'Ever since I was a kid, I've been obsessed with the movie Home Alone.'
'It's only the best Christmas film ever made.
Watching Kevin McCallister setting up a bunch of ingenious booby traps
to defeat burglars Harry and Marv was the coolest thing in the world.'
'But there's one big question.
Could the Wet Bandits actually have survived
eye-watering injuries like this in real life?'
'Well, we need answers.'
'So Guz and I have headed to the studio...
..and with help from engineer Zoe...
..we'll be recreating the booby traps from Home Alone,
to find out just how dangerous they really are.'
Kevin, you're dead!
Ah! Oh-ho!
Irreversible damage.
You might die. That hurt.Oh!
'Along the way, we'll play some of our own pranks,
and delve deep into the science of the stunts...'
It's going to excite the atoms.
'..to figure out how we could survive them and actually catch Kevin.
Or at least, this kid, who sort of looks like Kevin.'
Yes!
'And all of Alex Brooker's Christmases have come at once,
cos he's off on a trip of a lifetime to meet the actors...'
I wish your friends lots of luck.
..and stunt men from the film.' Aah!
'Look how happy he is!'
'So if watching two grown men being smacked with paint cans,
getting electrocuted and generally screaming a lot,
all in the name of science, is your sort of thing,
well, merry Christmas, ya filthy animals!'
'This is the unofficial science of Home Alone.'
(BOTH GROAN)
Ooh-ee!
Guz, can you believe Sky have built us our very own...
Home Alone-inspired house?
Ready to be filled with traps.
They could've put a roof on it. Yeah, roof aside, it's beautiful,
and it's got everything we need to achieve our goal.
Which is?To learn how to survive all the traps in Home Alone,
in real life, get through that house,
and catch that smug little brat, Kevin.
I'm sure YOU are going to do brilliantly at that.
Guz!I'll stay here. We are in this together...
or not at all.
Together. Let's do this.
Whoo-hoo-hoo! Wow!
Yes!
Right, now we've got to decide what traps to do.
Obvious one, the flaming door handle. Yes!
And how about that paint tin to the face?
(WHISTLES) Pew! Oh!
Blowtorch to the head in the kitchen. (IMITATES BLOWTORCH)
Hey, I like that one. How about when the geezer's in the basement
and he was getting electrocuted and turned into a skeleton? Brrrrr!
And then, bit of fun at the end... Yes.
..we go down the zipwire.
Yes!
It's just occurred to me, I mean,
we could die doing this. Huh?
We could die doing all... Brooker got to go to Chicago and meet the cast.
This is, without doubt, the best job I've ever had.
In fact, I think it's the best Christmas present I've ever had.
I have been obsessed with Home Alone ever since I was a kid,
and I'm still obsessed with it now.
I spent five days last year building a McCallister house out of Lego.
I've got an artwork of the house in my living room.
And every day, the alarm on my phone is the music from Home Alone.
Literally, I wake up every day thinking of the film,
because it gives me so much joy. I love it so much.
And now, I'm fulfilling a life's ambition by flying out to the States
to visit some of the iconic locations,
meet some of the people involved in making the film,
and learn a little bit more about the stunts and traps
Guz and James are going to be doing back in the studio.
I've had an absolute result. Merry Christmas.
Right, we've figured out what stunts we're going to do from the film.Yes.
Now we've got to figure out how to best them
so we can get that little brat, Kevin.
I want to mash that kid up. I'll mash him up!
(CHUCKLES) But here's the thing.
You and I aren't scientists or engineers.
We don't know how to make any of that safe. That's true.
So look who we brought in. Zoe's here.
So we need to test each trap,
find out what damage it would do in real life,
figure out how science can help us survive it,
then test it out for real at the end of the show.
The fact you even want to try them, is slightly foolhardy.
To do these as you would see them in the film,
is incredibly dangerous.
How dangerous, scale of one to ten? Ten. These are -
Ten?Didn't even have to think about that!
Ten? Straight to ten?
Risk to life, yep. Risk to life, ten?
Those traps are deadly. Where do you want to begin?
Four words - blowtorch to the head.
They're nice seats, but it's very, very old, this cinema.
I think it's going to be a really, really good film.Yeah.
'The blowtorch to the head
is one of the most brutal booby traps in Home Alone,
so how do a bunch of kiddie boffins think you'd survive it?'
You're dead, kid!
(GASPS) This is the best part! (GASPS)
(SHRIEKS)
(BOTH SHRIEK) (SHRIEKS)
(SHRIEKS)
(BOTH SHRIEK) (SHRIEKS)
Ah! Ooh!
His head's on fire! (LAUGHS)
Aaah! Ooh! (SIZZLING)
Oh, it would so hurt. I can't even describe it.
What would you wear,
to protect your head from the fire? He's only wearing a hat,
and that doesn't look like it protected him very much.
A plastic bowl or something? That can, like, melt.
I want to put like a metal helmet on it to protect your head.
I would...
not go in there. 'All useless suggestions!'
'If we're actually going to survive this horrendous contraption,
then first, we need to know what damage it would actually do.'
Ah!START with that? No, definitely.
We've got to know how to be safe with this,
we've got to know how to use a blowtorch,
and for it all to be above board so we survive it.
Shield your eyes, buddy. Hey, whoa!Whoa!
I've got a plan.
I have for you... (GRUNTS)
..something... Oh, my...!
What is that? This is stunt Harry the burglar, complete with hat.
Why's it got a face? It looks disgusting, bruv!
This is what we're going to use for you to begin to see,
what the blowtorch would do in real life.
Will I blowtorch the turkey before we blowtorch this turkey?
Gas on, ignite.
(BLOWTORCH HISSES)
Oh! That's it!
Zoe, this doesn't feel right. Ah, none of this feels good, Zoe.
This is against all of my natural instincts.
Oh, it smells so bad!Round the front a bit, round the front.
It's bubbling.
Whoa!
So that's a woollen hat,
so it's not quite as flammable as synthetic light polyester.
It doesn't give you any protection, that's clear.
Once you start to melt the fat, that becomes a fuel.
What you're looking at here is necrosis of the calvarium,
which is death of the skin.
You're saying the more fat there is, the more there is to burn?
