then, here we are

at Donington race track,
where for the first time

since 1979, we're
about to see two

of the biggest names in
racing clash once again:

Freddie Hunt and Mathias Lauda.

The sons of racing legends
James Hunt and Niki Lauda

will go head to head here in a
historic battle out on track.

Will passionate
maverick Freddie follow

in James' famous footsteps
and clutch victory,

or will the level-headed
Austrian Mathias

show that experience and the
Lauda cool head will triumph?

We will see in this recreation
of motorsport history.

1976, the
Nuerburgring, the scene

of one of the most devastating
crashes in F1 history.

(dramatic music)

Niki Lauda's crash
of 1976 was one

of the most notorious
incidents in Formula 1.

The fire raged on while
his fellow drivers

desperately tried to
pull him from the flames.

His friend and fierce
rival, James Hunt,

would go on to win the race,

while Lauda was
rushed to hospital.

(dramatic music)

The 1976 F1 world
title race is one

of the greatest showcases
of racing rivalry

ever to grace the sport.

The fiendishly handsome
and charismatic Hunt

against the level-headed
and strategic Lauda.

The fiery and
passionate competition

between these men
inspired a generation

of motorsport fans and
even captivated Hollywood

in Ron Howard's
2014 film, "Rush."

- Dad and Niki, they
were very close friends,

albeit they are so
different in personality.

They had tremendous
respect for one another

as friends, as colleagues,
as competitors.

(melancholy music)

- James did it in his way
that suited his personality.

There were no borders.

Everything was possible, yes.

He choose for a certain
period of his life

to take every risk that was
needed to reach the goal.

Niki was more calculated.

"When do I do what?

When do I do this?
When do I do that?

When I avoid doing this, when?"

Everything was more calculated.

He was there not only
when he was in the car

with his hat, thinking
about it, but always.

(melancholy music)

- No, the way I understood it,

they were really good friends
because they liked each other.

All the others,
maybe not so much.

Because people, I mean,
they were very straight.

Everybody knew what the
other one is thinking anyway,

and James, he was
just the way he was,

and Niki exactly the
same, the way he was.

Maybe Niki was more
complicated to understand

for other people.

James was easier.
He was a life boy.

Yeah, he loved daily
life, everything.

He loved women.
He loved alcohol.

He'll tell you everything.
A really nice guy.

(melancholy music)

- Niki's sense of
humor, I think.

I think two or three
races to go in '76,

they had adjoining
rooms in the hotel,

and at six or seven
in the morning,

some god-awful hour as
far as Dad was concerned,

Niki came marching
in, fully suited up,

and said, "Good morning, James.

Today, I win the
World Championship,"

and marched out again. (laughs)

And that was sorta
Niki's sense of humor.

(melancholy music)

- [Mathias] My dad
stopped racing in '85,

so I was four years old.

Yeah, when he was still active,

I had no memories
because I was so small,

so he never brought
us to the racetrack.

My dad was really old school.

It's like work is work,
and family is family.

(pen scratching)

(pen tapping)
- Each page, no?

- Every page.
(Niki laughing)

(pen scratching)

- I retired two years ago
to start my own airline,

which I've done.

I worked two years for it.

The airline works.
Everything is all right.

So I feel that my heart,
after giving more time

to other things, it's
still working very hard

or beating very hard
for motor racing,

and as I have not
driven for two years,

my personal challenge is to see

where I would end up coming
back into mod racing,

and that's what I'm going to do.

- The fame is a bit
weird because I remember

when I was a kid in
Ibiza, especially,

my father liked his routine.

When he was here, he took us
in the morning, in the car,

drive to Santa Eularia.

He likes his coffee
(laughing) in the morning.

He goes to the newspaper shop,

gets his newspapers
and magazine,

and there was not one
day when we sat sitting

at the coffee shop
in Santa Eularia

where people are not coming
and asking for autograph.

- He was so easygoing,
like nobody else,

and easy to understand,

easy to look through,
you know what I mean?

There was no mystery.

He was no bullshit.

- Marlene, his mother,
used to talk about Niki.

She used to say.

And in England, you know, Niki
is a English, a girl's name,

Niki, so I was like, "Okay."

This sounds so made
up, but it's not.

And I used to say, "Who's that?

Is that, you know,
is it the sister?

Is it the?"

And she was, "Niki,
the kid's father,"

and then she called him.

We'd had a few wines,
and she called him,

and I spoke to
Nikki on the phone,

and then Mathias was in bed,

and I went up to Mathias,
and I said, "Ah, I spoke

to your father on the phone."

Yeah, then I said, "You
know, what does your dad do?

Why is it?" You know.

And he said, "Ask your
father who Niki Lauda is."

I said, "Why would my father
know who Niki Lauda is?"

Like, "Why would he know
who your dad is, why?"

And I did ask my dad,
and he was screaming

down the phone for
about half an hour

when I said I was going
out with Niki Lauda's son,

and yeah, my dad was
quite excited about it.

- Niki was unique because he
started being a businessman

since very young, exactly
what his grandfather was at.

He would love to see him
in a commercial papers

and not in the sports papers.

At the end, he was in both,
(laughs) you know? (laughs)

(upbeat music)

- [Narrator] Lauda raced
with Ferrari for three years,

securing two world
titles in '75 and '77.

He suffered horrific injuries
from his crash in Germany,

but returned to racing
just six weeks later.

After retiring in 1979, he made
a shocking comeback in 1982

for Ferrari's biggest
rivals, McLaren.

He raced dominantly for McLaren,

winning his third
world title in 1984.

He continued his career
in an executive position,

helping to sign now seven-time
world champion Lewis Hamilton

to Mercedes AMG.

- In growing up, yeah,
it was a mixed journey.

I was born in Salzburg,
but then straightaway,

my parents moved
to Ibiza, in Spain,

so from Austria, we
came straight to Ibiza,

my brother Lukas and me.

It was fantastic.

The memories are
just really nice.

I was outside. I was
playing in the mud.

