If ever there was a person who was ever going to escape the other side,

it would be Harry Houdini.

We're at the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California.

Arguably the world's most famous haunted house.

This maze-like mansion,

saturated with the dark energy of the countless deaths

caused by the Winchester family gun business

was already hugely compelling.

But now we've discovered a connection

to legendary magician and escape artist,

Harry Houdini.

In the midst of a 1924 nationwide tour,

in which he aggressively debunked

fraudulent spiritualists and mediums,

Houdini made a midnight visit to the mansion.

He later described a seance room

without corners and a vast wardrobe,

containing a different robe for each spirit.

But he didn't debunk anything.

Is this the place that proved the paranormal for Harry Houdini?

We gather in the grand ballroom,

which cost more to build than the average price of an entire home at the time.

Guys, Harry Houdini.

Very mysterious man.

Very magical man.

And a great escape artist.

Harry Houdini, born Eric Weisz,

achieved worldwide fame for dangerous stunts

in which he freed himself from handcuffs, straitjackets, and near drowning.

It is the 100 year anniversary

of Houdini's presence

in this extremely mysterious and haunted mansion.

The mansion was obsessively built up

by Sarah Winchester over 38 years.

She was reportedly told by a spiritualist

that the spirit rots in the house that doesn't grow.

And that the reason a person dies is because that person does not continue

to build additions to the house in which she lives.

It is also said that Sarah continually added to the house

as a way of confusing the spirits of those killed by the guns manufactured

by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company:

Her late husband William's massively profitable

19th century weapons manufacturing business.

Now, the mansion covers 24,000 square feet,

has 160 rooms, 2,000 doors and 10,000 windows.

Now, years after Houdini's death,

there was a lot of publicity in the newspapers

about a bunch of people wanted to do a seance here.

Including some magicians and even his widow Bess.

Houdini and his wife Bess

had an understanding that the first to die

would try to contact the other from the afterlife.

They came up with a code phrase,

"Rosabelle Believe."

An intimate reference to one of their favorite songs.

After Harry's death in 1926,

Bess tried unsuccessfully to reach him via seance

every year on Halloween.

The date of his death.

In 1936, she sat down for what she called her final attempt.

Houdini did not come through.

[Zak] But in 1938, Bess decided to try again

at the Winchester Mystery House.

And it was planned.

Everything was all set up.

But for whatever reason, it didn't happen.

What powerful effect did the mansion have

to convince Bess to change her mind and try again?

And what stopped her from going through with it?

We are going to do the seance that never happened.

But we're not just doing any seance.

We are inviting his only known blood relative to our seance.

Mr. George Hardeen.

George Hardeen's grandfather, Theodore Hardeen,

was Houdini's brother.

Making George Houdini's great nephew.

We are going to use your energy,

a blood relative of Harry Houdini.

So for the very first time, we are gonna use

every piece of equipment that we have.

We're gonna add some other scientific instruments

with our technology now.

We, through the usage of Instrumental Spirit Communication,

a department of paranormal research that we excel,

we are going to try to get that code word

and a lot more communication

in front of the eyes and ears of his blood relative.

What if we get something he says that he needed,

that Houdini would have visited in 1924.

And where his unique energy could still be resonating.

Okay, so we are getting ready to, uh, make this journey

by following the footsteps of Harry Houdini

during his visit here at the Winchester Mystery House

that is going to lead to our biggest seance to date.

The seance of Houdini,

one hundred years later after his visit here at the mansion.

We are joined, uh, with Walter here, the general manager.

Also, Olivia, the assistant tour manager here.

As we make our way through this labyrinthine structure,

Olivia reacts to something across the hall.

I thought I saw someone over there.

[Zak] What happened?

I thought that I saw someone, possibly.

-[Zak] Where, over here? -[Olivia] Yeah, there's a hallway on the other side.

[Zak] Okay.

We're taking a minute because our leader of the train

thought that she might have seen somebody over there.

So we're just making sure that somebody isn't actually over there.

We're all together in a group

and we're the only people inside the house.

So there's no living being in that hallway.

We move now to the room where Houdini said Sarah Winchester

hung the multicolored robes she kept for the spirits.

Houdini said that when Sarah was getting ready for her seance,

she had a robe of a different color

for every spirit she was communicating with

and that was documented in a newspaper article detailing his appearance.

-[Zak] That article is stating that Houdini saw these robes. -[Walter] Correct.

-Her seance robes may have hung in this closet. -[Walter] Correct.

[Zak] Now we just have to find the seance room with no corners.

[Zak] As we move ever closer to our seance,

Olivia and senior marketing manager Amelia Richardson

bring out the article Walter mentioned that detailed Houdini's visit here.

[Amelia] Yeah, so Houdini personally clipped off this piece of paper

and put it in an envelope and sent it to John Brown.