That is true, yeah. Why out of the two of us am I doing it, then?
If you're going to do this for real, Guz...Yes.
..we need to talk about protection. Please, let's do that.
Ooh-hoo!Surprisingly, a nappy is not only incredibly absorbent,
it contains a polymer that when supersaturated,
is also fire-retardant.
If I cut the inside in here open,
so that's cotton mixed with sodium polyacrylate,
which is this stuff.
So this white powder will absorb up to 300 times its own weight,
in water. Ah!
I'll just scatter a bit into here. Lovely.
Oi, oi, oi, oi, oi! What am I seeing here?
Where'd the liquid go? Dig it out for me.
Can you get it out? Oh, it's warm, why is it warm?
Why did you go in with that?
It's now totally absorbed all the water that was in this beaker.
So how might you harness this for protection?
How might we harness the power of a nappy
to protect us from blowtorch danger? Yep.
Well, feel it.
It needs to be wet. Wet it first? It will be.
So you could make a suit essentially out of nappies,
and that would give you a layer of protection.
How good a layer of protection?
Professional stunt performers don't wear nappies,
but they do use the same material to protect themselves.
And they use it in a jelly form,
so this is the same stuff, just pulverised down.
That's going to be your base layer of protection.
Like, Guz's kids who wear nappies,
would they be safe then from fire and stuff? No, James.
Don't try this at home.
Even if it is wet?Well, only in the area where the nappy is.
Theoretically, if I covered the kids head to toe with wet nappies...
Theoretically, yeah.
In practice, please don't set fire to your children.
Don't do that, that's dangerous. A blanket of nappies.
Or as a beard net?Yeah. You can really massage that in.
Over the skin, hair... It will be good for you.
Ah! Like that.
(CHUCKLES) It feels really sexy!
That's it, guys.In the beard, really get underneath it there.
There you go.
To do this in real life and remain safe,
I recommend a combination of factors.
You want the gel as your base layer,
and then over the top, the silicone hood,
which is the stunt artist's best friend when it comes to fire.
A silicone hood?
That exciting to you? This is exciting to me.
'Still to come -'
What are you wearing?I'm Marv. I've got the crowbar and everything.
Ready for the trap. Brave boy.
That's going to break a face.
Like, smash! It really does hurt.
(SHRIEKS)
This is great. Merry Christmas, Guz.
Merry Christmas to you.
Whoa, yes!
Ah, they're so great!
A Speak & Spell.
Oh, my God!
Etch A Sketch. Etch A Sketch.
Waaaah!
Tell me, am I - Aha!
A Talkboy from the actual film Home Alone 2: Lost In New York?
Are you kidding me?
You can use that to check in at hotels and all sorts.
You could tape people's voices and record 'em,
and then later on, play 'em back all slow and they'll get confused,
if they're stupid.
(PLAYS SLOWLY) "You can use it to check in at hotels..."
Who's that? "You can tape people's voices and record 'em,
and then later on..." Sorry? "..all slow..."
ALEX: 'For a family film,
the sheer brutality of what Harry and Marv go through is jaw-dropping.
So I've landed in Hollywood to visit a man
who knows better than anyone what Guz and James are about to face.'
Ow!
I'm so excited about this.
I'm here to meet Marv himself, Daniel Stern.
I've got the coat on, I've got the scarf, I've got the crowbar.
I think he's going to absolutely love this. Can't wait to see.
(KNOCKS ON DOOR)
Hi Daniel, I'm Alex.
What, uh... What are you wearing?
I got your outfit, I'm Marv. I've got the crowbar and everything.
(CHUCKLES) Yeah?
Shall I go and get changed?
I think that'd be good. OK, no worries.
I'll be back.OK. Cool.Good.
Daniel, my jumper might say "Team Kevin"
but it's such a privilege to meet you.
Thank you so much.I'm very flattered you wanted to talk to me.
So Home Alone's been a massive part of the last 30 years of my life.
Has it been a massive part of yours as well?
Yeah. It keeps going every year. It comes around again.
So at Christmas time, it starts again,
and it's on TV again and they're showing it on a loop.
What is it you think about the film
that makes it so, you know... has given it such a long-lasting impact?
My performance. (LAUGHS)
Obviously! (LAUGHS)
I mean - It's brilliant!
(BOTH LAUGH) It is brilliant.
Uh, no, it was... It was a perfect...
Again, just a perfect movie.
But to me, the key, that's always been the kid empowerment,
the kid's gonna take on scary people and win.
When kids watch it they go,
"Oh God! That little kid, and they're big, scary!"
"He got 'em, he's beating 'em, he's beating 'em."
Hello.
Aaaah!
And the parents love it, to see their kids feel empowered like that.
I remember when me and my brothers were younger, we watched it,
we used to make little plans and lay out Micro Machines under the window.
We were so desperate to get burgled, and I -
(LAUGHS)We were... We were praying someone would break in,
it was going to be a hoot. You were gonna do it, you were gonna win.
As an adult, you know, as I kind of watch it now,
you do realise that actually, it's quite violent, what Kevin does.
Very violent, you know, and some of it's kind of sadistic, too.
Kevin was a sadist.
I mean, if you look at what he did to Harry and me,
he puts his head on fire, he smashes us in the face,
I'm attacked by spiders...
I've got him!
Harry, help me get him!
'They brought the tarantula on the set.'
The tarantula wrangler. Who's like, a wrangler?
What do you... how do you...?
He says, "I'm just gonna put the thing on your face."
I'm like, "Well, if it bites me...
I'll die, you know? Can you take the stinger out?"
He said, "Well, if I take the stinger out, the spider will die."
And I said, "Well, if it's between him and me..."
(BOTH LAUGH) I've got my own self-interest here.
Watched it the other day, and the tarantula actually...
It puts its leg... In my mouth.
It goes in your mouth.Yes, it does go in my mouth and my eye.
Were you kind of aware while you were filming?Yeah.
"Oh my God, a tarantula's got its leg in my mouth?"Yes, I was.
I was very aware of that. And the scream is absolutely...
I mean, it's so iconic, and it's... (LAUGHS)
It's my favourite film scream of all time.
(HIGH-PITCHED SCREAM)
(SCREAMS AGAIN)
(HIGH-PITCHED) What is... Get it off! Aah!