BMX bikes, going
around the house,

and yeah, having a
really free spirit life,

easy life, yeah,
great, great memories.

- So Mathias, they'd
had a house here

since Mathias was born.

So Marlene first came over here,

and then Niki came afterwards,

and then Mathias, since
he was two years old,

he went to school here
till he was about six.

Then they went back to Salzburg.

- The downside
having a famous dad

is that he cannot spend so
much time with the family

because he's busy, and if
you want achieve the stuff

that my dad achieved,
it's so high, you know,

and you cannot be the
perfect dad at home every day

and achieve everything
they achieved,

being a three-time
Formula 1 world champion,

running two airlines,
running two Formula 1 teams.

I mean, it's impossible.

However, he wasn't
around too much,

but when he was around, he
was always very present.

We had a lotta fun,
and it was great.

It's not like they missed
out too much from him

because yeah, he was there.

He called us every
day, but he was not

at home every day for dinner.

- Mathias and his
father, were they close?

Yes, as close, I think,
as a father and son can be

that live in different
areas of the world.

When Niki was with
Mercedes for the Formula 1,

he would go and spend
the weekend with him

and watch the
Formula 1 with him.

They saw each other a
lot when they could.

Niki had a house here.

I mean, he's always
had the house,

even though he didn't share
the old house with Marlene.

He's always had a house
here, so he always came.

They would fly over
on the weekend,

and Mathias would go and
spend the weekend with him.

- I tell you, they had
a really lucky life.

I hope they see it
from the same side,

that they were
really lucky people.

- If you knew James, if
you saw Freddie walking

through the paddock,
you'd say James was back.

- [Jo] There is a
fearlessness in Freddie

that James probably had as well.

- What do I like about racing?

I like the racing.

I like driving fast cars.

I like driving cars
with downforce.

So I prefer single-seaters
and prototypes to GT's

'cause they're more
cornering speed,

and you can brake later,
as simple as that.

- Freddie can get in
any car and be quick,

whether he's had
practice or not.

Freddie started Formula
4 when I knew him.

Freddie did very well initially,

but one of the big things with
Freddie was mental pressure.

I think it's the expectation
to be as good as his dad

first time round played
a big part in his racing.

But if you look where
Freddie was then

and to where he is now,
he's come a long, long way.

- James deciding
to go into racing

was really just
quite a sudden thing,

and once he'd decided that's
what he was going to do,

I think my parents
were pretty horrified

about the whole thing,
and it wasn't something

that anybody had
any experience of.

The family weren't
really motor racing fans.

So I'm not sure they
tried to put him off,

but they certainly didn't
support him with it.

- I mean, I've always been
inspired by his determination.

My, perhaps, actually, you know,
I've had a checkered career

like he had in terms of,
you know, lack of finance

and lack of sponsors,
and I think maybe,

had he not persevered
and succeeded,

maybe I would've thrown
in the towel as well

and thought this is
just unrealistic.

I can't do this.

But, you know, he
didn't do that,

so maybe that's given
me some inspiration,

well, certainly
given me inspiration,

but maybe it's had a
significant influence.

(driving rock music)

- I was a young teenager,
and I just found it all

rather kind of overwhelming
and strange, really,

and I'd go round
and be introduced as
James Hunt's sister

because he was completely
in the limelight,

and I didn't really
like that. (laughs)

- During the '76 season, there
was a lot of drama going on,

and the "Rush" movie
failed to capture

a lot of those important parts,

and when I questioned
Ron about this.

"Why did you differ
from the truth?

Why did you put
certain parts out

and add bits in which
just did not happen?"

He said, "Well, because
the truth was too awesome.

People just wouldn't
believe it."

- [Adam] Hunt started
his rockstar F1 career

with Hesketh, providing
them their first and only

ever F1 victory.

After impressing at
Hesketh for three years,

he secured a position with
top racing team McLaren.

Staggeringly, in just his
first season with McLaren,

Hunt overcame the
legendary Niki Lauda

to claim the World Championship.

In '79, he decided to retire
from the track but would stay

in the racing world as a
commentator for the BBC.

- Freddie's a very
sensitive person,

and I think has

really, really struggled

with not having his dad around,

although he's done
a lot of things

that have reflected his dad.

(gentle music)

- In terms of attention
from any media,

I never had any media attention.

I'd never interviewed once.

I think the first
interview I did

was when I first entered
polo professionally.

I was playing
professional tournaments,

and it was just a
local newspaper.

I was just an interesting
little article

they could fill out the
columns with, you know,

as James Hunt's son is now
playing at the local club.

(gentle music)

- Well, the polo days,
when I did first meet Sarah

and Freddie, it was
quite an eye-opener

because Freddie, at that stage,

was a little bit out of control,

and I was put in charge of
managing this polo team,

which I was struggling
a little bit,

so I had to draft in my
husband to come and take over

and try and control
Freddie. (laughs)

- My mother and I
sat down and realized

that polo wasn't looking
good because my horses

were old and knackered,
and we didn't have

100-plus grand to replace
them the following season.

I went into town that
evening to rent a movie,

and I went past the
pub, and I thought,

well, I could sneak
in for a quick bite.

And I bumped into a friend
who's a polo player,

and he was going to the
Goodwood Festival of Speed

the next day, so he
invited me along.

And his girlfriend at
the time was Jodie Kidd,

a model and semi-professional
racing driver,

and she said, "Freddie, would
you like to drive the car?"

And it was a Maserati
GT4, I believe.

And of course, naturally, I
said, "Yes, I'd love too,"

but it was not legal
in terms I didn't have

a racing license, and no one,

we didn't tell Goodwood
what I was doing.

I was just in her
helmet, her suit,

and off I went up the hill.

I had a Maserati person next
to me in the passenger seat,

make sure I didn't
do anything stupid,

and I thought this is wonderful.

This is great fun.

I mean, the power of that,

I'd never experienced
power before.

