shit!
- Oh, shit!
- That's it!
That's it, everybody's gonna die!
- [Marty] Okay, okay, listen-- - Bullshit!
- [Marty] That's enough!
- How could you do this, Ice?
- Man, I told you, baby's a freak.
- [Marty] Put 'em down!
- Oh, I'm gonna have to kill your ass!
- Well, then we just gonna be two dead motherfuckers.
'Cause I ain't dying alone.
- Okay, that's enough!
Put 'em down before somebody gets hurt!
Oh, my god!
I need my bullets.
- What the fuck is wrong with you, Cheryl?
- Ain't nothing wrong with me a man can't fix.
- Oh, so you saying I ain't a man?
- I'm saying I needed what I needed when I needed it.
- So what'd you buy her, Ice?
- Nothing, man, that bitch is a ho.
- Ho?
- Yeah, you heard him, you's a ho.
- Oh, I ain't gonna be too many more hos
in this motherfucker.
Fuck this shit.
Fuck it!

Everybody here is gonna die!
[all clamoring]
- Stop before somebody gets killed!
[gun fires]
[bullet ricocheting]
- Damn!
- It was your fault, motherfucker!
Man, you should never have done nothing like this!
- You ain't shouldn't have been bringing that babe

- Hear that?
I'll shoot your dick off, motherfucker!
[all bickering]
- My dick is getting hard!
I been waiting for this!
Yeah!
[all bickering]
- [Nina] This incident proved to be the final straw.
NWH was history.
Now, this album is your first artistic venture
since leaving NWH.
- Yeah, well, you know, um, I thought it was time
for me to step off, you know,
and kick that whole NWH thing to the curb for a minute
and find my own flavor, you know what I'm saying?
- You say that this album is politically oriented,
but this song is called Come Pet the P-U-S-S-Y.
- Come Pet the Pussy.
Yeah, but we do, I do say P-U-S-S-Y in the song
'cause I set it up like that,
kinda like it's the letters.
You know, like an analagram.
- Anagram?
- Like an anagram, you know what I'm saying?
So it's like P is Political,
U Unrest, S Stabilizes, another S Society,
Y Year.
- [Nina] No.
- Yeah.
- And so what we're saying is if we wanna change
this madness that's going on in our community,
in our world, then we gotta step to the pussy,
step to this ideology.
We gotta embrace the pussy.
You understand?
Embracing the...
You ever had your pussy embraced?
- Uh...
- I mean, has someone like really came up and just,
you know, embraced that motherfucker?

It seems his latest manager has ripped Tasty off
for more than a few thousand dollars.
In other NWH news, Ice Cold now finds himself
embroiled in a lawsuit filed by Mabel Ann Jackson,
who claims she's received neither credit
nor compensation for singing the female lead vocal track
on the Ice Plant single Come and Pet the P.U.S.S.Y.
With us right now in the studio is Tiffini,
who refutes Mabel Ann's claim and says it was

Tone's assertion that he's not black.
First he was turned down by a cabbie on Broadway
and then when he attacked the car,

"I am only human," the cabbie jumped out