Is that how you normally scream? Yes, it is, yeah.
(LAUGHS)If I, you know, if you scare me,
I will howl like I wanna sound like a woman screaming for her life.
Uh, yeah, that violence is,
it's a comedic tradition in a weird way, isn't it?Yeah.
People like to laugh at other people getting hurt.
It means we're all... we're sick, sick humans.
Stunt men are the heroes of the movie.
I mean, of the comedy part of that movie,
they were just... took it to a whole, whole another level.
It was not funny to watch, it was scary to watch.
And that was the least of it. The paint can thing,
I mean, I think they had it rigged
where, like, they had a safety harness.
These guys go up, you know, were up five, six stairs or something.
They're supposed to jump back and they have a rig on 'em,
but the camera could see the rig.
There's no special effects in the movie.
Like, there's no CGI, it's all live, it's all on the camera.
So those two guys...
..they're up five steps, the paint can comes,
they jump backwards...
..and land on their backs... (SHRIEKS)
..like, smash!
And you just go, "Oh my God, are you OK?" It really does hurt.
I mean, it's not just, "Oh, that would hurt."
It really did hurt THEM. Yeah.
I was fine, which was the important part.
No, it's crazy that... It was crazy to watch.
'If Daniel was freaked out by watching stunt men doing it,
how on earth is James going to survive it for real?'
Watch out! Huh?
Ugh! Aaaaah!
Boom! Use your brain!
Bulk!
It probably gave them brain damage, butt damage.
You know what I'd do with the can? I'd put fire in the can.
I would just go like, whoop, oh!
Could put a pillow in front. But you would still get knocked down.
Nothing will hurt this bad boy. Yeah?
Got my rope, got my paint tin.
Ready for my trap. Brave boy.
(CHUCKLES) Not as brave as me.
I'm taking 12,000 degrees to my forehead.OK.
Short straw there, Guz. Bad luck.
Well, blowtorch versus paint can,
I'd actually prefer to face the blowtorch,
because you can be burnt and very quickly put it out.
But straight-on paint can to the face,
we're talking brain damage.
I'm glad you're doing this one. Now I'm worried why this is here.
This is a ballistic gel head that's made from an agar-agar jelly,
so it's vegan, but it's a very dense jelly
used to simulate the human body in crash test scenarios.
I don't think the vegan thing
comforts me at the minute. I mean, you know...
All for it, but like... Have a feel.
It's quite heavy. It is heavy, act...
That's more solid than it looked.
And this face doesn't even have, like, a jawbone or teeth,
or a nose to be broken. I quite like my nose.
You know how J.Lo had her bum insured? I did that with my nose.
Did you really? Yeah.
Let's take him to the test rig and run some experiments.
Just to confirm, that ballistics head is a definite representation
of James' actual face?
I think it's a bit smaller.Great, now I've got to go on a face diet!
Don't let me stand in the way of you doing this one.
I can see in your eyes it's getting a bit appealing,
watching the set-up. Look into my eyes.
Do my eyes look like I want to do this?
Going to reach 17 miles per hour.
Seventeen mile an hour from there? Yep. All right, I'm ready.
(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)
(TOGETHER) Three...
..two...
..one.
That's going to break your face.
Yeah, that vegan head is not getting up ever again in its life!
That was like a three-tonne van slamming into you.
You might die. In my expert opinion,
for this trap, let's lower the ropes so you take it on your body.
How good are your stomach muscles?
Not great, but I don't want to go any lower than that.
That's supposed to accurately represent my bruv James Acaster?
I asked for the measurements, and this is what came through.
What I want to get an idea of now, is how far might you travel?
I would like to hazard a guess. Yep.Far.
And up please.
(DRAMATIC MUSIC)
Mm, well done.
Like that?Yeah, you kept that a secret, magic powers.
Yep.Right, this time, James, do you want to do the honours?
Three, two, one. Go.
Oh! What?
That paint can hits you that hard, your heart is going to pi-kow!
That is better than the face. (CHUCKLES)
And look, you don't travel huge distances.
You're dead, man!
It's the force I'm worried about. Pssh!
If you want to see force, I can show you force. We can...
increase the weight in the can.
Then you'll see just how reasonable this can is.
Twenty-five litre can...
hurtling towards the torso 17 miles per hour.
The resulting impact this time
is going to be like a 30-tonne juggernaut.
I've added some explosive to the front.
Think Christmas crackers. Everyone loves a little bang at Christmas.
OK, here we go.
Go!
(ALL CHEER)
Yes!That is why I wanted to do this show!
I wanted to see bodies exploding and hit with massive cans.
I'll do it with that. Strap me up right now. I don't care.
Hit me with that, and rig me up with explosives.
Wow!
I've still got to do this, haven't I? A version of, yeah.
We can make it safe, I promise.
So this is decelerating impact protection.
It sounds safe.Great. If it's as high-tech as that.
What? No. That's... There you go.
That's a...
That's a pillow and a baking tray, and I don't even know what that is.
Cricket pad. I'm not Graham Gooch!
Composite, composite.
Core protection.
Decelerate through the padding pillow.
Absorb initial impact through the deformation of the steel tray.
No, no, no. Bake cookies, go to sleep,
play a game that lasts for days for no reason.
That is all that these things are designed for.
How the hell has Brooker got away with any of this?
He's on holiday, and I'm covering my torso with a baking tin.
'Still to come -'
How do we do this safely? There's loads of different things we do.
Can you come to the door please? Are you having a giraffe?
I'd try and get arrested for this.
You know, Guz, when you think about it,
Home Alone is actually all about a greedy little boy
and his desperate need for pizza.
No, I don't think that's what it's about.
It clearly states in the title of the movie,
it's about a little kid who's home... alone.
Think about it, right? First film, someone eats his cheese pizza,
he gets furious, punches his brother.
Second film, he gets given a cheese pizza in a limousine,
he's delighted. And who can forget the hilarious prank he plays,
on the pizza delivery driver? It's all about pizza, baby.
Acaster, it's all about the pizza.
'Of all the shenanigans Kevin gets up to in Home Alone,
the pizza delivery prank is one of the most inventive and most loved.'
Oh, it's the pizza thing. Oh yeah!