Andrea, my friend, who
was an ex-racing driver

turned polo player,
Argentine fellow,

he said, "Fred, look, you're
not a bad polo player,

but you don't have a big
farm to breed horses,

and you don't have
any money behind you,

so if I was you, I'd stop
playing polo and go racing.

With your name, if you like
it, and if you're good at it,

then you can make a career."

So I thought, well, that sounds
like a good idea. (laughs)

So I rang my uncle
Dave, and I said, "Dave,

I think I wanna be
a racing driver,"

and he said, "Ring me back
in a week if you're serious."

A few days later, I rang him
back, and I said, "I'm serious.

The horse is on the market.

I wanna be a racing
driver. What do I do?"

And that's how I started.

- Yeah, my beginning
of racing was not easy.

It was tough for me because
as a kid, I love racing.

I love watching Formula 1, and
I was really into Formula 1

and knew all the statistics
from the '80s, '90s,

beginning of 2000s.

I was really into
racing, into Formula 1,

and I always wanted
to race as a kid,

and my dad was
always against it,

and he allowed us to race
in motocross with bikes,

but not with go-karts,
and motocross

is much more the interest
than racing with go-karts.

But then I started racing

without planning
it, just happened.

I did my driving lessons,

and I had my first car. (laughs)

And I just, I could feel it.

I couldn't go slow,
and I really enjoyed

going fast on the roads,
so that wasn't very smart.

So I had a couple of
accidents in Barcelona,

and then I finished my school,

and I said to my
brother, "Come on,

I just wanna try once
a car on the racetrack,

not the ones on the
road, and why you

don't organize something
and you become my manager?"

And I started racing.

So my brother
organized me a test

in Czech Republic, in Brno.

I was quite
competitive for someone

that had no experience at all.

And then we had to
confess to my dad.

So that was quite hard.

So we went to Vienna.

My brother did the talking.

We said, "Look, Mathias want
to become a racecar driver.

(laughing) I'm gonna
be his manager."

And my father said,
"You're idiots.

Mathias is already 21 years old.

That's impossible. Like, what
are you guys talking about?"

And then I said, "Yeah,
but I did a test,

and it was quite okay,"
and he said, "Okay."

At that time, my dad was
the boss of Jaguar racing

in Formula 1, and they had
a Formula 3 junior team.

And he called Trevor
Carlin, my dad,

and said, "Look, my son
wants to start racing,

but he's 21, he has no
experience, and he's crazy.

So I want that he is
testing for your team,

and you decide if he
is a talent or not."

So it was quite
a lot of pressure

because jumping from a
couple of touring cars

in Czech Republic
to a Formula 3 car.

Formula 3, it's really high
downforce car, quite fast.

So I went to England.

We did a test, and the
test was really great.

My lap times were
good, and Trevor Carlin

said, "Yeah, thumbs up.

He has the talent.
He has the speed."

So from that day on, I got
the blessing from my dad,

and I'm free to go.

- In 2014, when I
signed up Freddie Hunt

and Mathias Lauda
to race for my team,

I realize I'm recreating
motorsport history.

Especially after
watching the film "Rush,"

I couldn't let go
of what I was doing,

and I had to let the world know
how this can be done again.

I never knew how they were
when I signed them on,

but I realized they are exactly
the same as their fathers,

character and voicing
and everything.

- I remember when
I got a phone call.

That year, actually, I was
struggling a bit in racing

because I just finished my
contract in GT1 with BMW,

and I didn't have a
program for the next year,

and I had a phone call from
an Indian guy called Jose,

and he asked me if I wanted
to race with Freddie Hunt

in the MF series
in the Middle East,

and that time, I was,
I don't know, maybe 34.

That championship is
more for junior drivers.

It was a Formula 3 chassis,

and I said, "Look, I didn't
drive formula cars for long.

For long time, I did
touring cars, GT cars,

but this is more for,
yeah, for kids, right?"

But I always like a challenge,

and I said, "Look, great,
yeah, I gonna do it."

So I flew to Qatar, and
straight from Ibiza to Qatar,

and I jump in the car, and
it was, yeah, so much fun.

- Now the racing
scene I did with Jose,

I got a call from James Croft,

a friend that I met
way back in Formula 4,

and he said, "I've got
an opportunity for you."

He knew Jose, not sure how,

and Jose had this great
idea to put Mathias and I

in a team together and
have us race together

and have them film it.

So that's how this
whole thing started,

and that was,
yeah, it was great,

but I wasn't competitive.

(racecars zooming)

- Freddie in the
meanwhile was setting

such fastest time
in certain sectors,

like if you could put one lap
of his in different sectors

from different laps, he
is certainly the quickest,

but he couldn't
hold it together.

(racecar zooming)

- So the championship
consists of three rounds,

you know, four races in
each round, so 12 races.

The first was in Qatar.

The second was Bahrain, and
the third was Chennai in India.

There was a lotta
room for improvement,

my own consistency.

I think my own self-confidence
wasn't quite there.

I did a 6-2.
- No, you did a 6-7.

- 6-7.
- And quickest here's a 5-4.

- Well, that's all right.

- No, it's not.

Why didn't you do a 5-4?
- Well, it is,

'cause I haven't done a lap yet.

What, I'm still
learning the track.

- All right, we'll
let you off, then.

- [Freddie] These fucking
horrible circuits.

Well, it's not, but it is.
- Difficult, it's difficult.

- Impulsive, I would say.

In the racecar, I think he's
sometimes pushing too hard,

and sometimes, he
overdrives the car,

and he's very passionate
and emotional in the car,

and I think I'm in
a car more cool,

more calculated, and I
try not to do mistakes.

And he likes to go
sometimes over the limit,

but he has speed.

He has talent, for
sure, but yeah,

he needs to control
himself a little bit.

- I think Freddie's
racing career,

it's a lot of pressure
with his name.

He was always expected to
win any race quite naturally.

I think there was
always a lot of pressure

at every race I've
bene to with him.

- Where's lauda, eh?
- Just in through, yeah.

- Mathias' character
was very focused.

He came, he met me, and he said,

"Okay, this is what I'll do.

