is an abandoned building

with many dark mysteries.

If you grew up in the neighborhood,

you knew to avoid this place

like the plague.

Then there's the Rispin curse.

People have died on the property,

said to be from this curse.

[Zak] Henry Rispin,

a successful Canadian-born entrepreneur,

finished building the mansion in 1923

with hopes that it would be

the centerpiece of a world-class resort.

But his neglect of essential responsibilities

birthed its downfall,

and only six years later,

in reflection of great financial static,

Rispin Mansion was auctioned off.

Following this loss, Rispin's wife died,

and then his son.

Rispin died a year later,

totally broke

and buried in an unmarked grave

in San Francisco.

After this wave of defeat and tragedy,

the doors at Rispin were wide open for more darkness.

Multiple fires, vandalism,

and a string of mysterious deaths

have cemented what many call the Rispin Curse.

[bell tolling]

I've been trying to set up

an investigation here for years,

Because at one point,

the mayor approved

a paranormal investigation here

...to try to get answers,

because they believe in this curse.

And anybody that's connected to the building,

all the way back to the owners and builders,

they're all struck with this curse.

During that investigation,

they all witnessed

a lady being violently kicked down the stairs

And after that was witnessed,

the mayor shut the investigation down,

sealed the mansion up,

put this gate here with the padlock.

They don't want to touch it.

We're here to pick back up

where that last investigation left off in 2012

to help the city unravel this curse

and find its source.

The first steps towards the dark,

violent, sad, and downright evil energy

that lives inside this building is exhilarating.

Opening that fence is a sign

that this curse is upon us now,

whether we like it or not.

The mansion literally is sitting on top of a cliff.

Resting on the banks of the Soquel Creek,

named after the Native Americans

that were forced to leave their sacred land.

This entire region was really born under a bad sign.

This was the home

of the Soquel Native Americans.

And in 1791, the Spanish came in

and built the Santa Cruz mission system.

All of these Soquel Native Americans were

either forced into the mission

and had to convert their religion

or else many of them were killed

or they were forced to leave their homeland.

And right on the other side of this building is

the Soquel Creek.

And that creek is known to be very sacred

and literally is the vein

that runs right beside the mansion.

If you look at the mansion,

every single window,

every single crack, crevice, doorway

is completely sealed.

And I'm not talking about just a piece of plywood.

I'm talking about-- It is literally...

I don't know if this is stucco or whatever,

it is absolutely sealed.

Whatever this evil is inside,

they have literally sealed it shut.

[Zak] And there is no doubt in my mind

that it has been waiting for an opportunity to explode.

[Zak] Our first interview, Tim,

a former Federal law enforcement officer,

was involved

in the very investigation I spoke of.

The one that ultimately shut this place down in 2012.

that was approved to investigate from the mayor.

One of our investigators was kicked

and she fell down some stairs.

-[Zak] And he saw it? -[Tim] He saw it.

And once the mayor witnessed that?

He was pretty much, "Okay, that scared me,

and I think this is getting dangerous."

The mayor shut down a paranormal investigation

because of not things he heard about,

because of things

he saw.

Why did they keep it sealed up?

cult stuff.

What type of cult stuff?

If you know anything about Santa Cruz,

there's been a lot of murderers,

a lot of serial killers from this area.

we were the murder capital of the world there

used as a place for devil worshiping.

of the energy that exudes from this evil edifice

which means I need to find a historian

with the most comprehensive knowledge

of both his legacy and his downfall,

Like I was acting as almost like a translator

between her, Aubrey, and the male entity.

she thought somebody literally had kicked her.

Before we begin, I confirm her relationship with Aubrey.

I don't know why,

but I feel like the energy of their conflict could

bring a key to open this circle

that was created as a portal.

And if we could peek inside,

maybe we could find the source of the Rispin curse.

Although we were not able to make it out at the time,

we will discover while reviewing the evidence

that a very threatening message came through,

which makes what happens next even more disturbing.