'By fast-forwarding through clips of an old gangster movie,
Kevin tricks a pizza delivery boy
into thinking he's stumbled across a shoot-out. Genius!'
Leave it on the doorstep and get the hell outta here.
OK.
Um, but what about the money?
What money?
Well, you have to pay for your pizza, sir.
Do you think that'll work in real life?
It depends. If it's on Uber Eats, no,
because you just pay it on the phone call.
TV: One, two, ten!
(GUNSHOTS)
(CHILDREN LAUGH) Run away, man, run away!
'This has got us thinking.
Would this prank actually work in real life?'
'Probably not, but let's test this baby out.'
'First though, we rented this big house.'
'We've rigged it with a bunch of hidden cameras.'
'And we've recreated our very own gangster film.'
'Starring this extremely threatening hunk of a man.'
Do I sound like a mug?
What do you want, treacle? (LAUGHTER)
'So we've turned the clips into a high-tech soundboard.'
Are you having a giraffe?
'And ran it through our banging speaker system.'
'And there's one last important task to do.'
Wedges, start with wedges... ..put the fried garlic...
..on the pizza... OK, thank you.
And for the deal breaker, extra anchovies.
Thank you.
Why anchovy? I don't like anchovy, I said it.
No, these are extra anchovies. I got you covered.
Operation pizza prank is in motion.
Oi! (WHISPERS) There he is. There he is, he's coming.
'What do you want?'
Er, it's a delivery from Pizza Village.
(That one?) (Yeah, go on.)
'Well, I didn't know they sent pizza pie to this part of town!'
It doesn't make any sense! Guess I could choose that one?
All right, whatever you've got, dump it and scarper.
Er, it's a delivery from Pizza Village, your pizza?
What's a thing like that worth, anyway, sweetheart?
He's backed away, got his phone.
Don't know about you, but this is the worst I've felt in a while.
Yes, me too. Feel pretty bad about that.
Waited for ages, even though all we've done is been rude...
for the whole thing.
Doesn't look like you can mess with this brother.
Acaster, you press it, go on.
Press it, go on.
Yeah, what you want, treacle?
Got a delivery?
He's just confused.
Are you having a giraffe?
(CHUCKLES)Let me try and press it, it'll make more sense.
OK, I'll give it to you, as I press the dog.
(RECORDING OF BARKING) Don't start pressing the dog!
(BARKING CONTINUES) (KNOCKS)
Hello, can you come to the door, please?
Run, pizza boy!
He's calling the police. I ain't trying to get arrested for this.
Hello, I've just brought a delivery to 118...
He's on the phone.
Go on, just give him all the money.
Thank you.
Do you want your pizza? You have a good day, brother.
Do one! All right!
He's taking the pizza away, we don't eat the pizza!
Do you know what? I like this guy.
He took the 50 quid and the pizza, and said to us, "Do one."
Do you know what he said to us? 'Do one.'
(KNOCKING ON DOOR)
What you want, treacle? Delivery?
'Are you having a giraffe?'
Just got a pizza delivery for you.
Turn around, tough guy! Turn around, you said?
'Turn around, tough guy!' OK.
Three, two...
..one. Go get 'em, ya filthy animal!
(RECORDING OF DOGS BARKING)
At 'em, pizza boy!
(BARKING CONTINUES)
Acasty? Yeah?
This is terrible.
'Well, here's a treat for your troubles.'
OK. 'You waste of space!'
You had one job, and now, you pull this!
Do you want me to leave the pizza outside?
Yeah.
(RECORDING OF DOGS BARKING) Cheers, thank you.
Your change is there. Are you having a giraffe?
We can conclude that this wouldn't work in real life.
In the film, they've got actors
saying the corresponding lines to what he's got queued up on the video.
It's all very funny.
But in real life, doesn't make any sense,
it's a disaster, it doesn't work.
They're amazing at their jobs, and we may be out.
'So we proved the pizza prank is a load of old baloney.
But what about Kevin's electrocution booby trap?'
Yeah, you can't watch!
(ELECTRICAL BUZZING)
(GASPS) (GASPS)
Ooooh!
Oh! Whoa!
I think he would have to go to the doctors.
He's turned into a skeleton, you know?
Ooooooh!
(SHRIEKS)
(HIGH-PITCH SHRIEK)
Would you really see a skeleton as you turn up that electric?
I don't think so.
You'd be like, "Oh! Ah! Oh!"
Kevin's quite harsh.
Yeah, he doesn't want his house to get robbed,
when like his parents aren't there. Yeah.
He's being quite like... He's being a good boy.
Them kids, they looked like they enjoy this.
"Ha ha," watching at home. We enjoyed it, you enjoyed it,
Marv getting all "brrrrr" when we were kids.
Truth is, it's not all fun and games.
It feels very, very danger to me.
Zoe, can you confirm that it's danger?Deadly.
Huh? Deadly.
What, actually? Actually, seriously.
What Marv experienced was enough electricity to kill someone.
Happy Christmas.
Happy Christmas, Zoe.
That's nice, I think of all bad news...Yes.
Ended with the words "Happy Christmas" then you feel better.
So what I wanted was for you to experience electricity
at a level that's still safe,
but that will help engender some respect for it.
Who's defining what's safe and what's not here?
You said Marv could've died from grabbing on them...
doing it like that. Yeah.
OK, well, this is a TENS machine.
Transcutaneal electrical nerve stimulant.
It's designed to be used at home
with no medical professionals present.
What I'd like you to do is just have a nice little tea party with me.
Cake, cup of tea. But if you do it wearing these,
I will run some current through you.
Let me put it on you.
Say when? When.
Ooh, I got a little bit of fizzing going on in my ar-rrrrm, Guz!
There you go. How was that? Fizzy?
Yes, fizzy.Fizzy. Like pins and needles.
Maybe take a little sip of tea?
What's that now? What's that? Why are you making my arm twerk?
Why is my arm twerking?
That is... Huh?
OK, OK! Why's his arm not twerking? It's not doing what mine was doing.
All right, we're going back to James.Ah!
Whoa, whoa, whoa! I'm sorry, aah!
Right. That's ampage, yeah?
Ch-ch-ch-ch, wall-ll-a!
That's probably enough - That's still milliamps, right?