I've not been in a single
seat for quite some time,

so I'm gonna give my best."

He sat with the
engineers, set up the car.

In fact, you wouldn't
believe he even went back.

After setting up the
car, he covered his car

and went back and slept
on his racing suit.

I was shocked, and half
an hour before the race,

he gets up, stretches,
and goes to races.

- Well, Mathias has
his feet on the ground

because he's always had
to work for everything.

He got into racing by himself.

His father didn't want
him to, so he worked.

He worked, and he got where
he is today through working,

you know, which is something
I don't think people realize.

People just think,
"Ah, you know,

'cause his father's who he is,

he didn't have to
work for anything."

But you know, as
you know in racing

or in life in general,
(laughs) it's hard.

If you can't do it,
you can't do it.

So he's really worked
hard. He's trained hard.

He's fought hard to get
sponsors, to get into teams.

- To be back in a formula car
and with a lot of young guys

like Mazepin was racing
there, for example.

He's now Formula 1, and a
couple of really fast kids,

and I was the old
guy, and Freddie too.

And it was great,
yeah, and the highlight

was I could win the
last race in Bahrain.

And it was a coincidence
because we were

on the side event from WEC,

from World Endurance
Championship,

and when I walked
back from the podium,

I walked through
the WEC paddock,

and I saw my old
friend Pedro Lamy.

I used to share a car with
him at Nuerburgring, 24.

And he said, "Can I come in?"

And then he said,
"Look, by the way,

actually, we're looking
for a new teammate

for next year for
WEC at Aston Martin,"

and said, "Are you free?"

I said, "Yes, for
sure I'm free."

So this is the first time
that I got in contact

with Aston Marton.

- He's very calm.
He's very cool.

He's very collected, and he
doesn't seem to worry too much,

and he's quite inspirational.

I think maybe similar
to his father.

I think maybe that's
what Dad saw in Niki.

(racecars zooming)

- In 2014 season, Freddie
was basically going

through a bad time.

He had just lost his
mother that year,

and plus, he had not
raced for some time,

so he was very erratic.

The comparison was that
one was very focused.

The other was erratic, but
both were quick and fast

and extremely talented,
if you ask me,

and they're unbelievably
good, both of them.

(gentle music)

- [Adam] Just a few weeks
before the season started,

Freddie lost his
mother to cancer,

causing him to miss
vital pre-season testing.

(gentle music)

- Yeah, the love I felt
from both of my parents

was, you know, it's
unquestionable.

It's stronger than
anything can be.

I never questioned that at
all, never questioned that.

(gentle music)

- So Sarah was ill
for quite some time.

There were moments where she
suddenly got a lot better,

but then I think we
saw her on a Sunday,

and by the Tuesday,
she had passed.

Sarah was Freddie's rock.

When Freddie
stepped out of line,

Sarah was the one
that, you know,

kicked his ass back into gear.

I think losing
Sarah, for Freddie,

was just a huge, it's
life-changing, isn't it,

somebody losing their parents?

- She was very great
fun, very wacky.

Never a dull moment
in her company.

And she was very, very full-on,

but in a really nice sorta way.

She was a lovely person.

(gentle music)

- So Freddie's character
was very similar

to what I have seen of James
Hunt's character in the film

and what I've read about him.

So he's exactly the same.

Everything was so similar,
and you see the looks

are the same, that flirty
and naughty boy he was

when I met him in 2014.

- I was quite wild
when I was younger,

and I could let
myself be wild now,

but it, you know, the
aftermath is too painful, so.

And anything could go wrong,

(laughing) so I try and
be a little bit more,

a little bit more controlled.

- Going back, Freddie,
I don't think,

had many coping mechanisms.

I don't think he
knew how to deal

with everything that
was in front of him.

- Well, he punched
him did he? (laughs)

Just like his dad.

- 2014 was a
difficult year for me

'cause I had just
lost my mother,

and, you know, as I said before,

motorsport, like most sports,
is a very much mental game,

and if your head's not there,

you're never gonna
deliver your potential,

and so I didn't.

I did have a couple of
moments of brilliance.

Again, I don't like to
call myself brilliant,

but purple laps and when
it was going really well.

- Yeah, first time
when I met Freddie,

it was actually in 2014.

I met him once before,
but just there, that's it.

Talking five, 10 minutes.

And straightaway, yeah,
he's a really nice guy.

He's very sympathetic,
very open,

a good sense of
humor, and we both,

yeah, we get along really well.

We had lots of fun at
the five races we did

in the Middle East, and yeah,

after the race, we
had some good fun.

Went out together,
had a couple of beers,

and he's just a really nice guy.

- Mathias and I first met
in, I think it was 2009

at Hockenheim, when I was racing
in the ADAC Formel Masters,

which is like a sort of,
similar to a Formula Renault.

That was that, and that's when
I first met Niki properly.

The first thing he said to me
on the grid was, (snickers)

gets me every time when
I think about this one.

It was, "I love your
father," he said,

and before I'd even
reached his hand.

(solemn music)

- [Niki] So who's the
quicker one, you or Mathias?

- He appears to be,
but I was quicker

in the last run in Qatar.

I had the pace.

I just need to figure,

I need to focus, and I need
to do it lap after lap.

I can do it one lap.

I need to do it lap after lap,

and then in the race as well,

so that's what I need to build.

- So concentration.

Don't worry about which
position, whatever happens,

and improve the driving.

Don't worry about if
you finish 17th, 34th,

most pit stop,
forward, backwards.

You only have to
concentrate on the job.

Because if you

So this time, speed up
slowly, get the car set up,

and then do it, and take only
when you feel comfortable,

and then you get the stability.

That's the most important.

Get the emotions out.

- A lot of good
advice Niki did give

on how to concentrate on his job

and how to be focused and
throw your emotions away

and consider this as a job.

So actually, that
did wake up Freddie.

He was a very different person
in racing after meeting Niki,

and in the next race in Chennai,

he really performed
well, if you ask me.

and he's in fucking

Look at his car when he
comes across, rear wing.