-Really? -So on the top of it is a sign

that says, "Regards, Houdini." [laughs]

Houdini signed it?

Yeah, that's why I said you can't touch it because it will disintegrate

-because it's a very old piece of paper. [laughing] -Oh!

-[Amelia] Surprise. -I have to touch it.

[Amelia laughs]

After some negotiation,

I agreed not to touch the newspaper which Houdini sent to John Brown,

who took over the house after Sarah's death in 1922.

[Olivia] So essentially he got quoted about the Winchester Mystery House.

[Zak] Oh, my gosh.

This is incredible.

So he literally has a signature right here.

-[Olivia] Mm-hmm. -[Zak] Look at Houdini.

Houdini's hand, his eyes were focused on this article

mentioning the Winchester Mystery House.

I take the newspaper into the ballroom

to see if it elicits a reaction from Houdini before our seance.

We want you to attend our seance

that we're gonna have tomorrow night.

Harry Houdini, are you here?

At the very beginning, there was a 67 milligal spike

as you started addressing Harry Houdini.

-[Zak] What? -Yeah.

[Zak] It is commonly believed

that Houdini gave the Winchester Mystery House its name.

Are we feeling the residual energy of his connection

to this enigmatic structure?

I meet with John Cox,

a renowned expert on Houdini's life and legend.

So, uh, John,

there's a lot of sayings out there

that Harry Houdini

just wanted to really expose spiritualists and mediums and things like that.

But then I've heard the other end,

that he was really into the afterlife.

And that's why they came up with this whole seance thing with his wife after he died.

When he was alive, do you think he visited here to just expose a medium?

Or did he visit here to try to, like, paranormal investigate?

Um, Houdini, he wasn't an arch-skeptic,

the way we think of some skeptics

who just don't believe anything

and were out to expose everything.

Houdini was a seeker.

And he characterized himself as that.

He said, I'm seeking the truth.

And he was a believer in spiritualism.

And what he was doing was he was going to mediums

to try and find the real thing.

He was weeding out the ones he thought were full of [bleep]

and trying to find the mediums that were truly gifted then?

Yes, that is what he was doing.

But he always had an open mind,

and he was always ready to believe if it would be evidence.

Um, Houdini always tried to attend these seances

to see if he can pierce the veil

and get communication from that other side.

The other side that he did believe in.

We have received communication from that other side. Intelligent.

We've had questions answered multiple times.

It's irrefutable.

If his spirit is here, I believe that we can do it.

John brings out an extremely significant artifact

to help us reach out to Houdini.

-This has not been shown ever. -[Zak] Really?

This was called a spirit trumpet.

A spirit trumpet?

And mediums would set it in the table,

turn off the lights, and during the seance,

the trumpet would levitate,

-and the ghost would speak through it. -Really?

There is no evidence of spirit trumpets

actually levitating during seances.

That was exactly the kind of claim

that Houdini would have debunked.

This was Houdini's spirit trumpet.

-Let me tell you a little story. -Oh, oh. Hold on.

-That was Houdini's? -Yes.

This came from his wife, to a collector,

to another collector, to me tonight.

[Zak] In this picture, Houdini poses with Annie Benninghofen,

a spiritualist he exposed as a fraud.

This was Houdini's spirit trumpet. Okay?

Just by me touching this is amazing.

We take John to the multicolored robe room

and ask Amelia about the seance room with no corners.

That would be the witch's cap.

-So-- -[John] Where's the witch's cap?

That's on the top floor.

Can we go to the witch's cap?

Oh, my-- I've never been to the witch's cap.

-Oh, that's too good. -Let's go to the witch's cap, John!

-I love it. -[Amelia] This is my favorite room.

Oh, [bleep], I forgot he was holding the artifact.

-Sorry. -[man] No, that's fine.

This thing's tough.

This has been beat up by a lot of spirits.

[Zak] Amelia takes us to the witch's cap,

which may well be the room where Sarah held seances.

And which Houdini most likely visited in 1924.

Dude, this is creepy up here.

-Different energy up here. -Yeah.

[Zak] Whoa.

[John] What?

[John] Where at?

Right when I walked in, it was like... [imitating laugher]

-Really? -[Aaron] I swear to God.

Well, what I learned at the Westerfeld House in San Francisco,

where all the ceremonies were done

from, uh, Kenneth Anger and Anton LaVey,

is they chose the top of the turret, right?

-[all] Yeah. -[man] It was a round room.

[Zak] And they believe because of the turret,

the energy was channeled up into the sky,

and they actually removed the rafters.

-[John] Like a pyramid. -So this would make sense.

Have we just found the room

-that Houdini was actually talking about? -[John] The real seance--

-The real seance chamber. -Yeah.

[Zak] It's Day Two at the Winchester Mystery House.