If you hit 30 milliamps, that's when you start to get...Ah!
Stop! What's called the freezing current.
Whatever you've done, look at that cake.
Look at the state of ampage.
And I want to show you something where we keep that ampage low,
but we're going to bring the voltage up.
I tell you what, I'm so confident, I'll go first.
What it is, is a sort of wand, and it's called a violet wand,
where you put on these attachments.
And then this will become charged up,
and this becomes an electrode and then earths itself.
You said, "earths itself". Yeah.
What's it earthing itself through? Your body, or my body.
Yeah, I'm good. OK.
I think this little one will be nice.Nice for what?
(ELECTRICAL BUZZING) I'm now charged.
Congratulations. Can I discharge onto you?
Well, at least you asked. Erm...
Ah! Oh-ho!
Hoo-hoo! So this is tiny milliamps,
but we're dealing with 30,000 volts.
That's described as the erotic range.Ooh!
Sorry, say again one more time? The erotic range.
(GASPS) Ooh!
So you've experienced what electricity can do
at really safe low levels.
Next, I'm going to show you electricity as it is,
out of the mains, so this is now unsafe levels.
I think you need to see the reality
of what actually Marv had to deal with.OK, let's do it.
This set-up is designed to show you what happens
when you run mains electricity through something that conducts.
We conduct, gherkins also conduct.
We both contain salt and water.
What kind of dangers could be present here?
Flying vinegar droplets in the eye?
We're going to get merked by the gherk.OK, deep breaths, you ready?
Three, two, one.
# BEETHOVEN: Ode To Joy (SIZZLING)
Whoa!
Like a Christmas tree!
That was sick! Smoking, literally smoking.
How am I supposed to stay safe from this?
I recommend at least beginning with rubber gloves.
So this is an insulating material.
So electricity won't conduct through rubber.
Lovely, they suit you, actually!
Do they really? I'll have a word in Kevin's ear,
make sure that he's balancing that voltage and ampage right
so that it's both electrified, but maybe not deadly.
Maybe? But add in that rubber,
just as the background safeguarding confidence giver to go for the grab.
You are guaranteeing to me,
if I wear these rubber gloves, and I wear all of the suit...Yeah.
..I can catch that little Kevin and not die in the process?
There are no guarantees with electricity.
But you're good to go when you've got those gloves on.
ALEX: 'It's crazy to think the stunts in Home Alone
were all done for real. None of that CGI business.
So I'm getting the scoop from one of the heroes involved.
It's Joe Pesci's stuntman
and innovator of the now infamous Home Alone fall, Troy Brown.'
Troy, thank you for joining me today.
First things first,
Home Alone has become well-known for its brutality in the stunts.
What did you think when you first saw
some of what they had planned for you?
For me to make, you know, comedy funny,
you have to do physical stuff.
So you know, we tried to do... It was all for real.
You try to hit the ground as hard as you can.
It's always funny seeing someone get hurt.(LAUGHS)
In terms of the stunts in the first film,
if you can kind of talk me through... Mm.
The first one was the blowtorch to the head. How did that work out?
They had a special cap they'd blow the heat on,
and that's more of a visual effect.
But on the second Home Alone, when we did the blowtorch,
they lit my head on fire. I did real fire,
where I did a handstand in the toilet...Yeah.
..and put it out. That was real fire.
The stunts in the film are so iconic.
But the one that stands out above all the rest,
is the Home Alone fall. Um...
Please can you talk us through what the Home Alone fall is,
and how it's done?
Basically, it's just landing flat on your back
without twisting or putting an arm out.
You basically just plant one foot and push off as hard as you can
and get your feet above your head so you become flat,
and make sure you have your chin tucked so you don't hit your head.
And then after Home Alone, it really got my career going
as far as I got called for every stair fall,
getting hit by cars and physical stuff.Yeah.
The stunts and the falls,
they're a big part of why I think it's had that longevity.
Talking of falls, a lot of the stunts was Dan Stern.
Cos he's super-athletic.
Yeah, he did a lot of the stuff like getting hit with the iron.
Of course, what was hilarious in the second one
was where he was getting electrocuted.Yeah! (CHUCKLES)
I mean, that was funny just watching it, you know?
Oooh!
Would you do any of these stunts again now?
I'm not, you know... I'm old and fat now,
so it wouldn't look as good, but yeah!(CHUCKLES)
And this is the big question.
Would you be able to show me? I may regret asking this.
Yeah, we'll do something. OK then.
We'll hit you with the shovel or something.
Sorry, you'll... hit me with a shovel or something?Yeah.
Oh no, maybe we'll just scrap that, production guys?
Don't worry about that, that's fine.
So Troy, I'm ready. I've got a crash mat.
So like, how do we do this safely?
Like, do I kind of put out my feet, is there different stuff, or just -
(GRUNTS) Are you all right, dude?
(GRUNTS) Yeah. Yeah.
It's just...
It's been lovely to meet you, Troy.
Um, thanks. Thanks for... for that, pal.
Um, I must say, I'm glad that's the only stunt I've got to do here.
Good luck back in the studio, fellas.
(KNOCKS ON DOOR) Guz?
Yeah? What you doing in there?
Er, you're going to love this, it's a surprise for you.
Guz, you know I don't like surprises. Just come out.
No, no, no, remember what Zoe was saying?
Rubber is for safety, and I got this rubber ready for you.
What were you talki... Guz, this is stupid, I'm coming in, OK?
I want to know what's going on.
Oooh! Aaah!
ALEX: 'Still to come -'
This is me dressed up as... (CHUCKLES)
You're an idiot!
(BOTH LAUGH HYSTERICALLY)
It's absolutely mad.
This is serious injury.
I don't want to die!
What are you doing? I'm using that turkey from earlier
to make us some lovely Christmas sandwiches. Are you hungry?
Looks a bit dry. It's not my thing, really.
This is going to be a cool sandwich. Want me to toast it?
Do you have the ability to do that?
Toast you a lovely thanksgiving sandwich right here.
Whoa! (HISSING)
Yeah! Burn it, burn it!
Burn it, burn it!
Brilliant. Whoa, that knife's hot!
Bon appetit.
# It's Christmas...#
It does smell good. Yeah.