- Yeah, he was emotional,
but not in the car.

I mean, he was emotional
when he was upset,

but he had the speed
and the performance.

I mean, don't worry.

He knew what he was doing,

especially in '76 when
that shitty McLaren

suddenly started to work.

In the second half
of the season,

he had the better car, and
he was driving outstanding.

He really got me because he
was better in the second part,

even with my advantage
from the beginning

of the car performance
or the accident,

where I lost three races,
but he was quicker in '76.

I couldn't beat
him, to be honest,

with or without the accident.

This is the key thing
to his championship.

but he's quick.

me, it's sports in general.

I'm a very competitive person,
but not always about winning.

It's just sports.

When it's racing, I get
really obsessed about racing.

I want to do well, but the
same, I can also take over

in surfing or in cycling.

I get really obsessed
or passionate in sports,

and if I like something,
then it's all or nothing, so.

- He has a road bike, and
he has a mountain bike,

and all the other
bikes in between,

and he spends about
four hours every day.

He has a trainer, and
he does intervals,

or he does road bikes, or
he does mountain biking.

He also put something
in the pool to build up

his upper body strength,
and then he'll do,

a couple of times a week,
he's doing HIIT training

with a friend of his
who's a personal trainer,

so he'll to that with them.

He'll do HIIT training with
him and another friend.

- I don't know, I'm always
been that very competitive,

since kids, and if I like
something, I get competitive,

but I don't get too extreme.

I don't get too
upset if I don't win.

It's not like that, but
I just love to compete.

Training outdoors, for
me, it's every day.

If there's one day
where I cannot train,

it's something is missing in me,

so I need to be
out all the time,

and always it's on the bicycle,

or is it surfing, or is it
going for a swim in the ocean?

I always need to
be out every day.

- Training is like
generally cardio, you know,

once a day, whether it
be swimming or a jog,

and then weight training

or just some upper
body strength training.

Might be just at
home on the floor

just doing situps, pressups,
pullups, et cetera,

or I'll go to the gym and do
some weight training there.

That's pretty straightforward.

I'm sure if I was a
proper Formula 1 trainer,

he would say, "It's not
that straightforward,

and you're not doing it right,"

but (laughs) I keep
myself fit as possible,

and most of the time, I'm
pretty fit in the car.

- Freddie's had lots of
challenges for his life.

Obviously losing
James, losing his mom,

this whole expectation
for Freddie

to just do well at everything,

especially when it
comes to racing,

but one of the reasons
I love Freddie so much

is he just gets on, you
know, gets in the zone,

and he gets things done, so.

- I started, and I'd
say really got into it,

got into the swing of it, it
was during the first lockdown.

Course, I had plenty
of time on my hands,

as we all did, and I was
meditating twice a day,

and after, it took
a while to calm the,

quiet the monkey mind,
the noise in one's head,

and well, there's
plenty of that in mine.

Racing is a very mental thing,

and as I said, that's
what really screwed me up

in the early years,
and it kinda still

is screwing me up now.

I think it can screw any
driver, or not just racing,

any athlete, so to be able
to calm one's mind down

to a state of, not
that you don't care,

but you don't care too much.

That's when you can
really perform well.

For example, playing
pool with a friend,

I could beat this friend
five times in a row.

Soon as you put a tenner
on it, I'll lose. (laughs)

'Cause it means something.

So it's the ability to, what
meditation helps me to do

is to take away that pressure
I put on myself, basically.

- I don't know what to expect
next week in Donington.

Is Freddie gonna win or me?

I haven't been in a racecar
for more than a year now.

It's the longest time in my life

that I didn't drove a racecar.

I raced my bikes a lot in
races, so I'm still competitive.

I still wanna, every time
when I put my helmet on,

and I go in the racecar, and
I start at the racetrack,

you get competitive, and you
just think about lap times.

I think most racecar
drivers are the same,

so this will never change.

And for me, actually,
I'm not there

just to beat
Freddie or whatever.

I just wanna enjoy
and have a good time,

and anyway, I know myself,
that once I'm in there,

I will start to get
very competitive.

- Yeah, this race
to me is probably

among the most important
I've done so far,

and I really do wanna beat
Mathias 'cause, you know,

he's beaten me last time,
and I'm pretty confident

I'm faster, and you know, if
you take away all the crap,

and if you were to
leave just the talent,

I think I've got more,

Donington this weekend

has already made its
way around the paddock,

with fellow drivers eager to
drop by the Revolution tent

to meet them.

that you see very often, is it?

I mean, those two names
synonymous with motorsport

and history particularly,
especially their parents

on track, you know.

For them both, it must be
a real special experience,

and I think for their
families as well,

it would be a very cool
experience for them,

to see them both racing again.

and Mathias has arrived early
to complete his seat fitting

for the all-important
practice sessions later today.

a proper seat fit,

so when you go
forward in your seat,

as well as the most important,

say we get the pedals
closer 'cause we need

to use the brakes in total,

and then we work on

be the first time

either of them have
driven these cars,

but they'll be expected
to go toe-to-toe

with the other
drivers on the track

who have been racing
in them all season.

It's a tall order even for
the likes of Hunt and Lauda.

- Not as much grip as I
was hoping, in general.

I think, so I'm just, you know,

the last sort of
downforce car I've driven

was an LMP3 with a lot
more, well, bigger tires

and more air, so I
guess, but the power,

you know, it gets a
powerful weight right there,

and it's a bit all right,

but it's a bloody cold track,

so the times never
really came in properly.

And also so much traffic.

I mean, it's ridiculous
they let us out

with blooming chicane.

It's dangerous for everyone,
but you know, this is England,

and they said,
"Well, let's do it."

They like doing that, so
there's no point complaining.

Same for everyone.

But yeah, on the whole,
it's all right, I suppose.

where you can drive
the car really fast,

so it's not too easy
to be always in there.

so you gotta judge it.

through practice at Donington,

and so far, there still
appears to be a significant gap

between Lauda and Hunt.