The figure seems to disappear,

What happens next is shocking

that the only voice we're hearing is

this same man.

As incredible as the audio captures are,

we decide to quit while we're ahead

and start to organize what we have captured

for the evidence review tomorrow.

We have yet to realize

how truly historic this investigation is.

the nature of the curse the mansion is under.

Although a long drive,

it's worth the reward.

What can you tell me about his life

and how this whole building was built there?

[Carolyn] I mean, Rispin, his idea was to come in

and quickly make a profit.

[Zak] Mm-hmm. So did Rispin fail?

[Carolyn] Yeah, he overextended himself.

He tried to do more than he had money for.

-He builds the mansion in what, '21? - Deborah] '21.

[Carolyn] And then by '23,

he's already eager to sell.

He wants to divest himself of Capitola.

[Zak] Of all of-- he just wants to get out of here.

Why would you give up on everything

and want to leave?

He was trying to attract other wealthy people

to come to Capitola.

Why did people not come?

Nobody knows, really.

That's why the mystery.

It should have succeeded.

So what happened to his life after 1922-23,

when he loses the mansion?

Poof, he's gone.

-He's gone. Where's he gone? -He's gone.

Nobody knew where he went.

And he dies totally penniless,

and that's why he's buried in a unmarked grave

-at the Olivet Cemetery up in Colma. -Wow.

So what is this whole Rispin Mansion curse?

It wasn't a place that was welcoming to people.

It was always this odd building

down by the creek.

And it dominated the whole landscape.

After the Rispin era,

after Poor Clares,

-it sat there. -Yeah.

It sat there for 20 years.

Nothing that was ever proposed for the Rispin Mansion, hotel,

retirement center,

all these ideas were proposed,

none of them succeeded.

Nothing has ever worked there.

-Nothing? -Nothing.

This is where the curse comes in?

The whole Rispin Mansion era thing has been mysterious.

[Deborah] Yeah, it has to be something more to it.

It has to be something more to it.

I needed this information.

We are getting ready right now

to begin our lockdown investigation

here at the very cursed, the very abandoned,

the very haunted,

the very terrifying Rispin Mansion.

We are the only second group

to ever be allowed access to investigate this place.

The last team that investigated this place,

the mayor had to shut them down,

because of him even witnessing

a lady being attacked by this entity.

I believe this entity may be Henry Allen Rispin,

who we made contact with

for an extended communication session,

one of the most incredible communication interaction

that I have ever witnessed

and that we've captured ever.

You got to remember,

this whole property is said to be cursed and haunted.

There's been two people that have died here

that we know about,

that have been documented,

and very mysteriously.

And their bodies were found

right next to the mansion outside.

So once we pass this gate,

we say a prayer and we hope

that we get through this investigation safely.

As we prepare

for our lockdown investigation,

Jay will be monitoring

a live surveillance nerve center.

And almost immediately,

it seems as though our cameras are

recording activity.

So right now, we're just setting up.

And we're starting to see

some weird black shadows on this camera here.

And so we went full screen with the camera

to see if we can get a better eye on it.

After closer examination,

these dark shadows are just bats.

They all witnessed a lady being violently kicked

down the stairs

with a boot print on her.

Henry, we just heard

that a little girl went missing in here

and she was never found again.

We just heard that

from a uniformed police officer.

As we head to a room

where a pentagram is on the floor,

said to be a ritual site,

Billy sets up the motion detection strip

directly over it.

[Billy] That sweeping blue dot you see is

to show that it's working.

The sensor at this end of the rope will sense

I just had a really bad [bleep] stomach pain.

as we are near this pentagram.

Now I can't prove this is being caused

by a malevolent spirit

or this said-to-be satanic portal,

where we caught the very compelling mist form

This is where the mist was captured, right here.

where we believe we spoke with him the previous night

to see if he will come back and talk to us about this.