To be honest, as I was doing it, I thought,
this is not my best sandwich I've ever made.
'Oh, this red-hot doorknob scene
makes me wince like a Pitbull sucking on nettles.
Thank God James is taking this one.'
This is one of my favourite parts ever. And he doesn't even look.
(SIZZLING) (SCREAMS)
That really hurt. Yeah.
Cos it was like super-hot when he touched it.Yeah.
(BLOWS)
(BLOWS)
Ugh!(HISSING) (SIGHS WITH RELIEF)
That would be the most painful-est thing in my life.
Oh!
Well, at least he has a tattoo now.
What would you do?
I'd probably do it with, like, only with the teeth,
cos like - Teeth?!
The challenge here is how to make that door handle glow red hot.
Kevin used a barbeque firelighter,
like that one on the shelf. This one?
Yeah, grab that. Genius. Works every time.
Let's give it a try. So hang it on the doorknob.OK.
This is basically a kettle element. Flick the switch.
How quick is it hot?Let's have a look. I've got my temperature gun.
I'd like to see the deleted scene in Home Alone,
where he's got a temperature gun and he's checking...
is that hot enough yet?
I don't know if that's going to burn him.I think that's the point.
The element is glowing red hot, and the door handle... nothing.
And it's because it's cooling into the air.
You haven't got that speed of conduction. Any other ideas?
(DRAMATIC MUSIC)
Oi, oi, oi, oi, oi. That's it.
Three hundred and... No.
It's gone all over the shop.
It's absolutely mad.
I can see the face of Jesus through the flame. Is that normal?
(LAUGHS) Can you see the door's actually catching fire?
It's on fire! You going to do anything about that?
Wood, you know, burns at a lower temperature than the metal.
So what's the door's temperature? One-seventy.
Handle temperature? Seventy five.
Yeah. Is that it?
So 100 degrees cooler.
We failed to get it hot enough with the flamethrower. We did.
I suggest we try induction to heat it up.
This... What?
..is a magnetic induction coil. I don't know what it is,
but it sounds exciting.
It's a piece of copper coiled round on itself.Yeah.
And an electric current pulses through it,
and it produces a magnetic field.
It's going to excite, like, the atoms
and make them really hot.Zoe, you make science sound very sexy.
How long will it take to make the knob go red?
It might take a while. Kevin needs to plan this in advance.
I think what we're discovering about Kevin is he's a full little liar!
Or that montage where he's setting the house up,
that took, like, a long weekend. Yeah.
It's hot enough to really damage you.
Can cook an egg on that, no problem.Anyone got an egg?
Look, normally I would, I forgot it today.
You can see it's starting to glow red.Yeah.
Yeah, we're at 326. What's the "G" stand for?
Guz's knob.
Consider this to be your hand. This is the level of damage
this doorknob can do.
Here we go.
(SIZZLING) Oi, oi, oi, oi!
Ooh, listen to that! Oi, oi, oi, oi!
That your hand? Yeah, yeah, if that's my hand...
Yeah, look at that.
Zoe, if that was somebody's hand, that's irreparable damage.
We're talking serious, serious injury.
What if I, like, made a glove out of ice? Ice beats fire.
It would definitely give you maybe enough time,
but would you have enough grip?
Behind you, there are some welding gloves that I saved for best.
They're not designed for, like, direct grabbing,
but may give some level of protection
if you want to give it a try.
They're not designed for direct grabbing? Not prolonged -
You'd like me to directly grab it? Yes.
Be careful, man!
Yeah, I'm saying I'm your friend, be careful.
Do you feel like you could get some purchase on it, and turn?
That's all you can do. There's smoke coming off that.
And I felt it warm. I might have to double-glove.
Or... Or?
..I put the meat on the welder's glove.
I'd call that a composite material, very advanced.
I knew that's what Zoe was going to say, composition material.
Composite. Composite.
Say that one more - Like you guys.
Two or materials together may become greater than the sum of their parts.
Yeah, we're greater than the sum of our parts, right?
I don't even know what it means, sounds good.
Is Brooker doing any of this? We're getting frazzed,
what's Brooker doing? Left us home alone.
'Being able to laugh at the violence of Home Alone rather than cry,
is down to the genius comedy acting of Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci.'
(BOTH GRUNT)
'Harry and Marv have gone down
as one of the greatest double acts in cinema history.'
You and Joe had so much chemistry on the film.
Where did that come from?
We were classic characters in a certain way.
He's the short, tough Jimmy Cagney, you know, and I was the goof.
It's uh, Laurel and Hardy, you know, the contrasting characters.
Their friendship was fun, the movie was fun.
The silliness, we both approached it in our own way, you know.
It was comfortable with each of us.
And the chemistry kinda clicked.
I heard somewhere that on set,
Joe genuinely wanted Macaulay Culkin to be intimidated by him.
(CHUCKLES)Would he kind of act to intimidate him?
Joe wanted everybody to be intimidated by him!
That wasn't just an act, that was everybody.
Joe, yeah, I think Joe did have a bit of that, like...
he wanted Mac to be scared of him.
Again, I think he wanted everybody...
and he still is scary. (LAUGHS)
You've done so much in your career, so many films, so many TV shows.
But is Home Alone a thing that, kind of, people talk to you...
Oh, yeah. ..the most about?
Yeah, people are crazy about it. I've had people come up to me,
with tattoos of myself on them.
Like, people have me tattooed on different parts of their body,
and say, "Hey, Marv!"
And Wet Bandits, you know, the Wet Bandits, or Marv,
but the Wet Bandit really hung on as, uh...
It resonated with people, I guess.
Is that, kind of, the weirdest kind of fan obsession thing you've seen?
Yeah. I mean, that can't get any weirder.
Like, you don't know me, and...
and you took the effort to permanently tattoo my face
onto your body. That blows my mind.
Again, like, I've learned to embrace it
as opposed to thinking it's too weird.
If people wanna go off on their own journeys, on Home Alone,
and just be obsessed by it, I think that's beautiful now.
I don't think it's weird. I've done it myself.
I've dressed up... I've dressed up as you.Really?
I just want to show you this quickly.
So, I-I dressed up, in the scene where you get electrocuted.Oh, oh!
So... One of my favourites!