After returning from the
third practice session,

Freddie is still off the pace,

but he's now convinced
it's not his driving.

After closer
examination of the data,

he discovers that there is
indeed a problem with the car.

It's lacking straightline speed.

- Yeah, so that last session,
I was about four seconds off.

No, more, yeah, about
four seconds off,

when I knew I shouldn't
be four seconds off,

maybe one or two.

So luckily, we found on the
data that there is a problem.

We're still not 100%
sure what it is,

but we assume it's the exhaust,

so they've had to put these
silencers on the exhaust

because we have noise
restriction today,

and this is the result: they
can't handle the back pressure,

and so that blows.
(car part rattling)

Though on this one, the
last one, it didn't blow,

but it was bulging, so
too much back pressure,

and the engine can't breathe
properly, something like that.

I'm not a mechanic,
but basically,

well, that's what they
think the problem is,

but we can see it
clearly on the data

that, you know, his speed trace,

well, my speed trace goes there.

His goes there. (laughs)

Yeah, when we're on the
power at the same time.

So yeah, and it's great,
isn't it? (laughs)

Try and remain positive.

so far quite good.

I think I'm quite competitive,

but I haven't looked
so much around

what the other guys are doing.

I just focus on myself to
improve the car a little bit,

that I can go a

Today, I think the
paper was really good.

Every session, I was
quickest, so yeah,

the goal tomorrow is to

We've identified that
there was a problem,

so it wasn't, you
know, my bad driving.

There's a couple of corners
which I'm still struggling

a little bit with
setup, but hopefully,

superbly quick,

Mathias in even just one

of the two races, it would mean.

It'd be proof to myself
that I can deliver,

you know what I mean?

I've had so many opportunity
and fucked it up so many times

through whatever reason,
mostly my own fault,

to retire from the sport

having never been able to
deliver what I can truly do,

which a lotta people
out there, you know,

who've seen me testing,
seen the good parts of me,

who know the truth.

They know what I am capable of,

but whether I can actually
deliver that performance

when it matters, that's the key.

I think his advice to
me would be something

along the lines of, "Go steady.

a few short hours,

while the drivers prepare
themselves mentally

for the challenge ahead.

With two races to compete in,

they'll both be hoping to set

but it's dry initially,

so a great bit of time

it looks as though
Hunt has pole position.

An amazing show of talent
and speed in qualifying

meant he had the fastest
lap time in his class,

even outqualifying some
of the more powerful cars.

Could today be the day that Hunt

finally shows the world
what he's capable of?

Meanwhile, Mathias is back
at the Revolution tent,

as they assess where
he finished overall.

- Eh, it wasn't great
for me, to be honest.

I did too many mistakes,
so it was my first run

with the new tires, so I
didn't know what to expect.

That took a long
time to come in.

Especially beginning, I had
a little spin in my first.

That was cold tires,
little bit annoying,

but then I kept
improving all the time,

and in my last lap,
I thought, okay,

now, when the fuel came down,

it felt better and
better and better.

I want to really push
hard on the last lap,

and I had a spin in turn
one, so it wasn't great,

but I think that the lap
time, though better yesterday,

was a big step
with the new tire.

So it wasn't bad.

of the track, and you're
allowed two wheels,

half a car off it, but if
you have all four wheels

over the white lines,
that's not allowed.

That's exceeding track limits,
so that's what we've done.

But fortunately, that's quite
a lot of us who did that,

but instead of
disqualifying everyone,

they're just giving
us all a warning.

I think that's what's
happened, but I'm not sure.

But yeah, we're very
lucky to get away with it.

But in the race, they won't
be so lenient, I'm sure,

so we need to be very
precise in the race.

that both Hunt and Lauda
exceeded track limits

on various occasions
through qualifying.

Fortunately, they have
been given a warning

rather than any penalties
or disqualifications,

which is great news.

Further to this, Freddie
has been given the news

that his fastest lap is only
counted towards the first race.

The driver who set
the second fastest lap

is awarded pole for race two,
which happens to be Mathias.

- I was a bit annoyed about that

for the second race qualifying

'cause I didn't realize we
had to do two qualifying times

because I kept on,
when I was down,

I kept on lifting off to save
the tires for the next lap,

and had I just pushed,
I could've gotten
P2, but I'm in P3

for the second race, but
anyway, it is what it is.

- [Narrator] And with that
news, it's time to get racing.

Freddie has pole position
for the first race,

which gives him
the advantage here,

but Mathias has looked
quick all weekend

and is likely to challenge

for Freddie's pole
position quickly.

The weeks of physical
and mental training

have led up to this point.

It's finally time to
see Hunt versus Lauda,

racing head to head once more.

(dramatic music)

- [Commentator] Welcome,
everyone, to race one

here at Donington Park of
the Sports Prototype Cup.

We look at the lineup,
and we're focusing today

on the Revolution A-One class.

Freddie Hunt and Mathias
Lauda lead the field

in first and second,
Sir Chris Hoy is third.

Here's Marcello Marateotto
in the faster class

just behind Lauda, and
he slides into the sun.

Lauda, Lauda's off!
Lauda, he's in the gravel.

Well, yeah, you see
from Lauda's expression,

they're not happy at
all with the Italian

who punted him off
into the gravel,

and the Italian
got away with it.

He's still circulating, and
they brought out the course car.

Well, they had to do that.

Everyone will back
up behind that

as they work on the
front of the Lauda car.

Doesn't seem any damage, just
beached in the gravel there,

everyone sweeping
round the traditional

Donington Park circuit here.

Crane is brought into action,

everybody keeping a
better tire temperature,

as Lauda is able to
drive out of there

with the help of the marshals.

Well done for that.

- I think he'll stay out there.

He's gotta be a fan favorite.

He's got to at least
un-lap himself.

(dramatic music) - So
off and up running again.

Freddie Hunt is in the lead.

Behind a couple
of the faster cars

as we go into spinner now,

and that is Graham Ridgeway,

who turns it around, and
luckily, everybody missed him.

Hunt out in first
place in the class.