I want to do everything I can to enhance our connection

to Houdini during our upcoming seance.

So I send the guys to nearby San Francisco.

The city bookended Houdini's career.

He got his big break at the former Orpheum Theater in 1899,

then returned to San Francisco

at the end of his career to perform in front of massive crowds.

[crowd cheering]

The guys start in the Fisherman's Wharf District

at the Musee Mecanique,

a coin-operated arcade

that evolved out of turn-of-the-century dime museums

that were home to freak shows and outlandish entertainments.

[amusing instrumental music playing]

Before becoming a global sensation,

Houdini toiled in obscurity

in these dime museums.

And even went by "Dime Museum Harry."

I've asked the guys to visit San Francisco landmarks

that impacted Houdini's career

and gather physical material from the actual locations

to use as trigger objects during the seance.

They meet first with Houdini expert David Facer

at Houdini's Magic Shop on Pier 39.

This man knew no bounds.

Nothing could hold him.

They always say if ever there was a person

who was ever going to escape the other side, it would be Harry Houdini.

[cheering]

[Zak] David brings out a scrapbook and identifies three important locations.

First stop on the scavenger hunt

is the Hearst Building where on March 19th, 1923,

Houdini thrilled crowds by escaping a straitjacket

while hanging upside down 50 feet up.

Billy collects a loose piece of the metal downspout

and the guys move to the Golden Gate Theater

where Houdini performed on April 21st, 1923.

Jay discovers a small bit of the stucco exterior

and it's off to the Civic Center Plaza

in central San Francisco

where Houdini narrowly escaped a burning-at-the-stake stunt

on April 7th, 1923.

Aaron sees a loose rock from the ground

where Houdini battled the flames and the search is complete.

These three highly energetic trigger objects will be

on the table throughout our seance

beckoning Houdini to come forth.

While the guys are covering ground in San Francisco,

I meet with George Hardeen to prep for our seance.

It is an absolute honor to be sitting across from you

and for you accepting our bizarre request

to join in on a seance

where we will be trying very hard

to see if we can get any evidence at all

of your great uncle to come through

and give us maybe his code word

or just something to happen.

George's grandfather, Theodore Hardeen, was Harry Houdini's brother.

-Was he into the same illusionist type magic... -[George] Yeah.

...as his brother?

He was Houdini's partner until Houdini got married to Bess.

And then Bess became his partner

and my grandfather went off and did his own.

But they would challenge each other

and the public did not know they were brothers.

So Hardeen would challenge Houdini and Houdini--

And they would fill their theaters

because people wanted to see this.

-[Zak] Mm-hmm. -And they had a good thing going.

[Zak] After Houdini's death in 1926,

many tried and failed to communicate with his spirit.

Do you think that from beyond the grave,

even though he didn't come through some of the earlier seances--

I beg to differ.

-Really? -He was at every one.

It's our perception.

We were unable to perceive his presence.

[Zak] Really?

But all you need to do is say the name Houdini

and that invokes the energy that is Harry Houdini.

[breathing heavily]

At that time, maybe people just... just didn't know

how to understand the senses that they had.

-Maybe he was there... -No.

...but nobody realized it

because he couldn't pick a spirit trumpet up.

Right. Because he couldn't do something physical.

Yeah. Something profound.

Yes, that is what they were looking for.

Something that they could... see move.

Who's to know that nobody sitting at that table

had a very intense personal experience?

-[George] Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. -[Zak] Or had visions of him a few days later?

The extensive nature of following up with those individuals

was probably never done.

But now, almost 100 years later,

uh, we have a lot of advancements in technology

that we believe can penetrate through the barriers

that prevented that contact from ever happening.

ITC, Instrumental Transcommunication,

XLS technology, LiDAR technology.

All of this. Even throughout the various spectrums,

infrared and ultraviolet.

We are capturing various forms of anomalies

that we know are spirit forms.

where all the people we have ever loved are there to welcome us.

And we are the guests of honor.

The darkness looms very close.

And with that said, we are about to conduct

our most historic seance ever.

We are now ready to conduct our seance,

intended to contact Harry Houdini himself.

I can already tell you the energy is electrifying.

And we have invited to help lead this seance

two very powerful people that we have worked with before.

Patti Negri, psychic medium. That was a no-brainer,

for all the great work she's done with us.

connected to the mouth of his painting

that is being captured by a boom mic

that is going back to nerve center

over at Jeff's station over there.

Jeff, really quick, tell us, in a nutshell,

what we have going on over there.

[Jeff] I have the XLS on his chair,

as well as the XLS 2, which will give us the facial recognition.

Okay. Which you just revamped.

-[Jeff] Yes. So it works in infrared at the same time. -[Zak] Okay.

Over this direction,

we have a number of different types of cameras,

including night vision back there.