This is... This is me dressed up as...(CHUCKLES)
(LAUGHS)
So... You're an idiot!
(BOTH LAUGH HYSTERICALLY) What a riot!
Daniel, thank you so much. This has been, just...
This has been one of the great days of my life.
I'll include getting married and my having kids.Get outta town!
It has, it's been... That's very sweet.
It's been an absolute privilege to spend time with you,
and talk about the film that I love so much.
But just before we go, I've got one thing that I'd like to ask you. What?
Um, would you be OK to sign my iron, please?
Sign it, yes. If you want me to smash it into my face,
that's extra. (LAUGHS) Yeah!
I'd be honoured to sign your... There you go, sir.
Thank you so much.
"Marv."
Well, there you go.
'Still to come -'
We're going to have a real nice swing.
Oh!
I'm actually still outside the McCallister house.
Let's glove up.
Meaty.
Well, James, baby. It's our final stunt.
Is it the one where we eat loads of pizza, eat loads of ice-cream,
then wake up in a nice, soft bed in a hotel on Christmas morning
and unwrap loads of presents? No, it's the zipwire there.
Ah. Well, that's all right.
He comes out the house, lands safely in his treehouse. That would be fun.
Not quite.
Oh, yeah. The robbers make it halfway, right,
then the wire gets cut and they smash to the side of the house hard.
Really hard, that's the one, yeah.
That doesn't feel very Christmassy to me.
Hey, guys? Check this out!
Oh, go back! Go back! Go back!
They're going to stress about it, and fall.
Don't look down.
(GASPS) Down they go.
(BOTH SCREAM)
(GRUNTS) And smash!
BOYS: Ooh! Oh!
Kevin's set up, like, all these pranks,
and this is like the big end one. Yeah, like the banger.
The banger. The banger.
How would you feel if that was you? I don't know, cos I'd be dead.
Final trap, who's scared of heights?
Guz... and me.
Only a little bit, and usually I would say, pssh, not a problem.
But based on everything you've been showing us,
I think we're going to die from doing this.
Possib... If it's a zipline, this is like, this is fine.
I've seen this in the film, they zip down.
I'm looking forward to this one, it looks fun.Whee!
Yeah, it's like, "whee", rough and tumble. It's fine.
In the film, they swing back against the house, don't they?
Kevin cuts the rope. Yep.
So back they swing, a la paint can, in fact.Yep.
Whoom! And then the impact is against the wall.
This rigger will show you
what should've happened to the burglars in the film,
and what will happen to you,
if you happen to swing back to the wall without any protection.
And Acaster, just to confirm,
you think based on how Zoe just teed this up,
that you would still like to, if all the options were there,
swing into the wall, and you'd be OK?
Well, I don't know, seeing is believing.
When we see the whole experiment, fair enough.
But I reckon we're going to have a real nice swing,
and it'll be like a victory lap, you and me,
just swinging down, boom, boom, boom.
Maybe do it with no clothes on like the dummy.
I think this will be a laugh.
Zoe saved the best till last, as a little treat.
OK, let's give it a go.
Three, two, one.
Oh, that wasn't so bad.
Doing fine, that mannequin.
But?
The reality is we're going to have broken limbs, cracked ribs,
punctured lungs, damaged internal organs,
maybe a little loss of teeth.
Little loss of teeth? Just one or two.
On top of all that damage? Little bit.
Teeth are gone as well. Cracked skull.Cracked skull.
Ugh. There you go.
What are you thinking for protection?
Uh, cover ourselves in springs
and then we can bounce to safety if we fall?
Trampolines on the floor, bounce even higher?Yep.
Lay those out before Kevin gets into the treehouse?
Uh, maybe bouncy castle house,
like, turn the whole house into a bouncy castle,
the whole thing's... Actually, the budget's getting a bit high now.
I think most of it we spent on Guz,
so I don't really think we can push to springs and a bouncy castle.
What else can we do? Huh!
(BOTH GASP) TOGETHER: Bubble wrap.
As requested,
we've got our mannequin wrapped in copious amounts of bubble wrap,
with a little added extra inside.
I've put a number of these... This is a balloon filled with jelly,
and this is there to represent the internal organs.
Can I feel it? You can. Don't squeeze too hard.
But yeah. Feel it.
That feels nice.
Can we wait underneath the mannequin with our mouths open?
There may be other bits of shrapnel, like a foot, falling,
so I wouldn't.That'll all stay in there anyway, won't it?
Cos the bubble wrap will do its job.
If the bubble wrap does its job, limbs should be intact,
and the balloons inside should be intact.
Bubble balloon organ mannequin, are go.
Three, two... Let's have it.
..one.
(CLUNKS) Holy...!
Ooh! His head came off!
I think we need to take a closer look.
Right, let's take a look.
Right, I'm going to reach around the front.Zoe!
One-handed. Doctor!
Bring that back. Do you want to pull that down, James?Strip it off.
Oh, ooh, this mannequin's had better days.
Right. Oh, there's some sticky icky there.
Oozage.
Oh! Oh, my word!
Ugh! Mm, it's not ideal.
So some of the balloons were hung from these strings,
so that they could swing inside. I actually expected some damage,
but this is... Over 50% of the balloons have burst.
Doctor, this is decimation! Yeah.
Unsurvivable injuries here.
So this trap is unsurvivable, that's what you're saying,
is that we can't trick this.
I'm saying science can't help. What?!
The only option we have is to catch Kevin before he cuts the rope.
Fine. And then we've got to get down that zipwire.
What's the fastest way of doing that? Together.
Like...Together? ..piggyback?
Or face-to-face, koala bear.
As long as we're together, I'll koala-ya, I'll be on ya.
Yeah? You'll be on me.
But we're going to catch that kid. Good luck.
What?I thought we were going to do another cool plan?
Zoe?
Laughlin?
The next step on my journey is Chicago,
where the film was actually shot.
I don't think I've ever been this excited in my entire life.
First up, it's the big one, the McCallister house.
To me, this house epitomises Christmas,
and a 30-year dream of visiting it is about to come true.
This is amazing.
'The McCallisters' house has always seemed a magical place to me.
I always wondered what Kevin's parents did, to be able to afford it.