Chris Hoy is second.

Remember Hoy is fighting
to win the overall champion

in this race, but
it is Freddie Hunt

comfortably pulling away.

A fastest lap from Freddie Hunt,

and he's constantly
pulling away now,

putting in some great lap
times in the 20-minute race.

Well, what a shame we
didn't see the two rivals,

Lauda and Hunt, head
to head this time

as the checkered flag falls,
and it's Hunt who wins.

And the number 11 then
takes the checkered flag.

Number 11, of course,
raced by his father, James.

And superb victory by the
second-generation driver here.

Freddie Hunt wins,
takes the fastest lap.

So Chris Hoy finishes
in second place,

with Lauda, of
course, after that,

with a gravel
experience further back.

And let's just have
confirmation of the result.

Hunt, Sir Chris
Hoy, Peter Brookes,

and Lauda actually
finishing in fourth place.

Freddie, that wasn't
the race everybody

was looking forward
to, of course,

but it was your
win in the class.

How was it for you?

- Yeah, a bit disappointing
that Mathias got,

you know, ended
up in the gravel.

Not sure exactly what happened,

but I believe there was
contact with another car.

But yeah, at least, I
managed to bring it home

and claim victory, so I
can't complain too much.

It's just a shame
it wasn't a battle.

- I mean, it's in
your racing spirit.

A win's a win, isn't it?

Yeah, it was behind
you, a bit of a clip

from behind, yeah,
from Montecerro.

So how aware are you of
what's going on behind you,

or are you just looking forward?

- Well, I kept an
eye on my mirrors.

I mean, before he had that,
I opened up a nice gap.

I was a good few seconds
up the road then,

so I don't know what happened
to him at the beginning.

But so I was already
pretty calm then.

I thought, right, even if
he's a little bit quicker

than me, I should be able to,
you know, maintain the gap,

or, you know, I should be
able to stay in front of him,

so I had that edge, which
I was pleased about.

So yeah, but then, you
know, safety came out,

and I thought,
"Well, who's that?"

And I looked in my mirror, and
I couldn't see him anymore,

thought, "Oh, no."

So yeah, shame, really.

- But one more race to come.

So people really want to
see you going head to head,

but with that gap you
opened up early on,

are you confident
at a race two now?

- Well, I don't
know what happened

during the first
corner, you know.

He's a more experienced driver.

He is quick, and he
is very consistent.

He's got a very cool head,
so he's not going to be easy

to beat at all, and
I'm starting behind him

on the next one.

I'm starting P3
for the next race

because I didn't read the
small print in the briefing.

I didn't realize I
had to put two laps

on the sounding quali, so yeah,

so starting P3
for the next race,

and yeah, I need to,
but to be honest,

I'm more comfortable
when I'm chasing.

I'm better chaser
than defending,

so maybe I can, you know.

- Freddie, we can't
wait to see it.

- Yeah, happy for

A shame that I couldn't
have a battle with him

because I was right behind him.

Till the guy put me in the
gravel, so yeah, good for him,

and hopefully, we'll
have a second clean race.

Now, we need to fix the
car, like the steering

was a bit bent, so
we finished the race,

but wasn't too much fun,
and the car was really bad,

but hopefully, we can
fix it, and then yeah,

we have another one,
another shot, last one.

- Yeah, it was a
great race for me,

a bit lucky, if
I'm honest, yeah.

I saw Mathias getting taken out,

and I had the second
lap or first lap

went into chicane,
managed to avoid that,

and I just kinda rode,
I drove my own race

and stayed outta trouble,
defended a little bit

against the guys
in the other class

that were in faster
cars, but yeah,

really happy to finish P4 of
row and then second in class.

So yeah, it was nice
to share a podium,

an honor to share a podium
with a Hunt on top step.

- Second place, Sir Chris Hoy.

(spectators applauding)

- Oh, (laughs) that's all right.

race one has reached
its conclusion.

Freddie comfortably
won his class

with a fantastically
fast and skillful drive,

gaining nearly 15 seconds
on his fellow driver,

Sir Chris Hoy, in second.

Unfortunately, Mathias,
through no fault of his own,

was shunted by another driver,

causing him to spin out in
the early stages of the race,

and although he decided to
stay out and fight back,

he was ultimately
too far back to try

and mount a chase on
the other drivers.

Fortunately, the boys have
a second and final race

to take part in, this time
with Lauda in pole position.

As the cars are signed
off and the boys

have prepped themselves, we
delve straight into the second

and final race for what
is hopefully the battle

we've all been waiting
for, Hunt versus Lauda.

- [Commentator] Well, the
pace car lights are on.

This is a rolling start.

First, they're going
to do one sighting lap

around the 2 1/2-mile
Donington Park circuit here.

And we're on board
with Freddie Hunt.

Just caught a glimpse
of his crash helmet,

reflects the colors
of Wellington School,

where, of course, his
father James went.

Lauda, of course, with the
Red Bull colors on his helmet.

Well, they're all in these
Revolution A-One cars,

380 break horsepower,
3.7-litre Ford motors

will propel them now
towards Redgate Corner

as the lights switch to green.
(racecars buzzing)

These cars will try and
squeeze through there

without any problems at
all, and there's Dave Watson

is on the outside
and into the gravel,

but he gets back on track.

He was trying to pass
Freddie Hunt there,

so some early act.

On board now with Freddie Hunt,

and he'll be wanting to beat

his son of speed
rival, Mathias Lauda.

Lauda, of course, with much
more experience of the two,

former world champion
in the GTE Am category

for Aston Martin racing.

Well, great battles here.

Watch the gray car.

That's in the fast class.

That's the Italian, Marateotto,

and he's got a bit more
power and slips past Lauda.

We are on board again with
young Freddie Hunt here,

and Freddie Hunt lining
up to pass Lauda.

Lauda in the number one car.

They're almost three abreast.

Great action, and bang!

Lauda into the Italian.