We also have two other rooms.

The witch hat room,

which we spoke with John yesterday,

and he believes that may have been the room that Harry Houdini himself

was referencing in that article.

The room, with no corners.

In the center of the room,

the acoustics are very, very unique.

You can actually hear an echo from around the entire room.

So I've placed this zoom recorder.

It's a four-channel zoom recorder, which means

it's recording front, back, left and right,

and we can look at each one of those channels when we review the audio.

At any time during the seance, if anybody feels anything

very abnormal, from medical issues

to just sensations that are very strong,

that you can't stop thinking about,

please, uh, notate that to the camera and to us.

In Sarah Winchester's seance room,

we have an ITC isolated video loop experiment running

which uses a video camera aimed at a projection screen

to create a video feedback loop,

that, in theory, spirits can appear in or manipulate the feed.

Harry Houdini, can you please give us any type of sign

that you hear my voice?

We are all focused on you,

your energy, your body, your eyes,

your voice, your smile, your anger, your emotions.

We are connected to you.

we start capturing something very strange

that emerges from the center of the video loop.

Immediately after this,

Jay uses the Paranormal Puck 2 at nerve center

and asks, "Are you here, Sarah?"

And he receives the word "candle"

in Sarah's seance room,

where we just captured this ITC anomaly.

There are several candles hanging from the ceiling.

Aaron now operates another ITC device,

but this uses the audio frequencies

within the electromagnetic spectrum

to try and hear voices from the other side.

-Something's trying to form right now in black. -Really?

A black face.

Right on his picture.

[Zak] Jeff, our electrical engineer,

begins to notice these unexplained black anomalies

that are appearing on the painting,

and also in the empty chair.

Harry, what am I holding in my hand?

What are these, Harry?

After I say this, the painting and chair

both show these strange black masses simultaneously.

And at this exact moment we all feel ice cold air,

which is strange because it's extremely hot in here

and there is no air conditioning.

[Jeff] I'm feeling cold air come across the table down here

-and covering my fingers. It's really... -[Patti] I am too.

[Jeff] This is weird. I mean, like, it's colder here than it is here.

I'm at the very end of the table

and it's colder down here than it is over--

-[Zak] Ooh! -[Jeff] What did it say, Zak?

[Zak] It said "witch, unlock."

As we have two witches at this table,

is this Houdini telling them to unlock the gates to the afterlife?

George, can we ask you to sit in your uncle's chair?

Sure.

Uncle Harry. It's George.

You know my voice.

I talk to you all the time.

[Zak] At this moment,

a male voice responds to George,

but we can't decipher what it's saying.

Could this be Harry Houdini?

Uncle Harry. It's George.

I talk to you all the time.

-Did you hear that? -Yeah. I heard that.

I'm with friends here.

Let them hear you and feel you.

I just feel a sense of joy.

-That's the feeling I've had since I got here. -[Zak] Oh, wow.

-[George] Yeah. -[Zak] That's good.

[Jeff] Maybe it's gratitude for what we're doing to recognize him

and do this a 100 years later.

[George] Perhaps. It just feels... really good.

[Zak] Right after George says this,

a large, black, spherical shaped anomaly,

incredibly appears and then vanishes near his head.

It just feels... really good.

At this point, we all wear UV-protective glasses

so Aaron can take extended exposure ultraviolet polaroid photos.

We're recording with my forensic UV camera

and Aaron's taking time lapse UV polaroids.

So we need to sit still.

[Zak] After all photos have been taken,

I decide to spend more time using the Ovilus to try and communicate.

Do you remember this house?

[Zak] Through the window?

Harry, is there somewhere in this house that you want us to go?

"Make trip."

-[Jeff] It just said "Make trip?" -[Zak] Yeah.

[Jeff] You just said we need to go to the other...

-[Zak] Oh, make the trip to the other room. -[Jeff] Make the trip. Right.

Which is the seance room...

for this house. This is not the seance room.

We're just having a seance in this room.

He's telling me make the trip.

[Zak] Where do you want us to make the trip to?

to visit the witch's hat room in Sarah's seance room.

-[Jeff] It just said "Houdini." -[Aaron] We just got Houdini.

[Zak] In an incredible moment,

with everyone witnessing, all of us clearly hear "Houdini"

from the Polterpod.

In all our years investigating,

this is the most incredible photograph we have ever taken.

And like Patti just said, this light energy

is connecting everyone together

with George being the beacon.

It's also very interesting

how the light seems to be coming from Christian Day's hands

as he was focusing on them to emit power and magic.

George, final thoughts on the seance and on the photo.

I'm glad we got this.

This is evidence.

It's as you and I were speaking before, Zak.

This is happening all the time

with everyone who has passed over.

The question is, do we have the perception

it's not only proving to the world that there's life after death,