Now, I've been told I can't bring the crew to film here,
so I've had to ditch the cameras and go mobile.'
Let me have a look, oh my God!
I'm coming up to it now.
I can't believe this.
Oh man, I'm actually stood outside the McCallister house.
I can't believe it, I can't believe I'm here.
Honestly, I've loved this house and wanted to visit this house,
ever since I was, like, six.
This is unbelievable! I might as well give you some facts, ain't I?
'Only the living room and hallway were used in the film.
The rest of the rooms were actually a studio set.
The amazing treehouse was built especially for the film.
They knocked it down again straight after filming.
It's become an unbelievably popular tourist spot,
with dozens of superfans like me turning up,
every single day, to get their photo taken outside.
It was bought in 2012 for $1.6 million,
an absolute bargain considering it was listed at 2.4 million.'
I can't believe I'm here.
I want to do the Kevin thing, but I've got to use the hand to the face.
I've got to hold my ph... Aaah!
How about like that? Aaah!
'Still to come -
It's time for the boys to face their fate.'
Think twice before you take this on!
Let's get that kid!
Let's go! Aaah!
(ALARM CLOCK BEEPS)
This is it, Guz, we're in the end game now.
We've learnt a lot.
We know how to survive all these traps, more or less.
Now it's a case of burgling Kevin's house for real.
Acaster, I like your confidence.
But there's danger in there.
Anything could happen to us!
What if my kids see this on television,
and see their father and Uncle Acasty dead on the ground?
We don't have to worry. Just like Home Alone,
it's a family film, this is a family TV show.
The thing we're doing is perfectly safe,
and perfectly imitable.
KEVIN: Hey, guys! Are you the two idiots,
that think they can catch me?
Every time I feel that fear inside me, wonder why am I doing this,
I remember. Cos of that little kid, I want to break him down!
I hate him so much! I hate the stupid house, the stupid snowman,
all his stupid traps. We're going to beat 'em, then beat him!
(SIGHS) This is it, Guz. Ah, I guess it is.
Let me say one more thing before we do this.Say it.
I really wish I was Alex Brooker right now.
ALEX: 'The Grace Episcopal Church in Chicago
was used for one of my favourite scenes.
It's the poignant and emotional moment,
when Kevin realises Old Man Marley
isn't actually a psychopathic murderer.
And it's my final stop before I leave what's been a magical trip.'
We've all got that one thing we do each year,
that makes it feel like Christmas.
Something that reminds us of what it felt like to have Christmas as a kid,
and for me, it's watching Home Alone.
I've been obsessed with this film ever since I first saw it,
when I was six years old, and I love it even more now that I'm 38.
I just... I'm obsessed with it.
And to come here, meet some of the cast and see where it was filmed,
hasn't only been a career highlight,
I think it's been a life highlight, honestly.
This is the best Christmas present I could've had.
(BELLS RING)
Eight o'clock, it's time for the boys to face their fate.
Have you got any words of advice for James and Guz back in the studio?
Guys, I'm a trained professional, do not do this.
I've heard too much about you guys. I wouldn't do it.
If you do do it, make sure you have plenty of insurance.(SNIGGERS)
Listen to me, I wish I had gotten the chance to meet you
before you meet your demise.
If Marv had really done any of this stuff, he'd be dead.
Please, think twice before you take this on!
I just want to say good luck to both of you,
and look, worst comes to the worst and it goes wrong,
welcome to the club!
The parking's great, so are the toilets.
That didn't seem 100% heartfelt. Shocking.
Shocking. We've got this.
CHOIR: # O Holy Night!
# The stars are brightly shining
# It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth
# Long lay the world in sin and error pining
# Till he appear'd... Did you hire that?
Yeah, I had a coupon, got a good fee. Wow.
Hey, Jamsie, here's the plan. OK.
I'll go round the back of the house, you go to the front.
I'll take a blowtorch to the head while you get your hand branded.
Then I'll go down to the basement, take a bit of electricity,
and you go through the house, get caught by a paint tin,
we catch that little kid, and make sure we get him
before he cuts that rope and sends us to our death!
# Oh hear the angel voices...
If we pull this off, without any injury,
let me tell you, they're going to be writing songs about us,
they'll be naming parks after us, libraries,
they're going to be erecting statues in our name and our honour.
Sound beautiful to me.
Let's get this kid. Let's get him!
# Oh night divine...
Acaster?
Who are you? Who am I? Harry or Marv? Marv or Harry?
Who's the little dinky one? Harry.
I'm Marv. OK.
Right, let's get this kid, ruin his dreams.
You go round the back, I'm going through the front.
Good luck.
(EXHALES)
(ELECTRICAL BUZZING)
Now, let's glove up.
Meaty.
I'm going to break into your house, Kevin!
I hope you...
(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)
Aaaah! My head! (DRAMATIC MUSIC)
(HISSING)
Waaaah!
Aaah! Aah-aah-aah!
Ooooh!
Whoooa!
Ow!
Ooooh!
Guz?
I'm in the house.
GUZ: This suit is so damn tight!
Oh, I hate electricity!
Hoo!
I don't want to die.
Oh!
More power, yeah!
It's working!
James?
James, I'm looking like the nicest Christmas tree you ever seen.
Hey, bozos!
Up here!
I'm coming to get you, kid! You're toast! Say your prayers!
(THUMP)
(GROANS)
James?
# BACH: Air On G String
(GROANS SOFTLY)
I'm going to get you, kid!
Come on, Guz, he's gone upstairs.
I'm going to kill that kid!
Kevin McCallister!
(DRAMATIC MUSIC)
James?
Hey, bozos, down here! Bet you can't catch me!
Quickly, get on my back before this kid cuts the rope.
This is it, Guz. One final trap,
and then we succeed where Harry and Marv failed.
Let's get that kid! Let's get him!
BOTH: Aaaaaaaaah!
We're going to get you! Ah, you're dead!
You're dead! Kevin, you're dead!
Ah, Kevin, you're dead!
Yeeees! (LAUGHS TRIUMPHANTLY)
Yes! We...
We did it! We did it! (LAUGHS)
That stupid kid didn't even try and cut the rope, he's so stupid.
Where is that kid?
(CHAINSAW MOTOR WHIRRS)
BOTH: Aaaaaaah!
