scientist, lightning expert,
and occasional hand model.

And over the next few weeks,
I'll be teaching you firsthand

the necessary skills
and techniques you need

to become a lightning catcher
much like myself.

-But first,
lightning, what is it?
-[lightning crackles]

Lightning is electricity
made up of tiny particles.

Half of them
have a positive charge,

the other half,
a negative charge.

Now, they pull towards
each other like magnets,

but the turbulent winds
of a storm

force these charges to separate
from within the cloud.

-[whizzing sounds]
-When this happens,
the negative charge

hurls towards the ground
in search of a positive charge.

-Wait a second. I got an idea.
-Wait. Wait, what?

-[groaning] Oh, I don't
really wanna do this.
-[Lucas shushing]

Remember, acting is reacting.

From the ground,
a positive charge forms,

searching for its matching
negative charge from the cloud.

When these two meet,
it makes a path
for a powerful charge

to shoot up into the cloud,
aka lightning.

-Wait, don't move.
-Wait, what?

-[taser crackling]
-[groaning]

It may look as if lightning
is traveling from the cloud
to the ground,

but it actually starts
from the ground
via a positive charge.

[Clem]