Hunt nicks past and
gets in front of Lauda,

but it's still racing
wheel to wheel here

as Lauda tries to
have the inside,

but he just tags
Hunt, goodness me,

and the two sons of speed
here at the last corner

at Donington Park,
and there's chaos,

and the two are stranded
in the middle of the track.

And of course, they
gotta find reverse,

never easy on a racing car.

As the rest of the field go by,

they try to sort themselves
out in these Ford's prototypes,

very lightweight
cars, and there,

Lauda not happy at all.

Hunt finally sorted out.

He's losing so much time here.

And well, there you see
Lauda drop 15 seconds.

Hunt dropped some 30 seconds,

and he bangs his crash
helmet in frustration here.

Well, Mathias Lauda
really charging on

after that earlier
incident with Freddie Hunt,

and just putting in his
fastest lap of the race so far.

We go on board with him
as he passes the pits,

and trying to grab second
place now from Peter Brookes.

He's in that orange
and blue car there,

and Lauda definitely quicker

through this section
of the track.

Well, he's caught him up already

and really closing in on him.

(racecars zooming)

We're also hearing that
Freddie Hunt, further back,

is putting in some
quick laps as well,

but let's concentrate
on this battle.

Just remember for second
place in the class,

Chris Hoy leading,
goes down the inside.

I don't think he's
gonna make this stick.

Goodman late on the breaks,
perfect overtaking maneuver

from Lauda, and now, he's
gotta catch Chris Hoy,

and there he is
already on his tail,

and look, he's gonna
gain the inside.

He really is on a charge
now, is the Austrian,

and he's gone past Chris Hoy
into the lead of the race.

Well, a lot of terrific
recovery from that incident.

On board then with the
great world champion cyclist

Chris Hoy, a pretty
good racing driver too,

but here is Freddie Hunt.

He is lapping an incredible
five seconds faster

than Sir Chris Hoy.

Well, maybe he can
catch him at that pace.

On board then with
Freddie, look,

and now he's catching
the next rival.

This is Ridgeway, and that
will move him up another place,

and he goes for it, no problem
at all, down the inside.

Nice and clean, hits the
apex, and accelerates out

and moves up, and there
getting his pit signals.

So Freddie Hunt on
an absolute charge.

In front of him Lauda,
Hoy, and Brookes,

but he's going so much
quicker than them.

Well, Hunt closing in on them.

There is Brookes, and there
is Hoy just in front of him.

He's gonna go down past Brookes,

and he goes past Hoy as well!

Incredible move!

Boy, he really has got
the speed here today,

and it's, well, now,
the big question is

can he catch the
leader, Mathias Lauda?

Look at the team
urging Lauda on.

They know that Hunt
is on the charge,

and Lauda has
increased his pace,

but so too has Freddie Hunt.

Well, this could be a battle
right to the checkered flag.

There is Hunt in the
white and red car,

and a lock up there
from Mathias Lauda,

and Hunt really
closing in on him.

Hunt has certainly got Lauda
a whiff of the exhaust.

Well, and he's right
up his tail now!

This is very close, isn't it?

So penultimate lap here
through the hairpin.

There is Freddie Hunt
right in the back now

of Mathias Lauda, and

could be a passing
maneuver here.

No, decides against it.

Just Lauda pretty
good on the brakes,

you have to say.

There's Freddie Hunt.

On to the last lap and Redgate.

Good overtaking place, and
Hunt goes to the inside.

Surely he's gonna get by.

No, Lauda is tucked
in front, goes wide,

but manages to hold his line,

and Freddie Hunt has to
drop behind his rival here.

Two sons of former world
champions dicing it out

as their fathers
did in the past.

This is great stuff
here at Donington Park.

Hunt looking for
a way to get past.

Out of the corner, up the hill,

towards the final turn, and
I don't think Freddie Hunt

can find a way past that,
and there, the checkered flag

is waiting, with Mathias Lauda
just beating Freddie Hunt.

- Well, that was close!

- [Mathias] That was fun, huh?

- [Freddie] That
was fucking great.

- [Mathias] Well, it had
us all tucked together.

the last corner?

- Yeah, yeah.
- It was me.

- Ah, you dick!

- [Freddie] I
didn't even see you.

I didn't know you were were
gonna make a move there.

I didn't even look.

so wide open, and
I just went for it.

- [Freddie] Oh, I didn't
realize you were so close.

Well, I, what was I?

- [Mathias] That
was fun, though.

- [Freddie] I did
a 30.5 in the race.

Man, I was catching you so fast.

- Freddie, have you
got time for us?

- Yeah.

At the start of that
race, we nearly thought,

"Oh, no, not again,"
but you brought it back

and made for some
fantastic entertainment.

- Good, I hope so too.

I mean, I was a man
possessed on that one,

and I went quicker
than qualifying.

I hope I got the
fast lap of the race,

well, of our class, at least.

So yeah, I mean,
I hunted him down.

I didn't think I
was gonna catch him.

He looked, well, he
was half a lap ahead.

- So what actually happened?

On that sort of one of the
early laps on the corners,

we couldn't quite see
it on the TV screens.

What happened? Did
you connect or not?

- Yeah, so last, so first.

Hang on.
- Coming down to Melbourne.

- Melbourne Loop, we're three
abreast, and I had the inside.

I came out on top, and
then going into it,

I didn't think anyone was
gonna make a move on me,

and then suddenly, Mathias
flings it up the inside

and just clipped me.

- Mathias, let's bring
Mathis, and here we. (laughs)

- I had to pay it back
for the one before.

And he just went to the inside.

It was the space,
and you hit me.

- I'm the guy?
- He didn't hit you.

- No, I didn't.
- You hit me

into the other guy.
- Did I?

- Yeah, yeah.
- You actually

turned in on me.
- Yes, yeah. (laughs)

(Mathias and Freddie laughing)

Then I saw a hole
and said, "Okay,

I've gotta try to get you back."

How does that feel?

- It was fun. I enjoyed the lot.

Hard work, but it was fun, yeah.

- I don't know. We're
gonna see maybe.

maybe an endurance
